Abstract:The microstructure, mechanical properties and fracture behavior of as-cast Mg-10Gd-3Y-xZn-0.6Zr (x = 0, 0.5, 1 and 2 wt%) alloys have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and tensile tests. The experimental results reveal that the microstructure of the alloy without Zn contains α-Mg and Mg24(Gd,Y)5 phase, the microstructure of the alloy with 0.5% Zn contained of α-Mg, (Mg,Zn)3(Gd,Y) and Mg24(Gd,Y,Zn)5 phase, whereas when Zn content was 1% and 2%, the Mg12(Gd,Y)Zn phase and some needle-shaped stacking faults notably appear and the Mg24(Gd,Y,Zn)5 phases completely disappear. Moreover, a new 18R long period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase is observed in grain boundaries with increasing Zn content up to 2%. The tensile tests indicate that the alloy containing 0.5% Zn shows the optimal mechanical properties and the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), yield strength (YS) and elongation are 228MPa, 172MPa and 5.1%, respectively. As indicated by fracture analyses, the fracture modes of the alloys with 0%, 1% and 2% Zn are brittleness transcrystalline fracture, and the tensile fracture mode of 0.5% Zn alloy is typical tough transgranular fracture.

Abstract:Different solution treatments were carried out on the semi-continuously cast Mg-9.55Gd-2.27Y-1.28Zn-0.55Zr-0.11Nd (wt.%) alloy at temperatures of 480 °C, 500 °C, and 520 °C. It was found that the different solution treatment temperatures led to different phase constitutions of the alloy. The Mg3RE-type eutectic phases transform into long period stacking order (LPSO) phases with various morphologies after solution treatment. Increasing the solution temperature resulted in larger grain size, greater number of lamellar LPSO phases, and segregation of Zr element. Block LPSO phases also shifted to rod LPSO phase. After ageing treatment, the special spatial structure consisting of prismatic β′ precipitates, basal γ′ precipitates, and lamellar LPSO phases hindered dislocation movement effectively, leading to high strength. However, the accumulation of massive dislocations promoted the premature formation of cracks at the grain boundary and LPSO/Mg matrix interface, resulting in a rapid decrease in ductility of the alloy. After solution treatment at 480 °C for 12 h and aged at 200 °C for 48 h, the Mg-9.55Gd-2.27Y-1.28Zn-0.55Zr-0.11Nd alloy exhibited favorable comprehensive mechanical properties at room temperature: ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 383 MPa, tensile yield strength (TYS) of 269 MPa, and fracture elongation (EL) of 5.1%.

Abstract:Here, the microstructure and mechanical properties are investigated for the designed Mg-4Gd-0.5Zr-xZn (x = 0, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 wt%) alloys with special emphasis on the effect of Zn. The results show that the designed Mg-4Gd-0.5Zr-xZn alloys exhibit the exceptional ductility. Among them, the Mg-4Gd-0.5Zr-1.0Zn and Mg-4Gd-0.5Zr-1.5Zn alloys show the elongation to fracture as high as 35.2% and 32.5%. Furthermore, a good strength-ductility balance is achieved in the alloys, which is basically ascribed to the grain refinement, texture softening and the precipitation of Zn-containing second phases. As Zn content increases from 0 to 1.5 wt%, the grain sizes of the extruded Mg-Gd-Zr-Zn alloys decrease from 6.02 to 3.05 μm, while the maximum texture intensity decreases from 11.13 to 5.24 m.r.d. Moreover, the Zn2Zr3 and Mg3Zn3Gd2 precipitates, which exhibit the completely coherent and semi-coherent orientation relationship with Mg matrix, are induced by the addition of Zn. These coherent and semi-coherent precipitates lead to noticeable strengthening effect and are not easy to become the source of crack, contributing to the high ductility in Mg-4Gd-0.5Zr-1.0Zn and Mg-4Gd-0.5Zr-1.5Zn.

Abstract:In this study, the recrystallization evolution model of Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr alloy under tensile stress was established, and the microstructure evolution of Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr alloy sheet in U-shaped bending process was simulated by Deform software. The U-bending test was performed based on the simulation parameters, and the microstructure evolution law of the high-strength Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr alloy sheet during the U-shaped bending process was studied. The research showed that the grain size gradually decreased from the straight wall area to the curved filet area. Furthermore, the grain size of the formed part increased with increasing forming temperature and decreasing stamping speed. The average grain size error between finite element simulation and test results was less than 10%. The fragmentation of the bulk long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase and the kink of the lamellar LPSO phase led to the formation of the recrystallized structure. The initial dynamic recrystallized structure at the interface of the LPSO phase increased with increasing stamping speed, decreasing the overall average grain size. Moreover, the recrystallized grain size increased slightly with increasing forming temperature.

Abstract:Herein, the microstructure and mechanical properties of newly developed Mg-4Gd-0.5Zr-xNd (x = 0, 0.5, 1 and 1.5 wt%) extruded alloys are investigated systematically. All the extruded alloys exhibit the complete dynamically recrystallized (DRXed) microstructure. The addition of Nd weakens the texture and decreases the intensity of double peak texture apparently from 13.08 to 8.78 m.r.d (at 1.5 wt%). With increasing the Nd content from 0 to 1.5 wt%, the grain sizes of Mg-4Gd-0.5Zr alloys gradually decrease from 11.02 to 7.90 μm, accompanying with massive fine dispersed Mg41Nd5 and Mg12(Nd,Gd) particles in the matrix. In terms of mechanical properties, the yield strength increases substantially without the loss of elongation-to-failure basically as increasing the Nd content from 0 to 1.5 wt%. Of those, the Mg-4Gd-0.5Zr-1.5Nd alloy possesses the highest yield strength (160.2 MPa), which is 82.3% higher than that of Mg-4Gd-0.5Zr alloy (87.9 MPa). Meanwhile, the Mg-4Gd-0.5Zr-1.5Nd alloy presents an outstanding ductility (39.3%).

Abstract:The effects of different Zr contents on the grain size and as-cast mechanical properties of the MgZn5Nd3.5 alloy were studied. Microstructural observation indicates that grain size is increased with increase in the Zr content in case of Zr content less than 0.8%, while the grain size is somewhat changed with that in case of Zr content more than 0.8%. From the mechanical property measurements indicate that Zr addition can improve as-cast tensile strength and elongation of the alloy. SEM analysis shows that alloy rupture changes from quasi-cleavage fracture to ductility fracture.

Abstract:The effect of Nd and Y addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of as-extruded Mg-Zn-Zr magnesium alloy has been investigated in this study. The Mg-Zn-Zr alloy had 11 μm average grain size due to dynamic recrystallization during hot extrusion; but the average grain sizes of the Mg-Zn-Nd-Y-Zr alloys were markedly reduced to 4 μm by Nd and Y additions. The lamellar α-Mg + T phase or α-Mg + W phase eutectics at grain boundaries in as-cast Mg-Zn-Nd-Y-Zr alloys were broken up and MgZn2 precipitates in the matrix are obtained during hot extrusions. The mechanical properties of as-extruded Mg-Zn-Zr alloy were improved significantly by Nd and Y additions, especially the elevated temperature strength, which was above 150 MPa in ultimate tensile strength at 250 °C. These may be ascribed to the very fine grain size, the dispersed T phase or W phase and the MgZn2 type Laves phase precipitating during hot extrusion.

Abstract:In this study, the Mg-2.16Nd-0.49Zn-0.48Zr (wt%) alloy thin-wall specimens were prepared by tungsten inert gas (TIG) based wire-arc directed energy deposition (WA-DED) with different pulsed currents. The arc characteristics, microstructures, and mechanical properties of as-deposited (AD), 5 Hz, 10 Hz, 15 Hz, and 20 Hz specimens were systematically analyzed and evaluated. The uniformly equiaxed crystals with random grain orientations and intergranular network Mg-Nd-Zn eutectics were found in the WA-DED fabricated Mg-Nd-Zn-Zr alloy thin-wall specimens. No significant voids were found. The microstructure is regulated, and the mechanical properties are improved by adjusting the pulsed current frequency. The 10 Hz specimen had the optimal microstructure with an average grain size of 10.35 μm. Concurrently, the 10 Hz specimen exhibits excellent strength-ductility synergy and isotropic, benefiting from the finely equiaxed crystals. The average microhardness of the 10 Hz specimen was 68.51 HV 0.2 , and the ultimate tensile strengths in the building and traveling directions were 223 MPa and 229.7 MPa, respectively, and the yield strengths in the building and traveling directions were 138.3 MPa and 145.3 MPa, respectively. Notably, the elongations in the building and traveling directions of the 10 Hz specimen were 16.8% and 17.4%, respectively. The local strain evolution and fracture surfaces of AD and 10 Hz specimens in the building and traveling directions were observed. The mechanisms of grain refinement and mechanical property improvement were revealed.

Abstract:In the present study, the effect of Zn content on the microstructure and deformation behavior of the as-cast Mg–Zn–Y–Nd alloy has been investigated. The results showed that as Zn content increased, the volume fraction of secondary phases increased. Moreover, the phase transformation from W-phase to W-phase and I-phase occurred. In the as-cast state, W-phase exists as eutectic and large block form. When Zn content increases to 6 and 8% (wt%), small I-phase could precipitate around W-phase particles. Additionally, the effect of Zn content on the tensile properties and deformation behavior varies with the testing temperature. At room temperature, the tensile strength increases with Zn content, whereas the elongation increases initially and then decreases. At 250 °C, as Zn content increases, the tensile strength decreases initially and then increases slightly, whereas the elongation decreases. At 350 °C, the elongation increases with Zn content, whereas the tensile strength decreases initially and then increases slightly.

Abstract:The dynamic mechanical properties and microstructure of Mg-5.9Zn-0.9Cu-0.4Zr (ZC61) alloy are systematically investigated at strain rate of 1100–2200 s−1, which is manufactured by severe plastic deformation (SPD) processes, i.e. combines traditional hot extrusion with equal channel angular pressing. The microstructural observation reveals that fine equiaxed grains are formed after the hot extrusion-shear process, and the average size of extrusion direction (ED) and extrusion radial direction (ERD) is found to be 41 µm and 32 µm, respectively. The dynamic compression curves exhibit that the peak flow stress improves with increasing strain rate, which shows a positive strain rate enhancement effects. At 2200 s−1 strain rate, the ultimate compression strength of alloy along ED and ERD is found to be 581 MPa and 530 MPa, respectively. During dynamic compression, for ED sample, the {10 1 ̅ 2} extension twinning is observed to be the major plastic deformation mechanism, and the fracture surface exhibits brittle rupture and local melting. Whereas, for ERD sample, the {10 1 ̅ 2} extension twinning and {10 1 ̅ 1 }-{10 1 ̅ 2} secondary twinning (37.5° < 11 2 ̅ 0 >) are found to be dominant deformation mechanisms, and the fracture mode is mainly brittle rupture.

Room-Temperature Strengthening, Portevin-Le Chatelier Effect, High-Temperature Tensile Deformation Behavior, and Constitutive Modeling in a Lightweight Mg-Gd-Al-Zn Alloy

Abstract:To explore room-temperature strengthening and high-temperature ductility, a lightweight novel Mg-1.85Gd-0.64Al-0.62Zn alloy was fabricated by innovative multidirectional forging and a hot-rolling technique. Microstructures and mechanical properties were studied at room and elevated temperatures with an optical microscope, an X-ray diffractometer, and a tensile tester. An ultimate tensile strength of 260 MPa, yield strength of 171 MPa, and elongation of 20.4% were demonstrated at room temperature. The room-temperature strengthening mechanisms were identified by strengthening the model estimation. A type C Portevin-Le Chatelier effect was discovered and elucidated in this alloy. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the phase composition is α-Mg solid solution and (Mg, Al)3Gd, Al7Zn3, and Al2Gd intermetallic compounds. Examination of the microstructure at elevated temperatures revealed that dynamic recrystallization and dynamic grain growth occur. In particular, it was discovered that bimodal microstructures or incomplete dynamic recrystallization microstructures exist in high-temperature deformation. A maximum quasi-superplasticity of 228.4% was demonstrated in this alloy at 673 K and 5.0 × 10-4 s-1. Flow stress curves showed that the present alloy exhibits Sotoudeh-Bate curves or a long intermediate strain-hardening stage followed by a strain-softening stage. A modified Zerilli-Armstrong constitutive equation incorporating the number of dislocations was established. The power-law constitutive equation was established to identify the deformation mechanism. Both constitutive models had good predictability. At 673 K and 5.0 × 10-4 s-1, the stress exponent was 4, and the average deformation activation energy was 104.42 kJ/mol. The number of dislocations inside a grain was 146. This characteristic evidence confirmed that dislocation motion controlled by pipe diffusion dominates the rate-controlling process under this condition.

Abstract:Microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg–4.5Zn–xNd (x=0, 1 and 2, wt%) alloys heat-treated at 603K for 2h have been investigated. T-phase (an Mg–Zn–Nd ternary phase) was observed in the Nd containing alloys. The optimal mechanical properties were obtained in the Mg–4.5Zn–1Nd alloy, and the ultimate tensile strength and yield strength were 228 and 79MPa, respectively. Through comparing with the Mg-4.5Zn alloy, the increments of ultimate tensile strength and yield strength were 51 and 17MPa. However, the strength decreased with further addition of Nd, which was mainly due to the strong continuity of the interdendritic eutectics. The deformation behavior of the Nd containing alloys has also been investigated at 473 and 523K, which indicated the occurrence of Portevin-Le Chatelier effect in the Mg–4.5Zn–2Nd alloy during tensile test at 523K.
Deformation Mechanisms of Magnesium Alloys with Rare-Earth and Zinc Additions under Plane Strain Compression

Abstract:The introduction of rare-earth (RE) elements into magnesium (Mg) alloys can significantly improve their ductility, thereby extending the applications of Mg products. However, the impacts of their chemical composition, temperature and processing methods on the mechanical properties of Mg products are highly debatable. In this work, we systematically investigate the deformation behaviors of Mg–Nd and Mg–Zn–Nd alloys using electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) characterization. The samples were deformed to different stress levels to study the microstructure and texture development during channel die compression. The results reveal that the room temperature formability of the Mg–Nd alloy can be enhanced with the addition of Zn. This is attributed to the higher activities of prismatic slip and tensile twinning in the Mg–Zn–Nd alloy as compared to the binary counterpart, facilitating strain accommodation. When the strain increases, the growing and merging of the same twin variant rapidly consumes the parent grain, which is responsible for the texture modification from the transverse to the basal direction. At elevated temperatures, the twinning is suppressed in both alloys due to the decreased critical resolved shear stress of the non-basal slip systems. Additionally, an obvious sigmoidal yielding phenomenon is observed due to the multiple activation of the different deformation modes. These findings offer valuable insights into the evolution of the microstructure and texture during plane strain compression, elucidating the connections between material chemical composition, processing and mechanical properties, which are important for the advancement of Mg alloy application.

Abstract:Microstructures and mechanical properties of the Mg–7Y–4Gd–xZn–0.4Zr (x = 0.5, 1.5, 3, and 5 wt.%) alloys in the as-cast, as-extruded, and peak-aged conditions have been investigated by using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. It is found that the peak-aged Mg–7Y–4Gd–1.5Zn–0.4Zr alloys have the highest strength after aging at 220 °C. The highest ultimate tensile strength and yield tensile strength are 418 and 320 MPa, respectively. The addition of 1.5 wt.% Zn to the based alloys results in a greater aging effect and better mechanical properties at both room and elevated temperatures. The improved mechanical properties are mainly ascribed to both a fine β′ phase and a long periodic stacking-ordered structure, which coexist together in the peak-aged alloys.

Abstract:Here it was found that the pulsed current can improve the plasticity of Mg-13Gd-4Y–2Zn-0.5Zr rare earth magnesium alloy. When the parameters of pulsed current-assisted tension are 200 V; 100 μs; 2 Hz; 0.1 mm/min, the elongation can be increased from 3.6% to 10.4% but without strength loss. By comparing the mechanical properties of the samples under different frequencies, pulse widths and current densities, it was found that the current density is the most important factor, which can further improve the plasticity. Additionally, the basal texture strength decreased from 8.9 to 6.7, indicating that the anisotropy was weakened. The numerical calculation result showed that kinked lamellar long-period stacking ordered phases (LPSO) phases can lead to current distribution disorder inside grains, and it is difficult to form directional current at microscopic scale, so as to produce obvious texture. Besides, the grain size was refined from 50 μm to 12 μm after pulsed current-assisted tension, which is caused by the promoted dynamic recrystallization. This paper found a novel phenomenon based on the interaction between pulsed current and kinked lamellar LPSO phases inside grains, which can provide inspiration for deformation of rare earth magnesium alloys with low energy consumption and high efficiency, and it is an interesting subject.

Abstract:The microstructure revolution and mechanical properties of as-extruded and peak-aged Mg–6Zn–1Mn– 4Sn–0.5Ca (ZMT614–0.5Ca) alloy were studied by OM, SEM, TEM, hardness testing and tensile testing. The results showed that the as-cast ZMT614–0.5Ca alloy mainly consisted of <em>α</em>-Mg, Mg–Zn and CaMgSn phase. The hot extrusion process effectively refined the microstructure and led to a completely dynamic recrystallized microstructure. The average grain size of as-extruded alloy was ˜4.85 μm. After solution treatment, remained CaMgSn with high melting point played a significant role in pinning effect and impeding the migration of grain boundary. After aging treatment, peak-aged ZMT614–0.5Ca alloy exhibited a good combination of strength and ductility, with yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and elongation being 338 MPa, 383 MPa and 7.5%, respectively. The yield strength of the alloy increased significantly by around 36% compared with that in as-extruded condition, which should be attributed to the precipitation strengthening of <em>β'</em> phase.

Abstract:Limited ductility consistently poses a challenge for high-strength Mg-RE (rare earth) structures prepared by additive manufacturing. Particularly following heat treatment, while the strength of the Mg-RE alloy experiences a substantial increase, there is a noteworthy decrease in its ductility. Herein, a novel Mg-Gd-Al-Zr-Zn thin wall was successfully fabricated by cold metal transfer-based wire-arc directed energy deposition (CMT-WA-DED) and Al alloying. The microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of deposited and heat-treatment alloys were elucidated systematically. By adding Al element, Al 2 Gd and Al-Zr phases with thermal stability were precipitated in the deposited alloy. During the solidification or heat treatment stage, Al 2 Gd and Al-Zr phases could pin grain boundaries to restrict grain growth. The as-deposited alloys exhibited fully equiaxed grains at different heights and orientations. Thus, the thin wall exhibited good isotropic performance. After the heat treatment, the grain size only slightly grew and no abnormal grain growth was observed. Various morphologies of β precipitation phases were discovered along grain boundaries and within the grains. Additionally, a high density of β' and β 1 phases within the grains and β phases along the grain boundary played pivotal roles in enhancing the mechanical strength of the Mg-Gd-Al-Zr-Zn alloy. The alloys exhibited an excellent combination of strength and ductility with ultimate tensile strength of 340 ± 7 MPa, yield strength of 212 ± 5 MPa, and elongation of 12.7 ± 0.9%. This work provides theoretical and practical reference value for the Mg-RE structures obtaining an excellent combination of strength and ductility prepared by additive manufacturing.

Abstract:It has been well known that electric pulse can be utilized to enhance the plasticity of metals, which is attributed to the change of dislocation dynamics, e.g., localized planar slip to homogeneous wavy slip. Here, we show another effect of pulse current, which facilitates texture weakening through room-temperature dynamic recrystallization and additionally improve the plasticity of a polycrystalline Mg-3Al-1Sn-1Zn alloy. By conducting a tensile test under electrical pulse, we found that the peak flow stress and fracture strain depend strongly on current density. As peak current densities increases, the flow stress drops and the fracture strain increases. Our Electron Backscatter Diffraction results suggest that dynamic recrystallization occurs at room temperature, which develops a weakened texture. Our work provides a new insight into electroplasticity mechanism in Mg alloys.

Abstract:As-cast microstructures of Mg–5Zn–2Nd–1.5Y–0.6Zr–0.4Ca electromagnetic casting alloy were characterized in detail, revealing the presence of W-phase (Mg3RE2Zn3) at grain boundaries. After hot extrusion at 643 K with two extrusion ratios of 38 and 22 respectively followed homogenization at 673 K for 16 h, the alloy showed an ultrafine grain size of 2–5 μm due to dynamic recrystallization in the course of hot extrusion, and exhibited a high strength of 357 MPa at room temperature, which can partially be attributed to the MgZn2 type Laves phase precipitating during hot extrusion.

Abstract:Experiments were designed to compare the rollability of magnesium alloy AZ31 sheet in two rolling schedules at the same rolling temperatures: multi-pass electroplastic rolling (ER) and warm rolling (WR). While cracks occur in WR sheet at an accumulative true strain of −0.24, the sheet can be rolled by ER up to an accumulative true strain of −1.09 without edge-cracking. This rollability enhancement in ER sheet was found to be related to the improved homogeneity of plastic deformation and dynamic recrystallization (DRX), which postpones the crack initiation. A ‘twinning - shear banding - DRX’ microstructure evolution model was proposed to explain the effect of pulsed electric current on the homogeneity of deformation and subsequent DRX. The use of ER sheet could pave the way for low-cost applications of lightweight magnesium components.
