Abstract:Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to formate is considered as a perfect route for efficient conversion of the greenhouse gas CO2 to value-added chemicals. However, it still remains a huge challenge to design a catalyst with both high catalytic activity and selectivity for target products. Here we report a unique Sn-doped Bi2O3 nanosheet (NS) electrocatalyst with different atomic percentages of Sn (1.2, 2.5, and 3.8%) prepared by a simple solvothermal method for highly efficient electrochemical reduction of CO2 to formate. Of them, the 2.5% Sn-doped Bi2O3 NSs exhibited the highest faradaic efficiency (FE) of 93.4% with a current density of 24.3 mA cm-2 for formate at -0.97 V in the H-cell and a maximum current density of nearly 50 mA cm-2 was achieved at -1.27 V. The formate FE is stable maintained at over 90% in a wide potential range from -0.87 V to -1.17 V. Electrochemical and density functional theory (DFT) analyses of undoped and Sn doped Bi2O3 NSs indicated that the strong synergistic effect between Sn and Bi is responsible for the enhancement in the adsorption capacity of the OCHO* intermediate, and thus the activity for formate production. In addition, we coupled 2.5% Sn-doped Bi2O3 NSs with a dimensionally stable anode (DSA) to realize battery-driven highly active CO2RR and OER with decent activity and efficiency.

Abstract:Abstract CO 2 electroreduction reaction offers an attractive approach to global carbon neutrality. Industrial CO 2 electrolysis towards formate requires stepped-up current densities, which is limited by the difficulty of precisely reconciling the competing intermediates (COOH* and HCOO*). Herein, nano-crumples induced Sn-Bi bimetallic interface-rich materials are in situ designed by tailored electrodeposition under CO 2 electrolysis conditions, significantly expediting formate production. Compared with Sn-Bi bulk alloy and pure Sn, this Sn-Bi interface pattern delivers optimum upshift of Sn p-band center, accordingly the moderate valence electron depletion, which leads to weakened Sn-C hybridization of competing COOH* and suitable Sn-O hybridization of HCOO*. Superior partial current density up to 140 mA/cm 2 for formate is achieved. High Faradaic efficiency (>90%) is maintained at a wide potential window with a durability of 160 h. In this work, we elevate the interface design of highly active and stable materials for efficient CO 2 electroreduction.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to valuable chemicals can alleviate the energy crisis and reduce the greenhouse effect. Herein, bimetallic Bi x In y (x, y is percentage composition) nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully prepared and utilized as electrocatalysts for electrochemical conversion of CO 2 to formate. By changing the Bi/In atom ratio and varying the amount of surfactant PVP and solvent DMF, the surface morphology of and the electronic structure of Bi x In y catalysts can be optimized. The optimized Bi 88.77 In 11.23 NPs were the most favorable for formate formation and the FE (Faradaic efficiency) of formate reached 94.29% at a potential of − 1.0 V (vs. RHE). The DFT calculations confirmed that the synergistic effect of bimetallic and dense nanoparticle structures promotes the adsorption of CO 2 molecules and major * OCHO intermediates at active sites, thus accelerating the reaction rate. The Bi 88.77 In 11.23 NPs were further employed as cathode coupling oxygen evolution reaction to construct a two-electrode electrolysis system (CO 2 RR‖OER). The whole electrolysis needed a low cell voltage of 3.4 V to deliver 10 mA/cm 2 . This study will provide an efficient approach to enhance the activity and selectivity for CO 2 RR by the synergistic effect of bimetal.

Nitrogen-Doped Bismuth Nanosheet as an Efficient Electrocatalyst to CO2 Reduction for Production of Formate

Abstract:Electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2RR) to produce high value-added chemicals or fuels is a promising technology to address the greenhouse effect and energy challenges. Formate is a desirable product of CO2RR with great economic value. Here, nitrogen-doped bismuth nanosheets (N-BiNSs) were prepared by a facile one-step method. The N-BiNSs were used as efficient electrocatalysts for CO2RR with selective formate production. The N-BiNSs exhibited a high formate Faradic efficiency (FEformate) of 95.25% at -0.95 V (vs. RHE) with a stable current density of 33.63 mA cm-2 in 0.5 M KHCO3. Moreover, the N-BiNSs for CO2RR yielded a large current density (300 mA cm-2) for formate production in a flow-cell measurement, achieving the commercial requirement. The FEformate of 90% can maintain stability for 14 h of electrolysis. Nitrogen doping could induce charge transfer from the N atom to the Bi atom, thus modulating the electronic structure of N-Bi nanosheets. DFT results demonstrated the N-BiNSs reduced the adsorption energy of the *OCHO intermediate and promoted the mass transfer of charges, thereby improving the CO2RR with high FEformate. This study provides a valuable strategy to enhance the catalytic performance of bismuth-based catalysts for CO2RR by using a nitrogen-doping strategy.

Abstract:The in‐situ construction of BiIn alloys loaded on two‐dimensional Bi2O2CO3 is used as an efficient electrocatalyst for the selective synthesis of formates, with suitable binding energies allowing the catalyst to obtain HCOOH mainly via the *OCHO pathway. The catalyst also exhibits excellent rechargeability as the cathode portion of Zn‐CO2. Formic acid is receiving intensive attention as being one of the most progressive chemical fuels for the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide. However, the majority of catalysts suffer from low current density and Faraday efficiency. To this end, an efficient catalyst of In/Bi‐750 with InOx nanodots load is prepared on a two‐dimensional nanoflake Bi2O2CO3 substrate, which increases the adsorption of *CO2 due to the synergistic interaction between the bimetals and the exposure of sufficient active sites. In the H‐type electrolytic cell, the formate Faraday efficiency (FE) reaches 97.17% at –1.0 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)) with no significant decay over 48 h. A formate Faraday efficiency of 90.83% is also obtained in the flow cell at a higher current density of 200 mA cm−2. Both in‐situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR) and theoretical calculations show that the BiIn bimetallic site can deliver superior binding energy to the *OCHO intermediate, thereby fundamentally accelerating the conversion of CO2 to HCOOH. Furthermore, assembled Zn‐CO2 cell exhibits a maximum power of 6.97 mW cm−1 and a stability of 60 h.

Abstract:Bismuth nanoflowers (Bi‐NFs) can be prepared by in situ morphology reconstruction from Bi@Bi2O3 nanodendrites (Bi@Bi2O3‐NDs) with Bi2O2CO3 as a crucial intermediate in KHCO3 solution. The as‐prepared Bi‐NFs exhibit a high FEformate of 92.3% at −0.9 V for the electroreduction of CO2 to HCOOH owing to the selective adsorption and stabilization of *OCHO intermediates. The electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) has been considered a promising route toward carbon neutrality and renewable energy conversion. At present, most bismuth (Bi) based electrocatalysts are adopted to reduce CO2 to formate (HCOOH). However, the mechanism of different Bi nanostructures on the electrocatalytic performance requires more detailed exposition. Herein, a combined chemical replacement and electrochemical reduction process is reported to realize in situ morphology reconstruction from Bi@Bi2O3 nanodendrites (Bi@Bi2O3‐NDs) to Bi nanoflowers (Bi‐NFs). The Bi@Bi2O3‐NDs are proven to undergo a two‐step transformation process to form Bi‐NFs, aided by Bi2O2CO3 as the intermediate in KHCO3 solution. Extensive surface reconstruction of Bi@Bi2O3‐NDs renders the realization of tailored Bi‐NFs electrocatalyst that maximize the number of exposed active sites and active component (Bi0), which is conducive to the adsorption and activation of CO2 and accelerated electron transfer process. The as‐prepared Bi‐NFs exhibit a Faradaic efficiency (FEformate) of 92.3% at −0.9 V versus RHE and a high partial current density of 28.5 mA cm−2 at −1.05 V versus RHE for the electroreduction of CO2 to HCOOH. Moreover, the reaction mechanism is comprehensively investigated by in situ Raman analysis, which confirms that *OCHO is a key intermediate for the formation of HCOOH.

Cu@Bi Nanocone Induced Efficient Reduction of CO2 to Formate with High Current Density

Abstract:Electrochemical conversion of CO2 into formate provides an attractive approach to store renewable energy in the form of valuable chemical products, but searching for inexpensive catalytic material that can accomplish the reduction of CO2 to formate with a high selectivity at high current densities remains a challenge. Herein, spiky Cu@Bi nanocone with a curvature radius of 10 nm were prepared through facile electrochemical coating of a thin layer of Bi over a substrate of Cu nanocone. The Cu@Bi nanocone exhibits excellent performance for CO2 reduction, achieving a high faradaic efficiency > 90 % for formate formation in the potential range from -0.75 to - 0.95 V, and gives a faradaic efficiency of 96.9 % at - 0.95 V at a current density of -31.9 mA cm(-2). The superior performance probably be attributed to the unique conic tip structure, as indicated by comparison to the structure of bulk Bi.
Bimetallic In2O3/Bi2O3 catalysts enable highly selective CO2 electroreduction to formate within ultra‐broad potential windows

Abstract:CO2 electrochemical reduction reaction (CO2RR) to formate is a hopeful pathway for reducing CO2 and producing high value chemicals, which needs highly selective catalysts with ultra‐broad potential windows to meet the industrial demands. Herein, the nanorod‐like bimetallic In2O3/Bi2O3 catalysts were successfully synthesized by pyrolysis of bimetallic InBi‐MOF precursors. The abundant oxygen vacancies generated from the lattice mismatch of Bi2O3 and In2O3 reduced the activation energy of CO2 to *CO2‐ and improved the selectivity of *CO2‐ to formate simultaneously. Meanwhile, the carbon skeleton derived from the pyrolysis of organic framework of InBi‐MOF provided a conductive network to accelerate the electrons transmission. The catalyst exhibited an ultra‐broad applied potential window of 1200 mV (from ‐0.4 V to ‐1.6 V vs. RHE), relativistic high Faradaic efficiency of formate (99.92%) and satisfactory stability after 30 h. The in‐situ FT‐IR experiment and DFT calculation verified that the abundant oxygen vacancies on the surface of catalysts can easily absorb CO2 molecules, and oxygen vacancy path is dominant pathway. This work provides a convenient method to construct high performance bimetallic catalysts for the industrial application of CO2RR.

Abstract:The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (ECO2RR) driven by renewable electricity holds promise to store intermittent energy in chemical bonds, while producing value-added chemicals and fuels sustainably. Unfortunately, it remains a grand challenge to simultaneously achieve a high faradaic efficiency (FE), a low overpotential, and a high current density of the ECO2RR. Herein, we report the synthesis of heterostructured Bi-Cu2S nanocrystals via a one-pot solution-phase method. The epitaxial growth of Cu2S on Bi leads to abundant interfacial sites and the resultant heterostructured Bi-Cu2S nanocrystals enable highly efficient ECO2RR with a largely reduced overpotential (240 mV lower than that of Bi), a near-unity FE (>98%) for formate production, and a high partial current density (2.4- and 5.2-fold higher J(HCOO)(-) than Cu2S and Bi at -1.0 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the electron transfer from Bi to Cu2S at the interface leads to the preferential stabilization of the formate-evolution intermediate (*OCHO).
Boosting electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction to formate via carbon nanofiber encapsulated bismuth nanoparticles with ultrahigh mass activity

Abstract:Electrochemical CO 2 conversion is one of the most promising technologies to achieve carbon neutrality. However, it still suffers from some nonnegligible challenges on low production rate and unsatisfied current densities for potential large-scale applications. Herein, we prepare ultrasmall Bi nanoparticles uniformly encapsulated in the carbon nanofibers through electrospinning techniques, which is denoted as Bi/CNFs-900. Gratifyingly, this Bi/CNFs-900 catalyst demonstrates excellent performance and stability on CO 2 electro-reduction in a broad potential window. Specifically, it can produce formate with a Faradaic efficiency over 90% and a high partial current density of –235.3 mA cm −2 at −1.23 V vs . RHE in a flow-cell. Furthermore, the confinement effect of carbon nanofibers largely restricts the severe aggregation of bismuth nanoparticles during synthesis as well as electrolysis procedure, which greatly increases the accessible active sites and decreases the actual mass fraction of bismuth composition. Consequently, Bi/CNFs-900 not only achieves ultrahigh mass activity of –1.6 A mg Bi −1 , but also possesses an unprecedented formate production rate of 4403.3 μmol h −1 cm −2 . DFT calculations and in situ Raman spectroscopy further uncover the possible reaction mechanism for CO 2 reduction toward formate. These results could provide an economical and industrial-viable strategy for the preparation of electrocatalysts in CO 2 reduction. Abstract:Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to formate via renewable electricity is a cost-effective route. However, the existing bismuth-based electrocatalysts are in oxide form and involve in-situ reduction to metallic bismuth during CO2 reduction. In this work, we demonstrate a nanocomposite electrocatalyst by confining Bi nanoclusters into porous carbons (Bi NCs@PC). In particular, the Bi NCs show excellent stability that can maintain zero valences during long-term electrocatalysis or after months of storage in the air. The as-synthesized Bi NCs@PC catalyst achieves up to 96 % formate Faradaic efficiency (FE) at −1.15 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Notably, the FE only attenuates by 7.3 % after 30 days of storage under ambient conditions. In-situ Raman spectrum identify the key intermediates during formate formation. Moreover, Bi NCs encapsulated in carbon micropores could significantly reduce the formation energy of the intermediate *OCHO by density functional theory.

Abstract:CO 2 electroreduction to formate with high faradaic efficiency (FE formate ) and current density ( j formate ) in a wide potential window remains a field of intense interest. Herein, Bi–Pb 2D vertically aligned nanosheets were prepared for CO 2 electroreduction to enhance the electroreduction activity and broaden the electroreduction window. The Bi–Pb nanosheet catalysts exhibited 97.8% FE formate at −0.8 V ( vs. RHE) and the highest j formate of 53.1 mA cm −2 at −1.1 V ( vs. RHE) in a CO 2 -saturated 0.5 M KHCO 3 solution, maintaining selectivity and stability over 10 h in a H-type cell. In addition, ionic liquid electrolytes further reduced the reaction activation energy (6.39 kJ mol −1 ) of Bi–Pb nanosheet catalysts compared with 0.5 M KHCO 3 aqueous electrolytes (10.93 kJ mol −1 ). Therefore, Bi–Pb nanosheet catalysts exhibited 92.0% FE formate with 60.0 mA cm −2 j formate at −2.4 V ( vs. Ag/Ag + ), and the electroreduction window (−1.9 to −2.4 V) for FE formate over 90% was significantly widened. Density functional theory calculations indicated that the presence of electron transfer in the Bi–Pb bimetallic catalyst reduces the Gibbs free energy of *OCHO intermediates, which is conducive to the formation of formate product. This work provides a feasible method for promoting CO 2 electroreduction to formate by preparing high-performance bimetallic catalysts.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (ECO2RR) to value-added chemicals is of significant importance to control CO2 emission and reach carbon neutrality. Herein, Bi/Bi2O3-In2O3@C electrocatalyst with nanosheet arrays is successfully fabricated by a facile solvothermal with subsequent calcination process. It is found that the electron structure of Bi/Bi2O3-In2O3@C can be adjusted by the synergistic effects of Bi-In hetero-diatoms, which can significantly enhance its inherent catalytic activity. As expected, it requires a maximum HCOOH faradaic efficiency (FEHCOOH) of 97.6 % at -1.1 V vs. Reversible Hydrogen Electrode (RHE), which further delivers over 90 % at a wide potential range of -0.8 to -1.4 V vs. RHE, and exhibits high stability of 90.1 % over 60-h long-term test. In-situ Raman analysis is performed to explore the mechanism of its excellent stability. Meanwhile, in-situ attenuated total reflection-Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) analysis combined with theoretical calculations reveal that the hetero-bridging absorption of *OCHO and d-d orbital coupling effect can regulate d-band center of Bi/Bi2O3-In2O3@C and improve its density of states around Ef, moderating free energy of intermediates, thereby the improved formate production performance can be seen.

Abstract:Thin Bi nanobelts inheriting the high edge‐to‐facet ratio and high‐degree connectivity are fabricated by cathodical in situ conversion of bismuth–organic hybrid nanobelts. Such distinctive structure is conducive to stabilization of the key *OCHO intermediate for formate production and acts as "expressways" for electron transfer leading to an excellent electrocatalytic performance toward electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to formate. The morphology and active site engineering of electrocatalysts is an efficient strategy to improve the intrinsic activity and selectivity of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction. Here the ultralong and thin Bi nanobelts (Bi‐NBs) are fabricated, which feature a high edge‐to‐facet ratio and high‐degree connectivity is inherited from the ultrahigh‐aspect‐ratio crystalline bismuth−organic hybrid nanobelts, through a cathodically in situ reconstruction process. The unique nanostructure of Bi‐NBs leads to a significantly enhanced performance for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction with a near‐unity formate selectivity and high formate partial current density, which is far superior to those of the discrete Bi counterparts with low edge‐to‐facet ratios. Notably, Bi‐NBs perform ultrahigh formate selectivity over a broad potential window with a high current density reaching 400 mA cm−2 for formate production in a flow cell. Moreover, it is ultrastable to continuous electrolysis for nearly 23 h at 200 mA cm−2 without compromising the selectivity. Based on calculations, the enhanced performance is closely related to the high edge‐to‐facet ratio of Bi‐NBs, since the rich edge sites are conducive to the stabilization of the key *OCHO intermediate for formate production. In addition, the ultralong and interconnected Bi‐NBs provide "expressways" for electron transfer during CO2 electroreduction, further contributing to the improved performance.

Anion Exchange Facilitates the In Situ Construction of Bi/Bi-O Interfaces for Enhanced Electrochemical CO2-to-Formate Conversion Over a Wide Potential Window

Abstract:Electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) into value-added products is a promising strategy to reduce energy consumption and solve environmental issues. Formic acid/formate is one of the high-value, easy-to-collect, and economically viable products. Herein, the reconstructed Bi2O2CO3 nanosheets (BOCR NSs) are synthesized by an in situ electrochemical anion exchange strategy from Bi2O2SO4 as a pre-catalyst. The BOCR NSs achieve a high formate Faradaic efficiency (FEformate) of 95.7% at -1.1 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE), and maintain FEformate above 90% in a wide potential range from -0.8 to -1.5 V in H-cell. The in situ spectroscopic studies reveal that the obtained BOCR NSs undergo the anion exchange from Bi2O2SO4 to Bi2O2CO3 and further promote the self-reduction to metallic Bi to construct Bi/Bi-O active site to facilitate the formation of OCHO* intermediate. This result demonstrates anion exchange strategy can be used to rational design high performance of the catalysts toward CO2RR.

Abstract:Abstract Electroreduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) into formate is a sustainable and promising approach to solve the greenhouse effect. Herein, ultrafine Bi nanoparticles (Bi NPs) with a diameter of around 3.4 nm on hydrothermal carbons-modified carbon nanotubes were successfully obtained via dip-coating method, and could be used as an effective catalyst for electroreduction of CO2 into formate. As a result, the as-prepared catalyst exhibited an outstanding CO2 reduction performance with a faradaic efficiency of 94.8% and a higher current density of 17.8 mA cm-2. The high selectivity could maintain over a wide potential range of 400 mV, together with satisfactory durability for more than 24 h. Electrochemical results and density functional theory (DFT) calculation showed that the rich intrinsic active sites of Bi could effectively adsorb CO2 molecules and promote the CO2(ads) intermediate to form the CO2•- intermediate, and resulting in the higher intrinsic activity of the CO2 reduction. Thus, our work demonstrated a synergistic effect between carbon supports and metal nanoparticles could broaden the activity and selectivity for CO2 electroreduction and offer useful perspectives to design efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The bismuth subcarbonate nanoflowers demonstrate highly selective formation of formate in CO2 electroreduction. The self‐contained carbonate species within the electrocatalyst provide the unique reinforced CO2 adsorption properties and fast CO2 adsorption–desorption kinetics, which results in the high formate Faradic efficiencies in a wide potential window. The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising strategy to convert CO2 to carbon‐based fuels and to simultaneously reduce the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. In this work, the bismuth subcarbonate nanoflowers (BOC NFs) are facilely prepared through a one‐pot synthesis method for efficient formate electrosynthesis through CO2RR. Benefiting from the crystal structure and sheet‐stacked morphology, the in situ measurements and theoretical calculation results reveal the self‐reinforced CO2 adsorption properties and rapid CO2 adsorption–desorption kinetics on the catalyst surface, which significantly facilitate the CO2RR process. As a result, the desirable Faradaic efficiencies of over 90%, with a maximum value of 98.9%, toward formate formation, are achieved in a wide potential window from −0.8 to −1.4 V in an H‐type cell. Moreover, in a flow cell, the superior intrinsic activity of BOC NFs guarantees the high throughput electrocatalytic performance of CO2RR and the FEformate of over 90% with high current density is achieved in a potential range as wide as 1200 mV, demonstrating the great potential of BOC NFs for practical CO2RR applications. These results underscore the effectiveness of designing electrocatalysts with self‐reinforced CO2 adsorption properties to improve electrocatalytic performance for efficient CO2RR.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 is a promising pathway to generate renewable fuels and chemicals. However, its advancement is impeded by the absence of electrocatalysts with both high selectivity and stability. Here, we present a scalable in-situ thermal evaporation technique for synthesizing series of Bi, In, and Sn nanofilms on carbon felt (CF) substrates with a high-aspect-ratio structure. The resulting main-group metal nanofilms exhibit a homogeneously distributed and highly exposed catalyst surface with ample active sites, thereby promoting mass transport and ad-/desorption of reaction intermediates. Benefiting from the unique fractal morphology, the Bi nanofilms deposited on CF exhibit optimal catalytic activities for CO2 electroreduction among the designed metal nanofilms electrodes, with the highest Faradaic efficiency of 96.9
