Abstract:Mode control in multimode optical fibers (MMFs) is an emerging technology for information transmission, which has been studied extensively for ultra-thin fiber endoscopes and optical communication. Here, we propose the concept of spectral shaping to modulate light spatially through a MMF. Experimental results show that the proposed method can realize arbitrary spatial mode control by shaping the spectra of the input light. Benefitting from the wavelength-dependent mode control, two scenarios of spatial-sensitive information transmission are demonstrated, i.e., encrypted information transmission and dual-channel transmission. This work expands ways of mode modulation (spatial control) in MMFs to the spectral domain, providing a new perspective for light control with high feasibility, simple operation, concise scheme, all-fiber structure, and abundant degrees of modal freedom.

Abstract:Space domain is regarded as the only known physical dimension left of lightwave to exploit in optical communications. Recently, lots of research efforts have been devoted to using spatial modes of fibers to increase data transmission capacity in optical fiber communications. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a different approach to exploiting the space dimension, i.e. transferring image by space dimension encoding/decoding using superpositions of spatial modes in km-scale few-mode fiber. Three grayscale images are successfully transmitted through a 1.1-km few-mode fiber by employing either 4 modes, i.e. three linearly polarized (LP) modes of LP01, LP11a, LP11b and one orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode of OAM(-1), or 2 modes (OAM(+1), OAM(-1)). The bit-error rate is evaluated and zero error among all received data is achieved, showing favorable fiber link communication performance using the spatial modes of fiber for encoding/decoding. Moreover, we also demonstrate the 4 modes (LP01, LP11a, LP11b and OAM(-1)) encoding/decoding for image transfer in a 10-km few-mode fiber in the experiment. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Multimode fibers provide a unique opportunity for exploring the spatial degrees of freedom for high throughput light transmission. However, the modal dispersion prevents from the straightforward application of multimode fibers for space division multiplexing, such as image transmission. Herein, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a deep neural network termed multimode fiber inverse-scattering net for overcoming the modal dispersion induced scrambling in multimode fibers. Such a network is capable of transmitting grayscale image through the multimode fiber with high fidelity. 256-level grayscale images with 128 x 128 spatial channels encoded in the input wavefront can be retrieved from the output optical speckle patterns, where the average Pearson correlation coefficient and structural similarity index are as large as 0.97 and 0.95, respectively. Our results demonstrate that the proposed deep neural network has an excellent ability for learning the relationship between the input and output optical fields of a multimode fiber, which might facilitate the realization of high throughput space division multiplexing through multimode fibers. Abstract:Light transport in a highly multimode fiber exhibits complex behavior in space, time, frequency and polarization, especially in the presence of mode coupling. The newly developed techniques of spatial wavefront shaping turn out to be highly suitable to harness such enormous complexity: a spatial light modulator enables precise characterization of field propagation through a multimode fiber, and by adjusting the incident wavefront it can accurately tailor the transmitted spatial pattern, temporal profile and polarization state. This unprecedented control leads to multimode fiber applications in imaging, endoscopy, optical trapping and microfabrication. Furthermore, the output speckle pattern from a multimode fiber encodes spatial, temporal, spectral and polarization properties of the input light, allowing such information to be retrieved from spatial measurements only. This article provides an overview of recent advances and breakthroughs in controlling light propagation in multimode fibers, and discusses newly emerging applications.

Abstract:Multimode fibers with high information capacity and ultra-thin diameter offer new possibilities for non-invasive endoscopy and remote high-speed secure communication. However, due to their sensitivity, special demands are thus raised on the light sources, which act as both lighting and information carrier. We build a single-arm multimode fiber image transmission system. The impact of five different sources on transmission quality is systematically compared and analyzed. High-quality transmission of complex grayscale patterns is achieved with inverse transmission matrix. The measured structural similarity exceeds 0.65. Experimental results indicate that random fiber laser with high time–domain stability is suitable for single-fiber imaging. This work is conducive to further study of fiber imaging and provides guidance for novel fiber communication and flexible endoscopy.

Abstract:We present in principle a free-space optical coding/decoding method that based on the longitudinal braiding period of the structured laser beam. Different from the conventional techniques that mainly focuses on the field of time, frequency, amplitude, polarization and spatial structure, the longitudinal structure is added as a new freedom in our optical link. By combining the topological charge and propagation angle in the transmitter, the longitudinal intervals between the detectors are utilized as the key for decoding. The system using the braiding period as the information carrier has an advantage in security for it is difficult to be eavesdropped. The realization of the hexadecimal coding/decoding suggests that employing the braiding period as a new dimension may have a potential in increasing the capacity or security of the OAM-based free-space data transmission.

Abstract:Multimode fibers are attractive for a variety of applications such as internet data transfer, data center hubs, micromanipulation, optogenetics and other biomedical applications. A major hurdle for imaging through multimode fibers is the occurring scrambling, resulting in a randomization of light. Recently, clear imaging has been successfully accomplished using wavefront shaping, but the spatial information was transferred synchronously only. We demonstrate asynchronous information transmission using individual phase conjugations by employing only one spatial light modulator with multiple windows. Our findings pave the way towards individual signal transfer inside strongly scattering media.

Abstract:The propagation of coherent light in multimode optical fibers results in a speckled output that is both complex and sensitive to environmental effects. These properties can be a powerful tool for sensing, as small perturbations lead to significant changes in the output of the fiber. However, the mechanism to encode spatially resolved sensing information into the speckle pattern and the ability to extract this information is thus far unclear. In this paper, we demonstrate that spatially dependent mode coupling is crucial to achieving spatially resolved measurements. We leverage machine learning to quantitatively extract this spatially resolved sensing information from three fiber types with dramatically different characteristics and demonstrate that the fiber with the highest degree of spatially dependent mode coupling provides the greatest accuracy.

Abstract:The need to increase data transfer rates constitutes a key challenge in modern information-driven societies. Taking advantage of the transverse spatial modes of light to encode more information is a promising avenue for both classical and quantum photonics. However, to ease access to the encoded information, it is essential to be able to sort spatial modes into different output channels. Here, we introduce a way to customize the sorting of arbitrary spatial light modes. Our method relies on the high degree of control over random scattering processes by preshaping of the phase structure of the incident light. We demonstrate experimentally that various sets of modes, irrespective of their specific modal structure, can be transformed to a broad range of output channel arrangements. Thus, our method enables full access to all of the information encoded in the transverse structure of the field; for example, azimuthal and radial modes. We also demonstrate that coherence is retained in this complex mode transformation, which opens up applications in quantum and classical information science.

Optical Semantic Communication through Multimode Fiber: From Symbol Transmission to Sentiment Analysis

Abstract:We propose and validate a novel optical semantic transmission scheme using multimode fiber (MMF). By leveraging the frequency sensitivity of intermodal dispersion in MMFs, we achieve high-dimensional semantic encoding and decoding in the frequency domain. Our system maps symbols to 128 distinct frequencies spaced at 600 kHz intervals, demonstrating a seven-fold increase in capacity compared to conventional communication encoding. We further enhance spectral efficiency by implementing 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4), achieving 9.12 bits/s/Hz without decoding errors. Additionally, we explore the application of this system for sentiment analysis using the IMDb movie review dataset. By encoding semantically similar symbols to adjacent frequencies, the system's noise tolerance is effectively improved, facilitating accurate sentiment analysis. This work highlights the potential of MMF-based semantic communication to enhance both capacity and robustness in optical communication systems, offering promising applications in bandwidth-constrained and noisy environments.

However, the scattering characteristic and time-varying nature of MMF pose challenges for long-term stable transmission. In this study, we propose a spatial pilot-aided learning framework for MMF image transmission, which effectively addresses these challenges and maintains accurate performance in practical applications. By inserting a few reference image frames into the transmitting image sequence and leveraging a fast-adapt network training scheme, our framework adaptively accommodates to the physical channel variations and enables online model update for continuous transmission. Experimented on 100 m length unstable MMFs, we demonstrate transmission accuracy exceeding 92% over hours, with pilot frame overhead around 2%. Our fast-adapt learning scheme requires training of less than 2% of network parameters and reduces the computation time by 70% compared to conventional tuning approaches. Additionally, we propose two pilot-insertion strategies and elaborately compare their applicability to a wide range of scenarios including continuous transmission, burst transmission and transmission after fiber re-plugging. The proposed spatial pilot-aided fast-adapt framework opens up the possibility for MMF spatial transmission in practical complicated applications.

Abstract:In the realm of spatial information transmission in multimode fiber (MMF), the MMF-based endoscopes and information encryption technologies have garnered considerable attention. However, existing designs are limited to establishing a single connection between one input node and one output node, thus constraining the capacity and application scenarios of MMF spatial information transmission. Here, we demonstrate a new concept of MMF-based physical networking for spatial information transmission, and develop a physical model and implementation method for establishing multi-node networking with various topological structures via cascading MMFs.We experimentally verify the feasibility of parallel transmission of spatial information at multiple nodes in an exemplary three-node MMF network with chain topology, showcasing its capability in transmitting color images through "node multiplexing" with significantly enhanced communication security through long-distance reprogrammable optical encryption. Designing MMF networks based on different node quantities and topological structures can significantly expand the scenarios for MMF spatial information transmission, providing valuable paradigms for various applications such as minimally invasive panoramic endoscopy, low-cost distributed sensing, and scaling optical reservoir computing.

Abstract:Recently, visible light communication (VLC) has become a hot topic owing to its advantages, such as high security, high capacity, and antielectromagnetic interference. VLC has become a potential candidate for indoor access networks due to the feasibility of combining illumination and communication. However, intersymbol interference and random phase rotation induced by the transmission channel will decrease the system performance. Traditional constant modulus algorithm (CMA) performs well in converging constellation, but random phase rotation still exists since CMA is insensitive to phase. We demonstrate an optical fiber and visible light integrated communication system. 960-Mbps multiband geometrically shaping (GS) quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM)-8 transmission is realized. Modified learning vector quantization is employed after CMA equalization to mitigate the impairment induced by both optical fiber and visible light channel. Experimental results indicate the feasibility of the proposed method. The Q factor of GS QAM-8 could be enhanced by 5.98 dB with the proposed method. Abstract:A simple channel model of wireless optical links based spatial coding is described and two basic channel constraints are outlined. For representing the spatial patterns as signal points, a signal space based 2-D orthonormal basis functions is defined. After that, critical measures of performance are also defined as metrics for comparing candidate modulation schemes. Then three candidate modulation schemes exploiting spatial dimensions are proposed, which are spatial on-off keying, spatial pulse position modulation and spatial quadrature amplitude modulation schemes. At last, the three modulation schemes are compared by power efficiency and bandwidth efficiency. The appropriateness of each scheme is also discussed.
