Abstract:We study the generation of correlated photon pairs via spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) in a 15 cm long micro/nano-fiber (MNF). The MNF is properly fabricated to satisfy the phase-matching condition for generating the signal and idler photon pairs at wavelengths of about 1310 and 851 nm, respectively. Photon-counting measurements yield a coincidence-to-accidental ratio of 530 for a photon production rate of about 0.002 (0.0005) per pulse in the signal (idler) band. We also analyze the spectral information of the signal photons originating from SFWM and Raman scattering (RS). In addition to discovering some unique features of RS, we find the bandwidth of the individual signal photons is much greater than the calculated value for the MNF with homogeneous structure. Our investigations indicate the MNF is a promising candidate for developing the sources of nonclassical light and the spectral property of photon pairs can be used to noninvasively test the diameter and homogeneity of the MNF.
Long-range spatio-temporal correlations in multimode fibers for pulse delivery

Abstract:Long-range correlations play an essential role in wave transport through disordered media, but have rarely been studied in other complex systems. Here we discover spatio-temporal intensity correlations for an optical pulse propagating through a multimode fiber with strong random mode coupling. Positive long-range correlation arises from multiple scattering in fiber mode space and depends on the statistical distribution of arrival times. By optimizing the incident wavefront of a pulse, we maximize the power transmitted at a selected time, and such control is significantly enhanced by the long-range spatio-temporal correlation. We provide an explicit relation between the correlation and the power enhancement, which agrees with experimental results. Our work shows that multimode fibers provide a fertile ground for studying complex wave phenomena. The strong spatio-temporal correlation can be employed for efficient power delivery at a well-defined time.

Abstract:We present experimental and numerical studies on principal modes in a multimode fiber with mode coupling. By applying external stress to the fiber and gradually adjusting the stress, we have realized a transition from weak to strong mode coupling, which corresponds to the transition from single scattering to multiple scattering in mode space. Our experiments show that principal modes have distinct spatial and spectral characteristic in the weak and strong mode coupling regimes. We also investigate the bandwidth of the principal modes, in particular, the dependence of the bandwidth on the delay time, and the effects of the mode-dependent loss. By analyzing the path-length distributions, we discover two distinct mechanisms that are responsible for the bandwidth of principal modes in weak and strong mode coupling regimes. Their interplay leads to a non-monotonic transition of the average principal mode bandwidth from weak to strong mode coupling. Taking into account the mode-dependent loss in the fiber, our numerical results are in qualitative agreement with our experimental observations. Our study paves the way for exploring potential applications of principal modes in communication, imaging and spectroscopy.

Twist-Related Speckle Variation in Graded-Index Multimode Fiber

Abstract:We theoretically investigate a twist-related speckle variation in a graded-index multimode fiber. The simulation results show that by increasing the offset splicing distance between a single-mode fiber and a multimode fiber, the speckle pattern tends to be more chaotic. Also, the fiber length is a crucial parameter that affects speckle distribution, and the speckle pattern varies periodically along the torsional-less multimode fiber. By exerting twist on a multimode fiber, the speckle pattern revolves. The rotational angle ascends linearly with a twist angle and this tendency is not affected by an offset distance and a fiber length. The theoretic results disclose a twist-related coupling in the graded-index multimode fiber, provide a novel twist sensing method and show potential application in a high-power laser and an imaging field.

Abstract:Photons occupying multiple spatial modes hold a great promise for implementing high-dimensional quantum communication. We use spontaneous four-wave mixing to generate multimode photon pairs in a few mode fiber. We show the photons are correlated in the fiber mode basis using an all-fiber mode sorter. Our demonstration offers an essential building block for realizing high-dimensional quantum protocols based on standard, commercially available fibers, in an all-fiber configuration.

Abstract:The propagation of coherent light in multimode optical fibers results in a speckled output that is both complex and sensitive to environmental effects. These properties can be a powerful tool for sensing, as small perturbations lead to significant changes in the output of the fiber. However, the mechanism to encode spatially resolved sensing information into the speckle pattern and the ability to extract this information is thus far unclear. In this paper, we demonstrate that spatially dependent mode coupling is crucial to achieving spatially resolved measurements. We leverage machine learning to quantitatively extract this spatially resolved sensing information from three fiber types with dramatically different characteristics and demonstrate that the fiber with the highest degree of spatially dependent mode coupling provides the greatest accuracy.

Abstract:The quantum multimode of correlated fields is essential for future quantum-correlated imaging. Here we investigate multimode properties theoretically and experimentally for the parametric amplified multiwave mixing process. The multimode behavior of the signals in our system stems from spatial phase mismatching caused by frequency resonant linewidth. In the spatial domain, we observe the emission rings with an uneven distribution of photon intensity in the parametric amplified four-wave mixing process, suggesting different spatial modes. The symmetrical distribution of spatial spots indicates the spatial correlation between the Stokes and anti-Stokes signals. While in the frequency domain, the multimode character is reflected as multiple peaks splitting in the signals’ spectrum. A novelty in our experiment, the number of multimodes both in the spatial and frequency domains can be controlled by dressing lasers by modifying the nonlinear susceptibility. Finally, we extend the multimode properties to the multiwave mixing process. The results can be applied in quantum imaging.

Abstract:Mode control in multimode optical fibers (MMFs) is an emerging technology for information transmission, which has been studied extensively for ultra-thin fiber endoscopes and optical communication. Here, we propose the concept of spectral shaping to modulate light spatially through a MMF. Experimental results show that the proposed method can realize arbitrary spatial mode control by shaping the spectra of the input light. Benefitting from the wavelength-dependent mode control, two scenarios of spatial-sensitive information transmission are demonstrated, i.e., encrypted information transmission and dual-channel transmission. This work expands ways of mode modulation (spatial control) in MMFs to the spectral domain, providing a new perspective for light control with high feasibility, simple operation, concise scheme, all-fiber structure, and abundant degrees of modal freedom.

Abstract:Concurrent spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) processes have proved to be an appealing approach for engineering the path-entangled photonic state with designable and tunable spatial modes. In this work, we propose a general scheme to construct high-dimensional path entanglement and demonstrate the basic properties of concurrent SPDC processes from domain-engineered quadratic nonlinear photonic crystals, including the spatial modes and the photon flux, as well as the anisotropy of spatial correlation under noncollinear quasi-phase-matching geometry. The overall understanding about the performance of concurrent SPDC processes will give valuable references to the construction of compact path entanglement and the development of new types of photonic quantum technologies.

Abstract:Light transport in a highly multimode fiber exhibits complex behavior in space, time, frequency and polarization, especially in the presence of mode coupling. The newly developed techniques of spatial wavefront shaping turn out to be highly suitable to harness such enormous complexity: a spatial light modulator enables precise characterization of field propagation through a multimode fiber, and by adjusting the incident wavefront it can accurately tailor the transmitted spatial pattern, temporal profile and polarization state. This unprecedented control leads to multimode fiber applications in imaging, endoscopy, optical trapping and microfabrication. Furthermore, the output speckle pattern from a multimode fiber encodes spatial, temporal, spectral and polarization properties of the input light, allowing such information to be retrieved from spatial measurements only. This article provides an overview of recent advances and breakthroughs in controlling light propagation in multimode fibers, and discusses newly emerging applications.

Abstract:The frequency and spatial multimode of correlated fields are seen as essential resources for future multimode entanglement and quantum networks. Here, we present multimode properties from the process of parametric amplified cascaded four-wave mixing through a rubidium atomic ensemble under dressing and Kerr nonlinear effects. The experimental results complement the theoretical simulations. Three frequency modes and 34 spatial spots were experimentally observed due to the double-dressing and Kerr effect of the two pump fields. Further, it is verified that changing the pump field frequency has a larger line shift over pump field power and the angle between the two pump fields, which can be realized as a multicontact switch. Through a dressing effect, interestingly the number of coherent channels also increases by the order of dressing, indicating a large possibility of frequency and spatial multimode. These results will have important applications in quantum communications.

Abstract:Generalized perfect optical vortices (GPOVs) with controllable shapes have attracted much attention recently due to their distinctive features and potentials towards broad range of applications. However, when GPOVs transmit through a multimode fiber (MMF), speckles are generated due to mode dispersion and superposition in the MMF, which limits the applications of GPOVs in MMFs. In this study, we proposed a transmission matrix-based point spread function (TM-PSF) engineering method combined with the free lens strategy to generate GPOVs of different shapes, sizes, and topological charges (TCs) at the distal end of a MMF. An off-axis holography method is applied during the measurement of the transmission matrix (TM) to further ensure the quality of the generated GPOVs. With further refinement, the proposed method is expected to empower high-capacity orbital angular momentum-multiplexing optical communications through MMFs and enhance the flexibility and efficiency of fiber-based optical manipulation through MMFs.

Abstract:Control of the properties of speckle patterns produced by mutual interference of light waves is important for various applications of multimode optical fibers. It has been shown previously that a high signal-to-noise ratio in a multimode fiber can be achieved by preferential excitation of lower order spatial eigenmodes in optical fiber communication. Here we demonstrate that signal spatial coherence can be tailored by changing relative contributions of the lower and higher order multimode fiber eigenmodes for the research of speckle formation and spatial coherence. It is found that higher order spatial eigenmodes are more conducive to the final speckle formation. The minimum speckle contrast occurs in the lower order spatial eigenmodes dominated regime. This work paves the way for control and manipulation of the spatial coherence of light in a multimode fiber varying from partially coherent or totally incoherent light.

Abstract:Speckle patterns are inherent features of coherent light propagation through complex media. As a result of interference, they are sensitive to multiple experimental parameters such as the configuration of disorder or the propagating wavelength. Recent developments in wavefront shaping have made it possible to control speckle pattern statistics and correlations, for example using the concept of the transmission matrix. In this article, we address the problem of correlating scattered fields across multiple degrees of freedom. We highlight the common points between the specific techniques already demonstrated, and we propose a general framework based on the singular value decomposition of a linear combination of multiple transmission matrices. Following analytical predictions, we experimentally illustrate the technique on spectral and temporal correlations, and we show that both the amplitude and the phase of the field correlations can be tuned. Our work opens up new perspectives in speckle correlation manipulation, with potential applications in coherent control.

Abstract:Abstract Multimode fibers (MMFs) are gaining renewed interest for nonlinear effects due to their high-dimensional spatiotemporal nonlinear dynamics and scalability for high power. High-brightness MMF sources with effective control of the nonlinear processes would offer possibilities in many areas from high-power fiber lasers, to bioimaging and chemical sensing, and to intriguing physics phenomena. Here we present a simple yet effective way of controlling nonlinear effects at high peak power levels. This is achieved by leveraging not only the spatial but also the temporal degrees of freedom during multimodal nonlinear pulse propagation in step-index MMFs, using a programmable fiber shaper that introduces time-dependent disorders. We achieve high tunability in MMF output fields, resulting in a broadband high-peak-power source. Its potential as a nonlinear imaging source is further demonstrated through widely tunable two-photon and three-photon microscopy. These demonstrations provide possibilities for technology advances in nonlinear optics, bioimaging, spectroscopy, optical computing, and material processing.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes in fibers process great potentials in providing, from a higher dimension, extra communication channels to meet the ever-growing bandwidth requirement for modern information infrastructures. Long period fiber gratings are commonly used to generate these modes in fibers by coupling fundamental modes to degenerate higher order modes. In order for the generation process to be selective for a certain OAM mode, careful control of the state of polarization (SOP) is required for input fundamental modes. Here, we propose a non-conventional long period fiber grating with not only longitudinal index modulation but also azimuthal parity-time symmetry index modulation, and by placing this grating system at the parity-time exceptional point, an OAM mode with its topological charge matched to the parity-time modulation could be exclusively excited by using any fundamental modes with an arbitrary SOP except for the particular SOP with exactly opposite helicity. Our concept demonstrated here to generate OAM modes in fibers may open up promising applications in parity-time OAM-fiber optics. Published under license by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:The rapid development of information and communication technology has driven the demand for higher data transmission rates. Multi-core optical fiber, with its ability to transmit multiple signals simultaneously, has emerged as a promising solution to meet this demand. Additionally, due to its characteristics such as multi-channel transmission, high integration, spatial flexibility, and versatility, multi-core optical fibers hold vast potential in sensing applications. However, the manufacturing technology of multi-core fiber is still in its early stages, facing challenges such as the design and fabrication of high-quality cores, efficient coupling between cores, and the reduction of crosstalk. In this paper, an overview of the current status and future prospects of multi-core fiber manufacturing technology has been presented, and their limitations will be discussed. Some potential solutions to overcome these challenges will be proposed. Their potential applications in optical fiber sensing will also be summarized.

Abstract:None-line-of-sight (NLOS) optical wireless scattering communication over broad spectra can further increase the transmission rate beyond single wavelength scattering communication. A fundamental question is to investigate the link gain correlation over multiple wavelengths, which may lead to more efficient communication design and optimization approaches. We investigate the link gain correlation over multiple wavelengths under varying transmission media environments and transceiver geometries, and show that the link gain vector can be represented in a reduced dimensional space using principle components analysis (PCA). We also justify such correlation properties theoretically through a simplified single-scattering model. The link gain prediction is formulated as a joint continuous and discrete optimization problem, and is transformed into tractable forms. Linear prediction approaches are proposed based on zero-forcing (ZF) and linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) criteria. It is seen that the LMMSE-based approach generally leads to lower prediction error compared with the ZF-based one, especially for the scenario with large residual eigenvalues of the link gain covariance matrix. We also investigate the link rates on multiple wavelengths, which also exhibit strong correlation for negligible background radiation intensity.
