Abstract:We propose the generation of 3D linear light bullets propagating in free space using a single passive optical surface. The device is a single-layer photonic crystal slab. It can automatically transform an incident conventional Gaussian pulse into a light bullet in the reflection. Our approach also provides simultaneous control of various properties including group velocity, spin, and orbital angular momentum. Our results may advance practical applications of light bullet.

Abstract:Structured light characterized by spatially inhomogeneous optical fields found rich applications in optical communication, sensing, microscopy, manipulation, and quantum information. While generation of structured light has been extensively studied in linear optics, the nonlinear optical process, particularly in two-dimensional (2D) materials, is an emerging alternative for generating structured light at shorter wavelengths. In this work, we theoretically demonstrate that radially and azimuthally polarized beams and vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum could be generated at second-harmonic frequencies by using 2D material-based metasurfaces comprising the same transition-metal dichalcogenide meta-atoms. Manipulation of translations and orientations of anisotropically nonlinear meta-atoms exhibiting a threefold rotation-symmetrical crystalline structure induces strong nonlinear spin-orbital coupling, which enables simultaneous control of spatial phase and polarization in second-harmonic generation. The nonlinear transition-metal dichalcogenide metasurface proposed is promising for on-chip integration of nonlinear generation of structured light.

Abstract:We report a self-accelerating wave packets eigenmode solution of a two-dimensional (2D) nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NNLSE) with an Airy-beam time-dependence, and present their spatiotemporal profiles. The behaviours of such Airy-Laguerre-Gaussian light bullets, as propagated in a strongly nonlocal nonlinear medium (SNNM), are investigated both analytically and numerically. We found that the generation, control, and manipulation of the NL spatiotemporal light bullets are affected by the radial mode number and the azimuthal mode number, as well as the modulation depth. Our scheme is quite different from the linear light bullets, in which the wave propagates in a NL medium and is an eigenmode of NLSE.
Discrete vector light bullets in coupled χ 3 nonlinear cavities

Abstract:We consider coupled weakly birefringent cavities filled-in with nonlinear Kerr material and subject to linearly polarized optical injection. Light propagation in such a system is described by a system of discrete Lugiato–Lefever-type equations for each linear polarization component of the electric field into each cavity, coupled by the cross-phase modulation terms and the neighboring waveguides field overlap integrals. We demonstrate that this system supports stable three-dimensional vector localized structures often called discrete vector light bullets. We consider both anomalous and normal dispersion and show that it results in the generation of, respectively, bright and dark discrete vector light bullets. Due to the polarization multistability of the system, we demonstrated coexisting light bullets with polarization at the light bullets peaks as different as predominantly linear to predominantly circular. We have shown that chaotic spatio-temporal dynamics can be realized even for such an injection strengths for which the light bullets distribution in the system is stationary by increasing the coupling strength C between the cavities.

Abstract:Searching for three-dimensional spatiotemporal solitons (also known as light/optical bullets) has recently attracted keen theoretical and experimental interests in nonlinear physics. Currently, optical lattices of diverse kinds have been introduced to the stabilization of light bullets, while the investigation for the light bullets of gap type -- nonlinear localized modes within the finite gap of the underlying linear Bloch spectrum -- is lacking. Herein, we address the formation and stabilization properties of such light gap bullets in periodic media with defocusing nonlinearity, theoretically and in numerical ways. The periodic media are based on two-dimensional periodic standing waves created in a coherent three-level atomic system which is driven to the regime of electromagnetically induced transparency, which in principle can also be replaced by photonic crystals in optics or optical lattices in ground-state ultracold atoms system. The temporal dispersion term is tuned to normal (positive) group velocity dispersion so that to launch the light gap bullets under self-repulsive nonlinearity; two types of such light gap bullets constructed as 3D gap solitons and vortices with topological charge m=1 within the first finite gap are reported and found to be robustly stable in the existence domains. On account of the light bullets were previously limited to the semi-infinite gap of periodic media and continuous nonlinear physical systems, the light gap bullets reported here thus supplement the missing type of three-dimensional spatiotemporal localized modes in periodic media which exhibit finite band gaps.

Abstract:We report the bulletlike propagation of light pulse in a particularly designed two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal. Unlike traditional light bullet supported by nonlinear materials, this bulletlike propagation is achieved only by 2D photonic crystal, where the diffraction and the group velocity dispersion of a light pulse are eliminated naturally by combining two distinct properties of photonic crystal, i.e., self-collimation and zero group velocity dispersion. Moreover, we studied the influence of third order dispersion on the propagation of light bullet and found that it can be greatly suppressed by an improved structure of photonic crystal.
Light bullets in a nonlocal Rydberg medium with PT-symmetric moiré optical lattices

Abstract:Realizing stable light bullets in high dimensions is a long-standing goal in the study of nonlinear optics. Here, we propose a scheme for the creation of stable light bullets (LBs) in a cold Rydberg atomic gas system with PT symmetry moiré optical lattices. Depending on the synergetic local and nonlocal Kerr nonlinearities, and PT symmetry moiré optical lattices, we obtain an appropriate nonlocal Rydberg long-range interaction and PT symmetry potential which can compensate for the diffraction and dispersion of the probe field. Numerical results show that different spatial and temporal distributions of LBs, including fundamental, multi-pole solitons, and vortical ones are uncovered, and their stabilities are evaluated through linear-stability analysis and direct simulation with perturbation. Furthermore, the solitons exhibit a quasi-elastic collision in the transversal direction during propagation. Our study provides a new route for manipulating LBs via controlled optical nonlinearities and PT symmetry moiré optical lattices in cold Rydberg gases.

Abstract:We address the stability of light bullets supported by Bessel optical lattices with out-of-phase modulation of the linear and nonlinear refractive indices. We show that spatial modulation of the nonlinearity significantly modifies the shapes and stability domains of the light bullets. The addressed bullets can be stable, provided that the peak intensity does not exceed a critical value. We show that the width of the stability domain in terms of the propagation constant may be controlled by varying the nonlinearity modulation depth. In particular, we show that the maximum energy of the stable bullets grows with increasing nonlinearity modulation depth. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Structured light is a key component of many modern applications, ranging from superresolution microscopy to imaging, sensing, and quantum information processing. As the utilization of these powerful tools continues to spread, the demand for technologies that enable the spatial manipulation of fundamental properties of light, such as amplitude, phase, and polarization grows further. In this respect, technologies based on liquid-crystal cells, e.g., spatial light modulators, became very popular in the last decade. However, the rapidly advancing field of integrated photonics allows entirely new routes towards beam shaping that not only outperform liquid-crystal devices in terms of speed, but also have substantial potential with respect to robustness and conversion efficiencies. In this study, we demonstrate how a programmable integrated photonic processor can generate and control higher-order free-space structured light beams at the click of a button. Our system offers lossless and reconfigurable control of the spatial distribution of light's amplitude and phase, with switching times in the microsecond domain. The showcased on-chip generation of spatially tailored light enables an even more diverse set of methods, applications, and devices that utilize structured light by providing a pathway towards combining the strengths of programmable integrated photonics and free-space structured light.

Abstract:Miniaturized and reconfigurable interfaces between confined optical modes within integrated photonic chips and structured light propagating in free space would serve as a cornerstone for fundamental optical science and modern photonic technology. In this work, we present nonlinear nanophotonic chip-space interfaces capable of flexibly generating and multi-dimensionally engineering structured light via injections of photons to on-chip waveguides. By harnessing the nonlinear Cherenkov radiation in integrated nonlinear microring resonators, we successfully tailor the spatial profile, polarization state, emission wavelength, topological charge and temporal wave packet of structured optical vortices, exhibiting reconfigurabilities and tuning ranges far beyond the state-of-the-art. To further showcase the capabilities of our platform, we use a single pump to generate multi-state integrated vortex microcombs in the visible range via synergistic χ(2) and χ(3) nonlinear optical processes. Our work bridges the research fields of structured light and integrated optics, providing unprecedented opportunities to spatiotemporal light generation, on-chip nonlinear optics and integrated quantum photonics.

Abstract:Uninhibited control of the complex spatiotemporal quantum wave function of a single photon has so far remained elusive even though it can dramatically increase the encoding flexibility and thus the information capacity of a photonic quantum link. By fusing temporal waveform generation in an atomic ensemble and spatial single-photon shaping, we hereby demonstrate for the first time complete spatiotemporal control of a propagation invariant (2+1)D Airy single-photon optical bullet. Abstract:Previous methods for the generation of accelerating beams are mostly based on bulky phase-only spatial light modulator. Here we propose an experimental scheme for the generation of accelerating beams by fabricating a quartz plate capable of realizing both phase and amplitude modulation. The phase modulation is implemented by aligned 16-level etching into the quartz plate, while the amplitude modulation is realized by controlling the duty ratio of the partial metal coverage locally. Based on this approach, a sinusoidal accelerating beam with multiple bending is generated for demonstration and propagates along a sinusoidal trajectory as expected.

Abstract:Introducing randomness into structured light beams will open up new degrees of freedom (DOFs) in the light fields, such as degree of polarization and spatial coherence. However, precise control of the two DOFs in experiment still face a challenge. Here, we present a simple, yet flexible technique for nearly real-time generation of any physical realizable stochastic structured light beam (SSLB) with all controllable beam parameters, for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. We experimentally demonstrate the tailoring of beam amplitude, phase, polarization and auto/cross-correlation functions simultaneously through two types of SSLBs. Our approach offers new opportunities to arbitrarily manipulate polarization state of structured light beams inside the Poincaré sphere and has vital applications in free-space optical communications and optical imaging.

Dissipative Light Bullets in Passively Mode-Locked Semiconductor Lasers

Abstract:We demonstrate the existence of stable three dimensional dissipative localized structures in the output of a laser coupled to a distant saturable absorber. These phase invariant light bullets are individually addressable and can be envisioned for three dimensional optical information storage. An effective theory provides for an intuitive picture and allows to relate their formation to the morphogenesis of static auto-solitons and cellular patterns. The complexity incurred by the widely different time scales present in the problem as well as by non-local couplings that stem from the material degrees of freedom is circumvented by the use of a multiple time-scale analysis. This provides a powerful model enabling to tackle effectively the three dimensional case.

Abstract:Vortex beam is a new type of structured light field carrying orbital angular momentum, with a spirally distributed phase surface. It has great application potential in fields such as quantum entanglement, quantum telecommunication, and microparticle control. With further research, structured light carrying more complex topological structures, phase singularities, orbital angular momentums, and polarization singularities than traditional vortex beams has been produced and has drawn the attention of many researchers. Focusing on two distinct mechanisms, i. c., generating spatially structured light straight from a solid -laser cavity and controlling the light field out of solid -laser cavity, we introduce methods on off-axis pumping and astigmatism conversion from the cavity, modulating elements from the cavity, pump shaping from the cavity, customizing the optical field out of cavity by a spatial light modulator, mode superposition out of cavity, and controlling the metasurface microstructures out of cavity. Moreover, the strengths and weaknesses of these methods and the trend in the development of spatial structured light have been described in this article.
Spatial cage solitons -- taming light bullets

Abstract:Multimode nonlinear optics offers to overcome a long-standing limitation of fiber optics, tightly phase locking several spatial modes and enabling the coherent transport of a wavepacket through a multimode fiber. A similar problem is encountered in the temporal compression of multi-mJ pulses to few-cycle duration in hollow gas-filled fibers. Scaling the fiber length to up to six meters, hollow fibers have recently reached 1 TW of peak power. Despite the remarkable utility of the hollow fiber compressor and its widespread application, however, no analytical model exists to enable insight into the scaling behavior of maximum compressibility and peak power. Here we extend a recently introduced formalism for describing mode-locking to the spatially analogue scenario of locking spatial fiber modes together. Our formalism unveils the coexistence of two soliton branches for anomalous modal dispersion and indicates the formation of stable spatio-temporal light bullets that would be unstable in free space, similar to the temporal cage solitons in mode-locking theory. Our model enables deeper understanding of the physical processes behind the formation of such light bullets and predict the existence of multimode solitons in a much wider range of fiber types than previously considered possible.

Abstract:We show that unique optical properties of metamaterials open unlimited prospects to "engineer" light itself For example, we demonstrate a novel way of complex light manipulation in few-mode optical fibers using metamaterials highlighting how unique properties of metamaterials, namely the ability to manipulate both electric and magnetic field components, open new degrees of freedom in engineering complex polarization states of light. We discuss several approaches to ultra-compact structured light generation, including a nanoscale beam converter based on an ultra-compact array of nano-waveguides with a circular graded distribution of channel diameters that coverts a conventional laser beam into a vortex with configurable orbital angular momentum and a novel, miniaturized astigmatic optical element based on a single biaxial hyperbolic metamaterial that enables the conversion of Hermite-Gaussian beams into vortex beams carrying an orbital angular momentum and vice versa. Such beam converters is likely to enable a new generation of on-chip or all-fiber structured light applications. We also present our initial theoretical studies predicting that vortex-based nonlinear optical processes, such as second harmonic generation or parametric amplification that rely on phase matching, will also be strongly modified in negative index materials. These studies may find applications for multidimensional information encoding, secure communications, and quantum cryptography as both spin and orbital angular momentum could be used to encode information; dispersion engineering for spontaneous parametric down-conversion; and on-chip optoelectronic signal processing.
Time-of-flight resolved stimulated Raman scattering microscopy using counter-propagating ultraslow Bessel light bullets generation

Abstract:We present a novel time-of-flight resolved Bessel light bullet-enabled stimulated Raman scattering (B2-SRS) microscopy for deeper tissue 3D chemical imaging with high resolution without a need for mechanical z-scanning. To accomplish the tasks, we conceive a unique method to enable optical sectioning by generating the counter-propagating pump and Stokes Bessel light bullets in the sample, in which the group velocities of the Bessel light bullets are made ultraslow (e.g., vg ≈ 0.1c) and tunable by introducing programmable angular dispersions with a spatial light modulator. We theoretically analyze the working principle of the collinear multicolor Bessel light bullet generations and velocity controls with the relative time-of-flight resolved detection for SRS 3D deep tissue imaging. We have also built the B2-SRS imaging system and present the first demonstration of B2-SRS microscopy with Bessel light bullets for 3D chemical imaging in a variety of samples (e.g., polymer bead phantoms, biological samples such as spring onion tissue and porcine brain) with high resolution. The B2-SRS technique provides a > 2-fold improvement in imaging depth in porcine brain tissue compared to conventional SRS microscopy. The method of optical sectioning in tissue using counter-propagating ultraslow Bessel light bullets developed in B2-SRS is generic and easy to perform and can be readily extended to other nonlinear optical imaging modalities to advance 3D microscopic imaging in biological and biomedical systems and beyond.
