Abstract:We propose and generate a class of structured light fulfilling the mathematical form of a SU(2) coherent state based on a set of circular Airy vortex modes. Such wave packets possess strong focus with both radial and angular self-accelerations, which exploit more general 3D inhomogeneous velocity control with global spatial symmetry of multilayer rotation akin to galactic kinematics, termed galaxy waves. Galaxy waves are endowed with higher degrees of freedom to control strong focusing and acceleration, which opens a direction of multi-dimensional accelerating of 3D structured light field, promising numerous applications in optical trapping, manufacturing, and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:Optical singularity is pivotal in nature and has attracted wide interest from many disciplines nowadays, including optical communication, quantum optics, and biomedical imaging. Visualizing vortex lines formed by phase singularities and fabricating chiral nanostructures using the evolution of vortex lines are of great significance. In this paper, we introduce a promising method based on two-photon polymerization direct laser writing (2PP-DLW) to record the morphology of vortex lines generated by tightly focused multi-vortex beams (MVBs) at the nanoscale. Due to Gouy phase, the singularities of the MVBs rotate around the optical axis and move towards each other when approaching the focal plane. The propagation dynamics of vortex lines are recorded by 2PP-DLW, which explicitly exhibits the evolution of the phase singularities. Additionally, the MVBs are employed to fabricate stable three-dimensional chiral nanostructures due to the spiral-forward property of the vortex line. Because of the obvious chiral features of the manufactured nanostructures, a strong vortical dichroism is observed when excited by the light carrying orbital angular momentum. A number of applications can be envisioned with these chiral nanostructures, such as optical sensing, chiral separation, and information storage.

Abstract:Structured light with more controllable degrees-of-freedom (DoFs) is an exciting topic with versatile applications. In contrast to conventional vector vortex beams (VVBs) with two DoFs of orbital angular momentum (OAM) and polarization, a hybrid ray-wave structure was recently proposed [Optica 7(7), 820-831 (2020)], which simultaneously manifests multiple DoFs such as ray trajectory, coherent state phase, trajectory combination, besides OAM and polarization. Here we further generalize this exotic structure as the astigmatic hybrid VVB by hatching a new DoF of astigmatic degree. Importantly, the transverse topology varies with propagation, e.g. a linearly distributed hybrid trajectory pattern can topologically evolve to a circularly polygonal star shape, where the number of singularity changes from zero to multiple in a single beam. The propagation-dependent evolution can be easily controlled by the astigmatic degree, including as a vector vortex state such that different astigmatic trajectories have different polarizations. We experimentally generate such beams from a simple laser with a special astigmatic conversion by combined spherical and cylindrical lenses, and the results agree well with our theoretical simulation. With our new structured light, the propagation-multiplexing multi-DoF patterns can be controlled in a single beam, which can largely extend related applications such as high-dimensional large-capacity optical communication, laser machining, and particle trapping.

Abstract:Vortex beam is a new type of structured light field carrying orbital angular momentum, with a spirally distributed phase surface. It has great application potential in fields such as quantum entanglement, quantum telecommunication, and microparticle control. With further research, structured light carrying more complex topological structures, phase singularities, orbital angular momentums, and polarization singularities than traditional vortex beams has been produced and has drawn the attention of many researchers. Focusing on two distinct mechanisms, i. c., generating spatially structured light straight from a solid -laser cavity and controlling the light field out of solid -laser cavity, we introduce methods on off-axis pumping and astigmatism conversion from the cavity, modulating elements from the cavity, pump shaping from the cavity, customizing the optical field out of cavity by a spatial light modulator, mode superposition out of cavity, and controlling the metasurface microstructures out of cavity. Moreover, the strengths and weaknesses of these methods and the trend in the development of spatial structured light have been described in this article.

Abstract:Vector vortex beams are conventionally created as the superposition of orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes with orthogonal polarizations, limiting the available degrees of freedom (DoFs) to 2, while their creation by complex optical devices such as metasurfaces, liquid crystals, and interferometers has hindered their versatility. Here we demonstrate a new class of vector vortex beam constructed from four DoFs as multiple ray-like trajectories with wave-like properties, which we create by operating a simple anisotropic microchip laser in a frequency-degenerate state. Our new structure is obtained by the superposition of two stable periodic ray trajectories, simultaneously fulfilling a completed oscillation in the cavity. By a simple external modulation, we can transform our ray trajectories into vortex beams with large OAM, multiple singularities, as well as exotic helical star-shaped patterns. Our experimental results are complemented by a complete theoretical framework for this new class of beam, revealing parallels to hybrid SU(2) coherent states. Our approach offers in principle unlimited DoFs for vectorial structured light with concomitant applications, for example, in engineering classically entangled light and in vectorial optical trapping and tweezing. Abstract:The topological evolution of classic eigenmodes including Hermite-Laguerre-Gaussian and (helical) InceGaussian modes is exploited to construct coherent state modes, which unifies the representations of travelingwave (TW) and standing-wave (SW) ray-wave structured light for the first time and realizes the TW-SW unified ray-wave geometric beam with topology of raytrajectories splitting effect, breaking the boundary of TW and SW structured light. We experimentally generate these new modes with high purity and dynamic control by digital holography method, revealing potential applications in optical manipulation and communication.

Abstract:Optical vortices, a type of structured beam with helical phase wavefronts and 'doughnut'-shaped intensity distributions, have been used to fabricate chiral structures in metals and spiral patterns in anisotropic polarization-dependent azobenzene polymers. However, in isotropic polymers, the fabricated microstructures are typically confined to non-chiral cylindrical geometry due to the two-dimensional 'doughnut'-shaped intensity profile of the optical vortices. Here we develop a powerful strategy to realize chiral microstructures in isotropic material by coaxial interference of a vortex beam and a plane wave, which produces threedimensional (3D) spiral optical fields. These coaxial interference beams are generated by designing contrivable holograms consisting of an azimuthal phase and an equiphase loaded on a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator. In isotropic polymers, 3D chiral microstructures are achieved under illumination using coaxial interference femtosecond laser beams with their chirality controlled by the topological charge. Our further investigation reveals that the spiral lobes and chirality are caused by interfering patterns and helical phase wavefronts, respectively. This technique is simple, stable and easy to perform, and it offers broad applications in optical tweezers, optical communications and fast metamaterial fabrication.
Transverse spin and orbital angular momenta in rotating-wave structured light

Abstract:Within monochromatic optical fields, we demonstrate the rotating-wave structured light with wave vortex carrying an intrinsic transverse orbital angular momentum orthogonal to the propagation direction of light. Remarkably, we find that such a rotating-wave structured light reveals highly nontrivial features of transverse spin and orbital angular momentum densities. The normalized total angular momentum density is conserved universally, suggesting a mutual conversion of the intrinsic transverse spin and orbital angular momentum in free space. Despite such mutual conversion at local level, the integral intrinsic orbital angular momentum can be well defined with the topological charge of the vortex per photon. Moreover, the orientation of transverse spin density is governed by the direction of the Poynting momentum density, manifesting a spin-momentum-locking effect in free space.

Abstract:It is an interesting and meaningful exploration to produce a new type of multi-dimensional spatiotemporal light field with non-diffraction and self-focusing properties. In this paper, a novel scheme is proposed to construct a tunable weak chirp dual Airy Bessel vortex (CdAiBV) spatiotemporal wave packet (WP), and the generation experimental setup is also demonstrated. Significantly, the generated higher-order wave packet carries optical vortices with a complex structure and presents propagation-invariant property within a fairly long distance. Dependence of the targeted wave packet's non-diffraction properties and self-focusing effects on the topological charge n and phase mask's control parameter β , and influence of the initial frequency chirp coefficients C1 and C2 on the acceleration and deceleration characteristics of the temporal Airy pulse and the spatiotemporal structure of the CdAiBV wave packet are investigated. Furthermore, evolution of the topological phase, energy flow, and orbital angular momentum (OAM) density of higher-order wave packets propagating in the time-space domain are considered. Results demonstrate that the generated spatiotemporal CdAiBV wave packet would undergo a process of spatial "autofocus to defocus" and temporal "deceleration and collapse" during propagation, and only a fairly weak chirp is needed in such a process. It is also noted that the optical vortex is well confined in the space-time domain, and preserves intact spiral wavefront structure and conserved topological charge. What's more, the transverse energy flow rotates periodically, and the central irradiance increases continuously when increase the propagation distance. Our work realized the separation and combination of the intertwined time and space variables, and further revealed the propagation dynamics of spatiotemporal structured light fields.

Abstract:Exploring the physics and potential applications of vectorially structured light with propagation-invariant transverse structures has benefited many areas of modern optics and photonics. In this paper, we investigate the noneigenvector modes of paraxial light fields, focusing on the propagation variations and revivals of their transverse structures, including both spatial and polarization structures. We show that the physical mechanism behind the variations and revivals of their transverse structure is linked to the evolution of the intramodal phases between the constituting spatial modes. Such evolution originates from fractional Gouy phases, or rather, geometric-phase difference between spatial modes with different orders under a same unitary transformation. This underlying principle provides a general guideline for shaping vectorially structured light with custom propagation-evolution properties, and may also inspire a wide variety of new applications based on structured light. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevA.103.053520 ©2021 American Physical Society

Abstract:Structured light has been created by a myriad of near- and far-field techniques and has found both classical and quantum applications. In the case of orbital angular momentum (OAM), continuous spiral phase patterns in dynamic or geometric phase are often employed with the phase patterns existing across the entire transverse plane. Here we exploit the uncertainty relation between OAM and angle to create structured OAM fields using multilevel OAM holograms. We show theoretically and experimentally that only a multilevel angular phase contour in the near-field is needed to create structured OAM light in the far-field, exploiting the reciprocal nature of angular momentum and angle. We use this approach to demonstrate exotic 3D structured light control to show the evolution of the Poynting vector in such fields and to highlight the physics underlying this phenomenon.

Abstract:Structured light refers to the arbitrarily tailoring of optical fields in all their degrees of freedom (DoFs), from spatial to temporal. Although orbital angular momentum (OAM) is perhaps the most topical example, and celebrating 30 years since its connection to the spatial structure of light, control over other DoFs is slowly gaining traction, promising access to higher-dimensional forms of structured light. Nevertheless, harnessing these new DoFs in quantum and classical states remains challenging, with the toolkit still in its infancy. In this perspective, we discuss methods, challenges, and opportunities for the creation, detection, and control of multiple DoFs for higher-dimensional structured light. We present a roadmap for future development trends, from fundamental research to applications, concentrating on the potential for larger-capacity, higher-security information processing and communication, and beyond.

Abstract:Self-healing and transverse accelerating optical vortices are generated via modulating Gaussian beams through subsequent liquid crystal q-plate and polarization Airy mask. We analyze the propagation dynamics of these vortex Airy beams, and find that they possess the features of both optical vortices and Airy beams. Topological charges and characteristics of nondiffraction, self-healing, and transverse acceleration are experimentally verified. In addition, vortex Airy beams with both topological charge and radial index are demonstrated and mode switch among Gaussian, vortex, vector, Airy beams and their combinations can be acquired easily. Our design provides a flexible and highly efficient way to generate unique optical vortices with self-healing and transverse acceleration properties, and facilitates prospective applications in optics and photonics.
Digitally Tailoring Arbitrary Structured Light of Generalized Ray-Wave Duality.

Abstract:Structured lights, particularly those with tunable and controllable geometries, are highly topical due to a myriad of their applications from imaging to communications. Ray-wave duality (RWD) is an exotic physical effect in structured light that the behavior of light can be described by both the geometric ray-like trajectory and a coherent wave-packet, thus providing versatile degrees of freedom (DoFs) to tailor more general structures. However, the generation of RWD geometric modes requires a solid-state laser cavity with strict mechanical control to fulfill the ray oscillation condition, which limits the flexiblility of applications. Here we overcome this confinement to generate on-demand RWD geometric modes by digital holographic method in free space without a cavity. We put forward a theory of generalized ray-wave duality, describing all previous geometric modes as well as new classes of RWD geometric modes that cannot be generated from laser cavities, which are verified by our free-of-cavity creation method. Our work not only breaks the conventional cavity limit on RWD but also enriches the family of geometric modes. More importantly, it offers a new way of digitally tailoring RWD geometric modes on-demand, replacing the prior mechanical control, and opening up new possibilities for applications of ray-wave structured light.

Abstract:We theoretically propose and experimentally generate the nondiffracting Bessel–Poincaré beams whose Stokes vortices radially accelerate during propagation. To this end, we design the Bessel beams whose intensity is specified to be uniformly distributed along the longitudinal direction. By superposing two such Bessel beams having different helical phases and mutually orthogonal polarizations, the synthesized vector beam is endowed with the polarization singularity that can rotate about the optical axis, while the total intensities maintain their profiles. Radially self-accelerating Stokes vortices in the resulting beam can be manipulated by adjusting the predefined parameters in the constituent beams.
