Abstract:Furfuryl alcohol is a widely-used organic chemical. Catalytic hydrogenation is currently used in the production of furfuryl alcohol from furfural, which has disadvantages of high hydrogen consumption and cost. Catalytic transfer hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol by Cu-Pd/Al2O3 in near-critical isopropanol was proposed in this study. Cu-Pd/Al2O3 catalysts with different Cu and Pd loading were prepared via co-precipitation and characterized with XRD and BET. Effects of Cu-Pd/Al2O3 catalyst composition, catalyst loading, furfural concentration, reaction temperature and reaction time on the catalytic transfer hydrogenation were investigated. The results show that the 18%Pd/Cu-2%/Al2O3 bimetallic catalyst has the best catalytic activity. 100% furfural conversion and 86.4% furfuryl alcohol yield are achieved with 18%Cu-2%Pd/Al2O3 at 190℃ for 3 h. Good catalytic activity is maintained after 4 recycling use. The method proposed has advantages of zero hydrogen consumption, high furfuryl alcohol yield and good catalyst reusability.

Abstract:Based on that the aqueous-phase reforming of methanol and liquid phase hydrogenation of furfural have similary reaction conditions (temperature, pressure and in the liquid phase) on the Raney Ni catalyst, liquid phase in-situ reduction of furfural with hydrogen from the aqueous-phase reforming of methanol were investigated. The combination of the two reactions (hydrogen production and hydrogenation) is optimized in terms of reaction temperature, the ratio of substrate, and the amount of catalyst. The in-situ hydrogenation furfural shows a higher selectivity for furfuryl alcohol than the traditional hydrogenation method with molecular H-2 under the optimal conditions, i.e., 120 degrees C, 0.8 MPa, and the volume ratio of H2O:CH3OH: C5H4O2 = 25:125:5. Thus it could provide a new route for the selective hydrogenation of furfural into furfuryl alcohol.

Abstract:Non-noble metal catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of biomass using biomass-derived formic acid (FA) as hydrogen source is one of promising strategies for relieving fossil energy crisis. Since acidic FA would destroy and deactivate naked active sites, developing heterogeneous catalysts with stabilized structure and activity that are qualified in harsh conditions is highly desirable but challenging. Herein, mesoporous N-doped carbon encapsulated Co catalysts (Co-N-C) are synthesized through a facile carbonization of Co(phen)(2)(OAc)(2) with nano-MgO as porogen agent. After acid treatment, the optimized Co-N-C-700 (pyrolyzed at 700 degrees C) could afford full furfural (FAL) conversion as well as > 99% furfuryl alcohol (FOL) selectivity with only 3.5 equiv. FA at 150 degrees C for 6 h, exhibiting much superior performance than commercial Pd-, Pt- and Ru-based catalysts. Using molecular H-2 as hydrogen source not only affords low conversion but also leads to over-hydrogenation of FOL and generation of furfuryl formate (FF). This catalyst is very stable in acidic FA and could be recycled 5 times without deactivation or leaching. Co-N-C-700 is also capable for gram-scale transfer hydrogenation of FAL and is versatile for other aldehydes with > 90% yield of desired products. This work could promote the application of encapsulated Co-based catalysts for selective transformation of biomass in chemical industry.

Abstract:With the dwindling availability of fossil fuel resources and the dramatic increase in demand, 5-methoxymethylfurfural (MMF) obtained from renewable biomass resources has great potential as a fossil fuel alternative. In this work, a high yield (80.5%) of MMF was obtained from fructose catalyzed by Amberlyst-15 with the assistance of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in methanol at 100 degrees C for 10 h. Based on a detailed investigation of the reaction mechanism through the effects of DMSO, Amberlyst-15, reaction time, and reaction temperature on MMF yield and the existence of intermediates proved by FTIR, a two-step pathway was proposed: (1) DMSO and H ion on Amberlyst-15 act as a joint-catalyst [DMSOH](+), facilitating the dehydration of fructose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and (2) [DMSOH](+) assists the etherification of HMF with methanol into MMF, which is the rate-determining step. This finding expands the concept of biomass conversion into biomass fuels and plays a vital role in catalyst screen and design, reaction medium selection, and industrial applications.

Abstract:DFF's diverse applications in pharmaceuticals, fungicides, and polymer synthesis motivate the development of efficient production methods. This study reports the continuous-flow synthesis of DFF from 5-HMF in a packed-bed reactor. The Box–Behnken design coupled with response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize the reaction parameters (catalyst, solvent, temperature, oxygen flow rate, catalyst amount) for DFF yield. Ru/Al 2 O 3 in toluene proved to be the most effective catalyst–solvent combination. The optimal conditions for DFF production were identified as: 140 °C reaction temperature, 10 ml min −1 oxygen flow rate, and 0.15 g catalyst loading. Under these conditions, a DFF yield of 84.2% was achieved.

Abstract:The three‐phase hydrodeoxygenation reaction of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) with H2 was studied over a 10 wt % Pt/C catalyst using both batch and flow reactors, with ethanol, 1‐propanol, and toluene solvents. The reaction is shown to be sequential, with HMF reacting first to furfuryl ethers and other partially hydrogenated products. These intermediate products then form dimethyl furan (DMF), which in turn reacts further to undesired products. Furfuryl ethers were found to react to DMF much faster than HMF, explaining the higher reactivity of HMF when alcohol solvents were used. With the optimal residence time, it was possible to achieve yields approaching 70% in the flow reactor with the Pt/C catalyst. Much higher selectivities and yields were obtained in the flow reactor than in the batch reactor because side products are formed sequentially, rather than in parallel, demonstrating the importance of choosing the correct type of reactor in catalyst screening. © 2014 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 61: 590–597, 2015

Abstract:The direct one-pot conversion of furfural to 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MTHF) was investigated in liquid phases using H2 as a hydrogen source over a bimetallic Cu–Pd/HY catalyst. This catalyst showed excellent catalytic reactivity toward the formation of 2-MTHF with a yield of 83.1% under optimized reaction conditions. By adjusting the Cu/Pd ratio in the catalyst, the desired product could be obtained selectively. This was due to (1) selective catalysis of Cu toward C=O bonds in furfural, (2) excellent hydrogenation ability of Pd, and (3) the synergistic effects between Cu, Pd, and the acidic sites of the support HY. The influences of other parameters on conversion and selectivity were also investigated. Mechanism studies revealed that reactions mainly perform through the hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol and then hydrodeoxygenation to 2-methylfuran followed by furan ring hydrogenation to 2-MTHF. Finally, after five recycling runs, this catalyst still displayed high catalytic behavior and stability, which provided a certain foundation for future research of furfural catalytic hydrogenation to 2-MTHF.

Abstract:5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) and furfural (FUR) have been recognized as valuable biomass-derived platform chemicals and bridge between biomass raw materials and the biorefinery industry, utilizing as a building blocks for the production of many chemicals and fuels. In this review, we aim to discuss the utilization of process intensification (PI) techniques within the biorefining industry, focusing on 5-HMF and FUR production and sequential purifications. These approaches such as reactive extraction in biphasic systems (in microreactor), reactive adsorption, reactive distillation (with stripping) and pervaporation assisted reaction are considered as the future of biorefining and have been surveyed in this paper. The reactive extraction in a tubular slug-flow microreactor and a stirred reactor-extractor-settler configuration, as the most simple, cheap and effective approach, are discussed. In general, the highest product yields were observed in an aqueous system catalyzed with mineral acids, while the purification and recycling of acids is also laborious and very costly which exacerbates its application. The combination of the solid-acid catalysts (metal oxides, silica, alumina, metal phosphates, zeolites, heteropolyacids or their mixture) in water/MIBK and water/THF biphasic solvent systems with adding of NaCl (which improved both extraction power and product selectivity) is the most promising approach. The best reaction performance was demonstrated in the microreactor but at the same time, the latter is sensitive to plugging from humins formation with long time-on-stream. Finally, for the large scale of FUR production, the pervaporation assisted continuous membrane reactor showed one of the highest potential.

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a monomer that can be used to produce bioplastic, which has gained increasing interest worldwide. The production of FDCA from catalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is regarded as the major route of the utilization of 5-HMF. In this work, FDCA was produced in a tubular reactor packed with Pt/C. The effects of operating parameters including reaction temperature, molar ratio of 5-HMF/NaOH, volumetric flow rate of oxygen, pressure, and catalyst amount on the yield of product were investigated. High oxygen supply provided by high pressure or high oxygen flow rate effectively decreased the yield of FDCA. The optimal conditions were at the reaction temperature of 90 °C, the molar ratio between 5-HMF and NaOH of 1 : 8, the oxygen flow rate of 33.9 mL min −1 and atmospheric pressure, providing the yield of FDCA of 86.4% and full conversion of 5-HMF. The productivity of 0.1266 kg FDCA kg cat. −1 h −1 was achieved with the residence time of 0.285 s, which was considerably shorter than the reaction times reported in the literature. These results can be used as a foundation for further investigation and for developing a compact processing unit for the production of FDCA.

Furfuryl alcohol from furfural by hydrogenation under atmospheric pressure

Abstract:A series of Cu catalysts for hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol under normal pressure have been studied in a fixed-bed flow reactor. A non-toxic and highly selective catalyst FDK-1 has been found. The effects of reaction conditions on the catalytic activity are examined and a yield of furfuryl alcohol as high as 98% is obtained. Results of XRD and AES show that the catalytic activity depends on Cu 0 and the structure of the active unit is Cu-Zn-O (�� is oxygen vacancy).

Abstract:Furfural has become one of the most promising building blocks directly derived from biomass. It can be transformed into numerous important biobased chemicals. Among them, furfuryl ethers such as furfuryl ethyl ether (FEE) and tetrahydrofurfuryl ethyl ether (THFEE) are considered to be attractive derivatives, notably as fuel components, due to their high stability and high octane numbers. Therefore, the production of furfuryl ethers from furfural via a hydrogenation route is an important academic and industrial challenge and requires the deployment of new catalytic processes under green and competitive reaction conditions. The existing processes are based on a two-step process combining hydrogenation and reaction with a strong Bronsted acid catalyst in batch conditions. For the first time, a continuous flow one-step process has been elaborated for the conversion of furfural directly into furfuryl ethers based on reductive etherification. The present work explores the catalytic performance in a continuous flow of commercial palladium catalysts supported on activated carbon for the catalytic reductive etherification of furfural with ethanol in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid. The chemical and engineering aspects, such as the mechanisms and reaction conditions, will be discussed.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF) based heterogeneous catalysts have been widely used in furfural (FFR) hydrogenation. As numerous studies related to the conversion of FFR to high value-added chemicals, it is urgently necessary to thoroughly review the recent research progress for better achieving the commercial application in the future. This review summarized recent advances, classified by different reaction paths, relating to the upgrading of FFR over MOF-based heterogeneous catalysts, including MOFs, MOF derivatives and MOF composites. In addition, some critical issues and perspectives in the hydrogenation of FFR to high-value-added chemicals over MOF-based catalysts were also summarized. This review will provide valuable guidance for the preparation and rational design of MOF-based heterogeneous catalysts for upgrading FFR to high-value-added chemicals.

Abstract:Furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) have been identified as promising bio-platform furans that have a wide range of potential applications as biofuels, bioplastics, and biochemicals. Furfural and HMF are typically synthesized from the substrates of C5 sugars and C6 sugars, respectively. Furfural can also be produced from C6 sugars, which is technically more challenging owing to the higher energy requirement for carbon–carbon bond cleavage. In this study, the simultaneous production of furfural and HMF from glucose was conducted over different binary catalyst systems of Brønsted acids and Lewis acids using γ-valerolactone (GVL) as the solvent. A promising performance was achieved by a SnSO4-H2SO4 coupling catalyst, with an optimized furfural yield of 42% and an HMF yield of 34% at 443 K in GVL. In addition, a kinetics study was performed in order to understand the mechanism of the simultaneous formation of furfural and HMF from glucose at different temperatures and GVL/water ratios. The results showed that the ratio of furfural to HMF production rate at different temperatures (433 to 463 K) or GVL/water ratios (90 to 80%) was constant close to 1, suggesting that the production of furfural and HMF might follow similar reaction pathways. Finally, the reaction pathway of glucose conversion to furfural and HMF was proposed based on the experimental and kinetics studies.

Abstract:2-methyltetrahydrofuran, a biomass-derived chemical, is an important solvent with broad applications in organic chemistry. In this study, one-pot conversion of furfural into 2-methyltetrahydrofuran over non-precious metal catalysts was achieved by two-stage packing in a single reactor. The first stage converted furfural into 2-methylfuran over Co-based catalysts, and the second stage converted 2-methylfuran into 2-methyltetrahydrofuran over Ni-based catalysts. In order to reveal the reaction pathway and mechanism of this process, the hydrogenation reactions of 2-methylfuran, furfuryl alcohol, and tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol were also carefully investigated. It is discovered that the conversion of furfural into 2-methylfuran could be catalyzed by Lewis acid sites, which was confirmed by a correlation between 2-methylfuran production rate and Lewis acid site density. Also, a mechanism on the direct conversion of furfural into 2-methylfuran without forming furfuryl alcohol as the intermediate is proposed. The experimental results of 2-methylfuran, furfuryl alcohol, and tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol hydrogenation/hydrodeoxygenation over various catalysts provided valuable information on the future design of 2-methyltetrahydrofuran catalyst.

Abstract:Transformation of furfural, a typical biomass-derived robust platform molecule, into value-added chemical furfuryl alcohol has drawn intense attention. The conventional supported catalysts which are restricted in the microporous regime suffered from high mass diffusion resistances and limited catalytic activity. We herein demonstrate the synthesis of a series of transition-metal catalysts by using hierarchical porous H-UiO-66 as the support for highly efficient conversion of furfural to furfuryl alcohol. The unique nanoarchitecture endows the catalyst with low mass diffusion resistance, high accessibility of metal active sites and high durability in the liquid phase reaction. A nearly quantitate yield of furfuryl alcohol was achieved over the Pd/H-UiO-66 catalyst at 60 °C, 0.5 MPa H2 in the aqueous medium within 3 h.

Abstract:In recent years, the conversion of biomass-derived platform compounds into a variety of high value fuel and chemical products has attracted increasing attention from researchers. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and furfural (FFR) belong to a class of important biomass-derived platform chemicals. The molecular structure of HMF and FFR is consisted of aldehyde group, furan ring and other functional groups, which endow them with unique chemical properties. In this paper, the research advances on the catalytic hydrogenation of HMF and FFR using various hydrogen sources, such as hydrogen, alcohol, silanes and formic acid, have been reviewed in detail. In addition, the main influencing factors like catalyst type and reaction conditions on the hydrogenation process as well as the reaction mechanism are discussed in depth. Meanwhile, research foreground in the catalytic hydrogenation of HMF/FFR has been prospected.

Abstract:A Pd/UiO-66 catalyst was synthesized with well-dispersed Pd nanoparticles. The obtained catalyst was tested in the hydrogenation of furfural to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol in various solvents, Water was found to be the most suitable solvent. Pd/UiO-66 exhibited much higher activity than Pd/SiO2 and Pd/γ-Al2O3, completely converting furfural to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol with 100% selectivity under mild conditions. The hydrogenation of CO moiety in tetrahydrofurfural was rate-determining step. Static adsorption measurement indicated that the adsorption of furfural on UiO-66 was significantly stronger than that on SiO2 or γ-Al2O3, suggesting that the adsorption play an important role in the gas-liquid-solid furfural hydrogenation reaction.

Abstract:In this work, electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) of furfural to furfuryl alcohol was studied. Experiments were run in a H-type cell in aqueous solution with a platinum sheet as anode. Platinum (Pt), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) were used as cathode materials. As expected, the cathode material, which serves as the hydrogenation catalyst, was found to have a large effect on the ECH of furfural. Among the cathode materials studied, the Pt gave the best product selectivity. So cathodic reduction was catalyzed by platinum supported on activated carbon fibers(Pt/ACF), a novel electrocatalyst. Incipient wetness impregnation and electrodeposition methods were employed to prepare the electrocatalyst. Catalysts prepared by impregnation method were more active than prepared using electrodeposition method, presumably because of more active surface area. When using impregnation method, 3%Pt/ACF showed the best activity and current efficiency, followed by 5%Pt/ACF. Effects of electrolyte on product yield and current efficiency were also investigated. The yield of furfuryl alcohol was highest in the 0.1M HCl. The initial furfural concentration and the electrolytic potential also strongly affected the product yield and current efficiency.
