Abstract:Co2C nanoprisms were developed for the Fischer-Tropsch to olefins (FTO) reaction a few years ago, while to the best of our knowledge, the study of the electronic promoters were hardly reported due to the instability of the Co2C nanostructures with promoters. The absence of the promoters limited the performance modulation and industrial application of the Co2C-based FTO catalysts. The work reported here was aimed at developing a new strategy to synthesize the Zn-promoted Co2C nanoprisms and understanding the electronic effects of the Zn promoters on the Co2C facets without confusion over the geometric effects. Detailed characterizations of the carbonized and spent samples suggested that the Zn promoters lowered the stability of the Co2C nanostructures and led to the formation of the surface Co-0 species in the spent samples with high Zn contents, which was responsible for the decrease of the O/P ratios and the increase of the CH4 selectivity. The XPS results showed that the electrons transferring from the Zn promoters to the Co2C facets enriched the density of the electron clouds of the Co species on the Co2C facets. Further evidence for the enhanced CO adsorption and dissociation routes were obtained from the measurements of the CO temperature-programmed desorption. The Zn promoters increased the strong adsorption sites, which were not active for the Boudouard reaction and the increase of the CO2 selectivity originated from the Water-Gas Shift reaction. The activation route of the adsorbed CO species on the strong adsorption sites was H-assisted dissociation rather than direct dissociation, resulting in the inhibition of the carbene-mediated routes and the shifting of product selectivity toward light hydrocarbons.

Abstract:ABSTRACT: A series of Fe-based catalysts with accurately controlled amount of Na are synthesized to investigate the relationship between the promoter and the catalytic performance for CO2 hydrogenation to alkenes. With the increasing amount of Na, both CO2 conversion and alkenes selectivity increase at low and moderate amount and then plateau (with the highest to be 36.8% and 64.3%, respectively), while the corresponding methane production decreases to 7.2%. It is found that the addition of Na enhances the adsorption of CO2, facilitates the formation and stability of active species--Fe5C2, and inhibits the secondary hydrogenation of alkenes. All these effects lead to the desirable catalytic performance. Besides, it is observed that the content of Fe5C2 is related to the amount of Na. This study can provide scientific guidance to the design and the synthesis of high-efficiency catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to high-value chemicals.

Abstract:The interaction between a promoter and an active metal crucially impacts catalytic performance. Nowadays, the influence of promoter contents and species has been intensively considered. In this study, we investigate the effect of the iron (Fe)–zinc (Zn) proximity of Fe–Zn bimetallic catalysts on CO 2 hydrogenation performance. To eliminate the size effect, Fe 2 O 3 and ZnO nanoparticles with uniform size are first prepared by the thermal decomposition method. By changing the loading sequence or mixing method, a series of Fe–Zn bimetallic catalysts with different Fe–Zn distances are obtained. Combined with a series of characterization techniques and catalytic performances, Fe–Zn bimetallic proximity for compositions of Fe species is discussed. Furthermore, we observe that a smaller Fe–Zn distance inhibits the reduction and carburization of the Fe species and facilitates the oxidation of carbides. Appropriate proximity of Fe and Zn (i.e., Fe 1 Zn 1 -imp and Fe 1 Zn 1 -mix samples) results in a suitable ratio of the Fe 5 C 2 and Fe 3 O 4 phases, simultaneously promoting the reverse water–gas shift and Fischer–Tropsch synthesis reactions. Abstract:In2O3-supported Ni catalysts exhibit remarkable catalytic activity and selectivity in CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, but the underlying mechanisms and metal-oxide interactions during the reaction remain elusive. Herein, we investigate the Ni-In2O3 interaction by physical vapor deposition of Ni onto well-defined In2O3(111) thin films. In-situ near ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) was employed to probe the CO2 hydrogenation processes on these Ni/In2O3(111) model systems. Our results reveal that the small Ni clusters supported on the In2O3(111) surface at low Ni coverages exhibit cationic states. The chemical bonding and associated electron transfer at the Ni/In2O3(111) interface play crucial roles in the activation of H2 and CO2. Importantly, reaction intermediates (CO3*, OH, and HCOO*) are readily formed and desorbed under CO2 hydrogenation conditions. Our study highlights the significance of metal-support interactions on the selectivity of CO2 hydrogenation. These findings provide valuable insights into the rational design of advanced In2O3-based catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation.

Abstract:Ni-based catalysts are widely investigated non-noble metal-based systems for CO 2 methanation. However, their industrial application is still limited due to lower activity at low-temperature and catalyst deactivation. Incorporating a second metal such as Ru and Fe is considered as a successful strategy to overcome these challenges through alloy formation or the synergies provided by the interplay of two adjacent metallic sites. Nonetheless, their promotional effect on the CO 2 methanation mechanism under similar conditions has not been reported yet. In this work, Fe and Ru-promoted Ni/ZrO 2 catalysts were investigated to evaluate their promotional effect on the mechanism. The Ni/Fe ratio was first optimized and a CO 2 conversion rate of 37.7 mmolCO 2 /(mol Ni+Fe s) and 96.3% CH 4 selectivity was obtained over the Ni 0.8 Fe 0.2 /ZrO 2 catalyst. In comparison with Ni 0.8 Fe 0.2 /ZrO 2 , Ni 0.8 Ru 0.2 /ZrO 2 prepared with the same composition showed higher activity and stability in CO 2 methanation. Characterization results indicate alloys formation and H spillover for Ni 0.8 Ru 0.2 /ZrO 2 to be responsible for promotion. Besides, in situ DRIFTS studies evidenced the occurrence of both CO 2 dissociative and associative pathways over Ni 0.8 Ru 0.2 /ZrO 2 catalyst, while solely the CO 2 associative pathway occurred for Ni 0.8 Fe 0.2 /ZrO 2 .

Abstract:CO 2 methanation involves the utilization of renewable hydrogen, greenhouse gases CO 2 as raw materials to transform them into clean energy sources in the form of methane. This procedure is of great significance for conserving energy and reducing emissions. In this study, a series of Ni/ZSM-5 catalysts with different Si/Al ratios were prepared. H 2 -TPR and XPS were employed to explore the influence of Al content on the properties of the Ni species. The adsorption properties of the reactants on the different Ni/ZSM-5 catalysts were investigated by CO 2 -TPD and H 2 -TPD. Moreover, as H 2 O is produced during the reaction, contact angle measurement were conducted to investigate the hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of the samples. It is suggested that the ZSM-5 Si/Al ratio (or Al content) affected both Ni dispersion and catalyst hydrophilicity. The higher Al content in ZSM-5 improved Ni dispersion. However, high hydrophilicity is unfavorable for product removal, leading to poor catalytic performance. As a result, the Ni/ZSM-5 (41) sample with appropriate Si/Al exhibited good catalytic performance with CO 2 conversion of 64 % and CH 4 selectivity of >98 % at 350 °C. The CO 2 conversion and CH 4 selectivity remained at the initial level after reaction for 72 h. This indicates that the Ni/ZSM-5 (41) catalyst has excellent stability. Based on the characterization after the reaction, it can be observed that the catalyst exhibits good carbon deposition resistance and stability. Therefore, the choice of zeolite acid amount is crucial for the reaction performance. This study will provide guideline for the development of high-performance catalysts for CO 2 methanation-loaded Ni.

Abstract:CO2 hydrogenation over ZrO2-supported NiFe catalysts is investigated to illustrate the role of Fe in controlling the activity and selectivity, and to reveal the structure-function relationship between metaloxide interfaces and catalytic selectivities. The Ni-ZrO2 interfaces and Ni-FeOx interfaces are identified as the most likely active sites for the methanation reaction and the reverse water-gas shift reaction, respectively, using combined in-situ and ex-situ characterization techniques. The reaction mechanisms of CO2 hydrogenation to CH4 on the Ni-ZrO2 interfacial sites and to CO on the Ni-FeO C interfacial sites are further revealed by combined in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Both experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that the binding energy of absorbed CO (*CO) is a key descriptor to predict CO2 hydrogenation selectivity: weak interaction (e.g., Ni-Fe0 x interfaces) promotes *CO desorption to increase CO selectivity, while moderate interaction (e.g., Ni-ZrO2 interfaces) facilitates further hydrogenation of *CO to produce CH4. Abstract:Aseries of ZnO-modified cobaltous ion exchanged ZSM-5 catalysts is prepared using incipient wetness impregnation and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N 2 adsorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DR UV-Vis), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), pyridine-adsorbed Fourier transform infrared (Py-IR) and Raman. Their catalytic performance towards CO 2 -assisted dehydrogenation of ethane to ethylene has been evaluated. The addition of ZnO onto CoZSM-5 obviously improved the yield of ethylene as well as the conversion of CO 2 . The promoting effect is attributed to the good activity of ZnO for the reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction, which enhances the coupling between RWGS and ethane dehydrogenation.

Boosting Low-Temperature CO2 Hydrogenation over Ni-based Catalysts by Tuning Strong Metal-Support Interactions.

Abstract:Rational design of low-cost and efficient transition-metal catalysts for low-temperature CO2 activation is significant and poses great challenges. Herein, a strategy via regulating the local electron density of active sites is developed to boost CO2 methanation that normally requires >350 ℃ for commercial Ni catalysts. An optimal Ni/ZrO2 catalyst affords an excellent low-temperature performance hitherto, with a CO2 conversion of 84.0%, CH4 selectivity of 98.6% even at 230 ℃ and GHSV of 12,000 mL·g-1·h-1 for 106 h, reflecting one of the best CO2 methanation performance to date on Ni-based catalysts. Combined a series of in-situ spectroscopic characterization studies reveal that re-constructing monoclinic-ZrO2 supported Ni species with abundant oxygen vacancies can facilitate CO2 activation, owing to the enhanced local electron density of Ni induced by the strong metal-support interactions. These findings might be of great aid for construction of robust catalysts with an enhanced performance for CO2 emission abatement and beyond.

Abstract:The conversion of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into high-value products plays a critical role in mitigating atmospheric CO 2 levels. Recently, low-cost Ni-based catalysts have been garnering attention due to their exceptional hydrogenation ability. This study focuses on the synthesis of Cu-Ni bimetallic catalysts for CO 2 hydrogenation and the systematic evaluation of the relationship between structural evolution and catalytic activity. Through investigation of the selectivity regulation of Cu on Ni-based catalysts, it was discovered that the addition of Cu led to a significant shift in catalytic activity and selectivity. Specifically, the Cu addition transitioned the reaction from being CH 4 -selective to CO-selective. Moreover, the introduction of Cu preferentially generated a Cu-Ni alloy during the reaction, which resulted in a significant number of *CO species with strong adsorption strength at the interface. Consequently, the subsequent hydrogenation of these *CO species was impeded, rendering the catalyst CO-selective.

Abstract:Aiming at a comprehensive understanding of support effects on Ni-based bimetallic catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation, spectroscopy (DRIFTS) with CO as a probe molecule and temperature-programmed techniques were used to investigate the impact of different supports (MgO, CeO2, ZrO2) on Ni- and Ni,Fe catalysts. Kinetic parameters revealed that the higher selectivity to methanation for Ni and Ni,Fe supported on the reducible oxides (CeO2, ZrO2) is due to the inhibition of reverse water-gas shift reaction (RWGS) by hydrogen. A promoting effect of Fe on Ni was only observed on MgO-supported catalysts. In situ DRIFTS with CO adsorption showed different electronic properties of Ni sites with partially reduced oxide (i.e. ZrO2 and CeO2). H2-TPR and CO2-TPD confirmed the significant role of metal-support interaction (MSI) in CeO2-supported catalysts for CO2 activation. The MSI between Ni/Ni,Fe and reducible supports are crucial for catalytic performance, ultimately leading to the higher activity and stability in CO2 hydrogenation.

Abstract:As a pure combustible gas with a high calorific value, methane has long been favored, and that is why the CO2 methanation reaction is attracting more and more attention. However, it is still challenging for this reaction due to the chemical inertness of CO2 molecules, poor reaction efficiency at low temperatures, catalyst sintering at high temperatures, and carbon monoxide toxicity. Herein, the ammonia evaporation method was utilized to synthesize a series of Zn-modified Ni/SiO2 catalysts with high surface area and high dispersity of active metals. The 80Ni-Zn/SiO2 catalyst with an appropriate Ni/Zn molar ratio of 80:1 exhibited a high-performance breakthrough with a CO2 conversion greater than 80% at 300 °C, good stability for 40 h at 310 °C, and a gas hourly space velocity of 18,000 mL·g–1·h–1. These catalysts were further characterized by using a series of methods like in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy to investigate the structural properties and potential reaction pathways. The effect of the Zn promoter on the Ni/SiO2 catalyst for CO2 methanation has been well investigated, namely, improving Ni dispersion and enhancing the H2 adsorption. The findings demonstrate the broad availability, affordability, and remarkable high-performance practicability of the raw ingredients for the production of Ni-based catalysts for commercial applications.

Regulation of Ni-CNT Interaction on Mn-Promoted Nickel Nanocatalysts Supported on Oxygenated CNTs for CO2 Selective Hydrogenation.

Abstract:Mn-promoted Ni nanoparticles (NPs) supported on oxygen-functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were synthesized for CO2 hydrogenation to methane. This novel metal-carbon catalytic system was characterized by both experimental and computational studies. An anomalous metal-support interaction mode (i.e., a higher temperature would lead to a weakened Ni-CNT interaction) was observed. Deep investigation confirmed that surface oxygen groups (SOGs) on CNTs played a key role in tuning the Ni-CNT interaction. We proposed that high calcination temperature would firstly lead to the decomposition of SOGs (>400 °C), then causing a loss of anchoring sites and the anchoring effect of SOGs on Ni NPs, thus cutting off the connection between interfacial Ni atoms and CNT body, resulting in the migration and coalescence of fine flat Ni NPs into larger sphere ones at 550 °C (geometric effect). Density functional theory calculation study clarified that this kind of anchoring effect stemmed from the formation of covalent bonding between the interfacial Ni atom and C or O elements of SOGs, causing the electrons to be transferred from Ni atoms to CNT support because of the intrinsic electronegativity of -COOH (electronic effect). Besides, Mn promotion notably boosts the activity compared with unpromoted catalysts, which was irrelevant to the size effect, but enhanced CO2 adsorption and conversion according to the result of CO2-temperature programmed desorption and transient response experiment. The optimized NiMn350 catalyst endowed with Mn promotion and robust Ni-CNT interaction showed both high activity and sintering resistance for more than 140 h. Abstract:Controlling the selectivity of CO2 hydrogenation by catalysis is a fundamental challenge. This study examines the interrelation between active sites and reaction pathways in Ni-catalyzed CO2 hydrogenation. The alloying of Ni with Zn to charged (Niσ––Znσ+) active sites modifies the electronic structure and d-band center, weakens the interaction with CO/H2, and preferentially catalyzes the reverse water gas shift to CO with the thermodynamically favored methanation pathway switched off. The charged dual sites can stabilize the activated CO2 species in a η2(C, O) bridge configuration, directly dissociate the CO bond to *CO, and promote CO desorption. The mechanistic investigation has elucidated the reaction pathways in the Ni-catalyzed CO2 hydrogenation and identified the crucial intermediates that impacted the product selectivity, which can provide a theoretical guide for the Ni-based catalyst design.

Abstract:This study focuses on the catalytic reaction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) hydrogenation using 0.5 wt% nickel (Ni) deposited on silica oxide support (SiO 2 ). Initially, these Ni clusters exhibit limited catalytic activity and selectivity toward carbon monoxide (CO) formation. However, the introduction of zirconium ions (Zr 4+ ) onto the Ni clusters leads to a remarkable improvement in the catalytic efficiency of CO 2 hydrogenation and methane (CH 4 ) production. The interaction between Ni and ZrO 2 generates interfacial sites that play a multifaceted role. These sites facilitate the binding of acidic CO 2 and promote the atomic hydrogen migration from ZrO 2 to Ni. Consequently, the creation of interfacial sites on the Ni catalysts directly enhances the rate of CO 2 hydrogenation while also increasing CH 4 selectivity. The primary intermediate in this process appears to be monodentate formate species, which can undergo direct decomposition to CO or conversion into formic acid intermediates. The formic acid intermediates subsequently undergo hydrogenation, ultimately leading to the production of CH 4 .

Abstract:An in-depth mechanism in zonal activation of CO 2 and H 2 molecular over dual-active sites has not been revealed yet.Here,Ni-Co-MgO was rationally constructed to elucidate the CO 2 methanation mechanism.The abundant surface nickel and cobalt components as active sites led to strong Ni-Co interaction with charge transfer from nickel to cobalt.Notably,electron-enriched Co δ- species participated in efficient chemisorption and activation of CO 2 to generate monodentate carbonate.Simultaneously,plentiful available Ni 0 sites facilitated H 2 dissociation,thus CO 2 and H 2 were smoothly activated at zones of Co δ- species and Ni 0 ,respectively.Detailed in situ DRIFTS,quasi situ XPS,TPSR,and DFT calculations substantiated a new formate evolution mechanism via monodentate carbonate instead of traditional bidentate carbonate based on synergistic catalysis of Co δ- species and Ni 0 .The zonal activation of CO 2 and H 2 by tuning electron behaviors of double-center catalysts can boost heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation performance.
