Abstract:Most of the coal, oil and natural gas produced in the world are used as fuels and a small part is used as a chemical feedstock. Undesulfurized coal and oil in the combustion process will produce a large number of sulfur oxides (SO x ), serious harm to human health, and environmental damage. The unpurified natural gas containing hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) is difficult for industrial application. This article mainly introduces ionic liquids (ILs) extraction desulfurization, extraction oxidative desulfurization, absorption desulfurization, absorption oxidative desulfurization, including non-metal-based and metal-based ionic liquids. Non-metal-based ionic liquids are not only used to extract inorganic and organic sulfur from coal and fuel oil but also to remove H 2 S and SO 2 . Metal ionic liquids remove sulfides mainly by extractive oxidation and absorption oxidative desulfurization. Ions are catalysts, hydrogen peroxide, and oxygen are oxidants, and oxidation products are sulfoxide and sulfur. However, the high synthesis cost and high viscosity of ILs make it difficult to industrialize on a large scale. Deep eutectic solvents were synthesized cheaply and significant desulfurization effect. It is expected to replace ILs to achieve large-scale industrial applications. Extraction and absorption desulfurization of ILs mainly rely on π–π and hydrogen bonds, while the oxidation process relies on high-valence metal cations and hydrogen peroxide. Understanding the mechanism of ILs can improve the desulfurization effect of ILs on different sulfides in fuels. To develop better economic value, the low value of conventional desulfurization products can be absorbed and combined with unsaturated acids to convert them into high-value thiol acids. The desulfurization efficiency can be improved by adding organic solvents to ionic liquids and nanomaterials.
