Abstract:As a metal-free semiconductor material, graphitic carbon nitride (C3N4), the high recombination rate of photogenerated charges and insufficient sunlight absorption limit its solar-based photocatalytic activity. Here, we reported the heterojunctions of C3N4–Cu2O with a p–n junction structure, which was synthesized by a hydrothermal method. The HR-TEM result revealed an intimate interface between C3N4 and Cu2O in the heterojunction, and UV–vis diffuse reflection spectra showed their extended spectral response in the visible region compared with pure C3N4. These excellent structural and spectral properties, as well as p–n junction structures, endowed the C3N4–Cu2O heterojunctions with enhanced photocatalytic activities. The possible photocatalytic mechanism that photogenerated holes as the mainly oxidant species in photocatalysis was proposed base on the trapping experiments.

Abstract:A facile in situ synthetic method is developed to synthesize metal sulfide nanoparticles based on 2D M-TCPP (M = Cu, Cd, or Co, TCPP = tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin)) metal-organic framework nanosheets. The obtained CuS/Cu-TCPP composite nanosheet is used as the active material in photoelectrochemical cells, showing notably increased photocurrent due to the improved exciton separation and charge carrier transport.
Ascorbic-acid-assisted In-Situ Construction of S-scheme CuO/Cu2O Hetero-Nanosheets with Active Cu(II)-O-Cu(I) Bridges for Efficient CO2 Photoreduction

Abstract:Efficient charge transfer across interfaces is highly desirable, but remains challenging in engineering semiconductor heterojunctions for photocatalysis. In this work, hybrid hetero-nanosheets (HNSs) of CuO/Cu2O bridged with interfacial Cu(II)-O-Cu(I) have been constructed via an in-situ topotactic transformation strategy, in which CuO nanosheets are partially reduced by ascorbic acid and transformed into Cu2O. The interfacial Cu(II)-O-Cu(I) bridges are found to provide fast transfer channels for photogenerated carriers transporting from CuO to Cu2O in an S-scheme pathway, leading to enhanced separation of photogenerated carriers. Furthermore, the bond bridges can tune the kinetic and thermodynamic processes of the CO2-to-CO conversion at interfacial Cu(I) catalytic sites by altering the rate-determined step and shifting downwards d-band center of the Cu(I) sites. Owing to the interfacial Cu(II)-O-Cu(I) bridges, the optimized CuO/Cu2O HNSs significantly expedite the CO2 photoreduction to CO, delivering a CO2 conversion rate of 22.14 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) with a CO selectivity of 94.4%, outperforming the state-of-the-art copper oxide-based photocatalysts. This work demonstrates an effective in-situ topotactic transformation strategy to create interfacial bond bridges at heterogeneous interfaces for boosted photocatalysis as well as the critical roles of interface catalytic sites for CO2 conversion.

Abstract:AbstractGraphitic carbon nitride (CN), as a nonmetallic photocatalyst, has gained considerable attention for its cost‐effectiveness and environmentally friendly nature in catalyzing solar‐driven CO2 conversion into valuable products. However, the photocatalytic efficiency of CO2 reduction with CN remains low, accompanied by challenges in achieving desirable product selectivity. To address these limitations, a two‐step hydrothermal‐calcination tandem synthesis strategy is presented, introducing carbon quantum dots (CQDs) into CN and forming ultra‐thin CQD/CN nanosheets. The integration of CQDs induces a distinct work function with CN, creating a robust interface electric field after the combination. This electric field facilitates the accumulation of photoelectrons in the CQDs region, providing an abundant source of reduced electrons for the photocatalytic process. Remarkably, the CQD/CN nanosheets exhibit an average CO yield of 120 µmol g−1, showcasing an outstanding CO selectivity of 92.8%. The discovery in the work not only presents an innovative pathway for the development of high‐performance photocatalysts grounded in non‐metallic CN materials employing CQDs but also opens new avenues for versatile application prospects in environmental protection and sustainable cleaning energy.

Abstract:A facile solvothermal approach was successfully employed to prepare titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoaggregates with simultaneous copper particles anchoring. The as-synthesized composite could convert CO2 into CH4 and CO products under simulated solar irradiation. The impact of copper loading amounts on the photoreduction capability was evaluated. It was found proper amount of Cu loading could enhance the activity of CO2 photoreduction. As a result, the optimal composite (TiO2-Cu-5%) consisting of TiO2 supported with 5% (mole ratio) Cu exhibits 2.2 times higher CH4 yield and 3 times higher CO yield compared with pure TiO2. Conduction band calculated from the band gap and valence X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated TiO2 nanoaggregates have suitable band edge alignment with respect to the CO2/CH4 and CO2/CO redox potential. Furthermore, with involving of Cu particles, an efficient separation of photogenerated charges was achieved on the basis of photocurrent response and photoluminescence spectra results, which contributed to the improved photocatalytic performance. The present work suggested that the Cu-decorated TiO2 could serve as an efficient photocatalyst for solar-driven CO2 photoreduction.

Ultrathin Nanosheet Assembled Multishelled Superstructures for Photocatalytic CO 2 Reduction

Abstract:Solar-driven conversion of CO2 is considered an efficient way to tackle the energy and environmental crisis. However, the photocatalytic performance is severely restricted due to the insufficient accessible active sites and inhibited electron transfer efficiency. This work demonstrates a general in situ topological transformation strategy for the integration of uniform Co-based species to fabricate a series of multishelled superstructures (MSSs) for CO2 photocatalytic conversion. Thorough characterizations reveal the obtained MSSs feature ultrathin Co-based nanosheet assembled polyhedral structures with tunable shell numbers, inner cavity sizes, and compositions. The superstructures increase the spatial density of Co-based active sites while maintaining their high accessibility. Further, the ultrathin nanosheets also facilitate the transfer of photogenerated electrons. As a result, the ZnCo bimetallic hydroxide featuring an ultrathin nanosheet assembled quadruple-shell hollow structure (ZnCo-OH QUNH) exhibits high photocatalytic efficiency toward CO2 reduction with a CO evolution rate of 134.2 μmol h–1 and an apparent quantum yield of 6.76% at 450 nm. Abstract:The emissions of CO 2 are increasing year by year, which have led to serious environmental problems. Converting CO 2 into valuable fuels through photocatalysis is a promising strategy. In this research, oxygen atoms were successfully innovated into graphitic carbon nitride (CN). Additionally, cobalt porphyrin (CoTPP) was successfully loaded onto the modified carbon nitride (Co/CN). The generation of interfacial electric fields and bending bands between CN and CoTPP was demonstrated experimentally. The electrons in the CN and the holes in the CoTPP were combined to form a unique S-scheme heterojunction structure, and efficient separation of carriers was promoted. As a result, the CO conversion under visible light irradiation reached an impressive 100.70 μmol g −1 h −1 . By integrating theoretical and experimental findings, this study underscores the critical role of catalyst design in enabling efficient photocatalytic CO 2 reduction.

Abstract:Reducing CO2 through artificial photosynthesis is a remarkable strategy for converting solar energy into useful chemical feedstocks. However, most photocatalytic systems suffer from low efficiency owing to insufficient active sites and the lack of a directional charge-transfer channel. Herein, we develop Cu single atoms (SAs) on the nitrogen-doped carbon anchored on TiO2 with the anatase-rutile mixed phase (Cu SAs/TiO2), which shows 100% CO selectivity and high apparent quantum efficiency of 2.0% at 420 nm in photocatalytic CO2 reduction with H2O vapor. Such a high performance is ascribed to the synergetic effect of Cu SAs and phase junction, where Cu SAs act as adsorption and activation sites of CO2 and phase junction accelerates the migration of photogenerated electrons along the Ti-N-Cu-(O-CO2) channel. Theoretical calculation further shows that the strong hybridization of Cu 3d and CO2-O 2p orbitals promotes the electron transfer from Cu SAs to CO2, effectively optimizing the rate-limiting step (CO2* -> COOH*).

Abstract:Building heterostructure of photocatalysts is considered to be promising for boosting the efficiency of CO2 photoreduction. Herein, we constructed Cu2@UiO-66-NH2 ternary nanocubes via a simple solvothermal reaction for efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction to CO and CH4. As UiO-66-NH2 uniformly dispersed on Cu2, the well-defined nanocubes with p–n junctions and the presence of electron mediators endow the catalysts with promoted visible-light-absorbing capability and charge carrier density together with facilitated separation and migration of photogenerated electrons, ultimately resulting in boosted photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity. Benefiting from the ternary nanocube photocatalyst, the yields of CO and CH4 reach to 20.9 and 8.3 μmol g–1 h–1, respectively. S-scheme heterojunction Cu-porphyrin/TiO2 nanosheets with highly efficient photocatalytic reduction of CO2 in ambient air

Abstract:Directly capturing CO2 in ambient air and converting it into value-added fuels using photocatalysis is a potentially valuable technology. In this study, Cu-porphyrin (tetrakis-carboxyphenyl porphyrin copper, CuTCPP) was innovatively anchored on the surface of TiO2 (titanium dioxide) nanosheets to form an S-scheme heterojunction. Based on this, a photocatalytic reaction system for stably converting CO2 in ambient air into value-added fuels at the gas-solid interface was constructed without addition of sacrificial agents and alkaline liquids. Under the illumination of visible light and sunlight, the evolution rate of CO is 56 μmol·g-1·h-1 and 73 μmol·g-1·h-1, respectively, with a potential CO2 conversion rate of 35.8 % and 50.4 %. The enhanced of photocatalytic performance is attributed to the introduction of CuTCPP, which provides additional active sites, significantly improves capture capacity of CO2 and the utilization of electrons. Additionally, the formation of S-scheme heterojunction expands the redox range and improves the separation efficiency of photo-generated charges.
Phase junction crystalline carbon nitride nanosheets modified with CdS nanoparticles for photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Abstract:Polymeric carbon nitrides have presented the massive potential for photocatalytic CO2 reduction, especially the crystalline allotrope, namely, poly (triazine imide) (PTI), that holds extended conjugation for fast charge exciton dissociation. However, pristine PTI suffers from poor visible light absorption, thus inhibiting critically the photocatalytic performance. Herein, crystalline carbon nitride nanosheets composed of PTI and melon phase junctions are in situ constructed from one-pot polycondensation of dicyandiamide and LiCl/KCl in air, which integrated with CdS nanoparticles create the double-junction-involved CCN/CdS hybrids. Physicochemical characterizations reveal that CCN/CdS heterostructures exhibit broad visible-light harvesting, reinforced CO2 adsorption/activation, and promoted separation and transfer of photoinduced charges. Therefore, the optimized CCN/CdS hybrid displays remarkable activity and high stability for photocatalytic CO2-to-CO conversion at a rate of 52 μmol h-1, together with an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 10.8% at 420 nm. The in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) identifies the key intermediates during the CO2 reduction process and thus endorses the proposal of the possible reaction mechanism.

Abstract:Photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into fuels is an auspicious route to alleviate the energy and environmental crisis brought by the continuous depletion of fossil fuels. The CO 2 adsorption state on the surface of photocatalytic materials plays a significant role in its efficient conversion. The limited CO 2 adsorption capacity of conventional semiconductor materials inhibit their photocatalytic performances. In this work, a bifunctional material for CO 2 capture and photocatalytic reduction was fabricated by introducing palladium (Pd)-copper (Cu) alloy nanocrystals onto the surface of carbon, oxygen co-doped boron nitride (BN). The elemental doped BN with abundant ultra-micropores had high CO 2 capture ability, and CO 2 was adsorbed in the form of bicarbonate on its surface with the presence of water vapor. The Pd/Cu molar ratio had great impact on the grain size of Pd-Cu alloy and their distribution on BN. The CO 2 molecules tended to be converted to carbon monoxide (CO) at interfaces of BN and Pd-Cu alloys due to their bidirectional interactions to the adsorbed intermediate species while methane (CH 4 ) evolution might occur on the surface of Pd-Cu alloys. Owing to the uniform distribution of smaller Pd-Cu nanocrystals on BN, more effective interfaces were created in the Pd 5 Cu 1 /BN sample and it gave a CO production rate of 7.74 μmolg −1 h −1 under simulated solar light irradiation, higher than the other PdCu/BN composites. This work can pave a new way for constructing effective bifunctional photo-catalysts with high selectivity to convert CO 2 to CO.

Abstract:In recent years, metal–semiconductor heterojunctions have been intensively researched in the field of photocatalysis due to the effective spatial separation of photo-induced electron-hole pairs. Here, the dual-functional copper (Cu0/Cu2+)-modified SrTiO3-δ nanosheets (Cu/STCO) are successfully synthesized by a two-step route. First, Cu2+-doped SrTiO3-δ (STCO) nanosheets are synthesized by a hydrothermal method and then Cu0 nanoparticles (NPs) are in situ formed from the STCO under H2 atmosphere at 500 °C. The optimized ratio 6 %-Cu/STCO photocatalyst exhibits the best photothermal catalytic performance for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) and H2 evolution performance. The detailed characterization demonstrate that the Cu2+ dopant extend the light absorption range and the in situ generated Cu0 NPs effectively improve the separation ability of photogenerated charge carriers by forming the Schottky contact with STCO. The excited localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of metallic Cu0 in Cu/STCO shows a considerable catalysis performance even under 600 nm monochromatic light irradiation. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the Cu/STCO diminishes the barrier of the rate-determining steps of the CO2RR and H2 evolution thus perform the outstanding catalysis ability in two filed. This work presents the synergistic effect of Cu0 and Cu2+ on enhancing the photothermal catalytic performance for CO2RR and H2 evolution and offers a novel strategy to synthesize the metal–semiconductor nanostructures for efficient harnessing of solar energy into fuel.

Abstract:In this work, H+ in oxalic acid was used instead of Na+ to obtain titanate nanosheets through P200 hydrolysis, which further curled to form a multilayer TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) structure. Then, Cu2O quantum dots (QDs) were successfully loaded on TiO2 NTs by hydrothermal method using fructose as a reducing agent. The optical, impedance, and photocurrent tests indicated that the composite structure improved its optoelectronic performance. The photocatalytic H2 production and CO2 reduction efficiency of Cu2O QDs/TiO2 NTs were lower than those of TiO2 NTs. However, the molar ratio of CH4 to CO produced by CO2 reduction of Cu2O QDs/TiO2 NTs composite catalyst was greater than that of pure TiO2 NTs. The CH4 production accounted for 97%, indicating that the composite catalyst had a high CH4 selectivity. The experimental and DFT calculation results proved that the Z‐scheme heterojunction accelerated the separation and transfer of photo‐generated carriers, and broadened the absorption range of visible light. Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction to value-added fuels displays an attractive scenario to enhance energy supply and reduce global warming. We report herein the confinement synthesis of polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) incorporating with Cu single atoms (CuSAs) inside the crystalline UiO-66-NH2, which combines the merits of heterojunction photocatalysis and single-atom catalysis (SAC) to achieve high-performance CO2-to-CH3OH conversion. A series of spectral studies displays the formation of CuSAs@PCN inside the crystalline UiO-66-NH2. Remarkably, the ternary composite shows an excellent photocatalytic turnover frequency of 4.15 mmol·h-1·g-1 for CO2-to-CH3OH conversion. Theoretical and experimental studies demonstrate the doping of CuSAs, as well as the formation of type-II heterojunction, are causal factors to achieve CH3OH generation. The study provides new insights designing high-performance photocatalyst for CO2 conversion to fuels at atomic scale.

Abstract:Improving the stability of cuprous oxide (Cu2O) is imperative to its practical applications in artificial photosynthesis. In this work, Cu2O nanowires are encapsulated by metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of Cu-3(BTC)(2) (BTC=1,3,5-benzene tricarboxylate) using a surfactant-free method. Such MOFs not only suppress the water vapor-induced corrosion of Cu2O but also facilitate charge separation and CO2 uptake, thus resulting in a nanocomposite representing 1.9 times improved activity and stability for selective photocatalytic CO2 reduction into CH4 under mild reaction conditions. Furthermore, direct transfer of photogenerated electrons from the conduction band of Cu2O to the LUMO level of non-excited Cu-3(BTC)(2) has been evidenced by time-resolved photoluminescence. This work proposes an effective strategy for CO2 conversion by a synergy of charge separation and CO2 adsorption, leading to the enhanced photocatalytic reaction when MOFs are integrated with metal oxide photocatalyst.
Guiding Effective Nanostructure Design for Photo-Thermochemical CO2 Conversion: from DFT Calculations to Experimental Verifications

Abstract:The solar photo-thermochemical cycle (PTC) for the conversion of CO2 into fuels over metal oxides is a novel and promising method to alleviate the increasing energy crisis and worsening global climate change. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the anatase (101) surface of TiO2 and M-doped TiO2 (M = Zn, Ni, and Cu) were performed to provide guidance for enhancing the PTC. Additionally, M-doped TiO2 films were produced using a sol-gel method and applied to the PTC for CO2 conversion to provide experimental verifications. A maximum, stable production of CO of 10.80μmol/g was achieved using Cu-doped TiO2, which was nearly 6.39-fold higher than the amount of CO produced by clean TiO2. The CO yield was in good agreement with the calculation results. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron spin resonance (ESR) were used to evaluate the crystal structures and morphologies. UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectra (UV–visible DRS), photoluminescence (PL) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses were also conducted to investigate the surface charge-transfer and reaction mechanisms. As a result, a complete cycle reaction mechanism for Cu-doped TiO2 was proposed. Several key factors of the mechanism were clarified, and an effective guide for nanostructure design was proposed.

Abstract:The catalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) into value-added chemicals utilizing solar energy is a promising strategy to simultaneously address global warming and the energy crisis. The tree-like Bi2S3 catalytic material, supported by nanotubes with ultrathin nanosheets as reaction sites, was convincingly synthesized. The ultrathin structure can shorten the transfer distance of charge carriers from the interior onto the surface and reduce the recombination in the body compared to the bulk material. To promote the activation of the reactant, the precursor samples were annealed to form sulfur defect engineering on the nanosheets' surface. Both the DFT calculations and in situ FTIR spectra indicate that the introduction of S vacancies into Bi2S3 leads to charge accumulation that effectively traps the formed *COOH molecules, which enriches the catalyst surface with key reaction intermediates, facilitating the photothermal CO2 reduction reaction.
Z-scheme ZnIn2S4/CuxO Heterostructure on Flexible Substrate for Efficient Photothermal Catalytic CO2 Reduction

Abstract:The ZnIn2S4 2 S 4 nanosheets were successfully synthesized on the surface of compacted stainless steel mesh using a simple solvothermal method, and further modified with CuxO x O nanoparticles to form ZnIn2S4/CuxO 2 S 4 /Cu x O heterojunction photocatalyst via a wet chemistry approach. These photocatalysts were then utilized for photothermal catalytic CO2 2 reduction under full spectrum solar light. The experimental results demonstrated that the deposition of the photocatalyst on the flexible substrate effectively prevented the aggregation of ZnIn2S4 2 S 4 nanosheets. The incorporation of CuxO x O nanoparticles enhanced the specific surface area of the photocatalyst, and created a Zscheme heterojunction with ZnIn2S4 2 S 4 to improve the utilization efficiency of photogenerated electrons. It was noteworthy that the dark red CuxO x O exhibited a full spectrum response and excellent photothermal effect, thereby facilitating carrier migration and reducing CO2 2 catalytic reaction barriers. Consequently, the optimized ZnIn2S4/ 2 S 4 / CuxO x O exhibited significantly enhanced CO2 2 to CO yield of 1515.8 mu mol m-2h- h- 1 and CH4 4 yield of 1579.4 mu mol m2 h- 1 , which was about 7.5 and 7.6 times higher than those achieved by pure ZnIn2S4, 2 S 4 , respectively. Furthermore, this study provided detailed insights into the mechanism of photocatalytic CO2 2 reduction over composite material as well as valuable guidance for designing immobilized photocatalysts with high activity for CO2 2 reduction.
