Abstract:An integrated optical electric field (E-field) sensor based on a one-dimensional photonic crystal nanobeam cavity on a lithium niobite on insulator (LNOI) platform is reported here. It has a large dynamic range and extreme sensitivity. The dielectric resonant mode has a quality factor Q 10(5). The waveguide-coupled structure, only 25 mu m long, is beneficial for future on-chip integration. The use of TiO2 compensates for the thermo-optical effect of lithium niobite (LN), while the high dielectric constant of TiO2 influences the E-field distribution. A tri-layer TiO2/LNOI/TiO2 nanobeam structure is proposed to improve electro-optical modulation efficiency in LN. Detailed analysis of noise sources shows the theoretical minimum detectable E-field to be 0.15 V m(-1) with a dynamic range of 83 dB. The temperature-induced resonant wavelength variation is within 3 pm degrees C-1 in the range of -40 degrees C to 40 degrees C.

Abstract:In this work, a new TiO2 nanowire array based interferometric sensor had been developed .At first, TiO2 nanowire array films were prepared on the surface of conductive FTO glass through hydrothermal synthesis method .Then , a new type of interferometric film sensor based on wavelength modulation was constructed by u-tilizing the compound structure FTO glass with TiO 2 nanowire array thin film as the sensing chip and making use of the typical Kretschmann prism coupling structure .Finally, the response performance of the interfero-metric sensor to ambient refractive index was displayed by employing sodium chloride aqueous solution as the measured liquid media .The results show that the sensor has a preferable response to refractive index over the range of 1.333 5~1.360 4 .In the case of TM mode , there is a good linear relationship between reflectometric light intensity and NaCl concentration in the range of 0%to 3%and 3%to 15%quality percentage , respec-tively.For TE mode, within the range of 0 to 3%NaCl concentration, it shows a negative linear relationship between NaCl concentration and the absorption intensity while the resonant wavelength is basically unchanged ;within the range of 3 to 15%NaCl concentration , with the increase of NaCl concentration , the resonant wave-length is gradually red shifted and it exhibits a positive linear relationship between NaCl concentration and res -onant wavelength .

Abstract:A novel integrated opto-electric sensor for detecting two-dimensional (2-D) electric field (E-field) vector utilizing two inclined dipole antennas on one lithium niobate (LiNbO 3 ) substrate is proposed and demonstrated. Two tapered antennas with inclination angles of 45° and 135° are fabricated on different Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) optical waveguides so as to induce local E-fields within antenna gaps to modulate optical waves for separately measuring two E-field components. Experimental results show that polarization directions of the two inclined antennas are orthogonal. The minimum detectable E-field strength is 1.56 and 0.90 V/m for two MZIs, and the fabricated E-field sensor has a wideband frequency response from 1 to 6 GHz with ±8-dB fluctuations. The proposed integrated LiNbO 3 photonic E-field sensor has the potential of 2-D E-field vector measurement.

Abstract:A broadband integrated electric field sensor is proposed and demonstrated based on Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI). The sensor is realized by using an asymmetrical Mach-Zehnder interferometer configuration and an array of tapered dipole antennas. The fabricated sensor can achieve electric field sensing in the frequency range of 0.1 GHz to 26.5 GHz. For the electric field at 0.1 GHz, measurement is achieved in the amplitude range of 40 mV/m to 6 kV/m. The maximum measurable amplitude is calculated to be 28.6 kV/m. Hence, the theoretical dynamic range and the normalized sensitivity are 117 dB and 8.8 mV/m/Hz1/2, respectively.

Abstract:Electro-optic electric field sensors based on LiNbO3 are widely used for the measurement of electric fields or transient voltages. However, the working bias of the sensor is influenced by the temperature due to the thermo-optic effect of LiNbO3. An athermal electrooptic electric field sensor was demonstrated by coating a thin layer of TiO2 film which has a negative thermo-optic coefficient, on the common-path interferometer based sensor to compensate LiNbO3's positive thermo-optic coefficient. Both calculation and experimental studies were conducted. The experimental results reasonably agree well with the calculated values, and the results show the sensor coated with a 640 nm thick TiO2 film has a much smaller temperature dependence of 0.011 degrees/degrees C compared to the initial value of 0.1 degrees/degrees C.

Abstract:A lithium niobate (LiNbO 3 )-based integrated optical sensor with Mach-Zehnder optical waveguide interferometer and tapered antenna array was designed and fabricated for electric field detection. Experimental results reveal that this sensor has a frequency response deviation less than ±10 dB within the range of 10 kHz to 18 GHz, and its minimum detectable electric field intensity is 0.4 V/m. Moreover, a pulsed electric field with nanoseconds width and electric field intensity of 103 V/m have been detected by this sensor.

Abstract:In order to meet the requirements of wide-range and wide-area measurement of voltage in power systems, the integration and miniaturization of electric field sensors have become a major trend. Optical electric field sensors have the advantages of high sensitivity, high immunity and wide frequency response range. With the improvement of thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) etching technology, we propose a micro optical electric field sensor based on a TFLN waveguide structure with the advantages of small size, high linearity and large dynamic range. The sensor achieves intense electric field measurements of more than $100 \mathrm{kV} / \mathrm{m}$. The dynamic range can reach more than 86 dB.

Abstract:A reflective fiber temperature sensor system based on the ZnO thin film is proposed. The transmittance spectra and temperature dependent optical property of the sensing head with ZnO thin film is investigated theoretically and experimentally, and the temperature resolution of similar to 1 degrees C is obtained in the temperature region of 300-773 K. The temperature sensing system is only related to the wavelength shift of transmittance spectra, and has a high stability without depending on the incident light intensity. This research results also indicate a fiber optical sensor with a broad temperature measurement range (10-1800 K) can be gained as a promising temperature sensing device, and can be applied into some extremely environments, such as aircraft, nuclear power station and power transmission system, and so on. Abstract:We present an ambient refractive index (RI) insensitive temperature sensor based on a Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) ellipse stack major axis modulated photonic crystal (PC) nanobeam cavity (EPCNC). The PC nanobeam cavity is covered with SU-8 cladding to increase the temperature sensitivity by taking advantage of the relatively high thermooptic (TO) coefficient of SU-8 cladding. Three dimensional finite-difference time-domain (3D-FDTD) simulations are used for our analysis. The results show that the sensitivity of temperature sensing is-108.9pm/K. In particular, the proposed sensor not only achieves a competitive temperature sensitivity, but also eliminates the influence of ambient RI on sensing. Therefore, the proposed sensor is potentially a promising platform for future application of temperature sensing.

Abstract:An integrated optical waveguide E-field sensor with segmental electrodes using a proton-exchanged LiNbO(3) Mach-Zehnder (M-Z) interferometer has been designed and fabricated. The device consists of ten sections of electrode and its structure size is 60 x 6 x 0.5 mm. The experimental results show that the minimum detectable electric field is 60 mv/m with the bandwidth of 10 MHz similar to 3.6 GHz in the detecting condition for optical power, which has a signal-noise ratio of 5 dB.

Abstract:An integrated photonic electric field sensor comprised of a tapered antenna array and an optical waveguide asymmetric Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) has been fabricated and experimentally demonstrated. The tapered antenna array is fabricated across the MZI for a broadband receiving of the electromagnetic (EM) wave. The phase of the light beam traveling in the optical waveguide therefore changes based on the electro-optic (EO) effect of the LiNbO3 (LN) crystal, and so does the amplitude of the output end of the MZI. The packaged sensor is only $55times 15times 10$ mm3 in size. Experimental results reveal that the response deviation of the sensor is within ±10 dB from 100 kHz to 26.5 GHz. Moreover, the minimum detectable electric field of the sensor is 245 mV/m, and the intense nanosecond EM pulse (EMP) with peak amplitude of 25 kV/m has been detected in the time domain.

Abstract:Lithium niobate based (LiNbO3) integrated optical sensor with Mach-Zehnder optical waveguide interferometer and tapered antenna array was designed and fabricated for measuring pulsed electric field with nanosecond width. The fabricated sensor exhibits relatively flat frequency response with a variation not more than 4 dB from 10 kHz to 5 GHz and minimum detectable electric field intensity of 0.4 V/m. A 103 V/m pulsed electric field with nanosecond width was also measured by this integrated optical sensor, the experimental results exhibit the information of EMP can be detected and extracted by this integrated optical sensor.

Abstract:Intense E-field measurement is widely applied in high voltage and dielectric insulation research. In this paper, an integrated optical E-field sensor for time-domain measurement has been studied comprehensively, which is based on Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a mono-shielding electrode. Firstly, the principle and the key issues of the sensor design are presented. Secondly, the time-domain response characteristics are studied and the sensor can well follow waveforms with a rise time from nano-second to micro-second. Thirdly, the temperature stability of the sensor is analyzed, and the influence of temperature is quantified. Finally, the measurement of gas discharge field by the developed sensor is introduced, showing that the time-domain transient field measurement is an effective criterion for streamer inception. Abstract:In this article, a refractive index sensor based on Fano resonance, which is generated by the coupling of a metal–insulator–metal (MIM) waveguide structure and a toroidal cavity with a built-in elliptical ring (TCER) structure, is presented. The finite element method (FEM) was employed to analyze the propagation characteristics of the integral structure. The effects of refractive index and different geometric parameters of the structure on the sensing characteristics were evaluated. The maximum sensitivity was 2220 nm/RIU with a figure of merit (FOM) of 58.7, which is the best performance level that the designed structure could achieve. Moreover, due to its high sensitivity and simple structure, the refractive index sensor can be applied in the field of temperature detection, and its sensitivity is calculated to be 1.187 nm/°C.

Abstract:A lithium niobate optical waveguide-based integrated electro-optic (EO) electric field (E-field) sensor dedicated to the measurement of intense nanosecond transient electromagnetic pulse (EMP) signals has been developed and calibrated. The time domain calibration system for measurement of intense nanosecond EMP signals has been established. A pure optical bias phase angle control system based on wavelength tuning has been developed and implemented to ensure that the sensor has a linear transfer function. The fluctuations of the sensor static output optical power are < 0.1 dB with the proposed bias control system while >3 dB without bias control. The time domain characteristics of the detected pulsed E-fields have been compared with those of the input EMP signals. For the first type nanosecond level (ns-level) EMP signal, the relative errors of the detected E-fields on rise time, fall time, and pulse width are 0.38%, 0.69%, and 0.79%, respectively. Also, for the second type ns-level EMP signal, the relative errors of the measured E-fields on rise time, fall time, and pulse width are 0.40%, 0.31%, and 0.01%, respectively. All these results demonstrate that the developed integrated EO E-field sensing system has the potential to be used to accurately extract the information of transient E-fields.
