Abstract:Mangrove fungi, their ecological role in mangrove ecosystems, their bioproducts, and potential applications are reviewed in this article. Mangrove ecosystems can play an important role in beach protection, accretion promotion, and sheltering coastlines and creeks as barriers against devastating tropical storms and waves, seawater, and air pollution. The ecosystems are characterized by high average and constant temperatures, high salinity, strong winds, and anaerobic muddy soil. The mangrove ecosystems also provide the unique habitats for the colonization of fungi which can produce different kinds of enzymes for industrial uses, recycling of plants and animals in the ecosystems, and the degradation of pollutants. Many mangrove ecosystem-associated fungi also can produce exopolysaccharides, Ca<sup>2+</sup>-gluconic acid, polymalate, liamocin, polyunsaturated fatty acids, biofuels, xylitol, enzymes, and bioactive substances, which have many potential applications in the bioenergy, food, agricultural, and pharmaceutical industries. Therefore, mangrove ecosystems are rich bioresources for bioindustries and ecology. It is necessary to identify more mangrove fungi and genetically edit them to produce a distinct array of novel chemical entities, enzymes, and bioactive substances.

Abstract:Mangrove ecosystems are widely distributed in the intertidal zone of tropical and subtropical estuaries or coasts, containing abundant biological communities, for example, mangrove plants and diverse groups of microorganisms, featuring various bioactive secondary metabolites. We surveyed the literature from 2010 to 2022, resulting in a collection of 134 secondary metabolites, and classified them into two major families in terms of the biological sources and 15 subfamilies according to the chemical structures. To highlight the structural diversity and bioactivities of the mangrove ecosystem-associated secondary metabolites, we presented the chemical structures, bioactivities, biosynthesis, and chemical syntheses.

Abstract:Microorganisms play important roles in mangrove ecosystems. However, we know little about the ecological implications of mangrove microbiomes for high productivity and the efficient circulation of elements in mangrove ecosystems. Here, we focused on mangrove sediments located at the Yunxiao National Mangrove Reserve in southeast China, uncovering the mangrove microbiome using the 16S rRNA gene and shotgun metagenome sequencing approaches. Physicochemical assays characterized the Yunxiao mangrove sediments as carbon (C)-rich, sulfur (S)-rich, and nitrogen (N)-limited environment. Then phylogenetic analysis profiling a distinctive microbiome with an unexpected high frequency of Chloroflexi and Nitrospirae appeared to be an adaptive characteristic of microbial structure in S-rich habitat. Metagenome sequencing analysis revealed that the metabolic pathways of N and S cycling at the community-level were routed through ammonification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium for N conservation in this N-limited habitat, and dissimilatory sulfate reduction along with polysulfide formation for generating bioavailable S resource avoiding the biotoxicity of sulfide in mangrove sediments. In addition, methane metabolism acted as a bridge to connect C cycling to N and S cycling. Further identification of possible biogeochemical linkers suggested Syntrophobacter, Sulfurovum, Nitrospira, and Anaerolinea potentially drive the coupling of C, N, and S cycling. These results highlighting the adaptive routed metabolism flow, a previously undescribed property of mangrove sediment microbiome, appears to be a defining characteristic of this habitat and may significantly contribute to the high productivity of mangrove ecosystems, which could be used as indicators for the health and biodiversity of mangrove ecosystems.

Abstract:This review describes the present hot research areas of mangrove-associated fungi, including its biodiversity, ecological roles, novel metabolites productions and biotechnological potential. Mangrove-associated fungi were divided into saprophytic, parasitic and true symbiotic fungi based on its ecological roles. Saprophytic fungi are fundamental to decomposition and energy flow of mangrove, additionally, their potential toxicity also exists. Pathogenic fungi have significant effects on mangrove survival, growth, and fitness. Endophytic fungi, the most prolific source of diverse bioactive compounds found among that of mangrove-associated fungi, are found in most species of mangroves. Although a significant number of reports focused on the antimicrobial, insecticidal and other bioactive metabolites as well as many novel enzymes isolated from mangrove-associated fungi, and many of those metabolites from endophytic fungi are suspected to be of significant to mangrove, only few studies have provided convincing evidence for symbiotic producers in mangrove. Hence, this paper discusses the present progress of molecular methods used to correlate the ecological roles of endophytic fungi with their bioactive metabolites;, meanwhile, the potential of using metabolic engineering and post-genomic approaches to isolate more novel enzymes and bioactive compounds and to make their possible commercial application was also discussed.

Abstract:In recent years, mangrove endophytic fungi are increasingly attracting attention of the pharmaceutical community as they produce a wide variety of metabolites that are structurally unique and pharmacologically active. Previous chemical investigation of mangrove fungi resulted in the discovery of various bioactive secondary metabolites including terpenes, chromones, coumarins, polyketides, alkaloids and peptides with diverse structural features. The present report reviews the papers, which have appeared in the literature till now, concerning the isolation, structural elucidation, and biological activities of the secondary metabolites from mangrove endophytic fungi.

Abstract:Understanding the interactions between microorganisms, soil extracellular enzymes, and mangroves is crucial for conserving and restoring mangrove ecosystems. However, the unique environments associated with mangroves have resulted in a lack of pertinent data regarding the interactions between these components. Root, stem, leaf, and soil samples were collected at three distinct stages of mangrove succession. Stoichiometry was employed to analyze the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus contents of these samples and to quantify extracellular enzyme activities, microbial biomass, and various physicochemical factors in the soil. The results showed that the trends of C, N, and P in the mangrove plants were consistent. Microbial biomass carbon (MBC), microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN), and microbial biomass phosphorus (MBP) were the highest in the Kandelia obovate community. Catalase (CAT) and β-D-G showed the highest content in K. obovate and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza , whereas cellulase showed the opposite trend. Urease was least abundant in the K. obovate community, whereas neutral protease (NPR) and acid phosphatase (ACP) were most abundant. The overall soil environment in mangroves exhibited a state of N limitation, with varying degrees of limitation observed across different succession stages. The demand for P became more intense in the later stages of succession, particularly in the K. obovate and B. gymnorrhiza communities. In conjunction with correlation analysis, it indicated that the input of mangrove plant litter had a significant regulatory influence on the C, N, and P contents in the soil. There was a significant positive correlation between MBC, MBN, and MBP, indicating synergistic effects of C, N, and P on soil microorganisms. Therefore, evaluating the nutrient ratios and sufficiency of mangroves allowed us to comprehensively understand the present environmental conditions. This study aims to develop sustainable management strategies for the conservation and restoration of mangroves.

Abstract:Mangroves are typically found in tropical coastal areas, and these ecosystems face deterioration and loss due to threats from climate and human factors. In this study, sediment cores were collected from human-planted mangroves in sub-tropical Ximen Island, China, and were determined for sedimentary phosphorus (P) species. The objective was to investigate the ability of mangroves planted in a zone bordering their temperature limit to preserve and regulate P. Our results showed that bioavailable P (BAP), which includes exchangeable-P (Ex-P), iron-bound P (Fe-P), and organic P (OP), accounted for approximately 64% of total P (TP). Apatite P (Ca-P), which accounted for 24% of TP, most likely originated from aquaculture activities surrounding the island. The vertical distribution of sedimentary P species along the sediment cores showed a rather constant trend along the salt marsh stand but considerable fluctuations for the mangroves and bare mudflat. These results indicate that mangroves accumulated P when there was a high P discharge event, and that this P was eventually released during organic matter decomposition and contributed to Ca-P formation. Nevertheless, old and young mangroves accumulated higher sedimentary P species, OP, and BAP compared to the salt marsh stand and bare mudflat areas. This study showed the potential of mangroves planted outside their suitable climate zone to preserve and regulate P.

Abstract:Mangroves are distinguished as a unique ecotone, characterized by their specialized habitat and extreme environmental conditions, including high salinity, tidal fluctuations, elevated temperatures, low oxygen levels, and waterlogging. While these stressors impose numerous challenges on mangroves, the plants have evolved adaptive mechanisms to cope with such harsh conditions. Crucially, the root-associated microbial community, particularly plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB), plays an essential role in aiding mangrove plants to withstand these adverse conditions, highlighting the symbiotic relationship vital for mangrove resilience. The study aims to explore the root-associated PGPB in mangrove ecosystems, focusing on their roles and potential biotechnological applications. It has been found that these diverse PGPB, isolated from mangroves, exhibited plant growth-promoting properties, including nitrogen fixation, solubilization of phosphorus and potassium, and the production of beneficial compounds such as phytohormones, exopolysaccharides, and volatile organic compounds. These traits of PGPB contribute not only to plant growth and development but also to resilience against various stresses, especially salinity. They aid in maintaining nutrient and ionic balance, modulating hormonal levels, providing osmoprotection, mitigating oxidative stress, and enhancing resistance to pathogens within the mangrove ecosystem. Moreover, the study highlights the promising biotechnological applications of these microbes in promoting sustainable agricultural practices in saline environments, enhancing environmental remediation efforts, and supporting mangrove reforestation initiatives. In conclusion, leveraging the symbiotic relationships between mangrove plants and their root-associated PGPB offers innovative, sustainable solutions to contemporary environmental challenges, paving the way for enhanced ecosystem resilience and productivity.

Abstract:Mangrove forests are crucial in absorbing, storing, and purifying pollutants while maintaining ecological balance. A study was conducted in 2020 to investigate the biogeochemical processes of seawater and sedimentary environmental factors in the Qi'ao Island mangrove wetland. The study comprised two survey sections and ten survey stations within the mangrove forest and 16 large-scale survey stations in the adjacent sea area. During ebb tides, the mean concentrations of inorganic nitrogen and phosphate in Section D1 of the mangrove forest were 0.63 mg/L and 0.003 mg/L, respectively. These levels were significantly lower than the results observed in the adjacent sea area and Section D2 of the mangrove forest during flood tides. The mangrove forest efficiently absorbed and consumed nutrients, with the nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratio of consumed nutrients being notably higher than that typically utilized by plants during growth. We identified various biogeochemical processes, including nitrogen fixation, mineralization, nitrification, and denitrification, occurring within the mangrove forest. Seawater measurements in Section D1 during ebb tides showed the mean pH of 7.58 and dissolved oxygen levels of 4.52 mg/L, resulting in a dissolved oxygen saturation level of only 57.0 %. The low dissolved oxygen levels were attributed to organic matter degradation in the forest. Consequently, the longer the water retention time, the more obvious the trend of hypoxia and acidification was observed. In the adjacent sea area, the sedimentary environment was deemed healthy, with pollutants primarily originating from runoff and ship discharge from waterways and ports. However, within the mangrove forest, the sediments exhibited higher enrichment factors for organic carbon and sulfide, indicating significant pollution compared to the adjacent sea area. The sediments were conducive to the accumulation and burial of total Hg, Zn, and Cu, while other heavy metals did not show prominent deposition and enrichment. Notably, the enrichment factor of oils was as high as 4.37, leading to the formation of an oil pollution zone at the forest edge, and the enrichment of pollutants in sediment may inhibit the growth and expansion of mangroves. Overall, this study shed light on the occurrence of seawater acidification, hypoxia, and the behavior of sediment pollutants within the mangrove forest. The findings provide valuable insights to support efforts aimed at promoting and maintaining the ecosystem health of mangrove forests.

Abstract:Mangroves are woody plants found growing at transition zones between land and sea in tropic and sub-tropical regions. They arehighly adapted morphologically and physiologically to survive in extreme environments. Mangroves are found worldwide in theirdistribution, with 110 species that belong to 20 different families. In India, mangrove forests are mostly found on the Andaman andNicobar Islands and the West and East Coast. Mangroves have enormous ecological, commercial and biological significance. They arealso regarded as hotspots for microbes because of their rich microbial diversity. Various types of microorganisms like bacteria, fungi,microalgae and macroalgae are abundant in mangrove ecosystems. More recently, fungal endophytes associated with mangroveshave added to their microbial diversity. Many mangrove plants are used as ethno-medicine in traditional health care. Mangroves arealso used as antimicrobial and antiviral agents. Fungal endophytes -colonizing medicinal plants are reported to produce importantbioactive metabolites. These endophytes are believed to produce same and more biologically active metabolites as compared to theirrespective hosts. Many fungal endophytes isolated from mangrove species have produced some important biological active metaboliteslike triterpenes, indole triterpenes, isocoumarin and marinamide. Therefore, the study of fungal endophytes associated with medicinalmangroves may give rise to important endophytic strains that might produce novel and new bioactive metabolites of pharmaceutical,industrial and agricultural importance. Due to the alarming rate of depletion of mangrove genetic resources across the world, it is highlyneeded to explore fungal endophytes associated with mangroves for the inventorisation of new metabolites.

Abstract:Abstract The microphytobenthos (MPB) are known to play important ecological roles in estuarine ecosystems. While tidal flat MPB are widely studied, mangrove MPB are often overlooked due to the common belief that the light-limited environment under the mangrove canopy is not conducive to MPB growth. We assessed the biomass and community characteristics of the MPB in two contrasting mangrove forests (silty substrate and brackish influence versus sandy substrate and oceanic influence), their seasonal photosynthetic performance, as well as their role in mediating porewater carbon flux. Biomass measured as chlorophyll a concentration indicated that MPB abundance was equal, if not higher, in mangroves than on tidal flats. While mangrove sediments fostered an equally rich assemblage of MPB (estimated 23 to 45 genera) as the adjacent tidal flat, the MPB genus composition was different across all habitats, sites, and seasons, indicating the strong environmental influence on MPB assemblages. This study identified porewater salinity, temperature, and pH, as well as irradiance level and surface soil temperature to be accountable for 23.5% of this variation. MPB in all sampling locations were dominated by pennate diatoms, while cyanobacteria were common in the estuarine (as opposed to oceanic) site. Compared to tidal flat MPB, mangrove MPB exhibited photosynthetic performance characteristic of lower light acclimation. A mesocosm experiment using enriched stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen indicated that a tight coupling exists between mangrove-derived carbon and MPB. Mangrove MPB are abundant and different from tidal flat MPB, and are functional photosynthetic entities with a regulatory role in nutrient cycling in mangrove ecosystems.

Abstract:The human electroretinogram (ERG) was elicited by an abrupt replacement of a chromatic adaptation stimulus with a long duration test stimulus. It was found that the relative spectral sensitivity of the ERG was strongly dependent upon the color and luminance of the adaptation stimulus with adaptation to a particular color lowering sensitivity to the same part of the spectrum. Clear-cut responses were produced by test luminances below an adaptation luminance only when the two were far apart in the spectrum. Analysis of the data gave definite evidence for two spectral processes with maxima near 500 and 620 mμ. There was evidence for other possible processes in the green and blue but their maxima were not well defined.

Abstract:Abstract Mangrove forests are widely distributed in Asia, America, and Africa. These salt-tolerant bushes or trees grow at the intersection of fresh and saline waters in tidal lagoons, estuaries, and deltas creating rich ecosystems. They are used by communities for wood, and fish and shellfish harvesting, and they play an important role in soil stabilization and wave and flood modification by absorbing storm surges protecting coastal communities. Mangroves are threatened by human activities that include discharge of untreated wastewater that creates hypoxic conditions; structures, which interfere with material deposition and current circulation; and ship and boat movement, which create wake waves, or introduce ballast water. The highly salt tolerant species of Avicennia marina covers about 155 km 2 of the Abu Dhabi shoreline. Mangroves’ existence in some locations there is endangered by the intense coastal development and engineered shoreline modification taking place. Cement factories with heavy metal and other particle sea deposition; marinas, ports, canals, and seawalls constructed to provide residential sea views, and motorized boats modify hydrodynamic conditions and affect the settling of particles directing them seaward. Finally, the dredging that accompanies construction removes benthic communities and material modifying the seabed and may create conditions adverse to mangrove survival.

Abstract:Mangrove and salt marsh ecosystems are one of the most productive ecosystems in terrestrial ecosystems, playing an important role in global carbon (C) cycling. The anaerobic condition in coastal wetland usually impedes the decomposition of soil organic carbon (SOC). However, the intrinsic stabilization mechanisms of SOC other than environmental factors are poorly understood in coastal wetland. In this paper, we investigated the relative contribution of mineral association and chemical compounds in maintaining the stabilization of SOC in the mangrove/salt marsh ecotone, and how the microbial community is involved in the stabilization. From NMR spectroscopy, we found that the SOC molecular structure of Spartina. alterniflora soils is simpler than that in mangrove forest, indicating an increased SOC decomposition with invasion of S. alterniflora. On the contrary, the molecular structure of SOC in mangrove forest was dominated by recalcitrant aromatic C. Meanwhile, the larger fractions of silt/clay content in S. alterniflora and the transitional community were corresponding to higher percentage of mineral organic carbon (MOC), which suggest that the SOC in S. alterniflora vegetated soil was mainly protected by the mineral association. The transitional community contained highest MOC content probably due to both physical protection of mineral association and recalcitrant C input from adjacent mangroves. We also found that the fraction of SOC and its chemical structure of functional groups were associated with microbial communities. This study revealed the occurrence of different SOC stabilization mechanisms between mangroves and salt marshes. The knowledge gained may help to make predictions about future SOC dynamics as the different stabilization processes may response to climate change or human activities differently.

Abstract:Mangrove ecosystems in the intertidal zone are continually affected by tidal inundation, but the impact of tidal-driven nutrient inputs upon bacterial communities and carbon metabolic features in mangrove surface sediments remains underexplored, and the differences in such impacts across backgrounds are not known. Here, two mangrove habitats with contrasting nutrient backgrounds in Shenzhen Bay and Daya Bay in Shenzhen City, China, respectively, were studied to investigate the effects of varying tidal nutrient inputs (especially dissolved inorganic nitrogen and PO43--P) on bacterial community composition and functioning in sediment via field sampling, 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing, and the quantitative potential of microbial element cycling. Results showed that tidal input increased Shenzhen Bay mangrove's eutrophication level whereas it maintained the Daya Bay mangrove's relatively oligotrophic status. Dissolved inorganic nitrogen and PO43--P levels in Shenzhen Bay were respectively 12.6-39.6 and 7.3-29.1 times higher than those in Daya Bay (p < 0.05). In terms of microbial features, Desulfobacteraceae was the dominant family in Shenzhen Bay, while the Anaerolineaceae family dominated in Daya Bay. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed more interconnected and complex microbial networks in Shenzhen Bay. The quantitative gene-chip analysis uncovered more carbon-related functional genes (including carbon degradation and fixation) enriched in Shenzhen Bay's sediment microbial communities than Daya Bay's. Partial least squares path modeling indicated that tidal behavior directly affected mangrove sediments' physicochemical characteristics, with cascading effects shaping microbial diversity and C-cycling function. Altogether, these findings demonstrate that how tides influence the microbial carbon cycle in mangrove sediments is co-correlated with the concentration of nutrient inputs and background status of sediment. This work offers an insightful lens for better understanding bacterial community structure and carbon metabolic features in mangrove sediments under their tidal influences. It provides a theoretical basis to better evaluate and protect mangroves in the context of global change.
