Abstract:Spartina alterniflora invasion has initiated one of the greatest changes to occur in coastal wetlands in China, and ecological replacement using mangrove species such as Kandelia obovata is an effective method for controlling these invasions. The effects of S. alterniflora invasions and subsequent K. obovata restorations on soil microbial community structures in different seasons are still not fully understood. In this study, soil samples were collected from six vegetation types (unvegetated mudflat, invasive S. alterniflora stands, one-/eight-/ten-year K. obovata restoration areas, and native mature K. obovata forests) in summer and winter. The variations in the soil microbial community structure between the vegetation types across two seasons were then characterized based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and the physicochemical properties that shaped the microbial communities were also determined. The invasion and restoration processes significantly influenced microbial community diversity, composition, and putative functions in different seasonal patterns. Microbial communities from a ten-year restoration area and a native mature K. obovata area shared more similarities than other areas. In both seasons, the key environmental factors driving microbial community included total carbon and nitrogen content, the ratio of carbon to nitrogen, and the soil pH. In addition, total sulfur and total phosphorus contents significantly contributed to structuring microbial communities in summer and winter, respectively. This study provides insights into microbial diversity, composition, and functional profiles in association with physicochemical impacts, with the aim of understanding microbial ecological functions during the invasion and restoration processes in wetland ecosystems.

Abstract:The community structure and diet of benthic macrofauna in a Spartina alterniflora wetland and restored native Kandelia obovata mangrove forests of different ages were compared in Zhangjiangkou estuary, China. The biodiversity and total density of benthic macrofauna did not change after the restoration of Spartina wetlands with native mangrove species. However, the total biomass decreased significantly approximately half a year after physical treatments. This decrease in total biomass resulted from a change in the dominant gastropod from the larger Cerithidea djariensis to the smaller Assimine abrevicula. Gastropod and crab species in the Spartina wetland derived more than 80 % of their organic carbon from Spartina. Preliminary physical treatment and plantings of K. obovata did not change the diets of benthic macrofauna during year one of the restoration, but δ13C values in gastropod and crab species collected in both 10- and 40-year K. obovata forests were more depleted than those measured in the Spartina wetland, indicating a change in the diet of benthic macrofauna from homogenous to heterogeneous. These results suggest that biological replacement using native mangrove species can not only successfully control the spread of invasive Spartina, but also restore the diverse food web typical of a mature mangrove ecosystem.
Effects of short-term invasion of Spartina alterniflora and the subsequent restoration of native mangroves on the soil organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus stock.

Abstract:The exotic cordgrass Spartina alterniflora has severely invaded the mangrove wetlands in southern China and ecological restoration using native mangroves was conducted in an attempt to control this invasive species. In this study, the contents and pools of soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) were quantified to investigate the invasive effects of S. alterniflora and then to evaluate whether the ecological restoration of native mangrove could reverse those effects. S. alterniflora only showed significantly higher organic carbon content in the surface 0-10 cm of soil than in the uninvaded mudflat. The high δ13C values in the surface soil of the invaded habitat demonstrated that S. alterniflora contributed 42.6-62.2% of the organic carbon. The SOC for invasive S. alterniflora and newly restored mangroves (4 years and 14 years) was not enhanced in comparison to the unvegetated mudflat. S. alterniflora significantly increased the surface soil TN content, but decreased the available phosphorus content and TP density. The TN densities increased gradually with the mangrove restoration, while the TP densities were only slightly influenced. The results suggested that short-term invasion of S. alterniflora and subsequent mangrove restoration did not alter SOC or TN pool sizes, but S. alterniflora was shown to affect the potential carbon storage capacity produced by the mangroves in the Zhangjiang Estuary.

Abstract:Coastal wetlands are the most productive ecosystems worldwide and can provide important ecosystem services, yet the characteristics of microbial community within these systems remain poorly understood. Microbial community of salt marsh vegetation and the associated soil physio-chemical properties were investigated in this study. Three typical Suaeda australis, Phragmites australis, Spartina alterniflora wetlands, and non-vegetated bare mudflats in the Zhoushan Islands were studied to advance the understanding of the characteristics of soil bacterial communities in coastal wetlands. Results showed that the bare mudflats exhibited high pH value and soil moisture content compared with the vegetated samples. In different vegetation types, the organic matter content, total nitrogen, and total potassium content decreased in the order: S. alterniflora wetland > P. australis wetland > S. australis wetland, and there was no obvious difference in total phosphorous content. The halophytes could decrease soil salinity compared with bare mudflats. Proteobacteria, Nitrospinae, Bacteroidetes, Acidobacteria, and Nitrospirae were the predominant level across all samples. Functional prediction showed that SPA-covered soil might play vital roles in sulphur cycling, while SUA and PHR covered soils were involved in nitrogen cycling. This study could provide the first insight into the microbial community of this study area and contribute to a better understanding of vegetation microbiota and bioremediation in coastal wetland ecosystem.
Benthic bacterial communities and bacteria-environment interactions after Kandelia obovata introduction and Spartina alterniflora invasion in Yueqing Bay, China

Abstract:Kandelia obovata and Spartina alterniflora can significantly affect sediment properties and benthic bacterial communities. However, little is known about the different impacts of K. obovata introduction and S. alterniflora invasion on local ecosystems. In this study, sediment properties and bacterial communities were determined at different depths (0-30, 30-60, 60-90 cm) in mudflat, K. obovata and S. alterniflora habitats in Yueqing Bay, Zhejiang Province, China. The results showed that K. obovata sediments had higher soil organic carbon contents and exhibited higher heavy metals, of which Cu posed a moderate contamination according to the geoaccumulation index. K. obovata habitats also presented more distinct bacterial communities, with Gemmatimonadetes abundant and acting as keystone connectors. The shift in bacterial communities after K. obovata introduction was mainly caused by changes in sediment organic carbon, Cd and Zn concentrations. S. alterniflora habitats had higher proportions of Anaerolineae and Sulfurovum and some bacteria that are beneficial to plant growth, including Cyanobacteria and Erythrobacter. Bacteria-environment interactions showed that heavy metals formed a more complex and closer co-occurrence network with Proteobacteria and Gemmatimonadetes after K. obovata introduction, while S. alterniflora invasion simplified sediment bacterial co-occurrence networks and bacteria-environment interactions in native ecosystems. Our results revealed that the impacts of S. alterniflora invasion on local ecosystems were outweighed by K. obovata introduction in Yueqing Bay. Abstract:Non-native plants can significantly affect biodiversity and ecological functions of local ecosystems. The effects of Kandelia obovata introduction and Spartina alterniflora invasion on benthic bacterial communities, predicted ecological functions and interactions between macrobenthos and microorganisms were studied. High-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene was used to investigate the bacterial communities in sediments covered by S. alterniflora and K. obovata at different stand ages. Bacterial communities showed obvious spatial variation. With increasing in planting age, K. obovate sediments were occupied by higher proportions of bacteria involved in degradation of organic carbon compounds, including various sulfate reduction bacteria, Bacteroidetes, Alphaproteobacteria, and pathogenic bacteria Vibrio, while the relative abundances of Actinomatinales and Sulfurovum were more abundant in younger K. obovate sites. Compared to adjacent mudflat, higher abundances of sulfate reduction bacteria were observed in S. alterniflora. This study indicated that K. obovata introduction had greater effects on bacterial communities, and sediment pH, grain size, soil organic carbon, total nitrogen and total phosphorus contents were main environmental factors affecting variation in bacterial communities. Tax4fun analysis further suggested that higher potentials of nitrogen fixation and dissimilatory sulfate reduction were observed after K. obovata restoration and S. alterniflora invasion. There were significant correlations between macrobenthos and bacterial communities, especially variations in relative abundance of infaunas and herbivores after K. obovata introduction and S. alterniflora invasion, which significantly affected bacterial communities and potentials involved in nitrogen cycling. The present study provided valuable information in scientific assessing the impacts of non-native plant disturbance on local ecosystems.

Abstract:It has been reported that the invasion of Spartina alterniflora changed the soil microbial community in the mangrove ecosystem in China, especially the bacterial community, although the response of soil fungal communities and soil microbial ecological functions to the invasion of Spartina alterniflora remains unclear. In this study, we selected three different communities (i.e., Spartina alterniflora community (SC), Spartina alterniflora–mangrove mixed community (TC), and mangrove community (MC)) in the Zhangjiangkou Mangrove Nature Reserve in China. High-throughput sequencing technology was used to analyze the impact of Spartina alterniflora invasion on mangrove soil microbial communities. Our results indicate that the invasion of Spartina alterniflora does not cause significant changes in microbial diversity, but it can alter the community structure of soil bacteria. The results of the LEfSe (LDA Effect Size) analysis show that the relative abundance of some bacterial taxa is not significantly different between the MC and SC communities, but different changes have occurred during the invasion process (i.e., TC community). Different from the results of the bacterial community, the invasion of Spartina alterniflora only cause a significant increase in few fungal taxa during the invasion process, and these taxa are at some lower levels (such as family, genus, and species) and classified into the phylum Ascomycota. Although the invasion of Spartina alterniflora changes the taxa with certain ecological functions, it may not change the potential ecological functions of soil microorganisms (i.e., the potential metabolic pathways of bacteria, nutritional patterns, and fungal associations). In general, the invasion of Spartina alterniflora changes the community structure of soil microorganisms, but it may not affect the potential ecological functions of soil microorganisms.

Abstract:Soil microbes are important for biogeochemical cycles of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur in wetland ecosystems. There is growing evidence that microorganisms are important for plant invasion. We explored the functional role of microorganisms during the invasion of Spartina alterniflora in coastal areas of China. The exotic plant Spartina alterniflora is expanding rapidly along China's coast regions, seriously threatening native ecosystems. Soil bacteria are important for biogeochemical cycles, including those of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur, in wetland ecosystems. There is growing evidence that microorganisms are important in case of plant invasion. In the present study, we studied the interlacing area of S. alterniflora and Suaeda heteroptera, selected soil of invaded and non‐invaded regions and explored the effect of the composition and diversity of bacterial communities in coastal wetlands. The bacterial community composition of invasive and noninvasive areas was subjected to high‐throughput sequencing. In the five areas tested, the main bacterial phyla were Proteobacteria, Bacteroides, and Acidobacteria; the richness of the bacterial community in the soil increased after S. alterniflora invasion, most changes occurred at the genus level. The relative abundances of Desulfobulbus and Sulfurovum were higher in invasive areas than in noninvaded areas. PCA, RDA, and LEfSe analyses found that the S. alterniflora invasion significantly influenced the bacterial community and physicochemical properties of wetland soil. In conclusion, soil microbial community composition was tightly associated with S. alterniflora invasion. This study provide an important scientific basis for further research on the invasion mechanism of S. alterniflora.

Abstract:1. Ecological replacement using native mangrove species combined with physical treatments has become an effective method in controlling the spread of invasive cordgrass Spartina alterniflora. To re-establish ecosystem functions, trophic interactions between macrofauna and their potential food resources must be considered during the restoration process. 2. Here, we examined the changes in the diets of macrofauna in three restored mangrove ecosystems with different invasion histories following the removal of S.alterniflora in southern China. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios for dominant macrofauna, as well as their potential food sources, were analysed. The relative contributions of the different carbon sources to the diets of benthic macrofauna and isotopic niche width, including convex hull areas and standard ellipse areas of the macrofaunal community, were then calculated and compared among sampling sites in each region. 3. Our results indicated that Spartina-derived detritus contributed to >80% of the organic carbon sources of dominant macrofauna in the S.alterniflora communities in all three regions. Spartina alterniflora communities had lower convex hull areas and standard ellipse areas than natural mangrove forests, indicating significant resource competition among different consumer populations. Replacing S.alterniflora with the native mangrove species Kandelia obovata could reverse the diets of these macrofaunal species, resulting in a shift from homogeneous Spartina-dominated diets to more heterogeneous algae-based diets. It could take several decades to restore food web interactions to a pre-impacted state. Even the diets of macrofauna in mature mangrove (>40years) remained affected by the Spartina-derived organic matter. 4. Synthesis and applications. Our study reveals that the ecological replacement of invasive Spartina alterniflora using native mangrove species could restore food web function gradually. However, this removal and replacement approach is a long process and requires significant manpower and resources. Furthermore, the native ecosystem will continue to be influenced by the cordgrass as long as large areas of wetland nearby are occupied by S.alterniflora. Consequently, preventing the colonization of S.alterniflora should be a priority for coastal ecosystem management in southern China.
Stocks and Sources of Soil Carbon and Nitrogen in Non-Native Kandelia Obovata Afforestation and Spartina Alterniflora Invasion: A Case Study on Northern Margin Mangroves in the Subtropical Coastal Wetlands of China

Abstract:For decades in China, carbon neutrality policies have spurred the establishment of northern margin mangroves as artificial blue carbon ecosystems. However, there has been limited research on the impact of plantation and invasion on the stocks and sources of soil carbon and nitrogen in rehabilitated coastal wetlands. Non-native Kandelia obovata afforestation began on Ximen Island, Zhejiang, China, where Spartina alterniflora invasion had also occurred decades ago. Soil cores were collected from both mangrove and salt marsh habitats with depths from 0 to 50 cm and were analyzed for total carbon (TC), soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), and the isotope of carbon and nitrogen in sediments. The results indicated that there were no significant differences in the TC, SOC, and C/N ratio between the K. obovata and the S. alterniflora, but there were significant differences in TN, isotope δ13C, and δ15N. The SOC content of both ecosystems in the 0–20 cm layer was significantly higher than that in the 30–50 cm layer. Our study has shown that the main sources of carbon and nitrogen for mangroves and salt marshes are different, especially under the impact of external factors, such as tidal waves and aquaculture. These findings provide insight into the ecological functioning of subtropical coastal wetlands and an understanding of the biogeochemical cycles of northern margin mangrove ecosystems.

Abstract:Coastal wetlands play a critical role in global carbon (C) cycling while they are frequently challenged by exotic plant invasion. Microbial residues are increasingly recognized as the key constituent of stable soil organic C (SOC) but their responses to plant invasion in coastal wetlands remain largely unknown. Here, we investigated the effect of Spartina alterniflora invasion on microbial residues and their contribution to SOC in coastal wetland ecosystems with distinct native species ( Phragmites australi s (marsh), Kandelia candel or Avicennia marina ). S. alterniflora invasion differentially altered microbial residue C accumulation in three coastal wetlands. Overall, the invasion of S. alterniflora significantly increased microbial residue C accumulation (17.8%) in marsh with native P. australis , while it showed negative or minor impacts on mangroves with K. candel and A. marine communities, despite nuanced site-specific differences. The divergent responses of microbial residues could be related to changes in edaphic conditions and plant inputs along with plant invasion process. Invasion of mangrove and marsh communities by S. alterniflora triggered divergent fungal and bacterial residue responses, leading to contrasting fungal to bacterial C ratios in invaded marsh and mangrove wetlands. The proportion of microbial residues in SOC pool was enhanced to some extent, with an increase by 14.4%, 33.0% and 1.9% in P. australis , K. candel and A. marine wetlands, respectively, despite inconsistent variations in total SOC with S. alterniflora invasion. This has an implication for an elevated preservation of microbial residue C relative to the other organic C fractions in the invaded coastal wetlands. These findings highlight the importance of anabolic microbial C sequestration process for the maintenance of wetland soil C, which may impact C cycling and balance in coastal wetland ecosystem subjected to S. alterniflora invasion. Our work provides new insights to capture the properties and mechanisms of microbial control over C sequestration as well as SOC source configuration in coastal wetlands undergoing S. alterniflora invasion.

Abstract:Over the last decades, invasion by the exotic cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) has become one of the most serious and challenging environmental issues threatening mangrove wetland ecosystems in China. The purpose of the study was to investigate the microeukaryotic diversity and community composition after S. alterniflora invasion in a mangrove nature reserve and to elucidate the factors that are driving succession or shifts in microeukaryotic communities. In this study, the spatiotemporal distributions of microeukaryotic communities in coastal wetland sediments of the Jiulong River Estuary, southeast China were investigated. The microeukaryotic communities from the wetland were distributed within six major groups (i.e. Alveolata, Stramenopiles, Rhizaria, Viridiplantae, Fungi and Metazoa). Our results indicated that vegetation changes were the primary factor driving the shift in microeukaryotic community composition, rather than seasonal separation. Total nitrogen (TN) and oxidized nitrogen (nitrite and nitrate) were significant environmental factors in explaining the largest portion of the variation in microeukaryotic composition. The exotic cordgrass invasions affected the microeukaryotic communities and played a key role in shaping community structure. It appears that microeukaryotic community could be used as a bioindicator in assessing the recovery process of mangrove ecosystems.

Abstract:A theoretical study has been carried out to evaluate key parameters of InxGa1-xAs material at energies below the direct band edge. The spectral dependence of refractive index, absorption coefficient, and photoelastic constants are evaluated for the whole composition range in InxGa1-xAs material on the basis of simplified models of the interband transitions. The results obtained from the present study are compared with the experimental results and found to be in good agreement. We have also evaluated refractive-index steps between InxGa1-xAs and GaAs materials for variety of waveguiding device applications.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate soil denitrifying bacterial and fungal community structures and potential denitrification rates in the coastal marsh soils of Eastern China across Spartina alterniflora invasive gradients (i.e. native (Nat), native-Spartina coexisted (Ecot) and Spartina-dominated (Mono) vegetations, respectively). Plant biomass and soil chemical properties were also analyzed to understand the patterns of spatial variability of structure and function of denitrifier communities across the studied gradients. Results indicated that total, bacterial and fungal potential denitrification rates (TDR, BDR and FDR) were 5.5, 3.5 and 1.5 times greater respectively in the Mono soil than in the Nat soil. Denitrifying bacterial richness, evenness and alpha-diversity were 2.0, 1.3 and 1.3 times greater in the Mono soil than those in the Nat soil, while only the richness among denitrifying fungal community parameters was 1.4 times greater in the Mono soil than that in the Nat soil. Plant biomass, soil organic carbon and pH were the most important factors influencing denitrifying bacterial and fungal community structures and functions. Denitrifying bacterial community composition was related closely to BDR and TDR, while denitrifying fungal community composition was not related to FDR and TDR, thus showing that the denitrifying bacterial community is a better predictor of denitrification function following Spartina invasion.

We investigated soil microbial community structure and microbial respiration following Spartina alterniflora invasion in a chronosequence of 6-, 10-, 17-, and 20-year-old by comparing with bare flat in a coastal wetland of China. S. alterniflora invasion significantly increased soil moisture and salinity, the concentrations of soil water-soluble organic carbon and microbial biomass carbon (MBC), the quantities of total and various types of phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs), the fungal: bacterial PLFAs ratio and cumulative microbial respiration compared with bare flat. The highest MBC, gram-negative bacterial and saturated straight-chain PLFAs were found in 10-year-old S. alterniflora soil, while the greatest total PLFAs, bacterial and gram-positive bacterial PLFAs were found in 10- and 17-year-old S. alterniflora soils. The monounsaturated: branched PLFAs ratio declined, and cumulative microbial respiration on a per-unit-PLFAs increased following S. alterniflora invasion in the chronosequence. Our results suggest that S. alterniflora invasion significantly increased the biomass of soil various microbial groups and microbial respiration compared to bare flat soil by increasing soil available substrate, and modifying soil physiochemical properties. Soil microbial community reached the most enriched condition in the 10-year-old S. alterniflora community.

Abstract:As a typical invasive species, Spartina alterniflora is widely recognized as one of the primary threats to biodiversity in various habitats, including wetlands. Although the invasion by S. alterniflora has been managed in multiple ways, it may reappear after treatment. How S. alterniflora affects the soil microbial community in coastal wetlands during its regeneration process has not yet been clarified. Here, rhizosphere soil samples (RSPs) and bulk soil samples (SSPs) were collected in the S. alterniflora community and a high-throughput sequencing method was conducted to analyze the composition and diversity of soil microorganisms. Meanwhile, we also obtain the soil physicochemical properties. In the present study, there was no significant difference in the alpha diversity of both bacterial and fungal communities in the SSP and RSP groups. The PCoA (principal coordinate analysis) also showed that the microbial community structure did not differ significantly between the SSP and RSP groups. The results showed that except for pH, the total sulfur (TS) content, total nitrogen (TN) content, and electrical conductivity (EC) did not differ significantly (p > 0.05) between the SSP and RSP groups. The composition of the bacterial and fungal community in the rhizosphere of S. alterniflora was similar to that found in the surrounding soils. The top two dominant bacterial phyla were Proteobacteria and Desulfobacterota in the present study. Venn diagram results also support this view; most OTUs belong to the common OTUs of the two groups, and the proportion of unique OTUs is relatively small. The LEfSe (LDA effect size) analysis showed that Campylobacterota (at the phylum level) and Sulfurimonas (at the genus level) significantly increased in the RSP group, implying that the increased Sulfurimonas might play an essential role in the invasion by S. alterniflora during the under-water period. Overall, these results suggest that the bacterial and fungal communities were not significantly affected by the S. alterniflora invasion due to the short invasion time.

Abstract:Aims The effects of invasive plants on soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling are widely documented, while the mechanisms of their influences on the microbial ecology of soil remain unknown. Therefore, the objective of this study was to explore variations in soil bacterial communities following plant invasion, and the mechanisms that drive these changes. Methods An invasive perennial herb, Spartina alterniflora Loisel., was examined via 16S rRNA genetic sequencing analyses, to assess the impacts of plant invasion on soil bacterial communities compared to bare flat and native Suaeda salsa (L.) Pall., Scirpus mariqueter Tang et Wang, and Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. communities in the coastal zone of China. Results S. alterniflora invasion significantly increased soil bacterial abundance, species richness, and diversity for soil bacterial communities compared with native communities. S. alterniflora soil revealed a unique bacterial community composition, and possessed the highest relative abundance of chemo-lithoautotrophic bacteria, photoautotrophic bacteria (e.g., Chloroflexi, and Anaerolineae), and saprophytic and copiotrophic bacteria (e.g., Bacteroidetes) among the plant communities. Conclusions Our results demonstrated that invasive S. alterniflora significantly altered soil bacterial abundance, diversity, and community composition through increases in nutrient substrate levels and altering soil physiochemical properties. Subsequently, the modification of soil bacterial communities, especially increased relative abundances of Chloroflexi, Anaerolineae, and Bacteroidetes following S. alterniflora invasion can enhance the degradation of recalcitrant S. alterniflora materials, while inducing the accumulation of soil organic C and N. These changes further potentially impacted ecosystem C and N cycles in the coastal zone of China.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Mangrove ecosystems are vulnerable due to the exotic Spartina alterniflora (S. alterniflora) invasion in China. However, little is known about mangrove sediment microbial community assembly processes and interactions under S. alterniflora invasion. Here, we investigated the assembly processes and co-occurrence networks of the archaeal and bacterial communities under S. alterniflora invasion along the coastlines of Fujian province, southeast China.RESULTS:Assembly of overall archaeal and bacterial communities was driven predominantly by stochastic processes, and the relative role of stochasticity was stronger for bacteria than archaea. Co-occurrence network analyses showed that the network structure of bacteria was more complex than that of the archaea. The keystone taxa often had low relative abundances (conditionally rare taxa), suggesting low abundance taxa may significantly contribute to network stability. Moreover, S. alterniflora invasion increased bacterial and archaeal drift process (part of stochastic processes), and improved archaeal network complexity and stability, but decreased the network complexity and stability of bacteria. This could be attributed to S. alterniflora invasion influenced microbial communities diversity and dispersal ability, as well as soil environmental conditions.CONCLUSIONS:This study fills a gap in the community assembly and co-occurrence patterns of both archaea and bacteria in mangrove ecosystem under S. alterniflora invasion. Thereby provides new insights of the plant invasion on mangrove microbial biogeographic distribution and co-occurrence network patterns.

Abstract:Benthic microeukaryotes are crucial mediators of biogeochemical cycles in coastal wetland ecosystems, yet their spatial and temporal variability remains poorly understood. This study delineates the diversity patterns of benthic microeukaryotes in a Spartina alterniflora -invaded mangrove ecosystem in Fujian, China. Using high-throughput sequencing of 18S rRNA gene transcripts, we identified the influences of vegetation, seasonality , and sediment depth on microeukaryotic communities. We discovered that vegetation cover significantly affects community composition, primarily driven by nutrient concentrations and pH. The community structure of microeukaryotes varied seasonally and vertically, correlating with changes in sediment temperature, pH, salinity, and fucoxanthin concentration. Notably, invasive Spartina alterniflora habitats showed enhanced heterotrophic interactions, suggesting that invasive species can reshape benthic microeukaryotic co-occurrence patterns. Seasonal co-occurrence patterns revealed dominant Bacillariophyta assemblages exhibited distinct network modules enriched in the cold (spring) and warm (summer and fall) seasons, respectively, which indicated potential ecological niche differentiation. Our findings reveal the complex relationships between environmental factors and benthic microeukaryotic diversity, offering insights into microbial responses to natural and invasive vegetation influences.
