Abstract:1. Ecological replacement using native mangrove species combined with physical treatments has become an effective method in controlling the spread of invasive cordgrass Spartina alterniflora. To re-establish ecosystem functions, trophic interactions between macrofauna and their potential food resources must be considered during the restoration process. 2. Here, we examined the changes in the diets of macrofauna in three restored mangrove ecosystems with different invasion histories following the removal of S.alterniflora in southern China. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios for dominant macrofauna, as well as their potential food sources, were analysed. The relative contributions of the different carbon sources to the diets of benthic macrofauna and isotopic niche width, including convex hull areas and standard ellipse areas of the macrofaunal community, were then calculated and compared among sampling sites in each region. 3. Our results indicated that Spartina-derived detritus contributed to >80% of the organic carbon sources of dominant macrofauna in the S.alterniflora communities in all three regions. Spartina alterniflora communities had lower convex hull areas and standard ellipse areas than natural mangrove forests, indicating significant resource competition among different consumer populations. Replacing S.alterniflora with the native mangrove species Kandelia obovata could reverse the diets of these macrofaunal species, resulting in a shift from homogeneous Spartina-dominated diets to more heterogeneous algae-based diets. It could take several decades to restore food web interactions to a pre-impacted state. Even the diets of macrofauna in mature mangrove (>40years) remained affected by the Spartina-derived organic matter. 4. Synthesis and applications. Our study reveals that the ecological replacement of invasive Spartina alterniflora using native mangrove species could restore food web function gradually. However, this removal and replacement approach is a long process and requires significant manpower and resources. Furthermore, the native ecosystem will continue to be influenced by the cordgrass as long as large areas of wetland nearby are occupied by S.alterniflora. Consequently, preventing the colonization of S.alterniflora should be a priority for coastal ecosystem management in southern China.

Abstract:On the Jiangsu coast, eastern China, Spartina alterniflora, which was introduced artificially into the region, is becoming a dominant plant species in the inter-tidal salt marshes. In order to evaluate the environmental and ecological impact of the colonization of S. alterniflora, we carried out investigations into the benthic macrofauna of the Spartina marshes of the Wanggang area, central Jiangsu coast, in 2006 and 2007. Based on analysis of the data sets obtained, 12 species of macrobenthos have been identified for the Wanggang salt marsh, including S. alterniflora, Cerithidea cingulata, Littorna scabra, Bithynia fuchsiana, Macrophthalmus japonicus, Uca arcuata, Nereis sp., Boleophthalmus petinirostris, Cyclina sinensis, Bullacta exarata, Angustassiminea castanea and Glaucomya chinensis. The results indicate that some of the native species have adapted to the new ecological environment associated with the cordgrass S. alterniflora. The biomass of macrobenthos varies significantly over different parts of the salt marsh. Further, there is a seasonal change in bio-density, with the density in summer (July and August)>autumn (November)>early summer (May). At the landward edge and over the central part of the S. alterniflora marsh, the bio-diversity is higher than the other areas of the marsh.
Changes in the Community Structure and Diet of Benthic Macrofauna in Invasive Spartina Alterniflora Wetlands Following Restoration with Native Mangroves

Abstract:The community structure and diet of benthic macrofauna in a Spartina alterniflora wetland and restored native Kandelia obovata mangrove forests of different ages were compared in Zhangjiangkou estuary, China. The biodiversity and total density of benthic macrofauna did not change after the restoration of Spartina wetlands with native mangrove species. However, the total biomass decreased significantly approximately half a year after physical treatments. This decrease in total biomass resulted from a change in the dominant gastropod from the larger Cerithidea djariensis to the smaller Assimine abrevicula. Gastropod and crab species in the Spartina wetland derived more than 80 % of their organic carbon from Spartina. Preliminary physical treatment and plantings of K. obovata did not change the diets of benthic macrofauna during year one of the restoration, but δ13C values in gastropod and crab species collected in both 10- and 40-year K. obovata forests were more depleted than those measured in the Spartina wetland, indicating a change in the diet of benthic macrofauna from homogenous to heterogeneous. These results suggest that biological replacement using native mangrove species can not only successfully control the spread of invasive Spartina, but also restore the diverse food web typical of a mature mangrove ecosystem.

Abstract:Coastal wetlands are the most productive ecosystems worldwide and can provide important ecosystem services, yet the characteristics of microbial community within these systems remain poorly understood. Microbial community of salt marsh vegetation and the associated soil physio-chemical properties were investigated in this study. Three typical Suaeda australis, Phragmites australis, Spartina alterniflora wetlands, and non-vegetated bare mudflats in the Zhoushan Islands were studied to advance the understanding of the characteristics of soil bacterial communities in coastal wetlands. Results showed that the bare mudflats exhibited high pH value and soil moisture content compared with the vegetated samples. In different vegetation types, the organic matter content, total nitrogen, and total potassium content decreased in the order: S. alterniflora wetland > P. australis wetland > S. australis wetland, and there was no obvious difference in total phosphorous content. The halophytes could decrease soil salinity compared with bare mudflats. Proteobacteria, Nitrospinae, Bacteroidetes, Acidobacteria, and Nitrospirae were the predominant level across all samples. Functional prediction showed that SPA-covered soil might play vital roles in sulphur cycling, while SUA and PHR covered soils were involved in nitrogen cycling. This study could provide the first insight into the microbial community of this study area and contribute to a better understanding of vegetation microbiota and bioremediation in coastal wetland ecosystem.
Effect of the exotic plant Spartina alterniflora on macrobenthos communities in salt marshes of the Yangtze River Estuary, China

Abstract:The Yangtze River Estuary is an important eco-region of China; it has, however, been heavily infested with the invasive plant Spartina alterniflora. This study examined the benthic communities associated with the invasive S. alterniflora and two native plants (Scirpus mariqueter and Phragmites australis) at three tidal elevations to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the impacts of marsh plant invasions on intertidal macrofauna of the Yangtze River Estuary. Spartina alterniflora had significantly sparser and taller stems than S. mariqueter, whereas the traits of S. alterniflora and P. australis were relatively similar. A total of 23 macrofaunal taxa were recorded during this study and their mean density was 1885ind.m−2. Numerically, gastropods and bivalves were the dominant group; together they constituted 95.72% of the total macrofaunal individuals. The differences in macrofaunal community structure were greater among different elevations than between native and exotic plants. The effects of plant types on species richness and densities of macroinvertebrates were generally weak. Densities of only one species (Glaucomya chinensis) differed significantly between S. alterniflora and S. mariqueter marshes at the lower elevation. The tolerance of the macrobenthos to plant invasions thus depends on various factors, including habitats, species of macrofauna, and local plants.

Abstract:Afforestation is a primary response to the loss and degradation of mangroves worldwide. The successful restoration of mangrove ecosystems is in part indicated by the rebuilding of macrobenthic community. However, the community dynamic of benthic macrofauna after mangrove afforestation was poorly known. Here, three quarterly surveys (2006–2007, 2014–2015, 2019–2020) of the benthic macrofauna and sediment grain size were conducted in a mix-planted mangrove stand (Kandelia obovata + Sonneratia apetala) in Xiamen Tong’an Bay, China. Our results showed that the community structure of benthic macrofauna differed significantly after mangrove afforestation. These differences were accompanied by the declines in the species number, abundance, biomass, and diversity (H’), as well as the fining of sediments. We also found that the epifauna and infauna exhibited different adaptabilities to mangrove vegetation. Additionally, shifts in the composition of the functional feeding groups were observed, indicating the modification of trophic structure after mangrove afforestation. We recommend that future mangrove afforestation programs call for a guide to coordinate habitats for different taxa.Graphic Abstract

Abstract:The exotic cordgrass Spartina alterniflora has severely invaded the mangrove wetlands in southern China and ecological restoration using native mangroves was conducted in an attempt to control this invasive species. In this study, the contents and pools of soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) were quantified to investigate the invasive effects of S. alterniflora and then to evaluate whether the ecological restoration of native mangrove could reverse those effects. S. alterniflora only showed significantly higher organic carbon content in the surface 0-10 cm of soil than in the uninvaded mudflat. The high δ13C values in the surface soil of the invaded habitat demonstrated that S. alterniflora contributed 42.6-62.2% of the organic carbon. The SOC for invasive S. alterniflora and newly restored mangroves (4 years and 14 years) was not enhanced in comparison to the unvegetated mudflat. S. alterniflora significantly increased the surface soil TN content, but decreased the available phosphorus content and TP density. The TN densities increased gradually with the mangrove restoration, while the TP densities were only slightly influenced. The results suggested that short-term invasion of S. alterniflora and subsequent mangrove restoration did not alter SOC or TN pool sizes, but S. alterniflora was shown to affect the potential carbon storage capacity produced by the mangroves in the Zhangjiang Estuary.
Loss of microbial functional diversity following Spartina alterniflora invasion reduces the potential of carbon sequestration and nitrogen removal in mangrove sediments-from a gene perspective

Abstract:Mangrove ecosystems play an important role in carbon (C) sequestration and nitrogen (N) removal. Although Spartina alterniflora has successively invaded native mangrove habitats during the preceding two decades, the effects of this invasion on the microbial functional potential involved in nutrient cycling remain unclear. In this study, metagenomic sequencing was used to investigate microbial C and N cycling in sediments derived from S. alterniflora and three native mangrove species (Kandelia obovata, Avicennia marina, and Aegiceras corniculatum). Greater differences in functional profiles of C and N cycling-related genes were observed between S. alterniflora and mangrove sediments than between different mangrove sediments. Functional diversity was lower in S. alterniflora sediments than in native mangrove sediments. The growth of Thaumarchaeota and Proteobacteria, was enhanced due to their resilience to diversity loss, while the growth of oligotrophs, such as Chloroflexi and Firmicutes, was inhibited in S. alterniflora sediments. Compared to mangrove sediments, the abundance of genes involved in C fixation and methane production was lower in S. alterniflora sediments. However, S. alterniflora significantly increased the gene abundance of pmo which controlled the oxidation process of CH4 to carbon dioxide. Additionally, genes involved in nitrification were enriched, whereas genes involved in N reduction processes, such as denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium, N immobilization, and N mineralization, were depleted in S. alterniflora sediments compared to mangrove sediments. Partial least squares regression models demonstrated that the decrease in soil organic C and increase in pH after S. alterniflora invasion induced the loss of microbial functional diversity, which was the main driver of changes in the abundances of genes involved in C and N cycling. Overall, our findings indicate that S. alterniflora invasion modifies the microbial functional profile of nutrient cycling in native mangrove ecosystems and potentially weakens the capacity of mangroves to sequester carbon and remove nitrogen.

Abstract:Coastal wetlands play a critical role in global carbon (C) cycling while they are frequently challenged by exotic plant invasion. Microbial residues are increasingly recognized as the key constituent of stable soil organic C (SOC) but their responses to plant invasion in coastal wetlands remain largely unknown. Here, we investigated the effect of Spartina alterniflora invasion on microbial residues and their contribution to SOC in coastal wetland ecosystems with distinct native species ( Phragmites australi s (marsh), Kandelia candel or Avicennia marina ). S. alterniflora invasion differentially altered microbial residue C accumulation in three coastal wetlands. Overall, the invasion of S. alterniflora significantly increased microbial residue C accumulation (17.8%) in marsh with native P. australis , while it showed negative or minor impacts on mangroves with K. candel and A. marine communities, despite nuanced site-specific differences. The divergent responses of microbial residues could be related to changes in edaphic conditions and plant inputs along with plant invasion process. Invasion of mangrove and marsh communities by S. alterniflora triggered divergent fungal and bacterial residue responses, leading to contrasting fungal to bacterial C ratios in invaded marsh and mangrove wetlands. The proportion of microbial residues in SOC pool was enhanced to some extent, with an increase by 14.4%, 33.0% and 1.9% in P. australis , K. candel and A. marine wetlands, respectively, despite inconsistent variations in total SOC with S. alterniflora invasion. This has an implication for an elevated preservation of microbial residue C relative to the other organic C fractions in the invaded coastal wetlands. These findings highlight the importance of anabolic microbial C sequestration process for the maintenance of wetland soil C, which may impact C cycling and balance in coastal wetland ecosystem subjected to S. alterniflora invasion. Our work provides new insights to capture the properties and mechanisms of microbial control over C sequestration as well as SOC source configuration in coastal wetlands undergoing S. alterniflora invasion.

Abstract:A theoretical study has been carried out to evaluate key parameters of InxGa1-xAs material at energies below the direct band edge. The spectral dependence of refractive index, absorption coefficient, and photoelastic constants are evaluated for the whole composition range in InxGa1-xAs material on the basis of simplified models of the interband transitions. The results obtained from the present study are compared with the experimental results and found to be in good agreement. We have also evaluated refractive-index steps between InxGa1-xAs and GaAs materials for variety of waveguiding device applications.

Abstract:Spartina alterniflora is an invasive plant whose effects on macrobenthic communities are still unclear. The Rudong coast has been invaded by S. alterniflora for years. The effects of S. alterniflora on the macrobenthic community structure have rarely been investigated along the Rudong coast. As the Rudong coastal wetland is an important staging site for migratory birds along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, an alteration in its macrobenthic community structure may have implications for the conservation of coastal wetland birds and rare waterbirds along that flyway, since macrobenthos are a major food source for these migratory birds. We conducted a survey in the Rudong coastal wetland to compare the macrobenthic community structure and sediment properties between a S. alterniflora -invaded area and a bare mud flat. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the biomass, abundance, species number or biodiversity between the invaded area and the mud flat. However, there were significantly higher heavy metal concentrations in the invaded area, and the community structure was obviously altered. The dominant Mactra veneriformis in the bare mud flat was replaced by another surface-feeding bivalve, Laternula anatina, in the invaded area. Our study suggested that the growth stage of the plants might be an important factor when assessing the impact of S. alterniflora on the macrobenthic community structure. Short and sparse S. alterniflora plants altered the benthic environment and species composition but did not necessarily reduce the biodiversity, abundance or biomass of macrobenthos. The dominant bivalve ( L. anatina ) living in the sparsely vegetated area was abundant, small, and soft-shelled, which might make it a better food source for the birds than the hard-shelled bivalve ( M. veneriformis ). Thus, S. alterniflora cannot be simply classified as a threatening factor to the Rudong coastal wetland ecosystem, and its advantages must also be considered.

Abstract:On the Jiangsu coast,eastern China,Spartina alterniflora,which was artificially introduced into the region,is becoming a dominant plant species in the inter-tidal salt marshes.For a better understanding of the environmental and ecological impact of the colonization of Spartina alterniflorea,the benthic macrofauna of the Spartina marshes of the Wanggang area,central Jiangsu coast,is investigated.At four stations located along a shore-normal profile across the Spartina salt-marsh,field work was carried out in May and November,2006,to collect benthic macrofauna samples.At each of the stations,and for each of the seasons,5 sampling areas(1m×1m in size) were established and all of the animal specimen that were present on the bed were collected,together with records of the associated environmental characteristics.In laboratory,the length of the shells was measured,and the species of the specimen was identified.Statistical analysis of the data obtained shows that there are 7 dominant macrofauna species,and the species compositions at the various stations in early summer is the same as those in late autumn.The size and number of Cerithidea cingulata in late autumn are larger than those in early summer,whilst the size and number of Littorna scabra and Bithynia fuchsiana show a different pattern,i.e.,they are relatively large in early summer.The biomass(represented by the number of individuals) varies significantly in different parts of the salt-marsh.The in situ observations indicate that some of the native species have adapted to the new ecological environment created by the artificially introduced cordgrass Spartina alterniflorea.

Abstract:Benthic microeukaryotes are crucial mediators of biogeochemical cycles in coastal wetland ecosystems, yet their spatial and temporal variability remains poorly understood. This study delineates the diversity patterns of benthic microeukaryotes in a Spartina alterniflora -invaded mangrove ecosystem in Fujian, China. Using high-throughput sequencing of 18S rRNA gene transcripts, we identified the influences of vegetation, seasonality , and sediment depth on microeukaryotic communities. We discovered that vegetation cover significantly affects community composition, primarily driven by nutrient concentrations and pH. The community structure of microeukaryotes varied seasonally and vertically, correlating with changes in sediment temperature, pH, salinity, and fucoxanthin concentration. Notably, invasive Spartina alterniflora habitats showed enhanced heterotrophic interactions, suggesting that invasive species can reshape benthic microeukaryotic co-occurrence patterns. Seasonal co-occurrence patterns revealed dominant Bacillariophyta assemblages exhibited distinct network modules enriched in the cold (spring) and warm (summer and fall) seasons, respectively, which indicated potential ecological niche differentiation. Our findings reveal the complex relationships between environmental factors and benthic microeukaryotic diversity, offering insights into microbial responses to natural and invasive vegetation influences.

Abstract:Structural aspects of the environment frequently influence the taxonomic and functional diversity of associated ecological communities. Spartina alterniflora and Phragmites australis both are structure-forming species in salt marshes but reciprocal invaders. Epifaunal communities on invasive Phragmites on the east coast of North America are reduced relative to native Spartina . But, the impacts of invasive Spartina on epiphytic communities in Phragmites dominated marshes in the Western Pacific are unknown. We examined epifauna on live and dead stems of invasive S . alterniflora and native P . australis in the Yangtze River estuary in China. Epiphytic invertebrate abundance on S. alterniflora was ~5× greater than on P. australis , suggesting that S. alterniflora supports more abundant epiphytic communities than P. australis , irrespective of region. For both live and dead stems, most epifaunal groups, including Namatoda, Copepoda, Halacarida and Oligochaeta, were more abundant on S. alterniflora than P. australis . Enhanced epifaunal abundance could benefit the nursery function of marshes by increasing secondary production. Dead S. alterniflora were the best habitat for nematodes, especially bacterivores and fungivores. This suggests that differences in litter quality may be important in these nematode communities and that more active biological processes may occur on Spartina influencing nutrient cycling rates.

Abstract:Lateral movements of materials and energy in coastal wetlands, due mainly to tidal activities, have been recognized as key processes in understanding the biogeochemical cycles of ecosystems. However, our understanding of the roles of lateral movement in shaping ecosystem functions remains limited. Here we quantified the effects of lateral sediment transport on total carbon (C, inorganic + organic) and nitrogen (N) pools in plants and soils in two dominant wetland types: invasive Spartina alterniflora (Spartina) marshes and native Phragmites australis (Phragmites) marshes in coastal Shanghai of the Yangtze Estuary. We found that the accreted sediments across the water-marsh gradients caused by lateral movement resulted in contrasting C and N contents between the two communities. The sediment load and C and N pools in the plants and soils of the Spartina marshes were significantly higher than those in the adjacent Phragmites marshes. The shifts in species composition and community structure not only altered the C and N balance but also enhanced the ecosystem net primary productivity. Our findings highlight the importance of lateral transport in altering ecosystem structure after Spartina invasion. The ecosystem C and N pools were significantly higher in the invaded ecosystems than in the native community. Our study also reveals that the plant density and structures can alter tidal hydrodynamics and the lateral transportations of sediments, which in turn influence ecosystem C and N cycle. The C accumulation processes of the native and invaded marshes were further complicated by the contrasting productivities of the ecosystems.

Abstract:Non-native plants can significantly affect biodiversity and ecological functions of local ecosystems. The effects of Kandelia obovata introduction and Spartina alterniflora invasion on benthic bacterial communities, predicted ecological functions and interactions between macrobenthos and microorganisms were studied. High-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene was used to investigate the bacterial communities in sediments covered by S. alterniflora and K. obovata at different stand ages. Bacterial communities showed obvious spatial variation. With increasing in planting age, K. obovate sediments were occupied by higher proportions of bacteria involved in degradation of organic carbon compounds, including various sulfate reduction bacteria, Bacteroidetes, Alphaproteobacteria, and pathogenic bacteria Vibrio, while the relative abundances of Actinomatinales and Sulfurovum were more abundant in younger K. obovate sites. Compared to adjacent mudflat, higher abundances of sulfate reduction bacteria were observed in S. alterniflora. This study indicated that K. obovata introduction had greater effects on bacterial communities, and sediment pH, grain size, soil organic carbon, total nitrogen and total phosphorus contents were main environmental factors affecting variation in bacterial communities. Tax4fun analysis further suggested that higher potentials of nitrogen fixation and dissimilatory sulfate reduction were observed after K. obovata restoration and S. alterniflora invasion. There were significant correlations between macrobenthos and bacterial communities, especially variations in relative abundance of infaunas and herbivores after K. obovata introduction and S. alterniflora invasion, which significantly affected bacterial communities and potentials involved in nitrogen cycling. The present study provided valuable information in scientific assessing the impacts of non-native plant disturbance on local ecosystems.

Abstract:Coastal wetlands play a crucial role in the global carbon (C) cycle; however, they have been affected by the invasive plant Spartina alterniflora . The impacts of S. alterniflora invasions on soil organic carbon (SOC) source and composition in wetlands are poorly understood compared to SOC stocks. This hinders the accurate estimation of blue C budgets owing to the long-term effects of S. alterniflora invasions. Here, a space-for-time substitution method was applied to investigate SOC accumulation in invasive 5-, 10-, 15-, 18-, and 21-year-old S. alterniflora communities. This was compared with bare flat in the topsoil (0–10 cm) and subsoil (30–60 cm) of coastal wetlands. Biomarkers (lignin phenols and amino sugars) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to describe the accumulation patterns of plant- and microbial-derived C across varying S. alterniflora invasion times, as well as associated stabilization mechanisms. Plant-derived C dominated the SOC content compared to microbial-derived C during S. alterniflora invasions, while microbial-derived C played a more critical role in SOC stability than that of plant-derived C. At both soil depths, microbial-derived C gradually increased with increasing invasion time, whereas plant-derived C initially increased and then decreased, consistent with changes in SOC content. The variation in inundation conditions, influenced by tides, emerged as a significant factor affecting the accumulation of plant- and microbial-derived C, as well as SOC stability. Decreased inundation frequency and increased oxygen exposure, driven by tides, may lead to a rapid rise in SOC mineralization and the enrichment of microbial-derived C at the expense of plant-derived C. Consequently, this process improved SOC stability. These findings hold substantial implications for potential C loss resulting from the long-term impacts of S. alterniflora invasions. Furthermore, they may help predict the long-term effects of S. alterniflora invasions on blue C budgets within the context of global change scenarios.

Abstract:Invasive Spartina alterniflora has significant impacts on sediment carbon pool and turnover in the tidal wetlands of estuaries and coasts. Yet, how this exotic S. alterniflora affects sediment organic carbon mineralization dynamics remains poorly understood. In this study, sediment geochemical properties, organic carbon fractions, and mineralization dynamics were examined in a native Cyperus malaccensis habitat and three invasive S. alterniflora habitats (6-, 10-, and 14-year-old) in summer and winter. We found that invasive S. alterniflora generally increased sediment total organic carbon and their labile fraction contents. The organic carbon mineralization rates and cumulative carbon mineralization amounts were significantly influenced by invasive S. alterniflora , and their values increased with this exotic plant invasion chronosequences. The mineralization rates and cumulative mineralization amounts were also characterized by higher values in surface sediment (0 – 10 cm depth) compared to subsurface sediment (10 – 20 cm depth) and by seasonal variations with higher values in summer than in winter. The sediment organic carbon labile fractions, rather than total organic carbon, were the most important factor affecting carbon mineralization dynamics. The cumulative carbon mineralization amounts exhibited an excellent fit to the first-order kinetic equation ( R 2 ≥ 0.93). The changes in modeled kinetic parameters (potential carbon mineralization amounts ( C 0 ) and carbon mineralization rate constant ( k )) among these four habitats were similar to carbon mineralization rates, implying invasive S. alterniflora promoted the availabilities of organic compounds for microbial respiration metabolism. Overall, our findings highlighted the importance of S. alterniflora invasion in accelerating organic carbon decomposition and carbon dioxide release potential, although it also increases carbon accumulation.

Abstract:Spartina alterniflora invasion has initiated one of the greatest changes to occur in coastal wetlands in China, and ecological replacement using mangrove species such as Kandelia obovata is an effective method for controlling these invasions. The effects of S. alterniflora invasions and subsequent K. obovata restorations on soil microbial community structures in different seasons are still not fully understood. In this study, soil samples were collected from six vegetation types (unvegetated mudflat, invasive S. alterniflora stands, one-/eight-/ten-year K. obovata restoration areas, and native mature K. obovata forests) in summer and winter. The variations in the soil microbial community structure between the vegetation types across two seasons were then characterized based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and the physicochemical properties that shaped the microbial communities were also determined. The invasion and restoration processes significantly influenced microbial community diversity, composition, and putative functions in different seasonal patterns. Microbial communities from a ten-year restoration area and a native mature K. obovata area shared more similarities than other areas. In both seasons, the key environmental factors driving microbial community included total carbon and nitrogen content, the ratio of carbon to nitrogen, and the soil pH. In addition, total sulfur and total phosphorus contents significantly contributed to structuring microbial communities in summer and winter, respectively. This study provides insights into microbial diversity, composition, and functional profiles in association with physicochemical impacts, with the aim of understanding microbial ecological functions during the invasion and restoration processes in wetland ecosystems.
