Abstract:The optical properties of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are strongly determined by their prominent excitonic natures. Here, we demonstrate a simple method for regulating the excitonic populations in monolayer WS2 to modulate its photoluminescence (PL) properties via Rhodamine 6G (R6G) decorating. After R6G decorating, the PL of the monolayer WS2 is strongly quenched and the spectral weight of trions increases, due to the type-II energy band alignment of WS2/R6G heterointerface which facilitates the photoinduced electron transfer from R6G to WS2 and hole transfer from WS2 to R6G, resulting in the reduction of exciton population. Interestingly, the excitonic population, PL intensity, and spectral weight of trions in the monolayer WS2 can be monotonously tuned with increase of the decorated R6G on the monolayer WS2 surface. In addition, time-resolved PL measurements show that the PL lifetime of the monolayer WS2 with R6G becomes shorter than that of the pristine WS2, which further proves the photoinduced charge transfer mechanism in the WS2/R6G heterointerface. This work provides a photophysical insight into the excitonic modulation and PL quenching behavior in the TMDs/R6G hybridization structure, which could be beneficial to future optoelectronic devices for photodetection and chemical sensing applications.
