Abstract:Fiber-optic anemometers have attracted an increasing attention over the past decade owing to their high sensitivity, wide dynamic range, low power consumption, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. However, expensive instruments may limit their practical applications. Herein, a new type of airflow sensor based on optical micro/nanofiber (MNF) is proposed and realized. The sensing element is a flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) cantilever embedded with a U-shaped MNF. Upon exposure to airflow, the induced deflection of the cantilever results in a bending-dependent transmittance variation of the embedded MNF. The performance of the sensor can be engineered by tuning the cantilever thickness and/or the MNF diameter. When four cantilevers are arranged in two orthogonal directions, the transmittance of each cantilever will be dependent on both flow speed and direction. By analysing the output signals of the four cantilevers, omnidirectional airflow with flow speed within 15 m/s were experimentally measured. In addition, a variety of voice and respiratory signals can be monitored and distinguished in real-time using an optimized cantilever with a resolution of 0.012 m/s, presenting great potential for health monitoring applications.Graphic abstract

Abstract:An ultra-sensitive plasmonic fiber-optic photothermal anemometer is proposed and demonstrated. The device consists of a highly-tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) sensor, which is coated with a gold layer exciting surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and then carbon nanotubes as the photothermal conversion element. The carbon nanotubes deposited on the sensor surface efficiently convert light from the heating laser, which is wavelength matched to the SPR signature, into heat. Air flow draws away the surface heat, thus inducing both a strong SPR wavelength shift and a changed of the power modulation. Using this approach, the proposed anemometer accounts for a dynamic range from 0.05 m/s to 0.65 m/s for wind speed measurement. In addition, the real-time monitoring of wind speed has been proved by measuring the intensity of the heating laser source. This device is a valuable candidate for a wide range of potential applications in both scientific research and industrial production, given its simplicity and robustness in structure.

Abstract:In this work, a novel and simple optical fiber hot-wire anemometer based on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) coated tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) is proposed and demonstrated. For the hot-wire wind speed sensor design, TFBG is an ideal in-fiber sensing structure due to its unique features. It is utilized as both light coupling and temperature sensing element without using any geometry-modified or uncommon fiber, which simplifies the sensor structure. To further enhance the thermal conversion capability, SWCNTs are coated on the surface of the TFBG instead of traditional metallic materials, which have excellent thermal characteristics. When a laser light is pumped into the sensor, the pump light propagating in the core will be easily coupled into cladding of the fiber via the TFBG and strongly absorbed by the SWCNTs thin film. This absorption acts like a hot-wire raising the local temperature of the fiber, which is accurately detected by the TFBG resonance shift. In the experiments, the sensor's performances were investigated and controlled by adjusting the inherent angle of the TFBG, the thickness of SWCNTs film, and the input power of the pump laser. It was demonstrated that the developed anemometer exhibited significant light absorption efficiency up to 93%, and the maximum temperature of the local area on the fiber was heated up to 146.1 degrees C under the relatively low pump power of 97.76 mW. The sensitivity of -0.3667 nm/(m/s) at wind speed of 1.0 m/s was measured with the selected 12 degrees TFBG and 1.6 mu m film. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

A Novel Low-Power-Consumption All-Fiber-Optic Anemometer with Simple System Design

Abstract:A compact and low-power consuming fiber-optic anemometer based on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) coated tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) is presented. TFBG as a near infrared in-fiber sensing element is able to excite a number of cladding modes and radiation modes in the fiber and effectively couple light in the core to interact with the fiber surrounding mediums. It is an ideal in-fiber device used in a fiber hot-wire anemometer (HWA) as both coupling and sensing elements to simplify the sensing head structure. The fabricated TFBG was immobilized with an SWCNT film on the fiber surface. SWCNTs, a kind of innovative nanomaterial, were utilized as light-heat conversion medium instead of traditional metallic materials, due to its excellent infrared light absorption ability and competitive thermal conductivity. When the SWCNT film strongly absorbs the light in the fiber, the sensor head can be heated and form a "hot wire". As the sensor is put into wind field, the wind will take away the heat on the sensor resulting in a temperature variation that is then accurately measured by the TFBG. Benefited from the high coupling and absorption efficiency, the heating and sensing light source was shared with only one broadband light source (BBS) without any extra pumping laser complicating the system. This not only significantly reduces power consumption, but also simplifies the whole sensing system with lower cost. In experiments, the key parameters of the sensor, such as the film thickness and the inherent angle of the TFBG, were fully investigated. It was demonstrated that, under a very low BBS input power of 9.87 mW, a 0.100 nm wavelength response can still be detected as the wind speed changed from 0 to 2 m/s. In addition, the sensitivity was found to be -0.0346 nm/(m/s) under the wind speed of 1 m/s. The proposed simple and low-power-consumption wind speed sensing system exhibits promising potential for future long-term remote monitoring and on-chip sensing in practical applications.

Abstract:High-performance airflow sensors are in great demand in numerous fields but still face many challenges, such as slow response speed, low sensitivity, large detection threshold, and narrow sensing range. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) exhibit many advantages in fabricating airflow sensors due to their nanoscale diameters, excellent mechanical and electrical properties, and so on. However, the intrinsic extraordinary properties of CNTs are not fully exhibited in previously reported CNT-based airflow sensors due to the mixed structures of macroscale CNT assemblies. Herein, this article presents suspended CNT networks (SCNTNs) as high-performance airflow sensors, which are self-assembled by ultralong CNTs and short CNTs in a one-step floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition process. The SCNTN-based airflow sensors achieved a record-breaking short response time of 0.021 s, a high sensitivity of 0.0124 s m-1 , a small detection threshold of 0.11 m s-1 , and a wide detection range of ≈0.11-5.51 m s-1 , superior to most of the state-of-the-art airflow sensors. To reveal the sensing mechanism, an acoustic response testing system and a mathematical model are developed. It is found that the airflow-caused intertube stress change resulted in the resistance variation of SCNTNs.

Abstract:We report a low-power-consumption fiber-optic “hot wire” anemometer based on long-period grating (LPG) with single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) coating. A uniform SWCNT film is deposited on a bare LPG acting as both light coupling and sensing element. By carefully selecting the order of the cladding mode and operating wavelength, the LPG shows a much higher temperature sensitivity than that of a regular fiber Bragg grating. Besides, SWCNT is a single-wall cylindrical nanostructure material with excellent absorption in the infrared range and high-thermal conductivity. Due to these two features, the proposed sensor has extremely low-power consumption and simple operation by utilizing a broadband light source as both heating source and probing light source. A sensitivity of 102.5 pm/(m/s) at the wind speed of 1 m/s was obtained experimentally with 1.6- $\mu \text{m}$ -thick SWCNT film.

Abstract:A metal diaphragm-based airflow sensor based on fiber-optic Fabry-Perot (F-P) interference has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The sensor is composed of glass sleeving, ceramic ferrule and metal diaphragm. Through data calibration, a practical airflow sensor has been fabricated. As a result of the stainless steel diaphragm and open F-P cavity, the durability of the sensor is ensured, and it can be used in poor air quality environments. Experimental results in the airflow field show that the sensor has the potential to estimate the air quantity of high-speed airflow in various air conduit

Abstract:Aiming to achieve simultaneous measurement of airflow speed and direction with high accuracy, a new all-optical airflow sensor based on triangulation concept is proposed. It consists of a suspending tapered fiber tip and a multicore fiber, acting as the flow interaction element and the localization reference, respectively. During operation, the detection light emitted from the tapered fiber will be coupled to the multicore fiber. Upon exposure to airflow, the induced deflection of the tapered fiber tip will change the individual receiving optical powers of the three cores arranged into triangular pattern, which are dependent on both of the flow speed and direction. Through properly designing structure parameters as core spacing, suspending length, tip diameter and axial fiber distance, the omnidirectional airflow with flow speed within 90 mm/s has been experimentally measured with high fidelity.

Abstract:Airflow sensors are in huge demand in many fields such as the aerospace industry, weather forecasting, environmental monitoring, chemical and biological engineering, health monitoring, wearable smart devices, etc. However, traditional airflow sensors can hardly meet the requirements of these applications in the aspects of sensitivity, response speed, detection threshold, detection range, and power consumption. Herein, this work reports high-performance airflow sensors based on suspended ultralong carbon nanotube (CNT) crossed networks (SCNT-CNs). The unique topologies of SCNT-CNs with abundant X junctions can fully exhibit the extraordinary intrinsic properties of ultralong CNTs and significantly improve the sensing performance and robustness of SCNT-CNs-based airflow sensors, which simultaneously achieved high sensitivity, fast response speed, low detection threshold, and wide detection range. Moreover, the capability for encapsulation also guaranteed the practicality of SCNT-CNs, enabling their applications in respiratory monitoring, flow rate display and transient response analysis. Simulations were used to unveil the sensing mechanisms of SCNT-CNs, showing that the piezoresistive responses were mainly attributed to the variation of junction resistances. This work shows that SCNT-CNs have many superiorities in the fabrication of advanced airflow sensors as well as other related applications.

Abstract:A novel highly sensitive airflow sensor based on Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) and Vernier effect is proposed and demonstrated. The sensor is fabricated by splicing a section of hollow-core fiber (HCF) between a lead-in single mode fiber (SMF) and a section of SMF, which is almost one-fifteenth the length of the HCF. Airflow changes the cavity length of the FPI, which leads to the shift of the reflection spectrum. The reflection beam from the last end of the SMF is utilized to generate the Vernier effect, which enlarges the shift of the spectrum for 9.57 times than that of a single FPI. According to the experimental results, when the airflow ranges from 0 to 7 m/s, the spectrum of the sensor shifts as high as 7.9 nm which is almost eight times more than that of the self-heating sensor based on silver-coated FBG. And the highest airflow velocity sensitivity of the sensor can reach 1.541 nm/(m/s) in the region of 3 m/s ~ 7 m/s. Besides, the sensor has a series of advantages such as fast response, low cost, compact size, and reflection measurement.

Abstract:A tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) deposited with carbon nanotube (CNT) is proposed to simultaneously measure the surrounding refractive index (SRI) and temperature. Assisted by the interaction between the CNT deposition layer and the TFBG's cladding mode, the increase in SRI could significantly attenuate the coupling intensity of cladding modes, while the resonant wavelengths keep almost unchanged. Therefore, the temperature response of the CNT-deposited TFBG could be further obtained by tracking the shifted resonant wavelength. In addition, the CNT deposition greatly enhances the sensing capability in a low refractive index region of 1 similar to 1.428, presenting great potentials in biochemical sensing.

A Transflective Nano-Wire Grid Polarizer Based Fiber-Optic Sensor

Abstract:A transflective nano-wire grid polarizer is fabricated on a single mode fiber tip by focused ion beam machining. In contrast to conventional absorptive in-line polarizers, the wire grids reflect TE-mode, while transmitting TM-mode light so that no light power is discarded. A reflection contrast of 13.7 dB and a transmission contrast of 4.9 dB are achieved in the 1,550 nm telecom band using a 200-nm wire grid fiber polarizer. With the help of an optic circulator, the polarization states of both the transmissive and reflective lights in the fiber may be monitored simultaneously. A kind of robust fiber optic sensor is thus proposed that could withstand light power variations. To verify the idea, a fiber pressure sensor with the sensitivity of 0.24 rad/N is demonstrated. The corresponding stress-optic coefficient of the fiber is measured. In addition to pressure sensing, this technology could be applied in detecting any polarization state change induced by magnetic fields, electric currents and so on.

Abstract:In this paper, we fully investigate a nonlinear device based on a tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) coated with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). We found that the nonlinear optical properties were significantly effective in 6 degree tilted fiber Bragg grating and similar to 1.3um thickness. The signal noise to ratio (SNR) of the FWM is up to 10.11dB.

Abstract:In this study, we proposed a bifunctional sensor of high sensitivity and slow light based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs). An array of left semicircular ring (LSR), right semicircular ring (RSR), and circular ring (CR) resonators are utilized to form the proposed metamaterial. The proposed structure can achieve double plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) effects under the excitation of a TM-polarization wave. The double PIT originated from the destructive interference between two bright modes and a dark mode. A coupled harmonic oscillator model is used to describe the destructive interference between the two bright modes and a dark mode, and the simulation results agree well with the calculated results. Moreover, we investigate the influence of the coupling distance, period, and flare angle on the PIT spectra. The relationship between the resonant frequencies, full width at half maximum (FWHM), amplitudes, quality factors ( Q ), and the coupling distance is also studied. Finally, a high sensitivity of 1.02 THz RIU −1 is obtained, and the transmission performance can be maintained at a good level when the incident angle is less than 40°. Thus, the sensor can cope with situations where electromagnetic waves are not perpendicular to the structure's surface. The maximum figure of merit (FOM) can reach about 8.26 RIU −1 ; to verify the slow light property of the device, the slow light performance of the proposed structure is investigated, and a maximum time delay (TD) of 22.26 ps is obtained. The proposed CNT-based metamaterial can be used in electromagnetically induced transparency applications, such as sensors, optical memory devices, and flexible terahertz functional devices.

Abstract:Ultrasensitively weighing nanoparticle masses is at the heart of modern measurement techniques. The traditional electrical mass measurement techniques, which are supported by external circuits, have been well known since the previous decade. In the present article, based on the all-optical technique, we propose a scheme of an optical sensor to weigh the masses of nanoparticles via a doubly clamped suspended carbon nanotube resonator. By measuring the resonance frequency shift of the nanotube in the probe absorption spectrum, we can easily determine the masses of external particles landing onto the surface of nanotube.
