Abstract:Four chalcones with large conjugated structures have been designed and synthesized. The excellent absorption properties of four chalcones in the visible region (λmax = 407 ~ 483 nm, εmax = 24600-60200 M-1 cm-1) was due to the large conjugated structures and the great intramolecular charge transfer effects. After forming a three-component photoinitiating system with iodine and amine, the free radical polymerization of acrylates was effectively initiated under UV-LED and Blue LED irradiation, with a final double bond conversion of 92 %. The photochemical mechanism was determined by steady-state photolysis, fluorescence quenching, cyclic voltammetry and ESR experiments. In addition, the chalcones have good photobleaching properties and biocompatibility through photoinduced degradation and cytotoxicity experiments. The excellent properties exhibit that these chalcones promise great applications in the field of photopolymerization.

Abstract:Two novel visible light photoinitiators 4-(10-methyl-10H-phenothiazin-3-yl) but-3-en-2-one (PBO) and (1E,4E)-1,5-bis(10-methyl-10H-phenothiazin-3-yl)-1,4-pentadien-3-one (BMPPO) were successfully designed and synthesized. PBO and BMPPO have broad absorption range from 350 to 500 nm with the maximum absorption wavelength at 400 nm and 440 nm respectively. Three-component photoinitiating system of BMPPO/iodonium/amine was developed for free radical polymerization of acrylates. The results demonstrated that the photoinitiating system displayed rapid polymerization and high final vinyl group conversions under the irradiation of UV-LED (365 nm), blue LED (440) nm and solar light resource. Moreover, photopolymerization kinetics was studied by real-time FT-IR spectrum, the double band conversion was achieved up to 90% for BMPPO. The photocuring mechanism was identified via steady state photolysis and electron spin resonance spin-trapping experiments. The possible photoinduced mechanism of PBO and BMPPO in the presence of a co-initiator occurred through electron transfer. In addition, BMPPO possesses rapid photobleaching and good biocompatibility performance tested by photoinduced degradation and cytotoxicity experiments respectively, which exhibited that BMPPO has potential for light-color coatings and food packaging field.

Abstract:This paper presents four one‐component Type II visible‐light‐absorbing chalcones (CY10‐13) that containing various fused aromatic rings as its π‐conjugated moiety, that is a 2‐naphthalene moiety for CY10, 1‐naphthalene for CY11, benzofuran for CY12 and benzothiophene for CY13. The absorption region changed significantly when introducing various fused aromatic rings. However, they all exhibited good absorption properties ranging from 300 to 450 nm that could be well‐matched under UV, 365 nm and 405 nm light irradiations. Furthermore, the structure–reactivity relationship was also studied through thermal, photochemical, electrochemical and computation properties. Finally, all the chalcones demonstrated photoinitiating ability without additive additional hydrogen donor in their systems. Both of the CY11 and CY12 based photoinitiating formulations initiated sufficiently upon UV and LED@405 nm light exposures. Furthermore, triphenylamine‐substituted chalcone analogous (CY8) was added for comparison. Although CY10‐13 compounds had lower light harvesting regions than CY8, some of those new chalcones exhibited better photoreactivity. Thus, a chalcone containing fused aromatic ring featuring straightforward synthesis as well as versatile absorption region and photoinitiating performance, has great potential in photopolymerization applications. Abstract:In this work, six bis-chalcone-based photoinitiators (1E,4E)-1,5-diphenylpenta-1,4-dien-3-one (DKE-1), (1E,4E)-1,5-di(naphthalen-2-yl) penta-1,4-dien-3-one (DKE-2), (1E,4E)-1,5-di(anthracen-9-yl)penta-1,4-dien-3-one (DKE-3), (1E,4E)-1,5-di(pyren-1-yl)penta-1,4-dien-3-one (DKE-4), (1E,3E,6E,8E)-1,9-diphenylnona-1,3,6,8-tetraen-5-one (DKE-5) and (3E,6E)-1,9-diphenylnona-3,6-dien-1,8-diyn-5-one (DKE-6) were synthesized by Claisen-Schmidt reaction. The influence of different polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon structures and unsaturated groups on the maximum absorption wavelength, solubility and migration properties of DKEs was studied. It was found that with the increase of the number of benzene rings for DKE-1 to DKE-4 and the introduction of CC, CC bonds for DKE-5-DKE-6 in the molecular structure, the absorption wavelength gradually red-shifted to the visible region, the maximum absorption wavelength of DKE-4 and DKE-6 was 442 nm, 395 nm respectively. Besides, DKE-5 and DKE-6 can effectively solve the problem of poor solubility. Three-component photoinitiating system of DKEs/iodonium/amine presented efficiently photopolymerization and the double bond conversion can reach >80 %. DKEs have shown certain photobleaching properties, indicating that it can be used for deep curing of coatings. In addition, DKEs have low migration, the migration ratio of DKE-4 was low to 0.7 %.

Abstract:Two water-soluble bis-chalcone-based photoinitiators 4,4′-((((1 E ,1′ E )-(2-oxocyclopentane-1,3-diylidene)bis(methaneylylidene))bis(thiophene-5,2-diyl))bis(9 H -carbazole-3,9-diyl))bis(butane-1-sulfonic acid) (KSES) and 4,4′-((((1 E ,1′ E )-(2-oxocyclohexane-1,3-diylidene)bis(methaneylylidene))bis(thiophene-5,2-diyl))bis(9 H -carbazole-3,9-diyl))bis(butane-1-sulfonic acid) (KSTS) were successfully synthesized. The maximum absorption wavelengths ( λ max ) of KSES and KSTS in water were 514 and 469 nm, respectively. KSES and KSTS could be combined with diphenyliodonium hexafluorophosphate (Iod) and triethanolamine (TEOA) to form a three-component photoinitiation system, which could quickly trigger the curing of acrylate coatings under visible light with a final CC bond conversion of more than 98%. The high free radical polymerization efficiency also made the bis-chalcone/Iod/TEOA system suitable for 3D printing, successfully printing clear and photobleached 3D objects. In addition, we carried out photosteady-state degradation, fluorescence quenching and ESR-ST experiments to further study the photopolymerization mechanism. Besides, KSES and KSTS also exhibited good biocompatibility, photobleaching performance and extremely low mobility. Considering the above excellent performance, the two water-soluble bis-chalcone-based photoinitiators reported in this study are very good choices for visible light polymerization in water-soluble systems.

Abstract:A novel chalcone-based derivative, E-PHMTO, equipped with an alkyl chain and chemically similar to the commercial photoinitiator ITX, was successfully synthesized. Compared to the intermediate reaction products E/Z-HMTO, the introduction of an alkyl chain to the chalcone group shifts the focus of E-PHMTO towards proton transfer rather than isomeric side reaction, resulting in a LED-sensitive photoinitiator with excellent initiating performance through steric hindrance. Furthermore, E-PHMTO demonstrated superior initiating activity compared to ITX under LED@385nm irradiation and proved to possess outstanding polymerization properties suitable for 3D photo-printing applications. This research might offer a versatile approach for the convenient design and preparation of highly efficient, LED-sensitive chalcone photoinitiators.

Abstract:A series of chalcone derivatives in which two chalcone groups are attached by alkyldioxy chains were synthesized and characterized by 1 H NMR, UV–Vis, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectral analysis. Upon the irradiation of 365-nm UV light, the chalcone groups in the molecules underwent [2π + 2π] photodimerization. The photocrosslinking properties were investigated both in solution and in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) solid films on quartz plate. It has been found that the photocrosslinking rates of the compounds depended on the different flexibility of the functional groups, which was determined by the length of the spacer chain between the two chalcone moieties. The longest soft chain containing derivatives has a faster photocrosslinking rate both in solution and in solid film. Irradiated by polarized ultraviolet light (PUV), all of the films doped with bis-chalcone derivatives showed an anisotropic absorption property, which may give a promising application as LC-alignment materials.

Abstract:A new class of disilyl-substituted poly(phenylenevinylene)-related copolymers (CN-Si-Carb-PPV, CN-Si-Ph-PPV) was synthesized by a simple condensation polymerization route. The UV–vis absorption of the polymers has strong absorption bands, which corresponds to the π–π* transition of π-conjugated segment. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra show that the emission peaks of two polymer films both have about 100 nm bathochromic shifts compared to the polymer solution. Single-layer light-emitting diodes (LED) were fabricated, which showed lower threshold voltage. The devices both emitted green light.

Abstract:As one of the most essential components in photocuring system, photoinitiators (PIs) exert a crucial influence on the properties of the cured product. However, commercially available PIs encounter challenges in simultaneously achieving efficient photoinitiation performance and excellent light absorption properties, significantly limiting their applications in various fields. Here, two bis-chalcones and four corresponding oxime esters (OXEs) were designed and synthesized as highly efficient PIs. Featuring a structure comprising bis-chalcone and two diphenyl sulfides, the conjugated systems in these compounds enhance their light-absorption properties in near-ultraviolet and visible region, effectively. Both the frontier molecular orbital simulations and excited state calculations suggest the contribution of sulfur atoms to electron delocalization and the formation of conjugated structure. Due to the high reactivity of the NO bond in OXE moiety, the four OXEs exhibit exceptional free radical photoinitiating ability in commercial acrylic monomers/oligomers with LED@365 nm as light source. Notably, one of them demonstrates superior performance in the photoinitiation of multifunctional crosslinker, achieving more than 70% conversion within 3 s, coupled with outstanding absorption at 365 nm. These chalcone-based OXEs are considered to exert significant potential in the realm of free radical photocuring.

Abstract:We report the theoretical and experimental investigations of structure–property relationships for [Formula: see text] at the wavelength of 800[Formula: see text]nm in three D-[Formula: see text]-A-[Formula: see text]-A type chalcone derivatives. Theoretically, the second hyperpolarizability [Formula: see text] at the wavelength of 800[Formula: see text]nm is numerically computed from the combination of density functional theory and semi-empirical method. Experimentally, we synthesize these three chalcone derivatives and investigate their nonlinear optical (NLO) properties using the femtosecond-pulsed [Formula: see text]-scan measurements at 800[Formula: see text]nm. It is shown that the dependence of the measured [Formula: see text] on the molecular structure has a trend, consistent with that of computational [Formula: see text]. These results indicate that the enhancement of the NLO response can be realized by design of the electron donating strength in the D-[Formula: see text]-A-[Formula: see text]-A type molecule.

Abstract:Structurally simple chalcone derivatives 1-2 are prepared and their diversified emission behaviors are deeply investigated. Two polymorphs (1G:lambda(em) = 536 nm, Phi(f) = 0.08, tau = 1.81 ns; 1O:lambda(em) = 573 nm, Phi(f) = 0.19, tau = 10.82 ns) with distinctively different emission behaviors are constructed by finely controlling the crystallization conditions of compound 1. 1G exhibits typical amplified spontaneous emission while 1O shows an interesting blue shift under smashing process (1O-S: lambda(em) = 562 nm, Phi(f) = 0.23, tau = 6.42 ns), which is ascribed to their different molecular packing structures and intermolecular interactions. Notably, simply introducing a fluorine substituent effectively endows the crystal with red emission (crystal 2: lambda(em) = 598 nm, Phi(f) = 0.16, tau = 18.77 ns). Thus multicolor emissions including green, yellow, orange, and red emissions are obtained based on this simple chalcone skeleton.

Abstract:Two bi-functional compounds with a structure containing both a photochromic group indolinospiropyran and a photo-crosslinkable group chalcone connected by a soft spacer chain with alkyloxy and alkyl ester, or alkyldiester groups, were synthesized and the structures were confirmed with H-1 NMR, FTIR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The bi-functional compounds were dissolved in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) or PMMA-co-4-hydroxychalcone methacrylate chloroform solution, and used to prepare photochromic PMMA films by a facile spin-coating method. Photocrosslinking reaction between the chalcone groups and photochromism of the spiropyran groups were accompanied under irradiation of 365 nm UV light. It was proved that the chalcone derivatives containing polymer films effectively retarded the decaying behavior of photochromism after photocycloaddition of the chalcone groups.

Abstract:Four polyfluorene derivatives with chiral center in the backbone or at the side chain, PLPheF (P1), PLPhGlyF (P2), PDPheF (P3), and PSPF (P4), have been designed and synthesized through the Pd-catalyzed Suzuki polymerization. The structures of these polymers are characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, UV−vis, photoluminescence (PL), and CD spectroscopic methods as well as elemental analysis. These four polymers exhibit the linearly polarized photoluminescence in dilute solutions. The investigation of the absorption and emission behaviors indicates that the aggregates and/or the excited states excimers might be formed in THF solution at higher concentrations. We also observe the emission dichroic ratio RPL of these polymers in films is increased in comparison with that in solutions. After film annealing, polymers P1, P2, and P3 also show obvious linearly polarized photoluminescence at 500−650 nm. Moreover, the films of polymer P4 exhibit good thermal spectral stability after annealing in comparison with other three polymers P1, P2, and P3. We also report the circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopic properties of these four polymers in THF solutions.

Abstract:With the development of thick film curing in the field of photocuring, the design and preparation of visible light photoinitiators (PIs) have become particularly important. Based on the phenothiazine group, we designed and synthesized four new visible light photoinitiators (diphenylphosphoryl)(10-methyl-10H-phenothiazin-2-yl)methanone (QTPO-1), (diphenylphosphoryl)(10-ethyl-10H-phenothiazin-2-yl)methanone (QTPO-2), (diphenylphosphoryl)(10-phenyl-10H-phenothiazin-2-yl)methanone (QTPO-3), and (10-benzoyl-3,7-bis(dimethylamino)-10H-phenothiazin-2-yl)(diphenylphosphoryl) methanone (QTPO-4). QTPOs are well soluble in solvents and monomers. Among them, the absorption peak of QTPO-4 red-shifted to 667 nm with the molar absorption coefficient is 15,530 M −1 cm −1 , indicating that it can be used for Near-IR light polymerization. The double bond conversion (DC) rates of QTPO-1, QTPO-2, and QTPO-3 in Poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) under the irradiation of Light-emitting diode (LED)@365 nm were high up to 97 %, 90 %, and 93 %, and after addition of N -phenylglycine (NPG), the DC increased to 99 %, 93 %, and 98 % respectively, while the DC rate of 2,4,6-Trimethyl benzoyldiphenyl phosphine oxide (TPO) is 94 %. The DC rate of QTPO-4/NPG in (PEGDA) reaches 84 % under the irradiation of LED@660 nm. Moreover, the curing depth of QTPO-4/NPG/TMPTA under LED@660 nm was 1.66 cm which was almost 1.9 times that of TPO/TMPTA under LED@405 nm (0.85 cm), and the migration ratio of QTPO-4 low to 0.22 %. Meanwhile, the polymerization mechanism of QTPOs was studied and verified through steady-state photolysis and electron spin resonance spin-trapping experiment (ESR-ST). Additionally, the exhibit superior biocompatibility performance and thermal stability of QTPOs are illustrated by cytotoxicity assays and thermal stability tests.

Abstract:Four photopolymerization initiators with D-π-D (D, donor; π, conjugation system) structure have been synthesized by solvent-free reaction and characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy, IR and elemental analysis. The one-photon and two-photon excited fluorescence have been investigated in different solvents. Abstract:In this study, three novel pyrrole chalcones (E-HP-1, E-HP-2, E-HP-3) with D-π-A structures were designed and characterized as Norrish II photoinitiators. The photoisomerization properties and photochemistry activity with common amine coinitiator TEOA of pyrrole chalcones were evaluated by spectroscopic methods and theoretical calculations. E-HP-1/TEOA and E-HP-3/TEOA exhibited the excellent initiating ability for blue LED free radical photopolymerization of acrylates via photopolymerization kinetics. Notably, the photo-equilibrium of E-HP-3 composed of both E-HP-3 and Z-HP-3 was proved to be inactive during the photopolymerization, resulting in high storage stability to sunlight. Combined with Z-HP-3 in the equilibrium completely converting back to E-HP-3 upon the LED@465 irradiation, photoactivity of initiating system Z-HP-3/E-HP-3/TEOA could be controlled by the excitation of LED@465 nm, which has potential practical applications in the area of photopolymerization.
