Abstract:Background: Oxytetracycline (OTC) is widely used and found in water threatening the ecosystem and human health. The electrochemically activated peroxymonosulfate (EA-PMS) procedure is a promising technique for eliminating pollutants from water. Methods: MnO2 modified with the polyelectrolyte layer and Au nanoparticles (MnO2@(PSS/PDDA)Au) as an anode were prepared to activate PMS for OTC degradation. Significant findings: It is found that 92% of OTC could be removed within 60 min during EA-PMS system. The effects of current density, electrolytes, initial pH, and PMS dosage on OTC degradation were investigated. Radical quenching experiments and EPR results demonstrated that SO4 center dot-, center dot OH and 1O2 were the dominant reaction species for OTC removal. As a result of LC-MS analysis, three possible pathways for OTC degradation were suggested. Moreover, T.E.S.T. calculations the flow cytometry testing were used to reveal the toxicity of the degradation process. This work provides a new strategy to degrade contaminants in the anode/EA-PMS systems.
