Abstract:Formaldehyde (HCHO) is highly toxic, but its low-temperature elimination is still a pressing challenge nowadays. In this work, we demonstrate an interface engineering strategy to boost the catalytic performance of the promising MnO 2 catalysts by coupling the CeO 2 promoters on the surface. The as-prepared CeO 2 –MnO 2 mixed-metal oxide (CeMn- x ( x = 0.1, 0.5, and 1)) catalysts with a Ce/Mn ratio of 0.5/10 possess excellent catalytic activity and a relatively low T 100 (the temperature for 100% HCHO conversion) of 95 °C is achieved. More oxygen vacancies, outstanding redox ability, and the strong interaction between CeO 2 and MnO 2 are responsible for the enhanced catalytic activity of CeMn. This study provides novel insight into the design of MnO x catalysts for the purification of HCHO at low temperatures.

Catalytic Ozonation of Formaldehyde with an Oxygen-Vacancy-Rich MnOx/γ-Al2O3 Catalyst at Room Temperature

Abstract:Formaldehyde (HCHO) is known as one of the important indoor organic pollutants. How to remove and decompose the low concentration of formaldehyde at room temperature is important for indoor environments. Catalytic ozonation is an efficient method to thoroughly remove HCHO at room temperature, with high efficiency and few byproducts. A series of MnOx/γ-Al2O3 catalysts were prepared in this work via the impregnation method and treated with different reagents (acid, alkali, and H2O2) to evaluate their catalytic activity for HCHO removal. The results showed that MnAl-II (acid treatment) performed well in activity tests, reaching a nearly 100% HCHO conversion at an O3/HCHO of 2.0 and attaining a CO2 selectivity of above 95% at an O3/HCHO of 3.0 at 30 °C, with almost no ozone residual existing. The larger specific surface area, abundant oxygen vacancies, and higher number of acid sites contributed to the excellent performance of MnAl-II. Stability and H2O resistance tests of MnAl-II were also conducted. To reveal the intermediate product formation and further investigate the reaction mechanism of HCHO ozonation, in-situ DRIFTS measurement was carried out combined with DFT calculations.
Highly dispersed Fe-Ce mixed oxide catalysts confined in mesochannels toward low-temperature oxidation of formaldehyde

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO) is regarded as a promising strategy to eliminate this indoor air pollutant. The design of a highly active and cost-effective catalyst is still pivotal to improve the performance for HCHO oxidation. Herein, we report an Fe-Ce-O solid solution catalyst supported on ordered mesoporous silica (SBA-15) prepared by simple two-step impregnation-calcination, achieving highly efficient HCHO elimination at a low temperature. This strategy brings about the formation of small solid solution nanoparticles (7-12.9 nm) with good dispersion in confined spaces. Meanwhile, the catalysts possess large surface areas (similar to 500 m(2)g(-1)) and pore volumes (0.5 cm(3)g(-1)) with a pore size of similar to 7.5 nm. The results show that Fe content and calcination temperature have great effects on the generation of oxygen vacancies in the catalyst, and further on the catalytic performance. The 20% FeOx-CeOx/SBA-15-350 catalyst displays superior catalytic activity with 65% and 94.9% conversion at 30 degrees C and 60 degrees C with a low concentration of HCHO (9.8 mu g L-1), respectively, comparable to that for many reported precious metal catalysts. The high ratio of Ce(3+)due to the formation of an Fe-Ce-O solid solution and highly dispersed active sites by the spatial confinement is favorable for more oxygen vacancy generation, which mainly contributes to the excellent performance. This work opens up an avenue to design highly efficient non-noble metal nanocatalysts for volatile organic compound (VOC) elimination.
Preparation of porous MnO2/CeO2 composite for the effective removal of formaldehyde from air

Abstract:A porous MnO2/CeO2 composite catalyst was prepared via the template method for the catalytic decomposition of formaldehyde (HCHO). The physical and chemical properties of the catalysts were intensively characterized via X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, temperature programmed reduction system and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The catalytic activity and stability for HCHO oxidation were measured via a fixed bed reactor, and the effects of physical and chemical properties of the catalysts on their catalytic performance were investigated. The results showed that the porous MnO2/CeO2 catalyst had abundant 3D pore structures, a large specific surface area, an amorphous structure, and an abundance of lattice oxygen species. Thus, the MnO2/CeO2 catalyst had high catalytic activity and stability for HCHO decomposition. This catalyst completely decomposed HCHO at 90 °C and maintained a 99% HCHO conversion rate over 72 h. The highly porous structure reduced the diffusion resistance in the reaction process and improved the efficiency of catalytic decomposition of HCHO. Doping with CeO2 improved the low temperature oxidation activity and catalytic stability of the porous MnO2/CeO2 catalyst. The porous MnO2/CeO2 composite was an effective agent for the removal of harmful HCHO from the air.

High Surface Area Au/CeO2 Catalysts for Low Temperature Formaldehyde Oxidation

Abstract:Gold catalysts supported on high surface area CeO2 were synthesized and tested for low temperature formaldehyde oxidation. It was found that the reactivity was greatly enhanced by increasing surface area of the support. Complete conversion of formaldehyde was obtained on a 3.0Au/CeO2-270 catalyst with a surface area of 270m2g−1 at 50°C, and a conversion of 92.3% was obtained at 37°C over the same catalyst, which made it promising for indoor formaldehyde removal. Detailed characterizations of the catalyst showed that the enhancement could be attributed to two factors. One was that Au species mainly in high oxidation states formed on the high surface area CeO2 resulted in a high degree of HCHO adsorption, as revealed by in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. The other was the high surface area CeO2 provided more oxygen vacancies by the nano effect and the formation of AuxCe1−xO2−δ solid solution as revealed by Raman spectroscopy, on which oxygen molecules could be transformed to active species for the reaction.
Low Cost and Highly Dispersed Ce/Na-ZSM-5 Catalysts Close to Atomic Dispersion for Enhancing Formaldehyde Oxidation.

Abstract:Formaldehyde oxidation at room temperature with low-cost catalysts is one of the main development directions of environmental governance. Herein, we developed a low-cost and superior performance highly dispersed Ce on Na-ZSM-5 (Ce/Na-ZSM-5) catalyst, which is close to atomic dispersion for indoor formaldehyde (HCHO) oxidation at low temperature. The highly dispersed catalyst that was similar to atomic dispersion was characterized by EXAFS and AC HAADF-STEM. The optimal Ce/Na-ZSM-5 displays high HCHO removal performance (95%, at room temperature), as well as 100 h stable testing (∼90% HCHO removal). In addition, a reasonable reaction mechanism of the HCHO catalytic oxidation is proposed based on the in situ DRIFT spectra and DFT calculation. This work provides a new way to design an efficient catalyst for the complete oxidation of formaldehyde.
MnOx–CeO2 Derived from Mn–Ce-MOFs with Highly Efficient Removal of Formaldehyde

Abstract:A series of MnOx–CeO2 with different molar ratios of Mn/Ce had been synthesized via in-situ pyrolysis of Mn–Ce-MOFs precursor. The as-prepared catalysts were applied for catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO) and also characterized by N2 adsorption–desorption, XRD, SEM, H2-TPR, O2-TPD and XPS. The result of catalytic test indicated that MnOx–CeO2 with a Mn/Ce molar ratio of 5:5 exhibited outstanding catalytic performance, which could achieve complete oxidation of HCHO at a temperature as low as 40 °C. Moreover, MnOx–CeO2 (5:5) possessed good stability and resistance to moisture. The HCHO conversion still retained over 99.0% as adding 5% H2O to the gas feed. The studies revealed that the close contact between Mn and Ce species in the Mn–Ce-MOFs precursor enhanced the interaction between MnOx and CeO2 through the calcination. The high specific surface area, easy low-temprature reducibility, abundant surface active oxygen and rich Mn4+ species were contributed to the excellent catalytic activity of MnOx–CeO2. Therefore, the MnOx–CeO2 catalyst possessed promising application prospect in removing HCHO at ambient temperature.

Abstract:MnOx-CeO2 catalysts prepared by either a two-step hydrothermal (HT) method or a deposition–precipitation (DP) method were evaluated for completely oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO). MnOx-CeO2(HT) exhibited an excellent HCHO oxidation activity. The reaction rate of MnOx-CeO2(HT) was almost six times that of MnOx-CeO2(DP) at 100 °C after excluding the effect of specific surface area. XPS study suggests that MnOx-CeO2(HT) catalyst possessed higher contents of Ce3+ and Mn4+ species than MnOx-CeO2(DP) catalyst due to the synergistic interaction between MnOx and CeO2 (Ce4+ + Mn3+ ↔ Ce3+ + Mn4+). The high Mn4+ content on the surface could provide sufficient HCHO oxidation active sites. The generation of Ce3+ species could lead to abundant chemisorbed oxygen species, which were further determined by in situ DRIFTs, EPR, O2-TPD and H2-TPR studies, and were mainly responsible for the excellent HCHO oxidation activity. DFT simulation also proved these results, which suggests that the Mn loading on CeO2 (110) plane could promote the generation of oxygen vacancy derived from Ce-O-Mn, while the (110) plane was one of the main exposure plane on the surface of Mn-Ce(HT) catalyst. This work provides a simple strategy to design highly active Mn-Ce catalysts for HCHO oxidation. We believe this non-precious catalyst will provide a cost-effective solution for catalytic oxidation of HCHO and other organic pollutants.

Abstract:A porous CuO/MnO2 catalyst was synthesized by a gas release-assisted method. Due to the participation of gases (H2O, NH3, CO2) released from ammonia and carbonate, the porous CuO/MnO2 with high surface and abundant aperture structure was obtained. Benefitting from the large specific surface area, high TOF and the proper atomic ratio of Cu and Mn on the catalyst surface, 0.20CuO/MnO2 (where 0.20 acted as the molar ratio of copper to manganese species) has the best catalytic performance, which can completely remove formaldehyde at 130 °C with 400 ppm HCHO concentration. Under 10 times higher than the upper limit of indoor formaldehyde (World Health Organization), the formaldehyde conversion of the porous CuO/MnO2 catalyst remains above 97% at 25 °C (the relative humidity RH ≤ 50%), which suggest it can almost completely remove the low concentration formaldehyde. The catalytic performance decays slowly within 6 h. Therefore, the porous CuO/MnO2 catalyst shows excellent low-concentration formaldehyde removal effect, long-term catalytic stability, suggesting it has a great potential for indoor formaldehyde removal under 0–50% relative humidity. This result not only provides an inexpensive, simple and efficient porous CuO/MnO2 material for formaldehyde removal indoor at room temperature but also provides a new strategy for the preparation of other porous material.

Abstract:Formaldehyde removal is vital to health, but the construction of high-performance non-precious metal catalysts still faces great challenges, in which increasing oxygen vacancies by dopant modification is an advanced strategy to enhance catalytic activity. In this work, a novel ε-MnO2/Mn2V2O7 composite catalyst with a synergistic effect was synthesized on the basis of a thermal decomposition strategy. Meanwhile, the precursor for the catalyst was synthesized from the reaction among CO2-storage material, Mn2+, and vanadate without additional template agents and surfactants. Aided by the catalyst, the degradation rate of a 20 mg/L 10 mL formaldehyde (HCHO) solution can reach 72.0% and maintain above 67% after 5 cycles at 30 °C for 1 h. Subsequently, the as-obtained synergistic catalytic mechanism showed that the high-valent V5+ may partially replace Mn4+ in the MnO2 framework, promoting the formation of enriched oxygen vacancies (V4+-□-Mn3+) on the surface of the composite catalyst via the redox coupling of Mn4+/Mn3+ and V5+/V4+. This leads to an increase in adsorbed oxygen, significantly improving the degradation performance of HCHO. This work provides a novel and advanced strategy for dopant modification to develop superior non-precious metal catalysts.

Abstract:Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a common indoor organic pollutant, which causes serious damage to people's health. The removal of formaldehyde is a difficult problem that human beings have to face in healthy life. MOF derivatives are a research hotspot in the field of catalysis in recent years. In this paper, a UiO-66 derived ZrO2 was selected for the study of formaldehyde degradation. Combining ZrO2 and g-C3N4 through multiple calcinations, a heterostructure was successfully constructed, which enabled the catalyst to absorb visible light. Then supported Ag by photoreduction can further improve the dispersibility and visible light absorption ability of the catalyst. When the addition amount of ZrO2 is 300 mg, Ag@g-C3N4/ZrO2-300 degrades 81.3 % of formaldehyde after 3 h of illumination and exhibits excellent stability. This work provides a certain reference value for the application of MOF and its derivatives in the field of formaldehyde degradation.

Oxygen vacancy-rich K-Mn3O4@CeO2 catalyst for efficient oxidation degradation of formaldehyde at near room temperature

Abstract:Synthesis of catalysts with high catalytic degradation activity for formaldehyde (HCHO) at room temperature is highly desirable for indoor air quality control. Herein, a novel K-Mn3O4@CeO2 catalyst with excellent catalytic oxidation activity toward HCHO at near room temperature was reported. In particular, the K addition in K-Mn3O4@CeO2 considerably enhanced the oxidation activity, and importantly, 99.3 % conversion of 10 mL of a 40 mg/L HCHO solution at 30 °C for 14 h was achieved, with simultaneous strong cycling stability. Moreover, the addition of K species considerably influenced the chemical valence state of Mn from +4 (ε-MnO2) to +8/3 (Mn3O4) on the surface of CeO2, which obviously changed the tunnel structure and the number of oxygen vacancies. One part of K species is uniformly dispersed on K-Mn3O4@CeO2, and the other part exists in the tunnel structure of Mn3O4@CeO2, which is mainly used to balance the negative charge of the tunnel and prevent collapse of the structure, providing enough active sites for the catalytic oxidation of HCHO. We observed a phase transition from tunneled KMnO2 to Mn3O4 to tunneled MnO2 with the decreasing K+ content, in which K-Mn3O4@CeO2 exhibited higher HCHO oxidation activity. In addition, K-Mn3O4@CeO2 exhibited lower oxygen vacancy formation and HCHO adsorption energies in aqueous solution based on density functional theory calculations. This is because the K species provide more active oxygen species and richer oxygen vacancies on the surface of K-Mn3O4@CeO2, promote the mobility of lattice oxygen and the room-temperature reduction properties of oxygen species, and enhance the ability of the catalyst to replenish the consumed oxygen species. Finally, a possible HCHO catalytic oxidation pathway on the surface of K-Mn3O4@CeO2 catalyst is proposed.

Abstract:Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a major environmental pollutant. The Mn-doped CeO2 catalyst has good catalytic performance for the oxidation of HCHO. The catalytic activity can be effectively tuned by changing the amount of metal doping. In this paper, density functional theory combined with micro-kinetic analysis are employed to provide a molecular level understanding to such effects. The CeO2(111) surface with different Mn doping content was used to study the oxidation mechanism of HCHO. Highly dispersed Mn doped ceria was dominant at low content of Mn. While with the increase of Mn doping, Mn begins to accumulate on the CeO2(111) surface. It is not conducive to the breaking of C-H bonds, the generation of oxygen vacancies and the adsorption of active oxygen species. Therefore, the low-content Mn-doped CeO2 catalyst has higher catalytic oxidation activity of HCHO. The present contribution is useful for further optimization of Mn-CeO2 catalysts towards HCHO oxidation.

Abstract:The MnCo3MOx (M = Ce,La,Pr) composite catalysts were synthesized by co-precipitation method and tested for formaldehyde removal and carbon dioxide selectivity. The influence of the types of rare earth elements and molar ratio of Mn/Co/M was investigated. The addition of cerium improves the catalytic activity of MnCo3Ox. The catalyst could efficiently eliminate HCHO into CO2 and H2O when the molar ratio of Mn/Co/Ce was 1/3/7.96% HCHO conversion was achieved at ambient temperature. The prepared samples were characterized by XRD, BET, H-2-TPR and XPS techniques to explain the improvement of catalytic activity. The results show that a stable solid solution can be formed between CeO2 and MnCo3Ox, and the strong interaction promotes the reaction. The addition of Ce increases the specific surface area of the catalyst and enhances the reduction of MnCo3Ox and surface active oxygen, thereby increasing the catalytic activity for removing HCHO. This study provides a reference for the purification of indoor formaldehyde.

Abstract:Formaldehyde (HCHO) is carcinogenic and teratogenic, and is therefore a serious danger to human health. It also adversely affects air quality. Catalytic oxidation is an efficient technique for removing HCHO. The development of highly efficient and stable catalysts that can completely convert HCHO at low temperatures, even room temperature, is important. Supported Pt and Pd catalysts can completely convert HCHO at room temperature, but their industrial applications are limited because they are expensive. The catalytic activities in HCHO oxidation of transition-metal oxide catalysts such as manganese and cobalt oxides with unusual morphologies are better than those of traditional MnO2, Co3O4, or other metal oxides. This is attributed to their specific structures, high specific surface areas, and other factors such as active phase, reducibility, and amount of surface active oxygens. Such catalysts with various morphologies have great potential and can also be used as catalyst supports. The loading of relatively cheap Ag or Au on transition-metal oxides with special morphologies potentially improves the catalytic activity in HCHO removal at room temperature. The preparation and development of new nanocatalysts with various morphologies and structures is important for HCHO removal. In this paper, research progress on precious-metal and transition-metal oxide catalyst systems for HCHO oxidation is reviewed; topics such as oxidation properties, structure–activity relationships, and factors influencing the catalytic activity and reaction mechanism are discussed. Future prospects and directions for the development of such catalysts are also covered.

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation at room temperature is a promising alternative approach for indoor formaldehyde elimination. However, the development of non-precious metal room temperature catalysts is still highly challenging. In this study, manganese-cerium composite oxides (MC) were developed and optimized. The removal performance of low concentrations of formaldehyde at room temperature was comprehensively evaluated. Formaldehyde removal was achieved with MC under dark at a level comparable to that of the commercial P25 catalyst. The removal efficiency of 90.9% in 24 h at room temperature was obtained for the initial formaldehyde concentration of 1.2 ± 0.1 ppm. Using electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, free radicals were confirmed to play a key role in formaldehyde degradation on MC. Formate was detected as the main intermediate product by in situ DRIFTs, and the mechanism of MC catalytic oxidation at room temperature was deduced.

Abstract:The development of highly efficient catalysts for room-temperature formaldehyde (HCHO) oxidation is of great interest for indoor air purification. In this work, it was found that the single-atom Pt1/CeO2 catalyst exhibits a remarkable activity with complete removal of HCHO even at 288 K. Combining density functional theory calculations and in situ DRIFTS experiments, it was revealed that the active OlatticeH site generated on CeO2 in the vicinity of Pt2+ via steam treatment plays a key role in the oxidation of HCHO to formate and its further oxidation to CO2. Such involvement of hydroxyls is fundamentally different from that of cofeeding water which dissociates on metal oxide and catalyzes the acid-base-related chemistry. This study provides an important implication for the design and synthesis of supported Pt catalysts with atom efficiency for a very important practical application-room-temperature HCHO oxidation.
Construction of α-MnO2/g-C3N4 Z-scheme heterojunction for photothermal synergistic catalytic decomposition of formaldehyde

Abstract:Formaldehyde (HCHO), as the most common indoor air pollutant, undoubtedly poses a huge threat to people's health. It is of practical importance to achieve complete decomposition of HCHO to harmless CO2 at room temperature. Herein, α-MnO2/g-C3N4 Z-scheme heterojunction was constructed through the in-situ growth of α-MnO2 nanowires on the surface of g-C3N4 nanosheets. Owing to the construction of Z-scheme heterojunction, α-MnO2/g-C3N4 composite exhibits excellent photothermal catalytic activity, achieving complete mineralization of HCHO with the illumination of 191 mW/cm2 solar-light at GHSV of 180 L/gcat·h. Particularly, even under one sun and visible light radiation, the α-MnO2/g-C3N4 composite can still maintain 60% and 68% HCHO conversion, respectively. The formation of α-MnO2/g-C3N4 Z-scheme heterojunction not only effectively inhibits the photogenerated electron-hole pairs recombination, but also overcomes the band defects of the individual component. Furthermore, the mechanism of the photothermal catalysis of α-MnO2/g-C3N4 composite was discovered to be thermal-assisted photocatalytic process rather than solar-light driven thermalcatalysis. On the one hand, the thermal energy generated from light radiation can accelerate the migration of photo-generated carriers and improve the separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons from vacancies; on the other hand, it can decrease the activation energy of lattice oxygen and produce more surface-active oxygen species. This work provides cost-effective strategies and suggestions for decomposing HCHO and other VOCs in indoor air at room temperature.

Abstract:Formaldehyde (HCHO) has been one of the major air pollutants, and removing it effectively at room temperature has proven to be a big challenge. In this paper, the Ag/Mn/CeO 2 catalyst for catalytic oxidation of low-concentration HCHO at room temperature was prepared by the hydrothermal-calcination method. The removal performance of the Ag/Mn/CeO 2 catalyst for HCHO was systematically studied, and its surface chemical properties and microstructure were analyzed. The incorporation of Ag did not change the mesoporous structure of the Mn/CeO 2 catalyst but reduced the pore size and specific surface area. The Ag species included metallic Ag as the main component and part of Ag + . The well-dispersed Ag species on the catalyst provided sufficient active sites for the catalytic oxidation of HCHO. More Ag active sites, more lattice defects and oxygen vacancies generated from the interaction of Ag with Mn/CeO 2 . Precisely because of this, Ag/Mn/CeO 2 catalyst exhibited high catalytic activity for HCHO at room temperature with a removal efficiency of 96.76% within 22 h, which was 22.91% higher than that of Mn/CeO 2 catalyst. Moreover, the Ag/Mn/CeO 2 catalyst showed good cycle stability, and the removal efficiency still reached 85.77% after five cycles. Therefore, the as-prepared catalyst is an effective and sustainable material that can be used to remove HCHO from actual indoor polluted air. This paper provides ideas for the research and development of efficient catalysts.
