Abstract:Single molecule magnets (SMMs) containing dysprosium‐phosphorus bonding are rare due to great challenges in constructing the bonding between hard lanthanide ions and soft phosphorus donors. Here we successfully isolated a novel mononuclear bis‐Cp* dysprosium compound, Cp*2Dy[η‐CH(PPh2)2]·C7H8 (1‐Dy), via the salt metathesis reactions of Cp*2Dy(BPh4) and K[(PPh2)2CH] in THF (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl). The magnetic investigations indicate its strong SMM behavior evidenced by the open magnetic hysteresis loops below 6 K and the high effective barrier of 300 cm‐1. This could be ascribed to weak dative DyIII‐P bonds at equatorial sites in such [Cp2DyX]‐type (X = auxiliary donors) complexes.

From Geometric to Charge-Distribution Symmetry: Deeper Insights into Lifting the Performance of Dysprosium Single-Ion Magnets

Abstract:Crystal-field symmetry of lanthanide ions plays a critical role in suppressing quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) in single-molecule magnets (SMMs), but high-performance SMM design and modulation remain challenging only in view of the geometric symmetry of the first coordination sphere. Herein, two bis(semicarbazone)/bis(thiosemicarbazone)dysprosium single-ion magnets with pentagonal bipyramid geometry were reported, and bis(thiosemicarbazone)lanthanide complexes have never been reported to the best of our knowledge. They served as good archetypes to study the magneto-structural relationships based on the charge distribution The complex with more ideal geometric symmetry displays fast zero-field QTM with negligible "effective barrier", owing to the defective charge distribution. By modulating the transverse crystal field via the replacement of the O sites with the less charged and larger radius S atoms, it results in lower geometric but higher charge-distribution symmetry, giving rise to the significant suppression of QTM and the enhancement of reversal barrier up to ca. 1,000 K. These results demonstrate that the charge-distribution symmetry can be chemically tailored by modification of the crystal field, which is essential for designing high-performance SMMs.

Abstract:We report a monometallic dysprosium complex, [Dy((OBu)-Bu-t)(2)(py)(5)][BPh4] (5), that shows the largest effective energy barrier to magnetic relaxation of U-eff=1815(1)K. The massive magnetic anisotropy is due to bis-trans-disposed tert-butoxide ligands with weak equatorial pyridine donors, approaching proposed schemes for high-temperature single-molecule magnets (SMMs). The blocking temperature, T-B, is 14K, defined by zero-field-cooled magnetization experiments, and is the largest for any monometallic complex and equal with the current record for [Tb2N2{N(SiMe3)(2)}(4)(THF)(2)].

Abstract:Here we use a pseudoallyl ligand, N,N′-chelating amidinate (Am), together with pentamethylcyclopentadienyl (Cp*) to give two dysprosium(III) single-molecule magnets (SMMs): [{(AmiPr)DyCp*(μ-Cl)}2] and [AmdippDyCp*(Cl)(μ-Cl)Li(THF)3] with distinct energy barriers (U eff) of 97 and 472 K, respectively. The latter U eff value is similar to the homoleptic Cp*-based Dy-SMM.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary Molecules with long preserved magnetic moments are perceived as the smallest units for storing bytes, which could bring a new revolution for information technology. However, the rational design of such molecules remains challenging. Here two rigid adamantanol ligand based dysprosium(III) complexes ([Dy(1‐AdO) 2 (py) 5 ]BPh 4 ‐ 1 and [Dy(2‐AdO) 2 (py) 5 ]BPh 4 ‐ 2) with pentagonal‐bipyramidal coordination geometry and local D 5h symmetry were successfully prepared, which display excellent single‐molecule magnet (SMM) behavior ( U eff ≈ 1835 K, T B ZFC ≈ 24 K, T B 100s ≈ 17 K and T B H = 23 K for 1; U eff ≈ 1756 K, T B ZFC ≈ 20 K, T B 100s ≈ 16 K and T B H = 23 K for 2) due to the much weakened vibration in low energy regimes. Remarkably, the large energy barriers and high blocking temperatures for these two complexes in solid states are well preserved in solution. This is never observed in previous studies of SMMs, indicating that the adamantanol is rigid and can be introduced to make the composed molecules stable enough to maintain the solid state magnetic property in solution.

Abstract:The isolation of formally two-coordinate lanthanide (Ln) complexes is synthetically challenging, due to predominantly ionic Ln bonding regimes favoring high coordination numbers. In 2014 some of us predicted that a near-linear dysprosium bis(amide) cation [Dy{N(SiiPr3)2}2]+ could provide a single-molecule magnet (SMM) with an energy barrier to magnetic reversal (Ueff) of up to 2600 K, a threefold increase of the record Ueff for a Dy SMM at the time; this work showed a potential route to SMMs that can provide high-density data storage at higher temperatures. However, synthetic routes to a Dy complex containing only two monodentate ligands have not previously been realized. Here we report the synthesis of the target bent dysprosium bis(amide) complex, [Dy{N(SiiPr3)2}2][Al{OC(CF3)3}4] (1-Dy), together with the diamagnetic yttrium analog. We find Ueff = 924(17) K for 1-Dy, which is much lower than the predicted values for idealized linear two-coordinate Dy(III) cations. Ab initio calculations of the static electronic structure disagree with the experimentally-determined height of the U¬eff barrier, thus magnetic relaxation is faster than expected based on magnetic anisotropy alone. We propose that this is due to enhanced spin-phonon coupling arising from the flexibility of the Dy coordination sphere, in accord with ligand vibrations being of equal importance to magnetic anisotropy in the design of high-temperature SMMs.

Abstract:Dysprosium single-molecule magnets (SMMs) with two mutually trans- anionic ligands have shown large crystal field (CF) splitting, giving record effective energy barriers to magnetic reversal (Ueff) and hysteresis temperatures (TH). However, these complexes tend to be bent, imposing a transverse field that reduces the purity of the mJ projections of the CF states and promotes magnetic relaxation. A complex with only one anionic ligand could have more pure CF states, and thus high Ueff and TH. Here we report the first example of an SMM with this topology, [Dy(C5Me5)(FPh)6][{Al[OC(CF3)3]3}2(µ-F)]2 (1-Dy), which exhibits Ueff = 564(33) cm–1 and TH = 14 K at sweep rates of 22 Oe s–1; the C5Me5 ligand imposes a strong axial CF and the five equatorially-bound neutral fluorobenzenes present only weak transverse interactions. We show that complexes such as 1-Dy can be useful starting materials for heteroleptic Ln complexes as the fluorobenzenes are easily displaced.

Abstract:Symmetryandaxialityarethought tobeguides toward the pursuit of high energy barrier and blocking temperature for thedysprosium(III) (Dy-III) single-molecule magnets (SMMs). The Dy-III complexeswith low coordination numbers are intended to satisfy axial symmetry. Here, we report four four-coordinate Dy-III SMMs based on bis(arylamido) dysprosium building block {Dy (N-RR')(2)(mu-Cl)(2)K}(N-RR'={N(SiMe3)(C6H3'Pr-2-2,6)}(-)), with two strong Dy-N and twoweak Dy-Cl bonds. Through fine-tuning of axial anisotropy, the SMM with the largest N-Dy-N angle of 139.24(15)degrees displayed magnetic hysteresis with a coercive field (H-c) of 18.6 kOe at 2 K, which kept opening up to 35 K. Alternating current susceptibility measurement showed that the relaxation energy barrier reached as high as 1578 K, which is among the highest reported Dy-III SMMs. Ab initio calculations revealed strong anisotropy and crystal-field axiality of the compound, despite the low symmetry, and provided a synthetically workable approach to construct high-performance SMMs useful in applications such as digital processing, transport electronics, quantumcomputing, and ultra-high-density data storage.

Abstract:A mononuclar six-coordinate dysprosium complex was synthesized and structurally and magnetically characterized. X-ray structural analyses show trigonalprismatic coordination geometry of the Din center. Slow relaxation of magnetization in the absence of a direct current field and magnetic hysteresis up to 3.0 K could be observed, indicating its single-ion-magnet behavior. Arrhenius fitting and ab initio calculations suggest that the magnetic relaxation process may not occur through the Orbach process at high temperatures under the experimental conditions.

However, these complexes tend to be bent, imposing a transverse field that reduces the purity of the m J projections of the CF states and promotes magnetic relaxation. A complex with only one charge-dense anionic ligand could have more pure CF states, and thus high U eff and T H . Here we report an SMM with this topology, a half-sandwich Dy( III ) complex [Dy(Cp*)(FPh) 6 ][{Al[OC(CF 3 ) 3 ] 3 } 2 (μ-F)] 2 ( 1-Dy ; Cp* = C 5 Me 5 ), and its Y( III ) analogue 1-Y ; 1-Dy exhibits U eff = 545(30) cm −1 and T H = 14 K at sweep rates of 22 Oe s −1 . The Cp* ligand imposes a strong axial CF, which is assisted by one axial fluorobenzene; the five equatorially-bound neutral fluorobenzenes present only weak transverse interactions to give a pseudo -pentagonal bipyramidal geometry. The salt metathesis reaction of 1-Y with KCp′′′ (Cp′′′ = {C 5 H 2 (SiMe 3 ) 3 -1,2,4}) gave the sandwich complex [Y(Cp′′′)(Cp*)(FPh) 2 ][{Al[OC(CF 3 ) 3 ] 3 } 2 (μ-F)] ( 4-Y ), showing that the fluorobenzenes of 1-Y are easily displaced. We envisage that these methodologies could be adapted in future to prepare high-performance axial Dy SMMs with ligands that are more sterically demanding than Cp*.

Abstract:A series of three β-diketone mononuclear dysprosium complexes, namely, Dy(TFI)3(H2O)2 (1), Dy(TFI)3(bpy) (2), and [Dy(TFI)3(Phen)]·0.02CHCl3 (3) (TFI = 2-(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl)-1-indone, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) have been designed and synthesized. Crystal structure analysis reveals that complexes 1-3 have haveisomorphic structures in which the central Dy(III) ion is eight-coordinated by six oxygen atoms from three TFI ligands and two O/N atoms from auxiliary ligands, forming a distorted bicapped trigonal prismatic geometry for 1, a distorted dodecahedral geometry for 2, and a distorted square antiprismatic geometry for 3, respectively. Magnetic studies indicate that complex 2 with D(2d) symmetry and 3 with D(4d) symmetry exhibit slow magnetic relaxation with barrier heights (U(eff)/k(B)) of 48.8 K for 2 and 57.9 K for 3. Strikingly, the relaxation time (τ) of 0.0258 s for 3 is about 20 times that for 2, which is presumably associated with larger rotation of the SAP surroundings for 3. Further, complexes 2 and 3 exhibit essential magnetic hysteresis loops at 1.8 K. These extend the recent reports of the single-ion magnets (SIMs) of β-diketone mononuclear dysprosium complexes.

Abstract:A new dysprosium(III) phosphonate dimer {Dy(notpH(4))(NO3)(H2O)}(2)8H(2)O (1) [notpH(6)=1,4,7-triazacyclononane-1,4,7-triyl-tris(methylenephosphonic acid)] that contains two equivalent Dy(III)ions with a three-capped trigonal prism environment is reported. Complex 1 can be transformed into {Dy(notpH(4))(NO3)(H2O)}(2) (2) in a reversible manner by desorption and absorption of solvent water at ambient temperature. This process is accompanied by a large dielectric response. Magnetic studies reveal that both 1 and 2 show thermally activated magnetization relaxation as expected for single-molecule magnets. Moreover, the magnetic dynamics of the two compounds can be manipulated by controlling the number of solvent molecules at room temperature.
