Abstract:Carbon wrapped iron catalysts have been intensively studied in recent years to achive efficiently syngas conversion into high-value-added chemicals. A Fe 3 C@C catalyst with defect-rich graphite shell exhibits a C 5+ selectivity of 70.1% and CH 4 selectivity of 9.0% at CO conversion of 55.2%, which can be attributed to the enhanced reactant adsorption and anti-oxidation of Fe 3 C during FTS.

Abstract:The direct synthesis of light olefins from syngas via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reaction is a promising technology for direct synthesis of olefins from syngas. The key is to improve the selectivity of light olefins through the regulation of product distribution. In this work, the hydrophobic Fe@Si catalyst was prepared by room temperature solid state methodStober-silylation method, and then the catalyst was combined with SAPO-34 molecular sieves with different contents to prepare Fe@Si/S-34 composite catalysts. The effects of SAPO-34 molecular sieve content on the physicochemical properties of the catalysts were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, N-2 adsorption-desorption, NH3 temperature programmed desorption and water contact angle measurement. The results showed that the content of SAPO-34 molecular sieve has significant influence on the surface area, pore volume, acidity and hydrophobicity of the catalysts. With the increase of SAPO-34 molecular sieve content, the specific surface area and total pore volume of the catalyst increased, the weak acid and medium-strong acid sites increased, and the hydrophobicity weakened. The catalytic performance evaluation results showed that the Fe@Si/S-34 composite catalyst decomposed C5+ hydrocarbons into light hydrocarbons, significantly reduced the selectivity of C5+ products and increased the selectivity of C2 similar to C4 hydrocarbons. Appropriate SAPO-34 molecular sieve could significantly improve the selectivity of C2 similar to C-4 olefins. When the mass ratio of Fe@Si catalyst to SAPO-34 is 2, the C-2 similar to C-4 olefin selectivity of Fe@Si/S-34 catalyst is the highest, the conversion of CO is 80.0%, the selectivity of CO2 in the product is 8.9%, and the selectivity of C-2 similar to C-4 olefins is 31.1%. In this study, the hydrophobicity of Fe@Si catalyst and the cracking activity of SAPO-34 molecular sieve for C5+ hydrocarbon were coupled together to inhibit the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction, reduce the CO2 selectivity and obtain higher C-2 similar to C-4 olefin selectivity, which provided a new strategy for the development of catalysts for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis to olefins.

Abstract:Fe/AC(Activated charcoal) catalysts were prepared by using impregnation method. The catalytic performance of catalysts at various content of iron, potassium promoters and different charcoals were investigated in an integral fixed-bed reactor. The experimental results show that Fe/CC(Coco carbon) catalyst has high CO conversion and C+_5 selectivity for F-T synthesis reaction. The effect of temperature, pressure, and space velocity on F-T synthesis reaction was studied on Fe/CC catalyst. The ~appropriate condition is medium temperature, medium pressure and low space velocity. It is suitable for liquid fuel synthesis from syngas under the condition of 300~350 ~°C 、2.5 MPa and 1 000 h~-1 .

Abstract:Highly dispersed Co nanoparticles with proper interaction with mesoporous support are benefit for the suppression of self-aggregation, which enhances its Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTs) activity. However, construct such Co based supported catalysts with high activity and stability in FTs by conventional mesoporous support, especially the common used mesoporous SiO2, has proven challenging due to their undesirable hydrothermal stability and poor reducibility. Herein, we developed a unique core@double-shell Co@SiO2@C structure with optimized interface of the mesoporous catalyst by introducing graphitic carbon layer which can weaken the interaction between metallic Co and silica. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images, together with Nitrogen adsorption-desorption characterization result, proved the well-defined core@double-shell structure of graphitic carbon modified catalyst. The Co@SiO2@C-2 material produced after optimizing the calcination temperature to 600°C process large surface area and pore volume, and show higher CO conversion (62.2%) and C5+ selectivity (62.2%) than Co3O4@SiO2 in a period of 100h. The significant improvement in the FTS performance of Co@SiO2@C is not only attributed to a good synergistic effect by a combination of the Co dispersion and reducibility. The unique core@double-shell structure with graphitic carbon modified interior pore-walls also contributes to the formation of heavy hydrocarbon, as well as the protecting with the metallic Co particles away from oxidation and aggregation.

Abstract:Adjusting the hydrocarbon product distribution is the focus of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) reaction. A novel FeMn@C core-shell catalyst with bimetallic FeMn nanoparticles encapsulated in a carbon shell was synthesized by a one-step solvothermal method. In the FTS reaction, this catalyst exhibited higher catalytic activity and C-5(+) hydrocarbons (especially for 63.3% C(5-1)2 gasoline range products) selectivity as well as excellent stability compared to the Fe@C or traditional FeMn/SiO2 catalyst. The superior activity could be attributed to the enrichment of Fe elements at the margin stemming from the replacement of central Mn species, promoting the formation of more active iron carbides by combining with the surrounding carbonaceous matter. Particularly, the "confinement effect" of the core-shell structure for FeMn@C facilitated the polymerization of light olefins produced by Mn-modified Fe nanoparticles, resulting in more heavy hydrocarbons and enhanced stability. This work showed new insights to develop a potential FTS catalyst candidate.

Abstract:Producing lower olefins via iron-based Fischer-Tropsch synthesis without intermediate process has received increasing interests. Herein, effects of support modification on FTO performance of CNT supported Fe catalysts are comparatively investigated. Employing the defect-rich CNT as the catalyst support compared to the pristine CNT support is found to exhibit the shorter induction period and higher iron time yield (FTY). The promotional effects of K and Mn promoters on the FTO performance are subsequently revealed on the defect-rich CNT supported Fe catalysts. Both promoters are observed to suppress the formation of undesirable methane and to enhance the selectivity to desirable lower olefins. Moreover, the introduction of the Mn promoter facilitates the dispersion of iron particles and thus shows higher FTY, and it also gives rise to much higher catalyst stability than the K promoter. The insights reported here could guide the design and optimization of promoted Fe/C FTO catalysts.

Abstract:Mesoporous silica-encapsulated iron materials contribute to the suppression of self-aggregation and thereby enhances the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis activity. However, constructing Fe-based supported catalysts with high activity and selectivity in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis to lower olefins (FTO) by a conventional mesoporous silica support has been proven challenging due to its low hydrothermal stability and low reducibility. Herein, we developed a core-shell Fe@SiO2-GC structure with an optimized interface of the catalyst by introducing graphitic carbon (GC) that weakened the Fe-SiO2 interaction. Transmission electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption-desorption characterization proved GC-modified catalysts had well-defined core-shell structures. The Fe@SiO2-GC-2 containing the optimal GC content had the largest surface area and pore volume, and outperformed Fe2O3@SiO2 in terms of CO conversion (60.1%) and C2-C4 olefin selectivity (40.7%) within 100 h. The significant improvement of FTO performance was attributed to the rigid porous framework of GC, which allowed free access of syngas and inhibited mesoporous channel collapse during FTO, so the catalytic activity and stability were improved by the synergism between higher Fe dispersion and reducibility. Moreover, the narrow well-defined mesoporous channel also exerted a modest spatial restriction effect, which inhibited the formation of long-chain hydrocarbon and tailored the product distribution toward lower distillate, thus improving the selectivity toward C2-C4.
Defect-Driven Efficient Selective CO2 Hydrogenation with Mo-Based Clusters

Abstract:Synthetic fuels produced from CO2 show promise in combating climate change. The reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction is the key to opening the CO2 molecule, and CO serves as a versatile intermediate for creating various hydrocarbons. Mo-based catalysts are of great interest for RWGS reactions featured for their stability and strong metal-oxygen interactions. Our study identified Mo defects as the intrinsic origin of the high activity of cluster Mo2C for CO2-selective hydrogenation. Specifically, we found that defected Mo2C clusters supported on nitrogen-doped graphene exhibited exceptional catalytic performance, attaining a reaction rate of 6.3 gCO/gcat/h at 400 °C with over 99% CO selectivity and good stability. Such a catalyst outperformed other Mo-based catalysts and noble metal-based catalysts in terms of facile dissociation of CO2, highly selective hydrogenation, and nonbarrier liberation of CO. Our study revealed that as a potential descriptor, the atomic magnetism linearly correlates to the liberation capacity of CO, and Mo defects facilitated product desorption by reducing the magnetization of the adsorption site. On the other hand, the defects were effective in neutralizing the negative charges of surface hydrogen, which is crucial for selective hydrogenation. Finally, we have successfully demonstrated that the combination of a carbon support and the carbonization process synergistically serves as a feasible strategy for creating rich Mo defects, and biochar can be a low-cost alternative option for large-scale applications.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of greenhouse CO2 into valuable chemicals or fuels is highly attractive in terms of sustainable development. The chemical inertness of CO2 molecules and high kinetic barriers for C–C propagation hinder its efficient utilization. Here we report a bifunctional catalyst composed of K-Fe/C and zeolite that efficiently produced liquid fuels via simply tuning the microenvironment properties of ZSM-5 zeolite. The catalysts are characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), temperature programmed desorption (NH3-TPD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). K-Fe/C catalyst is mainly responsible for the formation of olefins, while ZSM-5 catalyst is mainly responsible for olefin secondary reaction, such as aromatization, isomerization, and cracking reaction. Surface acid properties of ZSM-5 can be well regulated through different ion-exchange strategies (NH4+, K+, Na+, Mg2+, Cu2+, Cs2+, La3+, Ce2+, Mn2+), in which the strong surface acid properties of ZSM-5 are eliminated with the utilization of K+-ion exchange strategy and then it presents a high C5+ selectivity by suppressing the light saturated hydrocarbons formation. This work provides new insights or facile catalyst treatment for the efficient production of liquid fuels from CO2 hydrogenation via tuning surface microenvironment properties of ZSM-5 zeolite.

Abstract:Fabrication of χ-Fe5C2 active phase is important for efficient iron-based Fischer-Tropsch synthesis but faces a challenge in the controllable synthesis of high purity phase. Herein, we report selective synthesis of χ-Fe5C2 catalysts by interfering surface reactions during thermal treatment. In-situ analyses provided insight into the mechanism of the structure evolution of iron-based catalysts under varied thermal treatment atmospheres and conditions. The atmosphere of 64 %H2/32 %CO/4 %Ar yields a compromise among the competitive oxygen removal, carbon permeation, hydrogenation and carbon deposition reactions, thus selectively forming high-purity χ-Fe5C2. Such catalyst shows high CO conversion of 96 %, selectivity to C5+ hydrocarbons of 40 % and light olefins of 30 %, and good stability under mild conditions (250 °C, 2.0 MPa). A plausible catalyst structure-performance relation is finally established by combining kinetics analysis with multiple characterization techniques. The simultaneously enhanced activity and selectivity are related to the more terrace sites of χ-Fe5C2, and the pre-formed carbon coating during pretreatment process improves catalyst stability.

Abstract:Here, we report a Na-promoted FeCu-based catalyst with excellent liquid hydrocarbon selectivity and catalytic activity. The physiochemical properties of the catalysts were comprehensively characterized by various characterization techniques. The characterization results indicate that the catalytic performance of the catalysts was closely related to the nature of the metal promoters. The Na-AlFeCu possessed the highest CO2 conversion due to enhanced CO2 adsorption of the catalysts by the introduction of Al species. The introduction of excess Mg promoter led to a strong methanation activity of the catalyst. Mn and Ga promoters exhibited high selectivity for light hydrocarbons due to their inhibition of iron carbides generation, resulting in a lack of chain growth capacity. The Na-ZnFeCu catalyst exhibited the optimal C5+ yield, owing to the fact that the Zn promoter improved the catalytic activity and liquid hydrocarbon selectivity by modulating the surface CO2 adsorption and carbide content. Carbon dioxide (CO2) hydrogenation to liquid fuel is considered a method for the utilization and conversion of CO2, whereas satisfactory activity and selectivity remains a challenge. This method provides a new idea for the catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 and from there the preparation of high-value-added products.

Abstract:This study utilizes a two-stage method to prepare high-performance Fe 3 C catalysts through the continuous reduction of Fe 2 O 3 and carburization of metallic iron. Firstly, metal iron with well-developed pores and high specific surface area is obtained through reduction, and then the target product Fe 3 C is synthesized through the carburization effect of CH 4 . The performance analysis of the catalyst shows that it has a strong gas adsorption capacity and well-developed pores and its structural and surface chemical properties have been analyzed using XRD, TEM, and XPS methods. The carbon deposition reaction of CH 4 and CO on Fe 3 C surface is characterized by combining Reactive force field (ReaxFF) and experimental methods, and the degree of ordering of the products has been measured which indicates that CH 4 is more likely to generate carbon black with a lower degree of ordering on the surface, while CO tends to generate graphite with a higher degree of ordering.

Abstract:Direct synthesis of liquid fuels (C 5+ hydrocarbons) through CO 2 hydrogenation has attracted considerable interest. However, it is plagued by high selectivity of C1 by-products (CO and CH 4 ) and low reaction activity. Herein, we report that Na-decorated Fe catalysts promoted by combination of Mg and Mn and investigate their synergistic effect in the catalytic CO 2 hydrogenation reaction. The optimized amounts of promoters result in a significant improvement in the catalytic performance of NaFe 2 O 3 . The CO 2 conversion increases by 1.6-fold, while the total selectivity of CO and CH 4 is suppressed to below 21.3 %. The characteristic results reveal the enhanced surface alkalinity and electron transfer favor CO 2 adsorption and tuned the local H/C ratio in the vicinity of iron species, thus remarkably promoting the carbon chain growth and limiting the production of C1 products. This study offers a promising approach to modulating the metal electronic environment and improving carbon efficiency for CO 2 hydrogenation reactions.

Abstract:An experimental study of the improved Fischer-Tropsch synthesis was conducted over a series of Ni-promoted Co/CNT catalysts to investigate the influence of Ni content on the synthesis of liquid hydrocarbon fuel (C-5-C-20). The catalysts were prepared using the impregnation method and were systematically characterized by N-2 physisorption studies, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction. The Ni promoter played a significant role in product distribution. The long-chain hydrocarbons were effectively hydrocracked because of the activity of Ni in C-C bond cleavage. A proper degree of Ni promotion could maximize the production of liquid hydrocarbon fuel. The highest selectivity for liquid hydrocarbon fuel (61.6%) and a CO conversion of 92% were obtained over the 20 wt % Co/CNT catalyst promoted by 0.5 wt % Ni.

Abstract:FeMnLi/CNTs catalysts with different Li content were prepared by the incipient wetness impregnation method for light olefins from syngas and investigated by N2 adsorption-desorption, XRD, H2-TPR, CO2-TPD and Mӧssbauer techniques. The addition of Li increased the surface basicity of catalysts and promoted the transformation of Fe3+ specious and formation of active phase, χ-Fe5C2, which was favorable to CO conversion and light olefins selectivity. The best catalytic performance was achieved over 8Fe8Mn1.5Li catalyst with CO conversion of 14.18% and light olefins selectivity of 48.42%.
Facet-Controlled Cu-doped and K-promoted Fe2O3 nanosheets for efficient CO2 hydrogenation to liquid hydrocarbons

Abstract:Hydrogenation of CO2 into liquid hydrocarbons is an attractive route for chemical utilization of CO2, but suffers from limited product selectivity. By controlling the exposed surface atoms of metal catalyst, purposefully enhancing the reaction rate of bottleneck steps for CO2 activation and C-C coupling is expected to solve this problem. Here, we tuned the exposed surface atoms of catalysts separately and simultaneously by facet control, doping and promoter modification; a nanosheet-shaped Fe2O3 rich in oxygen vacancies was first constructed to enhance the adsorption and activation of CO2. Cu doping and K promoter were further used to promote the formation of active χ-Fe5C2 phase and facilitate the coupling of C-C bond to form long chain fuels. The optimized K-promoted and Cu-doped Fe2O3 nanosheets (3 K/6Cu-Fe-S) exhibited high CO2 conversion (46.5%) and C5+ hydrocarbons selectivity (53.6%), accompanied with low CO (5.3%) and CH4 selectivity (12.2%) at 300 °C, outperforming other reported Fe-based catalysts significantly. Meanwhile, a 205 h on stream test indicated the excellent stability of 3 K/6Cu-Fe-S. The effects of each tuning method on catalytic activity and product selectivity were further studied by combining the change of the phase and surface electronic structure of the catalyst before and after the reaction. Cu doping and K promoter were verified to have a synergistic enhancement effect on the hydrogenation performance of CO2, rather than just the sum of the two. These findings would be beneficial for the rational design of CO2 hydrogenation catalysts.
