Abstract:The development of organic solar cells (OSCs) based on non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) is a potential way to conquer the dilemma of OSCs based on fullerene derivatives acceptors (FM). In this article, four promising NFAs, two excellent polymers and eight donor/acceptor (D/A) interfaces based on NFAs and polymers are theoretically investigated using DFT and TD-DFT. Geometric structures, electronic and optical absorption properties of NFAs and polymers were studied in details. By calculating the frontier molecular orbital (FMO) levels, exciton binding energies, optical absorptions and analyzing density-of-states (DOS) and charge difference density (CDD), the roles of NFAs (or polymers) in the FMO energy levels and optical absorptions of D/A interfaces were revealed, and the relationship between exciton binding energy and characteristic of charge separation was uncovered. The obtained charge separation/recombination rates of D/A interfaces prove that all designed D/A interfaces have great potentials for application in OSCs, and this work of optical absorption of D/A interfaces under external electric fields offers a considerable method for tuning the performance of OSC device. We hope our investigation can provide a useful guideline for enhancing the performance of OSCs.
Modulating Chlorination Position on Polymer Donors for Highly Efficient Nonfullerene Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:Introduce the substituent groups has been regard as an effective method to construct highly efficient polymer donors. However, the correlation between the position of substituent groups and the device performance of polymer donors has rarely been carefully studied and compared. In this work, Cl atoms are introduced into the BDT-based thienyl side chains and BDD-based thienyl π bridges to obtain two chlorinated D-A polymer donors H1 and H2, respectively. By systematically comparing the photovoltaic properties of H1 and H2, we found that the device performance of polymer donors is sensitive to the position of chlorine atoms. The non-fullerene organic solar cells (OSCs) based on H1:IT-4F and H1:Y6 displayed a superior PCE with 12.34% and 15.62%, while the PCE of H2:IT-4F and H2:Y6 is 11.04% and 13.80%. Owing to the H1-based blend shows more desirable aggregation morphology, more preferential face on orientation and more efficient extraction dissociation. Current work demonstrate that the position of chlorine substitution can be reasonably optimized for state-of-the-art polymer donors in the highly efficient non-fullerene OSCs.This article is protected by copyright. Efficient Charge Transport Enables High Efficiency in Dilute Donor Organic Solar Cells.

Abstract:The donor/acceptor weight ratio is crucial for photovoltaic performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). Here, we systematically investigate the photovoltaic behaviors of PM6:Y6 solar cells with different stoichiometries. It is found that the photovoltaic performance is tolerant to PM6 contents ranging from 10 to 60 wt %. Especially an impressive efficiency over 10% has been achieved in dilute donor solar cells with 10 wt % PM6 enabled by efficient charge generation, electron/hole transport, slow charge recombination, and field-insensitive extraction. This raises the question about the origin of efficient hole transport in such dilute donor structure. By investigating hole mobilities of PM6 diluted in Y6 and insulators, we find that effective hole transport pathway is mainly through PM6 phase in PM6:Y6 blends despite with low PM6 content. The results indicate that a low fraction of polymer donors combines with near-infrared nonfullerene acceptors could achieve high photovoltaic performance, which might be a candidate for semitransparent windows.

Abstract:Polymerization of Y6-type acceptor molecules leads to bulk-heterojunction organic solar cells with both high power-conversion efficiency and device stability, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here we show that the exciton recombination dynamics of polymerized Y6-type acceptors (Y6-PAs) strongly depends on the degree of aggregation. While the fast exciton recombination rate in aggregated Y6-PA competes with electron-hole separation at the donor–acceptor (D–A) interface, the much-suppressed exciton recombination rate in dispersed Y6-PA is sufficient to allow efficient free charge generation. Indeed, our experimental results and theoretical simulations reveal that Y6-PAs have larger miscibility with the donor polymer than Y6-type small molecular acceptors, leading to D–A percolation that effectively prevents the formation of Y6-PA aggregates at the interface. Besides enabling high charge generation efficiency, the interfacial D–A percolation also improves the thermodynamic stability of the blend morphology, as evident by the reduced device "burn-in" loss upon solar illumination.

Abstract:The morphology of the bulk heterojunction plays a vital role in determining the efficiencies of the organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells. Although the device efficiencies have been greatly improved, the practice guidelines in morphology control are still lacking. In this work, impressive performance of 17.7% was achieved by modulating the electrostatic interaction and, thus, the miscibility between the newly designed polymer donors (P5T, P5T-2F) and a nonfullerene acceptor (NFA) named eC9. Three model compounds (8T, 8T-2F, and TT-2Cl) are prepared to deeply study the miscibility of the donors and acceptors in the active layers. Our findings demonstrate that the decreased molecular interaction and miscibility in P5T-2F:eC9 combinations is more favorable for obtaining suitable phase separation morphology. Abstract:Here, we combine two donor polymers with a relatively short synthesis method and fabricate ternary organic solar cells (OSCs) with a high efficiency and a decent figure-of-merit. A series of characterizations show that the optimal morphology of the ternary blend is the result of the coupling and competition of PTQ10 and PTVT‑T, where the molecular packing and phase separation motif of PTQ10 is broken but the strong aggregation of PTVT‑T is suppressed, resulting in efficient charge transport and collection, as well as suppressed bimolecular recombination. Moreover, a previously reported solvent-vapor-assisted casting method, taken as an understanding-guided optimization, pushes the optimal system’s efficiency to 19.11%. Furthermore, PTVT‑T-containing systems clearly show better light soaking and thermal stability than the PTQ10 binary control system, benefiting from the durable polymer matrix. Our work provides a useful approach for developing efficient, stable, and low-cost OSCs based on state-of-the-art donor/acceptor systems through morphology control of the ternary design.

Developing Halogen‐Free Polymer Donors for Efficient Nonfullerene Organic Solar Cells by Addition of Highly Electron‐Deficient Diketopyrrolopyrrole Unit

Abstract:High‐performance polymer donors when paired with nonfullerene acceptors are mainly limited to flanking halogenated benzodithiophene (BDT)‐based π‐conjugated copolymers, which however involve complex synthetic procedures. Herein, a series of halogen‐free polymer donors that link BDT moiety with two highly electron‐deficient benzodithiophene‐dione (BDD) and diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) units with various molar ratios is developed. Compared with the benchmark PBDB‐T donor containing BDD unit, additional incorporation of a stronger electron‐negative DPP unit markedly lowers frontier molecular orbital levels and extends optical absorption, potentially leading to simultaneously enhanced VOC and JSC in organic solar cells. A remarkable power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 10.28% is thus obtained in the optimal P75 (BDD : DPP = 3:1 mol%) and Y6 blend cells in comparison with the reference PBDB‐T:Y6 (9.20%). A slight addition of PC71BM into the blend is found to further generate finer phase‐separated domains and thus increase the best efficiency up to 12.20%. The subtly critical roles of PC71BM are determined by transient absorption measurements on both thin‐film and in situ devices to be the prolonged free charge carrier lifetime and the shallow charge transfer states, which enhance JSC and fill factor in the device, respectively.
Long-Range Charge Separation Enabled by Intramoiety Delocalized Excitations in Copolymer Donors in Organic Photovoltaic Blends.

Abstract:For over two decades, most high-performance organic photovoltaics (OPVs) have been made with donor:acceptor bulk heterojunctions with domain sizes limited by exciton diffusion, where charge separation mostly takes place through the dissociation of the interfacial charge-transfer (xCT) excitons. Recently, nonfullerene acceptor (NFA)-based OPVs have shown excellent compatibility to device structures with large domains in active layers. However, it remains elusive how the excitations that are distant from the interfaces are converted into free charges. Here, we report the identification of a new charge separation channel in model copolymer/NFA blends mediated by intra-moiety delocalized excitations in both planar heterojunctions and donor-enriched bulk heterojunctions. The delocalized excitations induced by interchromophore electronic interactions in copolymer donors mediate the long-range charge separation and dissociate into free charges without forming the bound xCT states first, releasing the constraints associated with the short exciton diffusion length in organic materials. The long-range charge separation mechanism uncovered in this work, in cooperation with the short-range xCT-mediated pathway, holds the potential to further optimize OPVs with diverse device structures.
Insights into the Local Bulk-Heterojunction Packing Interactions and Donor–Acceptor Energy Level Offsets in Scalable Photovoltaic Polymers

Abstract:An energy level offset in organic solar cells (OSCs) is necessary for efficient charge generation and separation. To date, there are several polymer donor–non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) systems with a negligible ionization energy (IE) level offset achieving high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) over 15%. Although these donor–acceptor pairs perform well in solar cells, there is little understanding on why some systems can achieve this phenomenon, and therefore, many of these BHJs are discovered through a trial-and-error process. Here, we investigate how OSC efficiencies can be modulated by adjusting the IE level offset in a series of PTQ10 n:m random terpolymer donors by means of solar cell performance (open circuit voltage (V OC) and short-circuit current (J SC)) when paired with Y6 and IDIC acceptors. PTQ10’s IE level was adjusted through a copolymerization of thiophene (n), bithiophene (m), and quinoxaline monomer units in different ratios, whereby 10% bithiophene leads to a 0.05 eV decrease in the polymer’s IE. The incorporation of 10% bithiophene (PTQ10 90:10) led to a 1.3 ± 0.5 mA/cm2 increase in J SC when paired with Y6 (PCE = 13.8 ± 0.4%) in conjunction with an incremental decrease in V OC and fill factor (FF) when compared to PTQ10 (PCE = 14.7 ± 0.1%). Increasing the bithiophene content to 20% (PTQ10 80:20) exacerbated the decrease in V OC and FF further without the benefit of increased J SC. The drop in FF with increasing bithiophene incorporation correlated with increasing edge-on orientation in the neat polymer and polymer:Y6 BHJ blend films, shown by grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements. High-field solid-state (ss)NMR spectroscopy analysis of single component PTQ10, Y6, and PTQ10:Y6 BHJ blends provides a complementary insight into how a low IE level offset system (PTQ10:Y6) imparts high performance. By resolving inter- and intramolecular packing interactions at sub-nanometer distances, ssNMR results offer key insights into the changes in local structures and conformations in the vicinity of the alkoxy PTQ10 side chains and in the Y6 end group in BHJ blends when compared to the neat compounds. Despite the changes in local structures, the BHJ morphology maintains pure D-A domains and preserves the microstructure, which correlates with the high-performing solar cells. A synergic combination of chemical design, multiscale morphology characterization, and device physics shown in this study provides an excellent strategy to investigate the BHJ and its role in organic solar cell performance.

Correlating Aggregation Ability of Polymer Donors with Film Formation Kinetics for Organic Solar Cells with Improved Efficiency and Processability

Abstract:Film formation kinetics significantly impact molecular processability and power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells. Here, two ternary random copolymerization polymers are reported, D18─N-p and D18─N-m, to modulate the aggregation ability of D18 by introducing trifluoromethyl-substituted pyridine unit at para- and meta-positions, respectively. The introduction of pyridine unit significantly reduces material aggregation ability and adjusts the interactions with acceptor L8-BO, thereby leading to largely changed film formation kinetics with earlier phase separation and longer film formation times, which enlarge fiber sizes in blend films and improve carrier generation and transport. As a result, D18─N-p with moderate aggregation ability delivers a high PCE of 18.82% with L8-BO, which is further improved to 19.45% via interface engineering. Despite the slightly inferior small area device performances, D18─N-m shows improved solubility, which inspires to adjust the ratio of meta-trifluoromethyl pyridine carefully and obtain a polymer donor D18─N-m-10 with good solubility in nonhalogenated solvent o-xylene. High PCEs of 13.07% and 12.43% in 1 cm2 device and 43 cm2 module fabricated with slot-die coating method are achieved based on D18─N-m-10:L8-BO blends. This work emphasizes film formation kinetics optimization in device fabrication via aggregation ability modulation of polymer donors for efficient devices.
Optimizing the power conversion processes in diluted donor/acceptor heterojunctions towards 19.4% efficiency all-polymer solar cells

Abstract:All polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) promise mechanically-flexible and morphologically-stable organic photovoltaics and have aroused increased interests very recently. However, due to their disorderly conformation structures within the photoactive film, inefficient charge generation and carrier transport are observed which lead to inferior photovoltaic performance compared to smaller molecular acceptor-based photovoltaics. Here, by diluting PM6 with a cutting-edge polymeric acceptor PY-IT and diluting PY-IT with PM6 or D18, donor-dominating or acceptor-dominating heterojunctions were prepared. Synchrotron X-ray and multiple spectrometer techniques reveal that the diluted heterojunctions receive increased structural order, translating to enhanced carrier mobility, improved exciton diffusion length, and suppressed non-radiative recombination loss during the power conversion. As the results, the corresponding PM6+1%PY-IT/PY-IT+1%D18 and PM6+1%PY-IT/PY-IT+1%PM6 devices fabricated by layer-by-layer deposition received superior power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.4% and 18.8% respectively, along with enhanced operational lifetimes in air, outperforming the PCE of 17.5% in the PM6/PY-IT reference device.

Abstract:A fundamental relationship between chemical structure and miscibility in organic conjugated systems is established by considering the intermolecular electrostatic force. By designing a new non‐fused acceptor, an outstanding efficiency of 13.3% is achieved with a typical polythiophene donor, which is among the top values for low‐cost organic solar cells. Organic solar cells (OSCs) have achieved much progress with rapidly increasing power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). It should be noted that the top‐performance OSCs are generally consisted of active materials with complex chemical structures, resulting in high costs. Here, combining the material design and morphology control, high‐efficiency OSCs are fabricated by a low‐cost donor: acceptor blend. A completely non‐fused electron acceptor named Tz is designed and synthesized via introducing thiazole units on both sides of a bithiophene core, which shows an outstanding PCE of 13.3% with a typical polythiophene donor. More importantly, optimization guidelines are presented to get excellent morphology for low‐cost donor:acceptor systems. Three polythiophenes are selected, poly(3‐hexylthiophene) and its two derivatives with electron‐withdrawing substitutions (PDCBT and PDCBT‐2F), as donors to fabricate the cell devices. The computational and experimental data reveal that decreasing the electrostatic interaction between polythiophene and Tz is the key to getting a suppressed miscibility and thus a high phase purity. This study provides insight into the molecular design and donor:acceptor matching requirements for high‐efficiency and low‐cost OSCs.

Abstract:Two polymer donors, FTAZ and J71, and two fused-ring electron acceptors, ITIC1 and ITIC2, are used to investigate the effects of conjugation dimension on the performance of organic solar cells ( OSCs). FTAZ and J71, and ITIC1 and ITIC2 share the same molecular backbone, respectively, while J71 and ITIC2 possess conjugated thienyl side chains. The addition of conjugated side chains slightly red-shifts the absorption spectra and lowers the bandgap due to the extended 2D conjugation. Conjugated side chains on the acceptor induce the self-aggregation of the acceptors, while conjugated side chains on the donor increase the miscibility of the donors and acceptors, thus optimizing the morphology of the active layers. The blends based on mixed combinations, namely 1D donor/2D acceptor and 2D donor/1D acceptor, show better performance relative to 1D donor/1D acceptor and 2D donor/2D acceptor.

Abstract:Two polymers, r-PDI-diTh and i-PDI-diTh, were synthesized as acceptors applicable for solution-processed BHJ OSCs. By introducing a bulky, dove tailed side chain and thereby suppressing the p-p interactions between perylenediimide units in the backbones of acceptor polymers, more effective phase segregation of these acceptors with a donor polymer (P3HT) was realized. By employing the inverted device configuration to better match the vertical phase separation of donor-acceptor polymers produced by solution processing, undesirable polaron pair recombination was suppressed, and PCE up to 2.17% was achieved from the regio-regular acceptor r-PDI-diTh.

Abstract:Using multiple donor polymers is a simple means to broaden the absorption range of organic solar cells (OSCs). Yet, achieving improved photovoltaic and mechanical properties in OSCs on dual polymers has not met with success so far. Here, we address this challenge by introducing a low-cost and 2D semi-paracrystalline conjugated polymer PTQ10 as the second polymer donor to the benchmark PM6:N3 blend. Both improved photovoltaic and mechanical performance were realized in the optimized PM6:PTQ10:N3-based OSCs at a polymer blend ratio of 4:1. The influence of the second polymer on the mechanical and photovoltaic properties of the ternary blend system was examined via grazing-incidence X-ray scattering and thin-film mechanical measurements, offering an in-depth understanding of the inner relationships between the film structure and mechanical properties in such ternary blend systems. Crucially, we were able to predict the composition dependence of the elastic modulus via a theoretical model for these ternary blend films based on dual-donor polymers. This work set a new guide for fabricating highly efficient and stretchable solar cells from multiple polymer blends.

Abstract:In contrast to classical bulk heterojunction (BHJ) in organic solar cells (OSCs), quasi‐homojunction (QHJ) with extremely low donor contents (≤ 10 wt%) is unusual and generally yields much lower device efficiency. Here, we select representative polymer donors and nonfullerene acceptors to fabricate QHJ OSCs, and illustrate a complete picture for the operation mechanisms of high‐efficiency QHJ devices. PTB7‐Th:Y6 QHJ devices at donor: acceptor (D:A) ratios of 1:8 or 1:20 can achieve 95% or 64% of the efficiency obtained from its BHJ counterpart at the optimal D:A ratio of 1:1.2, respectively, whereas QHJ devices with other donors or acceptors suffer from rapid roll‐off of efficiency when the donors are diluted. Moreover, these QHJ devices show superior thermal stability compared to their BHJ counterparts. We use a suite of electronic device measurements, current‐sensing atomic force microscopy, ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy and X‐ray scattering morphology characterization to elucidate the fundamentals of the high‐performance QHJ devices. A large portion of free charges can be intrinsically generated in the neat Y6 domains rather than at the D/A interface. Y6 also serves as an ambipolar transport channel, so that hole transport can be realized with small amounts of donor PTB7‐Th. The key role of the small amount of PTB7‐Th is primarily to reduce charge recombination, likely assisted by enhancing quadrupolar fields within the Y6 itself, rather than the previously thought principal roles of light absorption, exciton splitting and hole transport. Synergistic Design of Imidazole-Based Polymer Donors for Enhanced Organic Solar Cell Efficiency

Abstract:Within the realm of organic solar cells (OSCs), designing new high-efficiency polymer donors remains a significant challenge. Achieving the right balance in polymer backbone planarity is crucial: excessive planarity can lead to undesirable aggregation, while insufficient planarity can hinder the charge transport efficiency. In this study, we designed and synthesized an imidazole-based acceptor (A) unit for the first time and then investigated the impact of backbone planarity on charge transport capacity and power conversion efficiency (PCE). Backbone planarity was precisely tuned by incorporating isomeric alkyl chains on the thiophene π-bridge, resulting in four distinct polymer donors: MZC8-F, MZC8-Cl, MZEH-F, and MZEH-Cl. The results showed that the steric hindrance from the EH-branched alkyl chain induced backbone distortion and caused a blue-shift in the absorption spectrum. MZEH-Cl, with its poor planarity and excessively low HOMO energy level, achieved a PCE of just 7.6%. Through careful modulation, MZC8-Cl emerged as the most efficient, with a remarkable PCE of 17.3%, setting a new benchmark for imidazole-based polymer donors. This study not only deepens the understanding of the role of polymer backbone planarity in photovoltaic performance but also lays the groundwork for developing high-efficiency polymer donors.

Abstract:With the rapid development of small-molecule electron acceptors, polymer electron donors are becoming more important than ever in organic photovoltaics, and there is still room for the currently available high-performance polymer donors. To further develop polymer donors with finely tunable structures to achieve better photovoltaic performances, random ternary copolymerization is a useful technique. Herein, by incorporating a new electron-withdrawing segment 2,3-bis(3-octyloxyphenyl)dithieno[3,2-f:2',3'-h]quinoxaline derivative (C12T-TQ) to PM6, a series of terpolymers were synthesized. It is worth noting that the introduction of the C12T-TQ unit can deepen the highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels of the resultant polymers. In addition, the polymer Z6 with a 10% C12T-TQ ratio possesses the highest film absorption coefficient (9.86 × 104 cm-1) among the four polymers. When blended with Y6, it exhibited superior miscibility and mutual crystallinity enhancement between Z6 and Y6, suppressed recombination, better exciton separation and charge collection characteristics, and faster hole transfer in the D-A interface. Consequently, the device of Z6:Y6 successfully achieved enhanced photovoltaic parameters and yielded an efficiency of 17.01%, higher than the 16.18% of the PM6:Y6 device, demonstrating the effectiveness of the meta-octyloxy-phenyl-modified dithieno[3,2-f:2',3'-h]quinoxaline moiety to build promising terpolymer donors for high-performance organic solar cells.
