Abstract:The fluid flow and residence time distribution (RTD) in Taylor vortex flow reactor were experimentally studied with water as medium. The flow field in Taylor vortex flow reactor and its RTD were simulated by the calculated fluid hydrodynamics (CFD) techniques. The results indicated that RTD of Taylor vortex flow reactor is influenced by the rotating speed of inner cylinder and axis speed of fluid flow, and the simulated result is consistent with the experimental data.

Abstract:Tracer pulse-input method was used to investigate the effects of structure and operation parameters and fluid viscosity of Taylor reactor on the fluid residence time distribution.It has been found that the flow mixing was enhanced with an increase in Taylor number(Ta) and a decrease in axial Reynolds number(Reax).Based on the tanks-in-series model,an expression was presented to describe the relationship among number of equivalent CSTRs,rector structure parameters,Taylor number and axial Reynold number.The results show that the N value calculated under the investigated conditions(Ta=280-3 230,Reax=0.89-6.78) agrees with experimental data very well and the equation can be applied widely.

Abstract:A bi-dispersed bubble model incorporating lateral forces and bubble-induced turbulence is employed to simulate hydrodynamics in an up flow jet-loop reactor (JLR) operated in gas-liquid co-injection mode. In the model the bubble swarm effect on the drag force was differently described for the large and small bubble phases, where the drag force for the large bubble decreases with the gas holdup in accordance with the wake acceleration effect, while for the small bubble the drag force increases with the gas holdup in consideration of the hindrance effect of the bubble swarm. The simulated radial profiles of gas holdup and axial liquid velocity agree with the cold experiments, which shows that the different description of drag forces for the large and small bubbles is reasonable for correctly simulating the effect of superficial gas velocity on liquid circulation velocity. Effects of draft tube position (H-c) and cross-sectional area ratio of riser to downcomer (A(r)/A(d)) are evaluated by model simulation. The results show that with the increase of H-C and A(r)/A(d), both overall gas holdup and liquid circulation velocity reach a maximum at He = 0.06 m and A(r)/A(d) = 0.44, respectively. Recommendatory geometric parameters for the JLR design is: 0 < H-C <0.09 m, 0.4 < Ar/Ad < 0.7. (C) 2018 Institution of Chemical Engineers. Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A Taylor–Couette (TC) reactor has been considered as a promising technology to produce uniform ultra-fine particles with controlled morphology and size because of its rather narrow shear rate distribution in comparison to a conventional stirred tank. However, small particles in the TC reactor are likely entrapped by the Taylor vortices and concentrated more in the core of the vortices, thus having an adverse or a positive impact on producing the uniformly fine particles. To mitigate this disadvantage, one approach is to adopt an inner cylinder with a variable cross-section through the proper design to obtain a non-constant gap between the inner and outer cylinders in the TC reactor. This study investigates the use of specific profiles of the cross section for the inner cylinder to deform the Taylor vortices, effectively reducing the regions of low velocity and shear rate in the TC reactor. The profiles are composed of a series of curves. The flow patterns and shear rate distributions in the modified TC reactors were investigated using CFD modelling. The sliding mesh method and the Reynolds stress model were employed in the simulation to account for highly turbulent rotating flows. The simulated results compared with those for the classical TC reactor clearly indicate that the regions of low shear rate are effectively reduced in the modified TC reactors because the Taylor vortices occurring in the gap becomes temporal-periodic with respect to the stationary outer cylinder. The obtained shear rate distributions are remarkably narrower than those of the classical TC reactor. It was revealed that the curvature of curves for the cross-section profiles can significantly affect the shear rate distributions, and there exists an optimal profile for the inner cylinder cross-section.

Abstract:The radial distribution of liquid velocity in the axial direction of a jet bubbling reactor has been measured by experimentation. Three different typical flow structures controlled by liquid jet, gas bubbling, and liquid jet coupled with bubbling are observed. A tank in series model is established on this basis. Calculated values in each region are in good agreement with measured values in jet, bubbling, and wall effect controlled areas. Axial flow rate, radial exchange rate, and jet controlled volume eta are analyzed from energy input aspect under different u(g) and u(j). Simulation results indicate that under the synergetic action of the liquid jet and gas bubbling effect, jet controlled area exhibits a "spindle" structure, and its size decreases with the increase of ug. When gas input power occupies about 67% of total energy consumption, the best synergy of liquid jet and gas bubbling is obtained. (C) 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers
Online Parameters Measurement of Taylor Flow in Small Channels Using Optical Technique

Abstract:In this work, an online optical system for the parameters measurement of the gas-liquid Taylor flow in a 4.0mm-inner-diameter small channel was developed. The presented method was able to measure the bubble velocity, bubble frequency, bubble and slug lengths, and determine the void fraction of the gas-liquid Taylor flow in small channels. A homogeneous flow model was introduced to simplify the analysis and parameter calculation of the gas-liquid Taylor flow. Experimental results showed that the presented optical method was effective and well applied to the online measurement or monitoring the parameters of Taylor flow in small channels. The relative error of the measured bubble velocity and void fraction were less than ±5% and ±10%, respectively.

Abstract:In recent years, many models have been developed to describe the gas-liquid microdispersion process, which mainly rely on mechanistic analysis and may not be universally applicable. In order to provide a more comprehensive model and, most significantly, to provide a model for design, we have established a general database of microbubble generation in T-junction microdevices, including 854 data points from 12 pieces of literature. A neural network model that combines mechanistic and data modeling is developed. By transfer learning, more accurate results can be obtained. Additionally, we have proposed a design method that enables a relative deviation of less than 5% from the expected bubble size. A new device was designed and prepared to confirm the reliability of the method, which can prepare smaller bubbles than other common T-junction devices. In this way, a general and universal database and model are established and a design method for a gas-liquid T-junction microreactor is developed.
General Prediction Models for Void Fraction and Specific Surface Area of Gas–liquid Microflows

Abstract:The flow characteristics of void fraction and specific surface area are important to predict the mass transfer and reaction performances in gas-liquid microreactors. However, the models and trends for the two parameters in different flow patterns remain ununified and insufficient. Accordingly, this work first time studies the void fraction and specific surface area in a very wide flow pattern range (Taylor, short bubble, bubbly, and bubble swarm flow). The results show that at the same gas-liquid flow rates, the void fraction decreases with bubble size in Taylor and short bubble flow but is totally opposite in bubbly and bubble swarm flow. Importantly, the variation of specific surface area with bubble size is independent of the flow pattern and decreases with bubble size. Finally, based on bubble size, two general models for the two parameters are developed. This work provides a new direction for the unification of flow characteristics.

Abstract:Generating gas-liquid Taylor flow is the prerequisite for the application of gas-liquid microfluidics. However, a suitable operating method for gas-liquid microfluidics has yet to be reported. Due to the different operating methods, this work finds a novel phenomenon of the strong hysteresis of the flow state transformation between parallel flow and Taylor flow in gas- liquid microfluidics. Three different flow regions are defined: parallel flow region, bistable region, and Taylor flow region. Importantly, the hysteresis phenomenon in the bistable region could be the first time reported in gas-liquid microfluidics. Results show that the flow state in the bistable region under given operating parameters strongly depends on the system's initial state, and the hydrodynamics of parallel flow and Taylor flow under the bistable region is controlled by kinetic energy and interfacial energy, respectively. The phenomenon reminds researchers to follow a suitable operating method for gas-liquid microfluidics.

Abstract:The liquid–liquid immiscible flow and mass transfer were investigated in a novel Taylor–Couette microreactor (TCMR). Due to the rotation shear and microscale effects, each phase flowed in the form of helical strips/bands, instead of dispersion droplets as in conventional equipment. Based on the movement and inclination of the bands, the helical vortex (HV), mixed helical vortex (MHV) and stationary helical vortex (SHV) were distinguished. The characteristics of the regimes were strongly influenced by rotation speed and flow rate, but the specific surface area only slightly varied. The flow regimes also influenced the two phase mass transfer. It was shown that the mass transfer coefficient kLa monotonically increased with the rotation speed in the HV regime, while it slightly decreased when the flow shifted into the MHV/SHV regime. According to the parametric studies, empirical correlations were developed for the flow regime transition and mass transfer prediction.

Abstract:The hydrodynamics of gas-liquid Taylor flow in microchannels is vital to the microreactor's application, but its characteristics in viscous liquids are rarely reported. Accordingly, this study concentrates on the characteristics of bubble behavior in viscous liquids (45.6-240.5 mPamiddots). The results show that the viscosity effect could dominate the bubble morphology. Importantly, considering the liquid film distribution, a novel parameter as the equivalent liquid film thickness is proposed for the square microchannel and it is strongly related to the capillary number and gas-liquid flow rate ratio. Besides, the bubble velocity first decreases to a minimum value and then becomes faster with the flow rate of the liquid, and the ideality of the multiphase system decreases with the increase of liquid viscosity and pressure drop. Finally, the viscosity term is introduced to the pressure drop equation based on the Lockhart-Martinelli type. This work enriches the understanding of the viscosity effect on gas-liquid microflows.

Abstract:Mass transfer performance is markedly improved in microchannels compared with traditional gas-liquid chemical devices. The residence time is a crucial parameter for determining the mass transfer performance. However, investigation of the residence time in gas-liquid absorption systems remains insufficient, especially in viscous gas-liquid systems with obvious flow non-uniformity between the two phases. Herein, the microscale gas-liquid flow and mass transfer performance in viscous liquids (9.0-55.4 mPa center dot s) based on the true residence time are investigated. Owing to the broad operating conditions of the gas-liquid flow ratio (0.2-6.7), both Taylor flow and bubbly flow patterns were observed. The results show that the bubble velocity gradually decreases to the minimum value with increasing flow distance in the Taylor flow pattern owing to gas absorption. Subsequently, bubble velocity gradually increases under the bubbly flow pattern, and the dominant factor of bubble velocity is pointed out. The true bubble residence time initially increases and then gradually decreases compared to the superficial time as the gas holdup decreases, based on the superficial velocity using the initial flow rates. The transition point occurs at a gas holdup of 0.2. In addition, the turning point of the different rules of the pressure drop occurs at a gas holdup of 0.5. Finally, a new dimensionless equation was proposed to predict the mass transfer coefficient and reveal the equation differences between low-and high-viscosity liquids. This work enriches the understanding of microflow characteristics and mass transfer performance in viscous solutions and provides a reliable guide for microreactor design.
N‐shape pressure drop curve of gas–liquid microchannel reactor and modeling

Abstract:Accurate prediction of gas–liquid pressure drop is essential to microreactors design; however, the understanding of general rules of pressure drop in a wide gas–liquid flow ratio, especially smaller than 1.0, remains insufficient, Accordingly, this work systematically studies the pressure drop rule within the gas–liquid flow ratio of 0.2–2.0. The results show that, under a given gas velocity, the pressure drop first increases and then decreases, and finally back increases with the liquid flow velocity, and the named N‐shape pressure drop curve could be clearly observed. Besides, the rules of gas–liquid unit length and gas‐phase holdup are explored to reveal the mechanism behind the N‐shape pressure drop curve. Finally, three semi‐empirical correlations based on the gas–liquid unit length and separated flow model are successfully proposed for the N‐shape pressure drop. This work provides some important fundamental information for the reliable design of gas–liquid microreactors.

Abstract:Bubble formation routes are vital to the application of microreactors, but a systematic understanding of the vertical squeezing remains lacking. Accordingly, this study focuses on the vertical squeezing bubble generation mechanism in viscous liquids in a T-junction microchannel. The results show there are the retraction, expansion, shrinking, and necking formation stages in the vertical squeezing route. A new formation stage, the retraction stage, is seen compared with horizontal squeezing. The influence of operating conditions on the generation mechanism was investigated from the gas-liquid interface behavior and force analysis, and the different formation mechanisms of satellite bubbles in the necking stage for two different squeezing routes were revealed. In addition, the complex bubble generation frequency rules were unified using a dimensionless frequency parameter. Finally, models for the generation frequency and bubble size were proposed. Abstract:Controllable regulation of gas–liquid microflow pattern and bubble size is significant to bubble-based microfluidics, but it is hard to be realized with the existing technologies. Accordingly, this work reports a convenient strategy that changes the gas kinetic energy to controllably regulate the microflow patterns from Taylor flow to short bubble flow and bubbly flow. Results exhibit that the desired flow patterns and bubble size can be effectively obtained by varying the gas inlet size to change gas kinetic energy, and a much wider bubbly flow regime which could not be reached normally in conventional T-junction microchannels is easily obtained. Besides, from the bubble’s characteristic width and length, the behaviors of the bubble generation in different T-junctions were compared to reveal the mechanism behind the generation of bubbles. Importantly, as the hydraulic diameter of the gas inlet decreases from 365.0 to 50.0 μm, the dominative factors on the bubble generation transfer mainly from the liquid phase to both the two-phases because the gas–liquid Weber number ratio increases from 6.6 × 10−5–5.4 × 10−3 to 4.2 × 10−2–3.4. Finally, the parameter of the two-phase Weber number ratio is the first time introduced to the unified prediction model for bubble generation frequency.

Abstract:Microfluidics technology offers high efficiency of heat and mass transfer and low safety hazards compared to conventional multiphase processes. The multiphase flow in the microchannels is usually characterized as Taylor flow that includes elongated microbubbles , separated by liquid slugs. In the current study, we employ OpenFOAM CFD package to investigate the effect of the surface tension and the contact angle on the interfacial surface area and transport yield in microscale systems. The results show that contact angle can significantly affect the surface area and the bubble size while the surface tension does not change these parameters in the system. Moreover, in lower contact angle, the flow may turn into bubbly flow, affecting $K_L$, mass transfer coefficient in the liquid phase. Findings of the current study can improve the mass transfer coefficient in microreactors while avoiding thermal runaways, hot spots and other safety issues of conventional reactors.

Abstract:Velocity uniformity in reaction channels has a significant effect on the performance of laminated microreactors with micro-pin-fin arrays (MPFAR) for hydrogen production. The hydrogen production efficiency can be improved by optimizing the structure of flow manifolds. The relationship between the flow manifold structure and the velocity distribution in the reaction channel with MPFAR is established by an equivalent electrical resistance network model validated via simulation. The effects of the flow manifold structure on the velocity distribution are investigated. The results show that the velocity distribution can be improved by increasing the y-direction coordinate Y-pi of the flow manifold inlet tube. The flow manifold structure is optimized for better velocity distribution in reaction channels with different MPFAR widths.
Optimized design of macro‐microreactor for scale‐up of liquid–liquid chemical processes

Abstract:The scale‐up of microreactor‐based flow chemical process represents a grand challenge in chemical engineering. The small characteristic size (<1000 μm) of a typical microreactor leads to not only microscale effect (process intensification) but also low throughput. Here, we report macro‐microreactor to achieve scale‐up of liquid–liquid chemical operation with process intensification. By incorporating the designed internals based on computational fluid dynamics, the characteristic size of the macro‐microreactor is expanded into 3000–4000 μm. The optimized design of macro‐microreactor with helical‐shaped internal exhibits both similar or even stronger microscale effect and high throughput in contrast to the typical microreactor. For the liquid–liquid chemical process, seven times higher mass transfer coefficient and about half reduction of the pressure drop are realized. These macro‐microreactors would find further applications in industrial chemical manufacturing.

Abstract:Flow reactor models for gas-liquid reaction systems are proposed in this paper based on the penetration theory in the isothermal case. The mass transfer mechanism accompanied by a chemical irreversible first-order reaction is mathematically treated in a new way in order to use its results to develop reactor design models conveniently. Analytical solutions can be obtained for the desgin equation system involving linear differential equations by using of either the eigenvalues or the Laplace-transformation and the superposition of the system. In addition, an iteration procedure is given to solve the nonlinear differential equation system numerically. Comparisons of the results from the analytical and numerical solutions are also made graphically.

Abstract:The flow characteristics of gas and non-Newtonian fluid in a rectangular T-microchannel with cross section of 150 μm × 50 μm are experimentally studied. Four flow patterns are observed, including bubble flow, Taylor flow, transitional flow and annular flow. The effects of two-phase flowrate, the CMC/SDS concentration, and microchannel size on the flow pattern maps and Taylor bubble/liquid slug length are compared. The bubble length increases with gas/liquid flowrates ratio, whilst the change of slug length is opposite. The bubble length decreases with liquid viscosity or surface tension. The slug length increases with the liquid viscosity, but decreases with surface tension. Experimental data is analyzed in relationship to JG/JL , Re and Ca using dimensional analysis. Two empirical equations are given respectively to predict the Taylor bubble/slug lengths. Predictions are largely consistent with the experimental results with maximum 25% variance. This provides an important reference for the controllable operation of two-phase flow in rectangular microchannels.
