Abstract:Land is one kind of indispensable natural resources on which human depends for survival and development. However, with the rapid development of economy and society in China, the inefficient, extensive and other irrational ways of land use have triggered regional ecological unbalance which laid some negative effects on the sustainable development of China. Based on the innovative concept of ecological civilization and combined with the urbanization and new rural construction, land consolidation has made substantial contributions to the configuration of urban and rural land and the development of urbanization in China. In this paper, it analyzed the coordinated relationship between land consolidation and ecological environment and expounded the current status of domestic researches of land consolidation. Additionally, it studied the existing problems and put forward some suggestions and countermeasures for the field of land consolidation.

Abstract:The physical nature of urbanization is the strongest land-use changes. The allocation of land resources, land use spatial pattern and the driving forces of land-use changes are closely related to urbanization. First, the urbanization policy, the intensive use of urban land and the optimal allocation technology of land resources allocation are reviewed. Then, three important issues which include the spatial pattern of urban and rural areas, three-dimensional pattern as well as the application of remote sensing technology referring to the spatial pattern of land use are summarized. Further, the farmland conversion, land use/cover changes (LUCC) including the land ecological problems caused by the driving forces of land use changes are commented. Finally, an idea of system dynamics model for land use change based on perspective of urbanization is proposed.

Abstract:Land is a physical system formed by the interaction of near-surface climate, geomorphology, surface geology, hydrology, soil, flora and fauna, and the results of past and present human activities. Land resource is the land which can be used for human beings in a certain technical condition and a certain period of time. In the past, the recognition of land resources put too much emphasis on the direct use of land by human, which can easily lead to the neglect of the ecological connotation of land resources. Although the systematic characteristic of land has been widely accepted, a systematic view in the practice of land planning and management is often lacked, and results in unsustainable land resource utilization. Therefore, it is necessary to deepen the systematic theories and methodologies for further understanding land resources. Coupling pattern and process is the basic point of understanding land resource. Pattern refers to the size, shape, quantity, type and spatial composition of land; and the process includes the natural and social processes occurring in the land system. The land pattern affects the ecological and anthropogenic processes, and these processes also influence the land pattern, thus producing various spatiotemporal effects in the land system. The change of land pattern and process is the leading factor that affects ecosystem services. A clear understanding on the cascade of "pattern-process-service" would help to deeply understand the systematic relationship between the natural conditions and human needs in the spatiotemporal evolution of land resources. It will provide new important theoretical guidance for the systematic study of land resource. The methods of natural capital assessment and space planning are the new embodiment of the systematic land resource management. Deconstructing the natural capital stock and ecosystem service flow in the land system, as well as transforming the physical quantity of ecosystem service to ecosystem service value, can provide key methodological support for managing the land resource assets. Based on quantifying the size, pattern and quality of the production, living and ecological spaces, as well as identifying the interactions relationships and overlapping areas, the multifunctional landscape could be located and the ecological security pattern could be constructed, which can provide new methodological support for spatial planning. It has become an important requirement to seek an analytical approach for the relationship between supply and demand of ecosystem services, and reduce the uncertainty of the valuation on ecosystem services. Moreover, it has been a methodological difficulty to spatially trade-off and optimize the coordination of the land use purposes among production, living and ecological space. In conclusion, systematically understanding land resource is not only a theoretical need for comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the complex human-land system knowledge, but also a practical demand for China's ecological civilization strategy. Starting from the coupling of pattern and process, strengthening multi-scale space observation and model simulation, and effectively identifying the "pattern-process-service" cascade relationship, can provide more comprehensive theoretical knowledge for systematically understanding land resource. Relying on the concepts of ecosystem service supply and demand, ecological assets, multifunctional landscape, and ecological security pattern, etc., to improve the "resource-capital-asset" knowledge of land system, and effectively identify "production-living-ecological space", can provide more powerful methods for systematically understanding land resource. Facing the great strategic demand of China's ecological civilization construction, by tackling the theoretical and methodological key problems of land resources research, the scientific results can be more effectively serve the governmental decision-making, and support the sustainable development of national society, economy, resources and environment.
An Investigation on Influences of Implementing New Code of Land Use Classification on Land Administration in China

Abstract:The overall goal of this paper was to examine potential positive and negative influences of implementing new land use classification system on future land administration in order to provide effective measures to improve land administration under the framework of the new classification. Methods of documentation analysis were employed. The enforcement of the new land use classification would result in a profound influence on cultivated land quality conservation, cadastral management and land ecology protection. The abolishment of an adjustable land type in the old classification system would avoid the occupation of superior quality land and thus be conducive to the complement of inferior quality land. Still, the combination of irrigated paddy fields and rain fed paddy fields to one category of paddy field creates an opportunity to circumvent quality management objectives in the procedure of occupation and complement. The establishment of vacancy land use type would be helpful for inhibiting the phenomenon of allowing land to be used for construction but not really conduct. Classifying residential land only in terms of city and village types would not only ignore the residential land over urban and rural connecting areas, but also ignore the mixed-use land, thereby causing negative effects on defining the use type for certain city land. The abolishment of unutilized land type may limit blind exploitation for land resources to certain degree. However, the continued absence of ecological land type may be detrimental to ecological conservation. In order to minimize these negative influences, land administration should suit the management environment to a variety of local conditions. This could be realized by the enforcement of new classification through three ways, i.e., subdividing new classification, improving the system of land quality evaluation and setting up ecological hearing institution for land development projects. There are two bases for subdividing new classification. One is the administration objects of local government, and the other is unique industrial structure. Like land use classification, the improvement in land quality evaluation also plays a prominent role in land administration, and it could be a critical supplement measure for land use classification. The ecological hearing system for land development project has the potential to combine macroscopic policy background with micro unique situations in order to balance economical benefits, social interests and ecological interests. It was pointed out that land use classification is just the beginning stage for land administration. The establishment of land use type is determined by needs for land administration which is affected by land use classification as well. In summary, the establishment and improvement of new land use classification should fully account for natural and social factors as well as its feasibility.

Abstract:Conversion of land to grow crops, raise animals, obtain timber, and build cities is one of the foundations of human civilization. While land use provides these essential ecosystem goods, it alters a range of other ecosystem functions, such as the provisioning of freshwater, regulation of climate and biogeochemical cycles, and maintenance of soil fertility. It also alters habitat for biological diversity. Balancing the inherent trade-offs between satisfying immediate human needs and maintaining other ecosystem functions requires quantitative knowledge about ecosystem responses to land use. These responses vary according to the type of land-use change and the ecological setting, and have local, short-term as well as global, longterm effects. Land-use decisions ultimately weigh the need to satisfy human demands and the unintended ecosystem responses based on societal values, but ecological knowledge can provide a basis for assessing the trade-offs.

Abstract:In rapid urbanization region,land use question is noticeable.Analyzing the characteristics of land quality in hot spot region is of significance to land management,planning and other practices.The conception of land general quality was put forward in this paper.Then taking account of natural resource features,economic benefit,ecological environment and society' equitableness,the general land quality of Suzhou City was evaluated.The results indicated that comparing with Suzhou's economic state,the city's land use efficiency has a large space to be improved and its ecological environment quality index is rather low and has a worsening tendency,which should be paid on enough attention.The problem of social eq- uitableness of land use is striking in Suzhou City.It is an important issue to adjust the conflicts between land use and society justice in the process of rapid urbanization.

Evaluation, simulation, and optimization of land use spatial patterns for high-quality development: A case study of Zhengzhou city, China

Abstract:High-intensity land use and resource overloaded-induced regional land use spatial pattern (LUSP) are essential and challenging for high-quality development. The empirical studies have shown that a scientific land uses spatial layout, and the supporting system should be based on a historical perspective and require better considering the double influence between the current characteristics and future dynamics. This study proposes a comprehensive framework that integrates the resource environment carrying capacity (RECC) and land use change (LUC) to investigate strategies for optimizing the spatial pattern of land use for high-quality development. China's Zhengzhou city was the subject of a case study whose datasets include remote sensing, spatial monitoring, statistics, and open sources. Three significant results emerged from the analysis: (1) The RECC has significant spatial differentiation but does not follow a specific spatial law, and regions with relatively perfect ecosystems may not necessarily have better RECC. (2) From 2020 to 2030, the construction land and farmland will fluctuate wildly, with the former increasing by 346.21 km 2 and the latter decreasing by 295.98 km 2 . (3) The study area is divided into five zones, including resource conservation, ecological carrying, living core, suitable construction, and grain supply zones, and each one has its LUSP optimization orientation. This uneven distribution of RECC reflects functional defects in the development and utilization of LUSP. In addition, the increase in construction land and the sharp decline of farmland pose potential threats to the sustainable development of the study area. Hence, these two elements cannot be ignored in the future high-quality development process. The findings indicate that the LUSP optimization based on dual dimensions of RECC and LUC is more realistic than a single-dimension solution, exhibiting the LUSP optimization's effectiveness and applicability.

Abstract:The study of land use transition has generally become an important breakthrough point to deeply understand the human-land interaction and reveal major socio-economic development issues and related environmental effects. Attempting to provide scientific support for sustainable land use and environmental management, this review systematically analyzes the overall picture, development trends, key fields and hot topics of land use transition research in the past two decades from a comprehensive perspective, which incorporates two complementary parts including the systematic quantitative literature review (based on CiteSpace) and the traditional literature review. The results reveal that: a. current research presents three characteristics, i.e., focusing on complex social issues, driven by realistic demand, and research branches becoming clearer and more systematic; b. there are four key fields and hot topics in land use transition research, i.e., i. theories and hypothesis of land use transition; ii. measuring land use transition; iii. the impacts of land use transition on “social-economic-ecological” system; iv. drivers and regulation of land use transition. However, challenges remain, current land use transition research is still to some extent fragmented, and it should be enriched by integrating with land system science. The dominant morphology biased should be redressed by underlining the recessive morphology transition process. Meanwhile, new techniques and methods are necessary to observe, track, monitor and model the recessive attributes. Finally, distant drivers of land use transition should not be ignored in this rapidly globalizing world.

Abstract:Appraisals of land-use sustainability (LUS) are indispensable for the attainment of sustainable land-use planning and management. At present, China is experiencing a pivotal phase of comprehensive reform in land-use policy, engendering a practical necessity for system-oriented land evaluations. Despite this, studies focused on national-scale systematic LUS evaluation remain scarce. Within this context, we developed a hierarchical structural framework for land-use systems based on the assumption that sustainable land-use systems adapted to development needs have mutually adaptable internal subsystems and fewer conflicting system elements. Employing this framework, we assessed the LUS across Chinese counties from 2000 to 2015 by using a newly introduced static equilibrium equation；we also analyzed the natural and socioeconomic influences and driving effect of land-use change to LUS. Findings reveal a significant spatial clustering and urban-rural differentiation within the LUS spatial pattern. Five LUS hot and cold spots and eight metropolitan areas with poor LUS were identified. Furthermore, conflicting land capability elements and the non-adaptability of land function subsystems with capability subsystems are the primary constraints on LUS; gross domestic product (GDP), population growth, and the GDP growth per unit land area had the most significant impacts on LUS; The transformation of construction and cropland into ecological land and the re-purposing of grassland into building land are primary drivers of LUS. Our findings highlight the prospective utility of the proposed LUS framework in integrated natural resource management and territorial spatial planning. Meanwhile, Insights from this evaluation case could be harnessed to optimize land-use in critical regions (including northern arid and semiarid regions, the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau region, the poverty belt around the capital, Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta metropolitan areas, as well as Fuzhou and Xiamen metropolitan areas), thereby enhancing land management decision-making processes.

Abstract:The expansion of urban settlement is driving land-use change, both now and in the future. This urban expansion is mainly determined by strong economic development and increased urbanization. Urban expansion plays an important role in human land-use. The degree of land development was proposed as a new indicator to measure the scale of land-use where construction was occurring. An overview of research was presented with the following aspects: land capacity,previous research on the expansion of land required for development, regulation of land-use zoning and development rights and optimal allocation of land. Finally, the comprehensive evaluation on the maximum capacity of construction land was proposed to the future direction of land development research.

Abstract:In a society with rapid development of economy and population as today, land-use has received more attention than before. The research on it can reflect the contradiction between the regional economy development and environmental protection. East River Valley is well developed in the south of China. The article, taking East River Valley as its research area, analyzes the extent and rate of land-use and cover change (LUCC) as well as the reciprocal transformation between land types. The article also offers a further analysis on the landscape pattern of LUCC in this valley. All above are for the hope that it can show the latent discipline of the local land change in quantitative approach, and make a scientific instruction to the social and economic development in this valley.

Abstract:Human use of land has transformed ecosystem pattern and process across most of the terrestrial biosphere, a global change often described as historically recent and potentially catastrophic for both humanity and the biosphere. Interdisciplinary paleoecological, archaeological, and historical studies challenge this view, indicating that land use has been extensive and sustained for millennia in some regions and that recent trends may represent as much a recovery as an acceleration. Here we synthesize recent scientific evidence and theory on the emergence, history, and future of land use as a process transforming the Earth System and use this to explain why relatively small human populations likely caused widespread and profound ecological changes more than 3,000 y ago, whereas the largest and wealthiest human populations in history are using less arable land per person every decade. Contrasting two spatially explicit global reconstructions of land-use history shows that reconstructions incorporating adaptive changes in land-use systems over time, including land-use intensification, offer a more spatially detailed and plausible assessment of our planet's history, with a biosphere and perhaps even climate long ago affected by humans. Although land-use processes are now shifting rapidly from historical patterns in both type and scale, integrative global land-use models that incorporate dynamic adaptations in human–environment relationships help to advance our understanding of both past and future land-use changes, including their sustainability and potential global effects.
A Study on Land Use and Land Cover Quality Change: Taking Yellow River Delta As a Case

Abstract:Land use and land cover change (LUCC) plays, an important part in the studies of global environmental change and sustainable development. Land quality change can particularly reflect the impacts of human socio-economic activities on environment. By means of land classification for LUCC to different times of remote sensing information, picking-up vegetation index (NDVI), and assaying field repeated soil samples, as well as statistical analysis, this paper studies land use and land cover quality change of past several to 21 years in the Yellow River Delta. The conclusions are as follows: 1.In the Yellow River Delta, although sediment loads carried by the Yellow River result in rapid expansion of land area, the main driving force of LUCC is derived from human economic activities. 2.In the macroscopic view, land use and land cover quality change shows a tendency to improve because of water conservancy projects, vegetation cover and increase of per unit area yield of crop so that the overall ecological environment is improving in the mass. But in the microcosmic and point analysis, there are different and imbalanced development within the region. The task of transforming saline land is still arduous. The hidden trouble of soil fertility depression can not be neglected. 3.Both natural force and human action can engender environmental positive and negative effects. But it is more difficult to restore the latter made by human activities. The paper brings forward measures for sustainable land use. Finally, there is a discussion about issues of further study.
A Scientometrics Review on Land Ecosystem Service Research

Abstract:Humans can derive the benefits from the ecosystem to satisfy human needs as well-being. Therefore, good ecosystem management is the intermediary between ecosystems and human well-being. The ecosystem services depend on the supply of nature, and also reflect the value orientation of human beings, as the basis for the realization of human survival and cultural development. Land ecosystem services are the core and hot topic of ecological research. Under the current severe depletion of land use, this research evaluates the sustainable governance on the natural resource shortage, serious environmental pollution and ecosystem degradation. Based on the Web of Science database, this paper analyzes the development characteristics and trends of global land ecosystem services research using the Bibliometrix software package. The results show that (1) the amount of literature on land ecosystem services research between 2000 and 2019 has generally increased significantly, and entered a stage of rapid development from 2015. (2) Developed countries are the main research force in the field of land ecosystem services, and the United States has the absolute leading position. Developing countries are dominated by China, Argentina, and Brazil. (3) The high-frequency keywords for land ecosystem services are land use change, land use, climate change, urbanization, carbon and water quality. This can be regarded as a research hotspot in the field of land ecosystem services to a certain extent. (4) Through cluster analysis on the big data, the research found the direction for the future land ecosystem services, mainly: (I) the restoration of degraded land and its impact on ecosystem services; (II) the environmental impact assessment of land use planning based on the ecosystem services value; (III) the tradeoff analysis of ecosystem services in sustainable land management; (IV) the impact of land cover change on ecosystem services; (V) through the historical analysis of citied papers, the research history and evolution path of land ecosystem services are explored. Based on all these arguments, a comprehensive study on the diverse facets of land ecosystem services and the practical application of land ecosystem services areas is proposed.

Abstract:: Land sparing and land sharing are two alternative land-use strategies, which was framed by Green in 2005. The land-sparing versus land-sharing framework was initially designed to explore trade-offs between food production and biodiversity conservation by means of the density-yield curve. A debate on whether the land-sparing strategy or the land-sharing strategy is optimal has been on-going in the last 10 years and it has enriched relevant theories. Considering that there are many land-sparing practices but limited relevant research to provide guidance for land management in China, in this article we introduced the land- sparing versus land- sharing framework as a new perspective. We reviewed 317 articles in the Web of Science database and conducted bibliometric analysis for a better understanding of the context, methodology, and principles of the framework. The current status and historical trend referring to major topics and research subjects were analyzed. We also summarized decision-making options in previous studies and further advanced the framework from two aspects, focusing on land multi-functionality and the parallel between agriculture and urban systems. We found that land-sparing strategy was more prominent comparing with land-sharing strategy in studies and practices around the world in spite of the pros and cons of each. The advanced framework in this study extended the research object from agriculture to urban, and integrated the diversity of ecosystem services. This study may provide some guidance for the sustainable development of the social-ecological system and enrich the theoretical basis of the land-sparing versus land-sharing framework.
