Abstract:Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have shown great potential for next-generation display and solid-state lighting applications. In the related field of perovskite solar cells, preventing the conversion of the photovoltaically active black phase (α-phase) into the less desirable yellow phase (δ-phase) is of critical importance for achieving efficient and stable solar cells based on formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3) perovskite. Similar issues related to phase stability are expected to occur in PeLEDs, leading to reduced operational stability and the formation of additional electronic traps. In this work, we introduce an additive, sulfobetaine 10 (SFB-10), into the FAPbI3 perovskite for α-phase stabilization. The SFB-10 incorporated perovskite films show enhanced crystallinity, reduced defect density and improved α-phase stability, leading to high-performance PeLEDs with external quantum efficiencies exceeding 16%, and T90 (the time for radiance to decrease to 90% of its initial value) of over 1000 s at 200 mA cm-2 in air, offering a comparable performance to some of the most stable PeLEDs reported to date. This work may contribute to the development of stable perovskite light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:Solution-processable perovskites show highly emissive and good charge transport, making them attractive for low-cost light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with high energy conversion efficiencies. Despite recent advances in device efficiency, the stability of perovskite LEDs is still a major obstacle. Here, we demonstrate stable and bright perovskite LEDs with high energy conversion efficiencies by optimizing formamidinium lead iodide films. Our LEDs show an energy conversion efficiency of 10.7%, and an external quantum efficiency of 14.2% without outcoupling enhancement through controlling the concentration of the precursor solutions. The device shows low efficiency droop, i.e. 8.3% energy conversion efficiency and 14.0% external quantum efficiency at a current density of 300 mA cm −2 , making the device more efficient than state-of-the-art organic and quantum-dot LEDs at high current densities. Furthermore, the half-lifetime of device with benzylamine treatment is 23.7 hr under a current density of 100 mA cm −2 , comparable to the lifetime of near-infrared organic LEDs.
Stabilizing Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes by Incorporation of Binary Alkali Cations

Abstract:The poor stability of perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) is a key bottleneck that hinders commercialization of this technology. Here, the degradation process of formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI(3))-based PeLEDs is carefully investigated and the device stability is improved through binary-alkalication incorporation. Using time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry, it is found that the degradation of FAPbI(3)-based PeLEDs during operation is directly associated with ion migration, and incorporation of binary alkali cations, i.e., Cs+ and Rb+, in FAPbI(3) can suppress ion migration and significantly enhance the lifetime of PeLEDs. Combining experimental and theoretical approaches, it is further revealed that Cs+ and Rb+ ions stabilize the perovskite films by locating at different lattice positions, with Cs+ ions present relatively uniformly throughout the bulk perovskite, while Rb+ ions are found preferentially on the surface and grain boundaries. Further chemical bonding analysis shows that both Cs+ and Rb+ ions raise the net atomic charge of the surrounding I anions, leading to stronger Coulomb interactions between the cations and the inorganic framework. As a result, the Cs+-Rb+-incorporated PeLEDs exhibit an external quantum efficiency of 15.84%, the highest among alkali cation-incorporated FAPbI(3) devices. More importantly, the PeLEDs show significantly enhanced operation stability, achieving a half-lifetime over 3600 min.

Abstract:Perovskite light-emitting diodes are an emerging light source technology. However, similar to perovskite solar cells, poor operational stability remains an obstacle for commercial applications. Here we demonstrate ultrastable and efficient near-infrared (~800 nm) perovskite light-emitting diodes with record-long operational lifetimes ( T 50 , extrapolated) of 11,539 h (~1.3 years) and 32,675 h (~3.7 years) for initial radiance (or current densities) of 3.7 W sr −1 m −2 (~5.0 mA cm −2 ) and 2.1 W sr −1 m −2 (~3.2 mA cm −2 ), respectively, with even longer lifetimes forecasted for lower radiance. Key to this stability is the introduction of a dipolar molecular stabilizer, which interacts with the cations and anions at the perovskite grain boundaries. This suppresses ion migration under electric fields, preventing the formation of lead iodide, which mediates the phase transformation and decomposition of α-FAPbI 3 perovskite. These results remove the critical concern that halide perovskite devices may be intrinsically unstable, paving the path towards industrial applications.

Abstract:Although perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have recently experienced significant progress, there are only scattered reports of PeLEDs with both high efficiency and long operational stability, calling for additional strategies to address this challenge. Here, we develop perovskite-molecule composite thin films for efficient and stable PeLEDs. The perovskite-molecule composite thin films consist of in-situ formed high-quality perovskite nanocrystals embedded in the electron-transport molecular matrix, which controls nucleation process of perovskites, leading to PeLEDs with a peak external quantum efficiency of 17.3% and half-lifetime of approximately 100 h. In addition, we find that the device degradation mechanism at high driving voltages is different from that at low driving voltages. This work provides an effective strategy and deep understanding for achieving efficient and stable PeLEDs from both material and device perspectives.
Reconstructing Subsurface Lattice for Stable Perovskite Photovoltaics

Abstract:Formamidinium (FA)-based perovskites with an ideal tolerance factor still face structure stability challenges because of corner-sharing and face-sharing octahedra competition. This seriously limits the long-term operational stability of FA-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, we demonstrate a subsurface lattice reconstruction strategy by simultaneously tuning the position of Pb2+ and I- planes. The reconstructed lattice configuration favors corner-sharing octahedra and makes the crystal lattice more stable, ultimately stabilizing FA-based perovskites. Additionally, the subsurface modification reduces defects and simultaneously tunes the valence band alignment, thereby increasing the charge carrier lifetime and improving carrier-selective transfer. Consequently, the resultant PSCs achieve a stabilized power conversion efficiency of similar to 25%. Moreover, these PSCs exhibit excellent stability, retaining 96% initial efficiency after 6,000 h of storage in a dry box with similar to 20% relative humidity at 25 degrees C and 95% of their initial efficiency after over 3,000 hmaximum power point test under simulated AM1.5 illumination.

Abstract:Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have emerged as a strong contender for next-generation display and information technologies. However, similar to perovskite solar cells, the poor operational stability remains the main obstacle toward commercial applications. Here we demonstrate ultra-stable and efficient PeLEDs with extraordinary operational lifetimes (T50) of 1.0x10^4 h, 2.8x10^4 h, 5.4x10^5 h, and 1.9x10^6 h at initial radiance (or current densities) of 3.7 W/sr/m2 (~5 mA/cm2), 2.1 W/sr/m2 (~3.2 mA/cm2), 0.42 W/sr/m2 (~1.1 mA/cm2), and 0.21 W/sr/m2 (~0.7 mA/cm2) respectively, and external quantum efficiencies of up to 22.8%. Key to this breakthrough is the introduction of a dipolar molecular stabilizer, which serves two critical roles simultaneously. First, it prevents the detrimental transformation and decomposition of the alpha-phase FAPbI3 perovskite, by inhibiting the formation of lead and iodide intermediates. Secondly, hysteresis-free device operation and microscopic luminescence imaging experiments reveal substantially suppressed ion migration in the emissive perovskite. The record-long PeLED lifespans are encouraging, as they now satisfy the stability requirement for commercial organic LEDs (OLEDs). These results remove the critical concern that halide perovskite devices may be intrinsically unstable, paving the path toward industrial applications.

Abstract:Tin (Sn)-based perovskites as promising alternatives of Pb analogues have attracted increased attention for their ideal optical bandgap, low toxicity, and high carrier mobility but are still subject to an uncontrollable crystallization process and Sn(II)-induced serious defects and thus poor photovoltaic performance and unsatisfactory stability. Herein, we propose a strategy to construct a fluid flexible polymer scaffold by introducing an eco-friendly polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymer with plenty of ether bond groups (C-O-C) in an FASnI(3) precursor to regulate the nucleation and growth of perovskite grains and fabricate uniform and full coverage perovskite films with lower defect density. We demonstrate that the hydrogen-bond interactions between FA(+) and C-O-C and Lewis acid-base complexation between uncoordinated Sn and C-O-C groups can effectively regulate film crystallization behavior, improve perovskite film coverage, and reduce defect state density. Importantly, PEG as a fluid flexible polymer scaffold during the annealing process can cross-link the adjacent perovskite grains and relieve the stress between grains. With this method, we obtain high-quality PEG-modified FASnI(3) perovskite films with lager grain size, higher coverage without pinholes, lower trap state density, and higher carrier lifetime. The optimized device achieves an optimal PCE of 7.53% under reverse scan and the unencapsulated device maintains more than 90% of the initial PCE after aging for 720 h in a N-2 glovebox.

Abstract:Controlling interfacial reactions is critical for zinc oxide (ZnO)-based inverted perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs), boosting the external quantum efficiency (EQE) of the near-infrared device to above 20%. However, violent interfacial reactions between the bromine-based perovskites and ZnO-based films severely limit the performance of inverted green PeLEDs, whose efficiency and stability lag far behind those of their near-infrared counterparts. Here, a controllable interfacial amidation between the bromine-based perovskites and magnesium-doped ZnO (ZnMgO) film utilizing caprylyl sulfobetaine (SFB) is realized. The SFB molecules strongly interact with formamidinium bromide, decelerating the amidation reaction between formamidinium and carboxylate groups on the ZnMgO film, thus regulating the crystallization of FAPbBr3. Combined with the passivation of benzylamine, a FAPbBr3 bulk film directly deposited on a ZnMgO substrate with single-crystal characteristics is obtained, exhibiting a high photoluminescence quantum yield of above 80%. The resultant PeLEDs demonstrate a peak EQE of exceeding 20% at a high luminance of 120,000 cd m-2 and a half lifetime of 26 min at 11,000 cd m-2, representing the state-of-the-art inverted green electroluminescence. This work resolves the crucial issues of violent interfacial reactions and provides a strategy toward inverted green PeLEDs with outstanding performance.
Ionic-liquid Induced Enhanced Performance of Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHP) have attracted a great deal of attention as promising light-emitting materials, because of their low-cost production via simple solution processing, high color purity, and easily tunable bandgaps. Nevertheless, the fabrication of OIHP films for light-emitting diodes generally requires complicated post-treatments, such as an anti-solvent dripping process, owing to the poor film forming property of the perovskite precursor solution. In this work, we employed an ionic liquid, methylammonium acetate (MAAc), as an additive to optimize the growth of FAPbBr(3)perovskite films via an anti-solvent-free approach. The influence of MAAc on the crystallization kinetics of FAPbBr(3)phase and optoelectronic properties of the resulting perovskite films have been systematically investigated. Our results demonstrate that MAAc is an effective modifier for creating perovskite films with reduced grain size, homogeneous grain distribution, and smooth surface, leading to an enhanced average lifetime of the excitons. Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) containing FAPbBr(3)films obtained via incorporating 10 vol% MAAc as an additive exhibited considerably suppressed leakage current, and a significant enhancement in current efficiency (CE) from 0.027 to 4.85 cd A(-1). These findings reveal that the incorporation of a suitable additive could play a beneficial role in the formation of well-optimized perovskite films, which would ultimately lead to the realization of PeLEDs with improved performance.

Abstract:The promising tin perovskite solar cells (PSCs) suffer from the oxidation from Sn2+ to Sn4+, leading to a disappointed conversion efficiency far from what they deserve, along with poor stability. In this work, PEABr is employed to form an ultrathin-low-dimensional perovskite layer on the surface of FASnI3 absorber film to improve the interface of perovskite/PCBM in the inverted planar device structure of "ITO/PEDOT:PSS/perovskite/PCBM/BCP/electrode". The device efficiency has been enhanced from 4.77% to 7.86% by this PEABr treatment. A series of characterizations prove that this modification can improve the crystallinity of the FASnI3 perovskite by incorporating Br and form an ultrathin-low-dimensional perovskite layer at the interface which leads to the effective suppression of Sn2+ oxidation, the improved band level alignment and the decrease of the defect density. Those effects contribute to the obvious enhancement of device conversion efficiency. Moreover, this treatment also leads to remarkably enhanced device stability with approximate 80% of initial efficiency after 350 hours' light soaking while the control device fails within 140 hours. This work definitely deepens our understanding to the suppression effect of PEABr on the oxidation of Sn2+ and paves a new way to fabricate promising tin halide PSCs by facile interface engineering.

Crystal Growth Regulation of α‐FAPbI3 Perovskite Films for High‐Efficiency Solar Cells with Long‐Term Stability

Abstract:A strategy of 4‐fluorobenzamide (FBAD) molecular controlled perovskite crystallization is proposed to suppress the fast reaction between the FAI and PbI2 for high‐quality α‐FAPbI3 films. The optimized solar cell achieves a champion device power conversion efficiency of 24.08% with excellent stability. This study offers an efficient approach to incorporate the only additive of FBAD to produce high‐quality perovskite films for high‐performance solar cells. The two‐step sequentially deposition strategy has been widely used to produce high‐performance FAPbI3‐based solar cells. However, due to the rapid reaction between PbI2 and FAI, a dense perovskite film forms on top of the PbI2 layer immediately and blocks the FAI diffusion into the bottom of the PbI2 film for a complete reaction, which results in a low‐efficiency and limited reproducibility of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, high‐quality α‐FAPbI3 perovskite films by crystal growth regulation with 4‐fluorobenzamide additives is fabricated. The additives can interact with FAI to suppress the fast reaction between the FAI and PbI2 and effectively passivate the under‐coordinated Pb2+ or I‐ defects. As a result, α‐FAPbI3 perovskite films with low trap density and large grain size are prepared. The modified PSCs present a high‐power conversion efficiency of 24.08%, maintaining 90% of their initial efficiency after 1400 h in high humidity. This study provides an efficient strategy of synergistic crystallization and passivation to form high‐quality α‐FAPbI3 films for high‐performance PSCs.

Perovskite light-emitting diodes based on solution-processed metal-doped nickel oxide hole injection layer

Abstract:Formamidinium lead bromide (FAPbBr3) perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have attracted great attention due to their remarkable performances of low cost, high color purity and tunable band gap. However, in a typical FAPbBr3 perovskite light-emitting diode(LED), PEDOT:PSS, with hygroscopic and acidic nature, serves as a hole injection layer (HIL), thus leading to the device stability to decrease seriously. Device stability is one critical issue that needs improving for future applications. Here in this study, the nickel oxide (NiO) film prepared by the solution method is adopted as the HIL of the FAPbBr3 perovskite LED to substitute detrimental PEDOT:PSS. Compared with the control device with PEDOT:PSS HIL, the resulting LED based on NiO film has the operating lifetime twice as great as that based on the PEDOT:PSS film. For further enhancing the performance of FAPbBr3 LED, two metal dopants (Cs and Li) are introduced to improve the hole injection capability of NiO film and the charge carriers’ balance of device. With Hall measurements, both NiO and Cs/Li-doped NiO demonstrate a full p-type semiconductor characteristic. Increasing the doping concentration in the film can increase the carrier concentration and reduce the carrier mobility. This decreased carrier mobility results from the increased scattering due to grain boundaries and impurity phases, seriously at high Cs/Li concentration. As a result, the device, based on the NiO film (doping 2 mol% Cs) shows the best performance with a maximum brightness value of 2970 cd/m2, current efficiency of 43 cd/A and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 11.0%, thus its efficiency is increased nearly by twice compared with that of the PEDOT:PSS-based device. The results pave the way for making highly efficient and stability perovskite LEDs based on FAPbBr3 NCs.

Abstract:The commercial viability of fluorescent materials is critically contingent on their thermal stability. Recent interest has converged on lead-free double perovskites (DPs), renowned for their optical properties mirroring those of traditional lead-based counterparts and superior atmospheric stability. However, these materials encounter significant fluorescence degradation in thermal environments, a challenging scenario given the high temperatures endemic to the surfaces of optoelectronic devices during prolonged operation, detrimentally impacting the fluorescent attributes of lead-free DPs. To address this challenge, in situ synthesis of lead-free DP nanocrystals (NCs) within KIT-6 mesoporous molecular sieves is proposed, yielding Cs 2 AgIn 0.98 Bi 0.02 Cl 6 @KIT-6 NCs with enhanced optical qualities. Experimental results demonstrate a marked enhancement in the fluorescence thermal stability of these NCs, attributed to the protective KIT-6 shell layer. Subjected to high power operation (100 mA) for 270 minutes, the fabricated orange light-emitting diode (LED) device maintained 80% of initial luminous efficiency, despite the resultant elevated surface temperature of 326.8 K. Therefore, this novel in situ assembly approach significantly bolsters the operational stability of lead-free DPs, paving the way for their potential commercial applications.

Abstract:A multifunctional crystallization control strategy by ingenious vapor design is developed for preparing high‐quality perovskite films. The target perovskite films exhibit efficient energy transfer and minimized charge loss. Consequently, a series of red perovskite light‐emitting diodes with record peak external quantum efficiency over 32%, along with remarkable half‐lifetime are obtained. Efficient and stable red perovskite light‐emitting diodes (PeLEDs) demonstrate promising potential in high‐definition displays and biomedical applications. Although significant progress has been made in device performance, meeting commercial demands remains a challenge in the aspects of long‐term stability and high external quantum efficiency (EQE). Here, an in situ crystallization regulation strategy is developed for optimizing red perovskite films through ingenious vapor design. Mixed vapor containing dimethyl sulfoxide and carbon disulfide (CS2) is incorporated to conventional annealing, which contributes to thermodynamics dominated perovskite crystallization for well‐aligned cascade phase arrangement. Additionally, the perovskite surface defect density is minimized by the CS2 molecule adsorption. Consequently, the target perovskite films exhibit smooth exciton energy transfer, reduced defect density, and blocked ion migration pathways. Leveraging these advantages, spectrally stable red PeLEDs are obtained featuring emission at 668, 656, and 648 nm, which yield record peak EQEs of 30.08%, 32.14%, and 29.04%, along with prolonged half‐lifetimes of 47.7, 60.0, and 43.7 h at the initial luminances of 140, 250, and 270 cd m−2, respectively. This work provides a universal strategy for optimizing perovskite crystallization and represents a significant stride toward the commercialization of red PeLEDs.

Abstract:In this paper, we have demonstrated an efficient perovskite light-emitting device (PeLED) by improving perovskite crystallization. The improved perovskite crystallization has been achieved by pretreating the underneath poly (3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) layer with N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent before single-step spin-coating the perovskite, which results in a prolonged wet environment during the perovskite thermal annealing process to promote the grain growth. The improved perovskite crystallization induces a perovskite thin film with higher surface coverage, fewer defects, and larger grain size with less scattering of grain boundaries. As a result, the PeLEDs exhibit maximum external quantum efficiency of 0.728% and maximum luminance of 2088 cd/m2, which represent a significant improvement over the control devices. Moreover, perovskite films with improved crystalline quality have proved its beneficial effect on the device stability.

Abstract:Despite the high efficiency achieved at present, perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) still suffer from poor device stability, even in quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) perovskites with high stability potential. In this work, we propose using a copolymer, ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), as an additive in anti-solvent to enhance the device stability of the PeLEDs. EVA regulates the crystallization process, which suppresses the phase change-induced material degradation to some extent. Moreover, the hydrophobic feature of EVA allows it to protect the perovskite layer against moisture and further increases the device stability. In addition, the ester group of EVA passivates the trap states in the perovskites. As a result, the EVA-modified PeLEDs show notably enhanced device stability (T80 of 80 min at relative humidity >45%) and device efficiency (22.9 cd/A) than the standard PeLEDs (47 min and 17.4 cd/A, respectively).

Abstract:The segregation of cations in mixed FA/Cs perovskite films is induced by the uncontrollable crystallization of cations. By introducing biuret additive, the hydrogen bonding interaction of the additive and FA cation balances crystallization rate. The crystal quality and cations distribution of perovskite films are significantly improved. As a result, green PeLEDs with an external quantum efficiency of 28.8% are obtained. Perovskite light‐emitting diodes (PeLEDs) present potential applications for next‐generation displays due to their excellent luminescent properties and solution processing. The formamidinium‐caesium lead bromide (FAxCs1−xPbBr3) mixed cation strategy is one of the primary methods to achieve high‐performance of Cs‐dominate PeLEDs system. However, the inhomogeneous distribution of cations is detrimental to the photoelectronic performance of Cs‐dominated PeLEDs. Here, in mixed FA/Cs perovskite films, it is observed that Cs, Br and trace Pb elements precipitated on the surface of the perovskite films. It is found that the segregation of cations is induced by the uncontrollable crystallization process of Cs/FA cations. By introducing biuret additive, the hydrogen bonding interaction of biuret and FA cation balances crystallization rate, which therefore significantly improves the crystal quality and cations distribution of perovskite films. As a result, green PeLEDs with a high external quantum efficiency of 28.8% are obtained, and represent five times enhancement in half‐life time (T50) of 2.48 h at an initial luminance of 100 cd m−2 relative to the control device. The results help to understand the relationship between cationic distribution and PeLEDs properties, offering significant insights for modulating the performance of PeLEDs.
