Abstract:The overall objective of this IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) Special Issue on high-frequency-link power-conversion systems is, therefore, to bring out the highlights of the ongoing world-wide activities in this area of advanced research to expose, analyze, and resolve the critical research and developmental challenges. The Special Issue received a total of 132 manuscripts for review considerations of which 35 manuscripts have been accepted for final publication. These publications encompass all four broad categories of high-frequency-link power-conversion systems (i.e., dc/ac, ac/dc, ac/ac, and dc/dc converters) with broad applicability in the following areas of application: photovoltaic energy, wind energy, electric vehicles, fuel-cell energy, energy storage, uninterruptible power systems, motor drives, high-frequency-ac power distribution systems, high-voltage direct- current transmission, active load emulator, smart/micro grid, solid-state transformers, induction heating, railway traction drive, pulsed power, plug-in hybrid-electric-vehicle, battery charging, inductive power transfer. Abstract:With the increasing concern about climate change, environmental pollution, and sustainable development, the energy system is evolving towards a low-carbon form powered by a large share of renewable energy. Renewable generation from wind and solar is intermittent and volatile, posing great challenges to the secure and economical operation of power systems which requires simultaneous balance between power demand and supply. In this regard, various energy storage, including battery, pumped storage, compressed-air storage, flywheel, supper-capacitor, etc., are recognized as indispensable technologies to deal with the intermittency from renewables and facilitate the low-carbon transition of power systems. Energy storage can be implemented in different parts of the power supply chain from generation-side to grid-side and demand-side, and can benefit the power system operation in multiple time scales from seasonal energy balance to near-real-time stability control.

Abstract:The power system worldwide is currently undergoing a rapid and transformative shift driven by decarbonization and digitization. The global goal of decarbonization in response to climate change has driven the evolution of smart grids toward high, or even 100%, renewable penetration. Meanwhile, traditional electricity consumers are transforming into prosumers who simultaneously consume and produce electricity. More flexible resource types continue to emerge and rise on the demand side. They have emerged as highly effective solutions to integrate and coordinate a diverse range of distributed energy resources that offer increased resilience, flexibility, and sustainability during the decarbonization of power systems.

Abstract:Distributed energy resources (DERs) are any energy resources in the electrical distribution systems, which can produce electricity, consume or store energy in a controlled manner, or be utilized to improve energy efficiency. They are typically smaller in scale than the traditional large-generation facilities. DERs include distributed generation units, energy storage facilities including electric vehicles, and controlled loads. Power electronic technologies, as the focus of this Special Issue, are critical to enabling the integration, protection, performance, and interoperability of DERs in power systems. DERs are rapidly growing in the global electricity market and are entering into power systems as an integral part of the system thanks to the increasing penetration of renewable energy and energy storage units. The technologies for DERs have advanced significantly over the past two decades and so have the DER interconnection standards. In addition to meeting the requirements for power system specifications, safety, and protection, DERs are required to support grid operation in recently developed interconnection standards by providing functions of voltage and frequency ride-throughs, voltage and frequency regulations, or inertial responses.

Abstract:Abstract Under the combined effects of national carbon reduction requirements, strong volatility and randomness at the new energy end, and a large amount of source load at the load end, the planning and operation characteristics of the new power system will also undergo fundamental changes, and energy storage planning and configuration will become the most suitable solution. This paper explores the optimal configuration of energy storage capacity within emerging power systems. Using a distribution network heavily reliant on renewable energy as a case study, we employed an echo state network to optimize the balance of energy storage capacity. Numerical experiments and case studies were conducted to validate the efficacy of this approach. Our research aims to furnish a robust and practical methodology for optimizing energy storage capacity in power systems, thereby offering substantial support towards achieving carbon reduction targets and fostering sustainable development within the energy sector.

Abstract:Future power grids face various challenges due to a rapidly increasing share of renewable energy resources and increasing interplay with other energy sectors. Distributed energy resources (DERs) such as wind, solar, energy storage, combined heat and power plants, electric vehicles, and smart loads become prevalent. As shown in Figure 1, it has become an inevitable choice for the energy revolution to develop an integrated energy system that realizes the deep integration of new technologies with distributed energy and diversifies (cold, heat, electricity, gas, etc.) demand. Besides, we are moving towards an integrated energy system on an unprecedented scale. In the continuous development of integrated energy systems, the elements of participation and interaction are becoming more complex. The integration of variable sources and the efficient and synergistic utilization of these energies will be a key focus in the future development. This issue contains ten research articles focusing on modeling and analysis methods for IES, advanced technologies for DERs and microgrid, active distribution network, impact of DERs interconnection on the distribution network, etc. The paper by Cao et al. proposed the concept of shared ESS (Shared-ESS) for microgrid owner/ operator and applied it to the economic optimal dispatch of a microgrid cluster. The microgrids can achieve the peer-to-peer (P2P) transaction among each other with the use of the Shared-ESS, which significantly improves the energy utilization efficiency. The numerical analysis shows that the Shared-ESS can significantly reduce the energy bills of microgrid owner/operator, shift the usage of energy during peak time, and facilitate the renewable energy consumption. The orderly deregulation of planned electricity generation and consumption is an important measure for electricity market reform in several countries. Under the plan-market double-track mechanism (PMDM) implemented, a modified linear bidding function of generation companies was first proposed by He et al., and the unified clearing price of unilateral generation market is determined accordingly. Simulations based on data from a provincial electricity market in China illustrate that the market power can be reduced through a reasonable proportion of planned electricity designed by the power exchange. The paper by Chen et al. discusses a passive sliding mode control strategy of MMC-UPFC to achieve the advantages of both the passive controller and sliding mode controller. An unbalanced grid treatment strategy is also presented with the series side of MMC-UPFC. Abstract:Three billion people around the world live in severe energy poverty, including 1.1 billion who live completely off-grid. Providing affordable energy access to them can dramatically impact their living standard, health, education, productivity, and ability to be a part of modern society. In developing economies, the utilization of energy is also limited to some extent. Many programs and initiatives (e.g., the IEEE Empower a Billion Lives and the IEEE Smart Village) have been doing stellar work in tackling energy poverty in developing economies. However, much remains to be done to crowdsource relevant innovation to accelerate the deployment of energy access solutions in the affected areas, including the developing economies. According to the previous programs and initiatives, it has been identified that power electronics is one of the key technologies to address real-life issues in energy access and utilization, water supply, rural transportation, etc., for developing economies. In this context, it calls for innovative and scalable solutions that should be for emerging applications of power electronics with an emphasis on technical innovation and business viability to rapidly and sustainably scale to a wide range of customers in developing economies. Hence, we organized this Special Issue on <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Emerging Applications of Power Electronics in Developing Economies</i> , aiming to bring together researchers, experts, policy makers, and stakeholders to tackle energy poverty issues in developing economies.
Emerging Converter Topologies and Control for Grid Connected Photovoltaic Systems

Abstract:Continuous cost reduction of photovoltaic (PV) systems and the rise of power auctions resulted in the establishment of PV power not only as a green energy source but also as a cost-effective solution to the electricity generation market. Various commercial solutions for grid-connected PV systems are available at any power level, ranging from multi-megawatt utility-scale solar farms to sub-kilowatt residential PV installations. Compared to utility-scale systems, the feasibility of small-scale residential PV installations is still limited by existing technologies that have not yet properly address issues like operation in weak grids, opaque and partial shading, etc. New market drivers such as warranty improvement to match the PV module lifespan, operation voltage range extension for application flexibility, and embedded energy storage for load shifting have again put small-scale PV systems in the spotlight. This Special Issue collects the latest developments in the field of power electronic converter topologies, control, design, and optimization for better energy yield, power conversion efficiency, reliability, and longer lifetime of the small-scale PV systems. This Special Issue will serve as a reference and update for academics, researchers, and practicing engineers to inspire new research and developments that pave the way for next-generation PV systems for residential and small commercial applications.
Multi-objective Optimal Scheduling of Power Systems Based on Complementary Characteristics of Heterogeneous Energy Sources

Abstract:The rapid development of modern society and economy demands on huge electric energies, resulting in an increasing consumption on fossil fuels, and the deterioration of ecological environment. As an alternative, renewable energies such as wind energy, solar energy and water energy have entered more widely into power generation industry. Because wind power and photovoltaic power have the characteristics of randomness, intermittence, volatility and reverse peak regulation, the massive abandonment of wind power and photovoltaic power and the massive waste of natural resources will be inevitable. In this point of view, the complementary characteristics of various heterogeneous energy sources, such as wind, solar, hydroelectricity and thermoelectricity, are firstly analyzed; the wind-solar consumption and system power generation cost are then investigated comprehensively; and a multi-objective power system optimal dispatch model based on the complementary characteristics of the heterogeneous energy sources is finally established. Also, a regional power grid is used as a case study for the proposed methodology to validate its feasibility.

Abstract:The integration of distributed energy resources (DER) into the smart grid through digitalization has transformed the power grid into a more decentralized system, enhancing energy efficiency and resilience during significant catastrophes. However, the integration of a large number of DERs into the transmission and distribution networks poses reliability challenges due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources. To tackle this, smart grids have been using advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and Internet of Things (IoT) devices for over two decades to improve grid observability and enable near-real-time forecasting of continent-wide anomalies. Cloud-edge-end orchestrated computing can achieve hierarchical management and innovative operational strategies, such as multi-level control and optimization of all-grid-level DERs, voltage and frequency regulation using phasor measurement units (PMU), and special protection schemes (SPS) to detect and prevent potential faults or large-scale cyber-attacks.

Abstract:Providing a reliable and economical supply of electricity to customers has always been of paramount importance of electric power systems. The failures of electric power systems can have enormous economic costs and serious negative social impacts. For example, half of India's population was affected by the massive blackout of India's power grid in 2012, which was the largest power system failure in history. Therefore, risk issues have been extensively and continuously recognized and studied from viewpoints of both power system planning and operation for decades. Moreover, recently the high renewable energy resources (RES) penetration of existing and future power systems will also have significant impact on system security and reliability due to fast fluctuation and unpredictable characteristics of RES. It can have either positive or negative impacts on the risk of power system operation and planning. The reliable and economical operation of future electric power systems requires development of new concepts, models, and methodologies for risk evaluation and management of power systems.
