Abstract:A transition towards long-term sustainability in energy systems based on a low-carbon generation mix could mitigate growing global warming threats to human society. However, the optimal structure of future systems and potential transition paths are still open questions, especially for China's power generation sector dominated by fossil fuels. In this research, robust optimization-based dynamic generation expansion planning is proposed to describe the carbon-neutral transition path for China's power generation sector. The steps required to enable a realistic transition that prevents societal disruption, and the impact of pricing policies (i.e., carbon trading and tax) on neutrality are also discussed. Simulation results show that there exist multiple potential evolution paths for China's power generation system to reach carbon neutral. For the next decades-long journey, this radical transition will require steady but evolutionary changes. The low-share (under 10%) coal scheme is more likely a better option for the carbon-neutral transition of China's power generation sector. Under the low-coal scenario, the emissions peak would be seen by 2025 with around 4543 Mt (20% above the 2015 level) of CO2, and the milestone of neutrality would be reached in 2057. By 2060, wind and solar production could provide 63% of the electricity demand, and the share of non-fossil energy generation would approach 84%. The total cost of the low-coal plan is 14% lower than that under the 100% clean energy supply scenario.

Abstract:Future power grids face various challenges due to a rapidly increasing share of renewable energy resources and increasing interplay with other energy sectors. Distributed energy resources (DERs) such as wind, solar, energy storage, combined heat and power plants, electric vehicles, and smart loads become prevalent. As shown in Figure 1, it has become an inevitable choice for the energy revolution to develop an integrated energy system that realizes the deep integration of new technologies with distributed energy and diversifies (cold, heat, electricity, gas, etc.) demand. Besides, we are moving towards an integrated energy system on an unprecedented scale. In the continuous development of integrated energy systems, the elements of participation and interaction are becoming more complex. The integration of variable sources and the efficient and synergistic utilization of these energies will be a key focus in the future development. This issue contains ten research articles focusing on modeling and analysis methods for IES, advanced technologies for DERs and microgrid, active distribution network, impact of DERs interconnection on the distribution network, etc. The paper by Cao et al. proposed the concept of shared ESS (Shared-ESS) for microgrid owner/ operator and applied it to the economic optimal dispatch of a microgrid cluster. The microgrids can achieve the peer-to-peer (P2P) transaction among each other with the use of the Shared-ESS, which significantly improves the energy utilization efficiency. The numerical analysis shows that the Shared-ESS can significantly reduce the energy bills of microgrid owner/operator, shift the usage of energy during peak time, and facilitate the renewable energy consumption. The orderly deregulation of planned electricity generation and consumption is an important measure for electricity market reform in several countries. Under the plan-market double-track mechanism (PMDM) implemented, a modified linear bidding function of generation companies was first proposed by He et al., and the unified clearing price of unilateral generation market is determined accordingly. Simulations based on data from a provincial electricity market in China illustrate that the market power can be reduced through a reasonable proportion of planned electricity designed by the power exchange. The paper by Chen et al. discusses a passive sliding mode control strategy of MMC-UPFC to achieve the advantages of both the passive controller and sliding mode controller. An unbalanced grid treatment strategy is also presented with the series side of MMC-UPFC. Meanwhile, traditional electricity consumers are transforming into prosumers who simultaneously consume and produce electricity. More flexible resource types continue to emerge and rise on the demand side. They have emerged as highly effective solutions to integrate and coordinate a diverse range of distributed energy resources that offer increased resilience, flexibility, and sustainability during the decarbonization of power systems.

Abstract:Abstract Under the combined effects of national carbon reduction requirements, strong volatility and randomness at the new energy end, and a large amount of source load at the load end, the planning and operation characteristics of the new power system will also undergo fundamental changes, and energy storage planning and configuration will become the most suitable solution. This paper explores the optimal configuration of energy storage capacity within emerging power systems. Using a distribution network heavily reliant on renewable energy as a case study, we employed an echo state network to optimize the balance of energy storage capacity. Numerical experiments and case studies were conducted to validate the efficacy of this approach. Our research aims to furnish a robust and practical methodology for optimizing energy storage capacity in power systems, thereby offering substantial support towards achieving carbon reduction targets and fostering sustainable development within the energy sector.

Abstract:In 2010, half of the total CO2 emission in China comes from the power sector. As a result, power sector plays a leading role in climate change mitigation. Firstly, this article briefly describes the status quo of CO2 emission of power sector, then it continues to analyze and evaluate appropriate measures which are applied on the supply side, demand side and power grid. As per the analysis, virtual energy, including the energy-saving capacity on both the demand side and the power grid, together with conventional energy on the supply side, are implemented for the integrated optimization model of CO2 mitigation in the power sector. Throughout the implementation of the model, the optimal plan of energy distribution with respect to both the economic benefits and mitigation benefits can be found. The results show that the development of the demand side management (DSM) and the smart grid can contribute a lot to CO2 mitigation of the power sector, reducing the CO2 emissions by 10.0% and 12.6% respectively in 2015 and 2020. © 2013 State Grid Electric Power Research Institute Press.

Lastly, we recommend some potential future directions for online optimization in the power systems domain.

Abstract:With the ever-increasing exhaustion of fossil energy,renewable energy like wind power,photovoltaic as well as energy storage system and electric vehicles is gradually gaining people”s attention.However,losses during the conversion are inevitable when new energy sources are connected to the network.By adopting the direct current(DC)distribution technology, the cost of conversion can be appreciably reduced.In addition,DC distribution network safe,economical,and highly efficient operation can be realized by designing the converter commands rationally and effectively.The characteristics and advantages of the distribution network are described first,followed by a brief account of its energy structure.Then the latest progress in two aspects,namely,the energy optimizing management technology and the coordinated control strategy among converters based on energy management optimization commands is summarized.In the end,some directions that have yet to be further improved and perfected are discussed.

Multi-Objective Energy Planning for China's Dual Carbon Goals

Abstract:Long-term dependence on fossil fuels for economic growth is a primary driver of carbon emissions in emerging economies such as China. To achieve China's dual carbon goals (DCGs) of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, we developed a dynamic input-output multi-objective optimisation model, combined with scenario setting, to explore the optimization pathways of carbon emissions, economic growth, and energy consumption. With reference to policy reports, we set different economic growth scenarios, and consider ambitious, moderate, and conservative carbon emission scenarios. The results showed that large-scale expansion of the tertiary industry is essential to realize the DCGs. The cumulative carbon emissions for the ambitious scenario were approximately 1.8 times higher than those for the conservative scenario. Further, the carbon intensity in 2030 would decrease by >69.2 % compared to the 2005 level. It means that China can achieve carbon reduction targets for 2030. We projected that future Chinese energy consumption will peak in 2035, reaching 180.64 EJ. We also optimized the installed electricity generation mix to be consistent with future development scenarios for China. This study provides valuable insights into the strategies and policy requirements to meet China's newly announced DCGs to assist in mitigating global climate change.

Abstract:In the wake of the dual-carbon objective, the call for low-carbon attributes in integrated energy systems is ascending, with an amplified imperative to integrate wind and solar power efficiently. This study introduces an advanced low-carbon optimization framework for integrated energy systems, incorporating a sophisticated time-differentiated carbon accounting mechanism attentive to consumer emissions. A nuanced carbon accounting model is crafted to assess consumer emissions with greater accuracy. Predicated on these emissions, a refined low-carbon demand response model is articulated, factoring in the influence of carbon emission factors pertinent to electricity and heat procurement on user conduct. This model integrates the consideration of heat reclaimed from methanation processes, which in turn informs the carbon emission factors associated with purchased heat, and evaluates the subsequent optimization impact on the system. The proposed model is designed to curtail the system's operational expenditures and is operationalized via the CPLEX solver. Through the establishment of various scenarios for evaluative comparison, the model is corroborated to substantially augment the system's proficiency in assimilating wind and solar energy, markedly curtail carbon emissions, and facilitate a sustainable and cost-efficient operation of the integrated energy system.

Abstract:Increasing global energy consumption and consequent greenhouse gas emissions pose great challenges to the sustainable development of international human society. Electricity constitutes the largest part of energy carriers, and the power sector is identified as the key sector with great carbon dioxide mitigation potential. Therefore, power generation expansion planning (GEP) problem has drawn great attention due to its important role in global energy supply, renewable energy utilization and carbon dioxide mitigation. Several important issues, including renewable energy sources integration, operating reserve, deregulated power market, demand response and carbon pricing mechanism should be incorporated in a GEP problem. Energy system engineering provides a methodological framework to address the complex energy, economic and environmental problems by adopting an integrated systematic approach, featuring superstructure-based modeling, mixed-integer programming, multi-objective optimization, and optimization under uncertainty. Abstract:The optimization of energy saving and application of power system under low carbon constraint is the improvement of energy security theory and economic theory. To realize the optimization of China's energy structure, develop low-carbon energy, and strengthen the reform of the energy structure, it is conducive to promoting the development of China's low-carbon economy and achieving the goal of energy conservation and emission reduction. In order to realize the sustainable development of the economy, energy, and environment, a multi-objective optimization study of this paper proposes an energy power system based on low carbon constraints. The multi-objective optimization structure of the energy power system is analyzed, the model assumptions are established, the decision variables are selected, the objective function is set, the constraints are determined, and the multi-objective optimization model of the energy power system under the low-carbon constraints is constructed to realize the multi-objective optimization of the energy power system. It can be seen from the analysis of the optimization results that the use of this optimization model can effectively reduce CO2 emissions, thereby promoting the healthy development of a low-carbon economic system.

Abstract:With the rapid development of wind power and solar power generation as well as steady development of AC and DC transmission lines, China's power system exhibits two important characteristics and trends: high proportion of renewable energy and AC/DC hybrid power grid in recent years.Based on an analysis of the present development and existing problems concerning collaborative optimization operation of AC/DC hybrid system with a high proportion of renewable energy, the key technologies demanding prompt research in four aspects are proposed, respectively.That is, situation awareness of AC/DC hybrid system under dual uncertainties of source and load, coordinated control of large renewable energy clusters considering the broadband stability constraints, flexible reconfiguration and cooperative operation with the interaction of source-grid-load in distribution systems with a high proportion of renewable energy, and multi-scale operation optimization and decision making in AC/DC hybrid system with a high proportion of renewable energy integrated.Difficulties and challenges are previewed.

Abstract:Under the global goal of "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality", new power system is facing a new energy development trend of increasing the capacity of new energy and reducing the capacity and quantity of coal power. Furthermore, new power systems are also moving towards new models such as the Energy Internet and energy storage diversification. This paper combines the needs of new power systems' "source-load interaction" and a differentiated analysis of the specific carbon emission characteristics of each subject of the Energy Internet "source-network-load-storage". This paper analyzes the energy efficiency coefficient and carbon emission factors of each link of "source-grid-load-storage". Therefore, the paper proposes a carbon control model for the Energy Internet. This paper focuses on the characteristics of coal power with the largest carbon reduction. Therefore, this article constructs a multi-dimensional low-carbonization evaluation index system for coal-fired power plants. In addition, this article designs a fusion weight calculation method for subjective and objective indicators based on CRITIC-G1. Additionally, this paper uses the ideal solution–gray relational method to evaluate the specified samples. Finally, this article verifies the effectiveness and feasibility of the implementation of the low-carbonization evaluation index system for coal-fired power plants.

Abstract:This paper focuses on controlling and optimizing a hybrid renewable energy system. The complex interactions and intermittent nature of renewable sources pose challenges to grid stability, necessitating sophisticated control strategies. The system includes a photovoltaic generator and a wind energy conversion system with a permanent magnet synchronous generator. Two key innovations are presented: i) connecting the photovoltaic generator to the grid in hybridization with the wind turbine without using a DC/DC converter, simplifying the structure, reducing losses, and ensuring grid stability and reliability; and ii) designing multi-objective controllers using the maximum power point tracking method based solely on electrical parameters, leading to fewer sensors and higher reliability compared to previous methods that required additional measurements like wind speed and irradiance. To address these challenges, a multiloop nonlinear controller is proposed, employing integral sliding mode and backstepping design techniques based on an accurate nonlinear system model. The stability of the multiloop control system is ensured using a suitable Lyapunov function.

Abstract:Distributed energy system, a decentralized low-carbon energy system arranged at the customer side, is characterized by multi-energy complementarity, multi-energy flow synergy, multi-process coupling, and multi-temporal scales (n-M characteristics). This review provides a systematic and comprehensive summary and presents the current research on distributed energy systems in three dimensions: system planning and evaluation, modeling and optimization, and operation and control. Under the regional environmental, resource, and policy constraints, planning distributed energy systems should fully integrate technical, economic, environmental, and social factors and consider device characteristics, system architecture, and source-load uncertainties. Further, this review presents four modeling perspectives for optimizing and analyzing distributed energy systems, including energy hub, thermodynamics, heat current, and data-driven. The system's optimal operation and scheduling strategies, disturbance analysis, and related control methods are also discussed from the power system and thermal system, respectively. In all, more research is required for distributed energy systems based on an integrated energy perspective in optimal system structure, hybrid modeling approaches, data-driven system state estimation, cross-system disturbance spread, and multi-subject interaction control.
