Abstract:For decades, nerve agents, such as sarin (GB), have posed a huge threat to public health and national security; thus, the development of rapid, sensitive, and selective methods for the detection of GB is critical to counter their threat. Herein, a new metal-organic framework, Eu-NDC, was prepared, and the particle size of the Eu-NDC was controlled by altering the ratio of raw materials. The nano-sized Eu-NDC emitted the strongest fluorescence intensity and longest fluorescence lifetime compared to the other Eu-NDCs synthesized, so it was used for the detection of the GB and its mimic methyl paraoxon (DMNP). GB competitively replaced the ligand in Eu-NDC, resulting in an increase in the fluorescence intensity of Eu-NDC-2 at 400 nm (I400) and a decrease in the intensity at 618 nm (I618), thereby exhibiting a ratiometric fluorescence emission in response to GB. Moreover, the fluorescence intensity ratio of I400/I618 was linearly correlated to the GB concentration in the range of 20-70 ppm. In contrast, DMNP attenuated the I618 of Eu-NDC through a competitive absorption mechanism. The Eu-NDC could instantaneously and selectively detect GB and DMNP, with detection limits of 0.25 ppm and 0.67 ppm for GB and DMNP, respectively.
