Abstract:In the present study, a new low-cost bioceramic nanocomposite based on porous hydroxyapatite (HAp) and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as surfactant was successfully obtained by a simple chemical co-precipitation. The composition and structure of the HAp-CTAB were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectrometer, and N2 adsorption/desorption analysis. The capacity of HAp-CTAB nanocomposites to remove the lead ions from aqueous solutions was studied by adsorption batch experiments and proved by Langmuir and Freundlich models. The Pb2+ removal efficiency of HAp-CTAB biocomposite was also confirmed by non-destructive ultrasound studies. The cytotoxicity assays showed that the HAp-CTAB nanocomposites did not induce any significant morphological changes of HeLa cells after 24 h of incubation or other toxic effects. Taken together, our results suggests that the obtained porous HAp-CTAB powder could be used for the decontamination of water polluted with heavy metals, such as Pb2+.

Abstract:In this study, a strontium-doped hydroxyapatite (Sr-HAP) was synthesized by the solgel method, which was used as adsorbent to remove lead ions (Pb2+) from water. The results showed that the adsorption capacities of the Sr-HAP were obviously higher than those of the HAP, the adsorption capacities of which for Pb2+ reached 651.175 mg/g. The proper increasement in the dosage of adsorbent was beneficial to the removal of Pb2+ by Sr-HAP. Meanwhile Sr-HAP had a wide applicable pH range for Pb2+. And the increasement in temperature could increase the adsorption capacity of Sr-HAP for Pb2+ to a certain extent. The Langmuir model was used to fit the isotherm adsorption process of Sr-HAP to Pb2+ in water. Compared with HAP, the specific surface area of Sr-HAP has increased by 11.1%, and the pore size distribution of Sr-HAP tended to be smaller and more uniform. Hence, Sr-HAP could be used as an ideal adsorbent to remove Pb2+ in wastewater.

Abstract:A novel adsorbent, sulfate-doped hydroxyapatite (HAP) hierarchical hollow microspheres, was prepared and developed for fluoride removal from water. The adsorbent was characterized by using SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS and BET analyses, respectively. Batch of adsorption experiments were investigated to study the fluoride removal performance. The sulfate-doped HAP showed enhanced fluoride removal performance with a defluoridation capacity of 283 mg g(-1) with initial fluoride concentration of 100 mg L-1 at 25 degrees C under neutral conditions, which was higher than other previously reported HAP-related adsorbents. The adsorption isotherm could be better defined by Freundlich model than Langmuir model. The adsorption kinetic followed the pseudo-second-order model. And the sulfate-doped HAP had a relatively high defluoridation capacity in a wide pH range of 3.0-10.0. The study of adsorption mechanism suggested that the hydroxyl groups and the sulfate groups on the surface were all involved in the fluoride adsorption, and these active sites cooperatively enhanced the fluoride removal. Abstract:Efficient and low-cost removal of fluoride from water has attracted wide attention. Here, aluminum-modified hydroxyapatite (Al-HAP) was prepared by a homogeneous hydrothermal co-precipitation method. The physicochemical properties of the Al-HAP surface were characterized by SEM, XRD, FT-IR, BET, and zeta potential, and the adsorption performances were evaluated. It showed that Al-HAP has a larger specific surface area (121.97 m2/g, which is 2.3 times larger than that of HAP), more surface-active hydroxyls and positively charged at pH less than 7, which indicate that Al-HAP is beneficial to the adsorption of negatively charged fluoride. Al-HAP had a higher fluoride adsorption capacity (56.44 mg/g) than that of HAP (28.36 mg/g), and not sensitive to the interference of coexisting ions except CO32-. Based on the adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm experiments, the proposed two-stage kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model can better describe the adsorption process. From the results of XPS and FT-IR, it indicated that the ion exchange between hydroxyl group on the surface and fluoride ions is the main driven force for the adsorption, and electrostatic adsorption is also helpful. The present study provides an improved HAP to effectively remove fluoride from water.

Abstract:Geologic fluoride pollution is a worldwide environmental problem, as numerous countries and regions are facing problems that drinking water contains excess F concentration. In this research, we adopted low-cost non-metal mineral hydroxyapatite (HAP) as adsorbent to study the geochemical behavior and mechanism of F adsorption as a function of reaction time, pH, and initial F concentration. After 48 hours, the reaction reached equilibrium and yielded a maximum adsorption amount of 21.6 mg/g at pH 6 through regression analysis using Langmuir equation. To further understand the mechanisms of F adsorption on HAP, we employed advanced geochemical approaches, such as XRD, SEM, HR-TEM, and 19F solid state NMR, to characterize the sorption products before and after reaction. It can be concluded that formation of F-Hap (s) solid-solution is the dominant mechanism at high F initial concentration (>10 ppm). This study demonstrates that hydroxyapatite is a good candidate material for fluoride removal.
Performance of Novel Hydroxyapatite Nanowires in Treatment of Fluoride Contaminated Water.

Abstract:Novel ultralong hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanowires were successfully prepared for fluoride removal for the first time. The fluoride adsorption on the HAP nanowires was studied on a batch mode. The results revealed that the adsorption data could be well described by the Freundlich model, and the adsorption kinetic followed the pseudo-second-order model. The maximum of adsorption capacity was 40.65 mg/g at pH 7.0 when the fluoride concentration is 200 mg/L. The thermodynamic parameters suggested that the adsorption of fluoride was a spontaneous endothermic process. The FT-IR, XPS and Zeta potential analysis revealed that both anion exchange and electrostatic interactions were involved in the adsorption of fluoride. Furthermore, the HAP nanowires were made into HAP membrane through a simple process of suction filtration. Membrane filtration experiments revealed that the fluoride removal capabilities depended on the membrane thickness, flow rate and initial concentration of fluoride. The as-prepared membrane could remove fluoride efficiently through continues filtration. The filtered water amount could reach 350, 192, and 64 L/m(2) when the fluoride concentrations were 4, 5 and 8 ppm, respectively, using the HAP membrane with only 150 pm thickness. The as-synthesized ultralong HAP nanowires were thus demonstrated to be very effective and biocompatible adsorbents for fluoride removal from contaminated water. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Hierarchical hollow hydroxyapatite microspheres (HHHMs) were fabricated by a facile hydrothermal process and used as an adsorbent for removing fluoride from aqueous solutions. The adsorbent was characterized by microscopic, spectroscopic, diffractometric and thermal analysis techniques. The adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms, and the effects of both the initial solution pH and coexisting anions on fluoride adsorption were evaluated. The results showed that the excellent fluoride adsorption capacity of the HHHMs was related to their hierarchical porous hollow structure and large specific surface area. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetics of the HHHMs were accurately described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, the adsorption isotherms were perfectly fitted by the Langmuir isotherms model. The adsorption process was pH dependent. The fluoride adsorption capacity decreased the most in the presence of carbonate, followed by phosphate and sulfate, and then nitrate and chloride, which had equal effect on the fluoride adsorption process. Moreover, the adsorption mechanism was studied by FT-IR, XPS, and pHpzc analysis. The results confirmed that the interaction of fluoride with the HHHMs was mainly dominated by ion exchange, electrostatic interactions, and hydrogen bonding. All these results indicated that the low-cost and scalable production of HHHMs has excellent applicability for wastewater treatment.
Investigation on the Efficiency and Mechanism of Iron and Manganese Removal from Acid Mine Drainage Using Serpentine-Loaded Manganese Oxide

Abstract:Iron and Manganese pollution were widespread in the water of northern Chinese mines, exacerbating regional water scarcity and potential ecological issues. This study aimed to remove dissolved iron and manganese from acid mine water using serpentine-loaded manganese oxide (Serp-MO) prepared by a simple coprecipitation-loaded metal method. Serp-MO was microscopically characterized, and the adsorption performance and adsorption mechanism of the Serp-MO composite adsorbent for Fe 2+ and Mn 2+ were analyzed. After loading, the specific surface area and pore volume of the particles significantly increased, and the surface pore structure improved, which was conducive to the simultaneous adsorption and removal of iron and manganese. The optimal reaction conditions for Serp-MO treatment of composite water samples with Fe 2+ and Mn 2+ mass concentrations of 20 mg/L and 5 mg/L respectively, were as follows: dosage of Serp-MO 550 mg/L, temperature 35 °C, oscillation rate 180 r/min, and reaction time 140 min. Under these conditions, the removal rates of Fe 2+ and Mn 2+ were 99.8% and 99.6%, respectively. The presence of coexistence cations Zn 2+ and Cu 2+ can inhibit the removal of Fe 2+ and Mn 2+ by Serp-MO, while SO 4 2- can promote the removal. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isothermal adsorption model well described the adsorption process of Fe 2+ and Mn 2+ by the Serp-MO. The maximum adsorption capacities of Serp-MO for Fe 2+ and Mn 2+ were 14.31 mg/g and 24.04 mg/g, representing improvements of 470.12% and 626.28%, respectively, compared to Serp-MO. The adsorption thermodynamics showed that ΔG was <0 and ΔH and ΔS were greater than 0 at all test temperatures, which was an entropy-increasing reaction, and that increasing the temperature was favorable for the removal of Fe 2+ and Mn 2+ . Based on the analysis of adsorption products, Serp-MO primarily facilitates the precipitation of iron in water, while the removal of manganese was mainly by adsorption. A regeneration study over five cycles indicated that Serp-MO possessed promising reusability potential. Furthermore, the safety leaching test indicated that the material caused minimal secondary pollution.

Abstract:Herein, novel porous hydroxyapatite sheets with high pore homogeneity are prepared via a self-assembly nonaqueous precipitation method. The optimized calcium source, phosphorus source and solvent are calcium acetate, disodium hydrogen phosphate and glycerin, respectively. Hexagonal plate-like hydroxyapatite polycrystals form in the replacement-rearrangement groups of raw materials and grow along the (002) crystal plane of the hydroxyapatite phase. Large hydroxyapatite sheets have homogeneous pore sizes of approximately 110 nm and thicknesses of approximately 20 nm. The hydroxyapatite sheets prepared via the nonaqueous precipitation method are highly active carbonate apatite. In a nonaqueous environment, assembly units of hexagonal plate-like hydroxyapatite polycrystals are triggered by the replacement and rearrangement of groups in the raw materials, and they self-assemble to form large hydroxyapatite sheets in the form of edge sharing. The degree of curvature in the process of plate-like hydroxyapatite self-assembly triggers the formation of porous hydroxyapatite sheets. This material has excellent adsorption performance for Pb2+ ions. The material developed in this work has wide application prospects in the fields of adsorption treatment of wastewater containing toxic ions (such as Pb2+), and it is expected to become a novel type of lead ion adsorbent.

Structure–Activity Relationship of Lanthanide-Incorporated Nano-Hydroxyapatite for the Adsorption of Fluoride and Lead

Abstract:The growing demand for water purification provided the initial momentum to produce lanthanide-incorporated nano-hydroxyapatite (HAP) such as HAP·CeO2, HAP·CeO2·La(OH)3 (2:1), and HAP·CeO2·La(OH)3 (3:2). These materials open avenues to remove fluoride and lead ions from contaminated water bodies effectively. Composites of HAP containing CeO2 and La(OH)3 were prepared using in situ wet precipitation of HAP, followed by the addition of Ce(SO4)2 and La(NO3)3 into the same reaction mixture. The resultant solids were tested for the removal of fluoride and lead ions from contaminated water. It was found that the composite HAP·CeO2 shows fluoride and lead ion removal capacities of 185 and 416 mg/g, respectively. The fluoride removal capacity of the composite was improved when La(OH)3 was incorporated and it was observed that the composite HAP·CeO2·La(OH)3 (3:2) has the highest recorded fluoride removal capacity of 625 mg/g. The materials were characterized using scanning electron microscopy–energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry, X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis. Analysis of results showed that Ce and La are incorporated in the HAP matrix. Results of kinetic and leaching analyses indicated a chemisorptive behavior during fluoride and lead ion adsorption by the composites; meanwhile, the thermodynamic profile shows a high degree of feasibility for fluoride and lead adsorption.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Preparation and Phosphorus Removal Performance of Zr–La–Fe Ternary Composite Adsorbent Embedded with Sodium Alginate

Abstract:Using single metal salts of zirconium, lanthanum, and iron as raw materials and sodium alginate as a cross-linking agent, a new composite adsorbent was prepared via the co-precipitation method and embedding immobilization technology, and its phosphorus adsorption performance in wastewater was evaluated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used for characterization, and a 0.5 mol·L−1 sodium hydroxide solution was used to regenerate the adsorbent. The experimental results demonstrated that the adsorption rate reached 99.88% when the wastewater volume was 50 mL, the initial concentration of phosphorus-containing wastewater was 5 mg·L−1, the pH was 5, the dosage of composite adsorbent was 0.2 g, and the adsorption time was 200 min. The prepared adsorbent could reduce the initial phosphorus concentration of 5 mg·L−1 to 0.006 mg·L−1 in simulated wastewater, and from 4.17 mg·L−1 in urban sewage to undetected (<0.01 mg·L−1), thus meeting the discharge requirements of the grade A standard of the Urban Sewage Treatment Plant Pollutant Discharge Standard (GB18918-2002). The adsorption process conformed to the Freundlich adsorption isothermal equation and quasi-second-order kinetic equation, and the adsorption reaction was exothermic and spontaneous. More importantly, after three lye regeneration tests, the removal rate of phosphorus in water remained above 68%, that is, the composite adsorbent could be reproducibly fabricated and recycled. The characterization results showed that the surface of the composite adsorbent was rough, with a complex pore structure. After phosphorus removal, the surface morphology of the composite adsorbent showed a similar honeycomb structure, with a P-H, P-O stretching vibration peak and a characteristic P2p peak. At the same time, the proportion of hydroxyl groups (M-OH) on the metal surface decreased after adsorption. Our findings thus demonstrate that the mechanism of phosphorus removal is mainly based on the coordination exchange reaction between phosphate and metal active sites and surface hydroxyl groups, resulting in the formation of granular phosphate deposits.

Abstract:In this study, Al(OH)3-hydroxyapatite nanosheet (Al(OH)3-nHAP), an adsorbent of high defluoridation capacity, was prepared based on the nano hydroxyapatite (nHAP) with lattice defect (4% calcium deficiency) brought by the addition of EDTA. And the composite was characterized by XRD, TEM-EDS, FT-IR and N2 adsorption method. The effects of adsorbent dosage, pH value, initial fluoride concentration and co-existing ions to the adsorption behaviors were studied, and then kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics, ion exchange rate, regeneration and dissolution were investigated. The maximum defluoridation capacity of Al(OH)3-nHAP nanosheet were 141.84, 171.88 and 194.2 mg/g at 298, 308 and 318 K in neutral condition with the initial fluoride concentration of 200 mg/L. The high defluoridation capacity was due to the high Al/Ca atomic ratio (1.44). The nHAP with lattice defect might help Al atoms to dope into the nHAP. About 22.14% of Al atoms was doped into the lattice of nHAP and 77.86% was loaded on the surface of nHAP by modifying. Ca9.6(PO4)6(OH)1.2 and 8.5156Al(OH)3-Ca7.5792Al2.4208(PO4)6(OH)4.4208 was proposed as the chemical formula of nHAP and Al(OH)3-nHAP synthesized in this study via calculations. The adsorption performance followed the Pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model, which was a spontaneous and endothermic process. The removal efficiency of regenerated Al(OH)3-nHAP nanosheet always stayed above 81.32% and showed good stability during the four cycles. The concentrations of Al3+, Ca2+ and F− in dissolution experiment were 0.01, 2.11 and 0.56 mg/L, respectively, indicating its safety and stability.

Abstract:A novel precipitation route has been developed for synthesis of hydroxyapatite (HAp) and chlorapatite (ClAp) powders. The powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption–desorption techniques. The results showed that the as-prepared products were the nanostructures consisting of HAp and ClAp nanoparticles with a large surface area of 104.4 and 90.9 m2·g–1, respectively. The as-prepared products were respectively used as an absorbent for the removal of Congo red (CR) from simulated wastewater. The maximum adsorption capacity for CR onto HAp and ClAp nanoparticles was determined using the Langmuir equation and found to reach up to 512.78 and 542.27 mg·g–1, respectively. The apatite such as HAp and ClAp is potential absorbents for use in dye pollution removal if synthesized on a large scale, a low price and a fast solid–liquid separation in the near future.

Abstract:Defluoridation absorbent was prepared by rare earth compounds modified chitosan via inverse suspension method.Then the effect of various parameters,such as contact time,pH,absorbent dosage,initial fluoride concentration and co-ions,on fluoride adsorption were performed.It was observed that fluoride adsorption capacity was 1.83 mg/g when contact time was 2 h,and the adsorption capacity was decreased significantly with increasing pH from 5.0～9.0.It was found that fluoride absorbent dosage affected the fluoride adsorption rate greatly as the same as the initial fluoride concentration did.Adsorption rate was increased with the increase of defluoridation absorbent dosage from 0.5～5.0 g/L and initial fluoride concentration from 1.25～20 mg/L.Carbonate and hydrogen carbonate ions could reduce fluoride adsorption capacity evidently.Finally,FITR and SEM results confirmed that a novel fluoride absorbent was successfully prepared in this work.
Kinetics and mechanism of adsorption of phosphate on fluorine-containing calcium silicate

Abstract:The nanowires-reticulated calcium silicate with a specific surface area more than 100 m2/g was prepared by a hydrothermal process using hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2, HL) and silica containing soluble fluoride, which was a by-product of fluorine industry, and the soluble fluoride in raw silica was fixed as CaSiF6 at the same time. The kinetic characteristics and mechanism of adsorbing phosphate by fluorine-containing calcium silicate were investigated in the experiments of phosphorus (P) removal from aqueous solution. The results show that the prepared fluorine-containing calcium silicate has excellent performance for adsorbing phosphate, the adsorption process appears to follow pseudo-second-order reaction kinetics and the process is mainly controlled by chemisorption. The product resulted from P adsorption is mainly composed of hydroxyapatite (HAP) and fluorapatite (FAP), which are further used as adsorbents of heavy metal ion Cd2+ in aqueous solution and display excellent performance.

Abstract:A novel composite adsorbent, hydroxyapatite/magnetite (HAp/Fe3O4), has been prepared for the purpose of removing lead ions from aqueous solution. Varying factors that may affect the adsorption efficiency, including adsorbent dosage, solution pH and coexistent substances such as humic acid and competing cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, K+ and Na+), have been investigated. It is remarkable that using the developed composite absorbent, more than 99% of Pb2+ can be removed under desirable experimental conditions. The maximum adsorption capacity for HAp/Fe3O4 is 598.8mg/g, which is much greater than that for the previously reported materials. It is found that depending on its concentrations, humic acid affects the efficiency of lead removal, but the coexisting cations, e.g., K+, Ca2+, Na+ and Mg2+, have small influence. Mechanistic studies show that the adsorption data fits the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models reasonably well and the adsorption processes obey the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. Based on the experiment results, it is concluded that dissolution/precipitation and the surface complexation are mutually responsible for lead adsorption on HAp/Fe3O4, which should be attributed to the multiple functionalities of the material.

Abstract:A biocompatible and novelly-defined adsorption membrane for rapid removal of fluoride was prepared. Both adsorption and membrane techniques were used in this research. Al(OH)3 nanoparticles modified hydroxyapatite (Al-HAP) nanowires were developed and made into Al-HAP membrane. The adsorption data of Al-HAP adsorbent could be well described by Freundlich isotherm model while the adsorption kinetic followed pseudo-second-order model. The maximum of adsorption capacity was 93.84mg/g when the fluoride concentration was 200mg/L. The adsorption mechanism was anion exchanges and electrostatic interactions. The contribution rates of HAP nanowires and Al(OH)3 nanoparticles in fluoride removal were 36.70% and 63.30%, respectively. The fixed-bed column test demonstrate that the Al-HAP was biocompatible and in a good stability during the process of water treatment. The fluoride removal abilities of Al-HAP membrane with 0.3mm thickness could reach 1568L/m2 when fluoride concentrations were 5mg/L. This study indicated that the Al-HAP membrane could be developed into a very viable technology for highly effective removal of fluoride from drinking water.

Abstract:Novel HAp porous skeleton material with high pore homogeneity is prepared via nonaqueous precipitation method combined with medium-temperature induced intermolecular polycondensation. The obtained porous skeleton HAp material, which has characteristics of highly uniform hexagonal pore, is characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Pb2+ removal performance test. The results show that the porous skeleton material presents with a highly uniform hexagonal pore. Both of the pore sizes and pore wall particles sizes have the average values of about 350 nm, with a different sizes range of 120–680 nm and 120–780 nm, respectively. HAp porous skeleton material has Pb2+ ions removal performance almost equivalent to that of nano porous sheets, because of its very uniform distribution of elements and three-dimensional structure caused by the uniform connection of the penetrating structure, group assembly, and intermolecular condensation. HAp porous skeleton material has much better separation performance and can effectively avoid problems of secondary pollution and difficulty for separation. HAp porous skeleton material is expected to be a novel excellent adsorbent for Pb 2+ ions purifying in industrial wastewater.

Abstract:Hydroxyapatite (Hap) has been shown to be an excellent sorbent for F- removal of elevated levels of fluoride in groundwater worldwide; however, the molecular mechanisms of this process have not been clearly addressed. Herein, we used 19F solid-state NMR spectroscopy to investigate F- sorption mechanisms by nanosized Hap combined with 1H NMR and 1H{19F} Rotational Echo DOble Resonance (REDOR) technology in addition to other characterization methods such as Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Nanoscale Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (NanoSIMS). Our experimental results showed that F- sorption mechanisms depend on solution pH and fluoride concentration ([F-]). At pH 7 and [F-] ≤ 50 mM, a single 19F NMR peak at -103 ppm was observed, which could be assigned to fluorapatite [Ca5(PO4)3F] (Fap) or fluoro-hydroxyapatite solid solution [Ca5(PO4)3Fx(OH)1-x; x = 0-1] (F-Hap). A simultaneous formation of fluorite (CaF2) precipitates (δF-19 = -108 ppm) was observed at higher [F-] (e.g., 100 mM), which was further confirmed by TEM and XRD analysis. The NanoSIMS and 1H{19F} REDOR analyses indicated that a dissolution-precipitation process was involved in the F- sorption on Hap. Our results strongly support the efficacy of Hap for F- removal even after several instances of regeneration, making it a cost-effective strategy for fluoride treatment.

Abstract:A novel Al–Ce hybrid adsorbent with high sorption capacity for fluoride was prepared through the coprecipitation method in this study, and its preparation conditions were optimized. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) results showed that the hybrid adsorbent was of amorphous structure and constituted by some aggregated nanoparticles. As the adsorbent had the zero point of ζ potential at pH 9.6, it was very effective in fluoride removal from aqueous solution via electrostatic interaction. The results of sorption experiments including sorption kinetics, isotherms, and the effect of solution pH showed that the sorption of fluoride on the Al–Ce adsorbent was fast and pH-dependent. Especially, the adsorbent had high sorption capacity up to 27.5mgg−1 for fluoride at the equilibrium fluoride concentration of 1mgL−1, much higher than that of the conventional adsorbents. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis and zeta potential measurement showed that the hydroxyl groups and the protonated hydroxyl groups on the adsorbent surface were involved in the fluoride adsorption.
