Abstract:In this study, we successfully synthesized rod-shaped [Au 25 (PPh 3 ) 10 (S-Adm) 5 Cl 2 ] 2+ nanoclusters using kinetic controls. The complete molecular structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. In comparison with the previously reported [Au 25 (PPh 3 ) 10 (PET) 5 Cl 2 ] 2+ clusters, both nanoclusters have an icosahedral composition of Au 13 linked by Au atoms that share a vertex, but [Au 25 (PPh 3 ) 10 (S-Adm) 5 Cl 2 ] 2+ clusters appear elongated due to the rigidity of adamantane. We conducted ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (UV-vis) measurements of [Au 25 (PPh 3 ) 10 (PET) 5 Cl 2 ] 2+ and [Au 25 (PPh 3 ) 10 (S-Adm) 5 Cl 2 ] 2+ in dichloromethane solvent to elucidate the modulation of the cluster properties of different ligands. The lowest energy absorption peak of [Au 25 (PPh 3 ) 10 (S-Adm) 5 Cl 2 ] 2+ shifted to lower energies compared to the [Au 25 (PPh 3 ) 10 (PET) 5 Cl 2 ] 2+ clusters in UV-vis measurements. Temperature-dependent absorption measurements revealed that [Au 25 (PPh 3 ) 10 (S-Adm) 5 Cl 2 ] 2+ clusters were less affected by temperature compared to [Au 25 (PPh 3 ) 10 (PET) 5 Cl 2 ] 2+ . This result is attributed to the exciton phonon coupling of [Au 25 (PPh 3 ) 10 (S-Adm) 5 Cl 2 ] 2+ clusters being weaker than [Au 25 (PPh 3 ) 10 (PET) 5 Cl 2 ] 2+ clusters. Furthermore, the absorption spectra of [Au 25 (PPh 3 ) 10 (PET) 5 Cl 2 ] 2+ and [Au 25 (PPh 3 ) 10 (S-Adm) 5 Cl 2 ] 2+ clusters were measured using different types of solutions, and it was found that the lowest energy absorption peaks of [Au 25 (PPh 3 ) 10 (S-Adm) 5 Cl 2 ] 2+ were shifted and affected by the solution at room temperature, which suggested that the [Au 25 (PPh 3 ) 10 (S-Adm) 5 Cl 2 ] 2+ clusters with solution hydrogen bonds also interacted strongly at room temperature. Theoretical calculations show that changes in ligands affect the differences in the molecular orbitals and structures of the clusters, which cause changes in the optical properties.

Abstract:The metal exchange reaction has emerged as an efficient method to synthesize ligand-protected alloy nanoclusters with precise compositions and structure. However, the understanding of the mechanism of these metal exchange processes is quite limited. Herein, the dynamic process of metal exchange of Au25(SR)18- and Ag25(SR)18- (R = CH3) nanoclusters with metal ions (Au+, Ag+, Cu2+, Cu+, Cd2+, and Hg2+) is investigated using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Computational results unveiled a multifaceted nature of the metal exchange process, dictated by several variables, including thermodynamic stability, electrochemical activity, metal affinity to ligand, and the coordination mode of metal ions. As a result of these factors, metal ions may either directly exchange with Au or Ag atoms on the icosahedral core surface by a "knock-off" mechanism or be stably adsorbed at the core-motif interface of Au25(SR)18- and Ag25(SR)18- nanoclusters. Meanwhile, we also discovered that counterions can promote adsorbed Ag and Cu atoms to diffuse into the gold core. Finally, the driving force of the galvanic reduction and antigalvanic reduction reactions is discussed. The formation of a more stable core-doping product nanocluster is the major driving force of metal exchange reactions.

Here, with the successful synthesis of Au(44)TBPA(22)Cl(2) cluster (TBPA = 4-tert-butylphenylacetylene), the structural isomer of previously reported Au44L28 clusters (L denoted as ligand) is filled, thereby providing an opportunity to explore the property evolution rules imparted by different metal core structures or different surface ligands. Time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy reveals that the difference in the core structure between Au(44)TBPA(22)Cl(2) and Au44L28 can bring nearly 360 times variation of excited-state lifetime, while only 3-24 times differences in excited-state lifetimes of the three Au44L28 nanoclusters with identical metal core but different ligands are observed, which is due to much stronger impact of the metal core than the surface ligands in the electronic energy bands of the clusters. In addition, the Au-44 clusters protected by alkyne ligands are shown to be highly effective toward the electrochemical oxidation of ethanol, compared to the Au-44 clusters capped by thiolates, which is ascribed to smaller charge transfer impedance of the former clusters. We anticipate that the study will enhance the process in controlling the nanomaterial properties by precisely tailoring metal core or surface patterns.

Abstract:The syntheses and properties of two bimetallic nanoclusters [(Au4Ag23(C CBu)(10)(dppf)(4)CI7)(PF6)(2) and [Au5Ag24(C CC6H4-p-tBu)(16)(dppf)(4)CI4](PF6)(3) are reported. The Au atoms distributed in both the cores and the surface motifs are clearly determined. The two nanoclusters show distinctly different geometric structures and electronic properties, which are attributed to the subtle changes in the surface alkynyl structures.

Abstract:The Frontispiece shows two nanoclusters are induced by the change of the surface alkynyl structures. The alkynyl −C≡C−tBu gives rise to a more spherical surface shape in 1 (red background) while −C≡CC6H4-p-tBu to a flat shape in 2 (green backgroud). The red and green also represent their different crystal colors and different UV/Vis properties. Abstract:Ligand-protected metal nanoclusters have drawn increasing research interest because of their unique physicochemical properties and practical applications. Great efforts have been made in pursuing rational synthesis of metal nanoclusters and establishing the structure-property relationships. As an indispensable part of ligand-protected metal nanoclusters, ligands play multiple roles in determining their structures and properties. In this perspective, we demonstrate the importance of ligand engineering in terms of the control of structures, optical and catalytic properties of metal nanoclusters. Furthermore, we will show that ligand engineering is prospective in structural design and preorganization of surface metal sites.
New Insights Into The Stability And Structural Evolution Of Some Gold Nanoclusters

Abstract:Revealing the stability and structural patterns is important for precisely synthesizing or assembling ligand protected nanoclusters, and even their applications as functional nanomaterials. Investigations on structural evolutional patterns and structural stability are very challenging, because structures change with the nanocluster size and the structural stability depends on both the electron structures of cores and ligand type. Herein, we propose a hybrid superatom network (hSAN) model to understand the stability of some gold nanoclusters with different kinds of ligands. In this model, 4c-2e superatom Au-4 can form conjugated superatom networks by vertex sharing, and ligands further connect the conjugated superatom networks together to form a bigger complex network, i.e. a hSAN. The stability of the clusters, including [Au-24(Cu CPh)(14)(PPh3)(4)](2+), Au-28(S-c-C6H11)(20), Au-36(SCH2Ph-tBu)(8)Cl-20, Au-40(O-MBT)(24) and Au-52(TBBT)(32) can be explained uniformly by the hSAN model. Beyond that, a new heuristic structural pattern named the Au-13 topological rule is proposed. In the light of this heuristic rule, every Au-7 bi-tetrahedral kernel is included in an Au-13 structure with quasi-O-h symmetry, i.e. as long as the Au-7 bi-tetrahedral kernel is formed, it will be surrounded by six Au atoms to form an Au-13 structure topologically. According to this understanding, a new nanocluster [Au-44(Cu=CH3)(26)(PCH3)(4)](2+) and a new nanowire with the structural evolutional formula [Au((20n+4))(Cu CH3)((12n+2))(PCH3)(4)](2+) (n = 1, 2, 3, 4,.) are predicted. Both the understanding of the stability and the structure rule are free from the type of ligand, and will be useful for the structural predictions and determinations of ligand protected gold nanoclusters.
Resonance Effects from Substituents on L-Type Ligands Mediate Synthetic Control of Gold Nanocluster Frontier Orbital Energies

Abstract:The ligands of metal nanoclusters exert a profound effect on their properties and reactivity, but a systematic explanation for these impacts comparable to that of mononuclear coordination complexes does not currently exist. We show that quantitative control of frontier orbital energies of prototypical Au-PPh3 nanoclusters is driven by resonance effects reaching from the exterior of the ligand shell to the HOMO and LUMO orbitals that are nominally located in the cluster core. Hammett studies of Au-PPh3 ligands with para- and meta- methyl and methoxy groups indicate that electronic resonance effects dominate electrostatic effects, but do not specify whether resonance effects stop at the Au-P bond or extend into the cluster core. Quantum chemical calculations show no significant trend in charge on the Au atoms, but do show a pattern of alternating shortened and lengthened bonds that includes the Au-P bond, consistent with resonance effects spanning the full cluster. Computed orbitals show a substantial contribution from atomic orbitals of the ligand substituent to the cluster-core-based HOMO orbital for the para- case, mediated by phenyl ring and phosphorous orbitals. These results suggest that a resonance picture must exist to rationalize ligand effects in nanoclusters and, potentially, nanoparticles, even in the ground state. These resonance effects can be used to engineer cluster properties and reactivity and modulate energy and charge transfer in and out of nanoclusters.

Abstract:The capability of precisely constructing bimetallic clusters with atomic accuracy provides exciting opportunities for establishing their structure-property correlations. However, the chemistry (the charge state of precursors, the property of ligands, the amount of dopant, and so forth) dictating the fabrication of clusters with atomic-level control has been a long-standing challenge. Herein, based on the well-defined Au25(SR)18 cluster (SR = thiolates), we have systematically investigated the factors of steric hindrance and electronic effect of ligands, the charge state of Au25(SR)18, and the amount of dopant that may determine the structure of AuCd clusters. It is revealed that [Au19Cd3(SR)18]- can be obtained when a ligand of smaller steric hindrance is used, while Au24Cd(SR)18 is attained when a larger steric hindrance ligand is used. In addition, negatively charged [Au25(SR)18]- is apt to form [Au19Cd3(SR)18]- during Cd doping, while Au24Cd(SR)18 is produced when neutral Au25(SR)18 is used as a precursor. Intriguingly, the reversible transformation between [Au19Cd3(SR)18]- and Au24Cd(SR)18 is feasible by subtly manipulating ligands with different steric hindrances. Most importantly, by introducing the excess amount of dopant, a novel bimetallic cluster, Au4Cd4(SR)12 is successfully fabricated and its total structure is fully determined. The electronic structures and the chirality of Au4Cd4(SR)12 have been elucidated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Au4Cd4(SR)12 reported herein represents the smallest AuCd bimetallic cluster with chirality.

The effect of ligands on the size distribution of copper nanoclusters: insights from molecular dynamics simulations

Abstract:Controlling the size distribution in the nucleation of copper particles is crucial for achieving nanocrystals with desired physical and chemical properties. However, their synthesis involves a complex system of solvents, ligands, and copper precursors with intertwining effects on the size of the nanoclusters. We combine molecular dynamics simulations and DFT calculations to provide insight into the nucleation mechanism in the presence of a triphenylphosphite ligand. We identify the crucial role of the strength of the metal-phosphine bond in inhibiting the cluster's growth. We demonstrate computationally several practical routes to fine-tune the bond strength by modifying the side groups of the additive. Our work provides molecular insight into the complex nucleation process of protected copper nanocrystals, which can assist in controlling their size distribution and, eventually, their morphology.

Abstract:Protecting clusters from coalescing by ligands has been universally adopted in the chemical synthesis of atomically precise clusters. Apart from the stabilization role, the effect of ligands on the electronic properties of cluster cores in constructing superatoms, however, has not been well understood. In this letter, a comprehensive theoretical study about the effect of an organic ligand, methylated N-heterocyclic carbene (C5N2H8), on the geometrical and electronic properties of the aluminum-based clusters XAl12 (X = Al, C and P) featuring different valence electron shells was conducted by utilizing the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It was observed that the ligand can dramatically alter the electronic properties of these aluminum-based clusters while maintaining their structural stability. More intriguingly, different from classical superatom design strategies, the proposed ligation strategy was evidenced to possess the capability of remarkably reducing the ionization potentials (IP) of these clusters forming the ligated superalkalis, which is regardless of their shell occupancy. The charge transfer complex formed during the ligation process, which regulates the electronic spectrum through the electrostatic Coulomb potential, was suggested to be responsible for such an IP drop. The ligation strategy highlighted here may provide promising opportunities in realizing the superatom synthesis in the liquid phase.

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is an effective strategy for improving the photoluminescence (PL) performance of metal nanoclusters (MNCs). However, the origin of AIE in MNCs is still not fully understood, which is pivotal for the design of AIE luminogens (AIEgens). Here, water soluble silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs) with AIE properties were synthesized. These as-synthesized non-luminescent Ag NCs will become photoluminescent when transferred from water to ethanol, and the emission peak was redshifted from ∼560 to ∼600 nm and largely intensified with the addition of Cu2+. The addition of Cu2+ makes a big difference in the PL properties of Ag NCs. That is, the PL will be enhanced if Cu2+ is added with the sequence “Ag NCs + Cu2++EtOH.” In contrast, the PL will be quenched if Cu2+ is added with the sequence “Ag NCs + EtOH + Cu2+.” The PL was from the supramolecular clusters formed by the assembly of capping ligands on the confined surface of individual silver clusters through weak interactions. The addition of Cu2+ could regulate the assembly structure and further affect the energy lever (p-band) through space electron interactions. These results provide new insights into the AIE process in metal nanoclusters.

Abstract:Atomic precision Au clusters with controllable atomic composition, unique molecular‐like properties and excellent biocompatibility are ideal candidates for developing materials to meet the needs of precision medicine. Their properties can be precisely controlled through configuration regulation, heteroatomic doping, and ligand regulation, which opens new opportunities for precise diagnosis and treatment of diseases. With the advantages of controllable atomic composition, unique molecular‐like properties, and excellent biocompatibility, atomic precision Au cluster is an ideal candidate for developing materials with customized biological functions to meet the needs of precision medicine. To achieve the rational design of functional materials through structural regulation at the atomic level, it is important to clarify the relationship between the structure and properties of Au clusters. With the development of synthesis methodology, a variety of structural regulation methods of Au clusters have been developed, providing new opportunities for structure–activity relationship establishment and precision medicine application. This review introduces the synthesis and structure regulation methods of atomic precision Au clusters, and the effects of structural regulation on the physicochemical properties are further described. At the same time, the applications of Au clusters in precision medicine, including the detection of biomolecules, functional imaging, and disease therapy are discussed, as well as the recent studies around their biosafety. At last, it also briefly summarizes the current problems and development directions. The present work provides potential theoretical guidance for the rational design of Au clusters with customized biological functions and is of great significance for broadening their applications in the field of precision medicine.

Abstract:The restriction of intramolecular rotation has been extensively exploited to trigger the property enhancement of nanocluster-based materials. However, such a restriction was induced mainly by the intermolecular aggregation, the direct restriction of intramolecular rotation of metal nanoclusters, which could boost their properties at the single molecular level, remains rarely explored. Here, the ligand engineering was applied to activate intramolecular interactions among the interface between peripheral ligands and metallic kernels of metal nanoclusters. For the newly reported Au 4 Ag 13 (SPhCl 2 ) 9 (DPPM) 3 nanocluster, the molecule-level interactions between the Cl terminals on thiol ligands and the Ag atoms on the cluster kernel remarkably restricted the intramolecular rotation, endowing this robust nanocluster with superior thermal stability, emission intensity, and non-linear optical properties over its cluster analogue. This work presents a novel case of the restriction of intramolecular rotation (i.e., intramolecular interaction-induced property enhancement) for empowering metal clusters at the single molecular level.

Abstract:Knowledge of the molecular formation mechanism of metal nanoclusters is essential for developing chemistry for accurate control over their synthesis. Herein, the "top-down" synthetic process of monodisperse Au-13 nanoclusters via HCl etching of polydisperse Au-n clusters ( 15 <= n <= 65) is traced by a combination of in situ X-ray/UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and time-dependent mass spectrometry. It is revealed experimentally that the HCl-induced synthesis of Au-13 is achieved by accurately controlling the etching process with two distinctive steps, in sharp contrast to the traditional thiol-etching mechanism through release of the Au(I) complex. The first step involves the direct fragmentation of the initial larger Aun clusters into metastable intermediate Au-8-Au-13 smaller clusters. This is a critical step, which allows for the secondary size-growth step of the intermediates toward the atomically monodisperse Au-13 clusters via incorporating the reactive Au(I)-Cl species in the solution. Such a secondary-growth pathway is further confirmed by the successful growth of Au-13 through reaction of isolated Au-11 clusters with AuClPPh3 in the HCl environment. This work addresses the importance of reaction intermediates in guiding the way towards controllable synthesis of metal nanoclusters.
Anion-Directed Regulation of Structures and Luminescence of Heterometallic Clusters

Abstract:Anions have been used to regulate the structures and luminescence of heterometallic clusters. Introducing ClO4- into orange-emissive, butterfly-like [(C)(Au-PPhpy2)6Ag4](BF4)6 (1, PPhpy2 = bis(2-pyridyl)phenylphosphine) leads to the formation of red-emissive [(C)(Au-PPhpy2)6Ag5(ClO4)3](ClO4)4 (2) with a novel trigonal bipyramidal structure; employing PhCO2- gives yellow-emissive, hexagram-like [(C)(Au-PPhpy2)6Ag6(PhCO2)3](BF4)5 (3). Notably, 1 exhibits weak luminescence in CH2Cl2/CH3OH = 1:1 (v:v) with a quantum yield (QY) of 0.05, whereas it was dramatically increased to 0.49 and 0.83 for 2 and 3, respectively. Theoretical calculation confirms that the involvement of anions in the electronic structures is responsible for the shifts of emission. The high QYs of 2 and 3 are attributed to the protection provided by ligands and anions. This work demonstrates that anions may serve as an extra designable factor beyond just counterions for functional metal clusters.
