Abstract:In this paper, I review the 3-D structure and differential rotation of the inner core based on seismological observations made during the past 5 years. Inner core structure appears to vary strongly on all scales (from 1000 kms to a few kms). The uppermost 100-400 km of the inner core is nearly isotropic but significant anisotropy (similar to3% on average) persists in the remainder of the inner core to the Earth's center. A new inner-core seismic triplication has been observed, providing direct evidence for a transition from isotropy to anisotropy in the inner core. The western hemisphere is much more anisotropic, averaged over the upper few hundred kms of the inner core, than the eastern hemisphere. These observations lead to a proposal of an inner-core transition zone model, with an irregular boundary separating the isotropic upper inner core (UIC) and the anisotropic lower inner core (LIC). I suggest that such a model may provide a unified explanation of both the observed depth variation and the observed lateral variation of the inner-core anisotropy, as well as of the well-known anomalous PKP(DF) waveforms along polar paths at distances of about 150degrees. Our waveform modeling of one sample of the inner core from earthquakes in the South Sandwich Islands to Alaska stations indicates a huge amplitude of anisotropy, 7-8%, in the lower inner core, which is two to three times the previous estimates of the anisotropy assuming a uniform model. Significant topography (over 100 km of relief across 30degrees distance) of the UIC/LIC boundary may explain the steep lateral gradient in the inner core previously observed along the South Sandwich Islands - Alaska path. These fine 3-D structures of the inner core provide new insights into the physical properties of the inner core as well as essential markers for the detection of the inner-core rotation. A growing body of evidence now supports the eastward rotation of the inner core (super-rotation) relative to the mantle. A westward rotation can be ruled out. The current estimates of the rotation rate range from 0.15 to 1.1degrees/yr. Inner core super-rotation has been suggested to be an artifact resulting from mantle heterogeneity, heterogeneous event magnitudes, and, in particular, event mislocations. We conclude that none of these biases could explain the observations that travel times through the inner core along certain pathways have changed, which implies an inner-core motion.
