Abstract:The inner core has the intriguing property that seismic waves traveling parallel to the Earth's spin axis arrive earlier than those traveling parallel to the equatorial plane. The travel time is some 6 s faster from pole to pole than across the equator. This difference is not the result of different polar and equatorial radii of the inner core, for it would require the inner core to be elongated at the poles by more than one third of its radius. Rather, this 6‐s travel time difference is the result of the inner core's being anisotropic; wave speeds differ for different directions of wave propagation. This anisotropy, discovered only in the last decade, is characterized by cylindrical symmetry about an axis approximately aligned with the Earth's spin axis. The anisotropy is believed to be due to a preferred orientation of anisotropic iron crystals composing the inner core, but the mechanisms responsible for creating such a preferred orientation remain uncertain. With the anisotropy now well established as a basic property of the inner core, its quantification and that temporal variations of its orientation have become a vital tool for probing the structure, composition, and dynamics of the Earth's deep interior.

Abstract:In an effort to confirm inner core anisotropy, we conducted a systematic search for PKP ray paths with various angles from the Earth's spin axis. In particular, we studied paths nearly parallel to the spin axis (polar paths) and those nearly parallel to the equatorial plane (equatorial paths). Data for earthquakes and explosions were collected from Worldwide Standardized Seismograph Network (WWSSN), Long Range Seismic Measurements (LRSM), and Global Digital Seismograph Network (GDSN). Absolute times (DF, BC) and differential times (BC‐DF, AB‐DF) as well as waveform data were examined. For all polar paths, differential times of BC‐DF consistently yield residuals of 1.5 to 3.5s larger than equatorial paths. Absolute DF time residuals exhibit anomalies of the same magnitude (1 to 4s) with DF being early along polar paths while BC residuals have no obvious correlation with the differential time anomalies. DF phases appear multi‐pathed for polar paths and are relatively simple for equatorial paths. These results coupled with previous studies suggest an axisymmetric anisotropy at the top of the inner core.

Abstract:The earth inner core is axisymmetric seismic anisotropy, and there is an angle of about 11 degrees between the symmetric axis of the inner core's seismic anisotropy and the earth axis. In this article, we discussed the origin of this anisotropy, basing on the observation of differential rotation between the solid inner core and the molten outer core. According to the theory on crystal growth from molten status, the crystal growth speed is proportional to the relative linear speed between the solid and the molten crystals. As a result, the inner core grows faster at the equator than at polar area. Under the action of gravitational force, the inner core remains quasi-orbicular. Consequently the material will flow from the equator to the polar area, resulting in an axial symmetric viscous flow. This flow is accompanied by an axial symmetric stress field, which align c-axes of hcp iron along the inner core's rotation axis, resulting in observed seismic anisotropy. As a deduction, there may be a notation as well as a precession of the inner core relative to the outer earth.

Abstract:Anisotropy of Earth’s inner core provides a key role to understand its evolution and the Earth’s magnetic field. Recently, using autocorrelations from earthquake’s coda, we found an equatorial anisotropy of the inner-inner core (IIC), in apparent contrast to the polar anisotropy of the outer-inner core (OIC). To reduce the influence of the polar anisotropy and reduce possible contaminations from the large Fresnel zone of the PKIKP2 and PKIIKP2 phases at low frequencies, we processed coda noise of large earthquakes (10,000–40,000s after magnitude ≥7.0) from stations at low latitudes (within ±35°) during 1990–2013. Using a number of improved procedures of both autocorrelation and cross-correlation, we extracted 52 array-stacked high-quality empirical Green’s functions (EGFs), an increase of over 60% from our previous study. The high-quality data allow us to measure the relative arrival times by automatic waveform cross correlation. The results show large variation (∼10.9s) in the differential times between the PKIKP2 and PKIIKP2 phases. The estimated influence of the Fresnel zone is insignificant (<1.1s), compared to the observed data variation and measurement uncertainty. The observed time residuals match very well previous IIC model with a quasi-equatorial fast axis (near Central America and the Southeast Asia) and the spatial pattern from the low-latitude measurements is similar to the previous global dataset, including the fast axis and two low-velocity open rings, thus providing further support for the equatorial anisotropy model of the IIC. Speculations for the shift of the fast axis between the OIC and the IIC include: change of deformation regimes during the inner core history, change of geomagnetic field, and a proto-inner core.

Abstract:The anisotropy in the central part of the inner core has been difficult to study because of the paucity of PKP data at antipodal distances, especially for those paths running nearly north‐south (polar paths). In this paper, we systematically search through the International Seismological Center (ISC) picks of PKIKP travel times for polar paths at near‐antipodal distances reported recently by Su and Dziewonski [1995]. Corresponding seismograms were obtained from the Worldwide Standardized Seismographs Network (WWSSN) film chip library at Lamont‐Doherty Earth Observatory. By using seismograms, we can impose quality control on the data, measure differential times (AB‐DF in this case) by cross correlation and use long‐period waveforms if available. Nonpolar paths at near‐antipodal distances are assembled as well, to address biases from lateral variation in the lowermost mantle on AB‐DF times. Our results show large AB‐DF residuals of 2 to 8 s for the polar paths at near‐antipodal distances. Moreover, the absolute DF travel times for the polar paths exhibit fast anomalies of the same magnitude relative to nonpolar paths, while AB times show no obvious difference between polar and nonpolar paths. These observations are consistent with an axisymmetric anisotropy of ∼3% around the spin axis throughout the bulk of the inner core, with the possibility of even stronger anisotropy near Earth's center. This degree of anisotropy is still greater than what the most recent models based on normal modes would indicate.

Abstract:Elastic anisotropies of epsilon-Fe under conditions at the Earth's inner core are investigated by using the generalized gradient approximation within density functional theory. We find that the elastic anisotropies of epsilon-Fe are mainly affected by high pressure (330-360 GPa), not by high temperature (3000-6000 K). The anisotropies of the compressional elastic wave (P) and the wave polarized in the basal plane (S2) are slight, with temperature from 3000 to 6000 K. The obtained orientation dependences of acoustic velocities agree well with experiments.

Abstract:Both body wave (PKP) travel times (Creager, 1992; Song and Helmberger, 1993a; McSweeney and Creager, 1993; Shearer, 1994) and fits to the splitting of core modes (Tromp, 1993) show general agreement that the top 300 km of inner core is very anisotropic. The anisotropy displays axial symmetry around the Earth's spin axis, with the polar direction 3% faster than the equatorial direction. One key problem now is the depth dependence of the inner core anisotropy. Here we extend our polar path studies to include both long‐period and short‐period modeling for the PKP phases at ranges 120° to 173°. Arrivals from the top of the inner core (PKIKP) and reflections from the inner core boundary (PKiKP) can be observed distinctly in short‐period records at ranges 130° to 140° and as waveform distortions in the long‐period records at ranges 130° to 146°. These waveforms provide a new set of data for examining the topmost 150 km of the inner core, which is not well sampled by the previous body wave travel times. Record sections of waves traversing the inner core nearly parallel to the Earth's spin axis (polar paths) from three events, two beneath the South Sandwich Islands and one along the Macquarie Ridge, recorded at World Wide Standardized Seismograph Network, Canadian Network, and Long Range Seismic Measurements stations are analyzed. Our results suggest that the top 150 km of the inner core is only weakly anisotropic (less than 1%), with strong evidence indicating that the top 60 km is not anisotropic at all.

Abstract:The inner core has a differential rotation relative to the crust and mantle, the relative linear velocity between the solid inner core and the molten outer core is the biggest at the equator and zero at pole area. As a result, the inner core grows faster at the equator than at the pole area. Abstract:One of the most intriguing features of the Earth's inner core is its temporal variability over decadal time scale. Time-varying sesismic waves traversing the inner core, from high-quality repeating earthquakes, provide unequivocal evidence for the feature. However, the mechanism of the temporal change remains in debate. There have been two competing models, differential rotation of the inner core shifting its lateral heterogeneities and the rapid localized changes of the inner core boundary (ICB). Recent studies suggest that the time-varying seismic waves originate from the interior of the inner core, rather than the ICB. Consequently, the model of differential rotation provides so far the simplest and most reasonable explanation. Inner core is inferred to rotate at the rate of 0.05～0.1 degree per year, with the possibility of decadal fluctuation. The model can reconcile all the time-varying signals observed in previous studies. The investigations on the temporal change of the inner core and its mechanism shed lights on understanding the inner workings of our planet, especially the operation of the geodynamo.
Three-dimensional structure and differential rotation of the inner core

Abstract:In this paper, I review the 3-D structure and differential rotation of the inner core based on seismological observations made during the past 5 years. Inner core structure appears to vary strongly on all scales (from 1000 kms to a few kms). The uppermost 100-400 km of the inner core is nearly isotropic but significant anisotropy (similar to3% on average) persists in the remainder of the inner core to the Earth's center. A new inner-core seismic triplication has been observed, providing direct evidence for a transition from isotropy to anisotropy in the inner core. The western hemisphere is much more anisotropic, averaged over the upper few hundred kms of the inner core, than the eastern hemisphere. These observations lead to a proposal of an inner-core transition zone model, with an irregular boundary separating the isotropic upper inner core (UIC) and the anisotropic lower inner core (LIC). I suggest that such a model may provide a unified explanation of both the observed depth variation and the observed lateral variation of the inner-core anisotropy, as well as of the well-known anomalous PKP(DF) waveforms along polar paths at distances of about 150degrees. Our waveform modeling of one sample of the inner core from earthquakes in the South Sandwich Islands to Alaska stations indicates a huge amplitude of anisotropy, 7-8%, in the lower inner core, which is two to three times the previous estimates of the anisotropy assuming a uniform model. Significant topography (over 100 km of relief across 30degrees distance) of the UIC/LIC boundary may explain the steep lateral gradient in the inner core previously observed along the South Sandwich Islands - Alaska path. These fine 3-D structures of the inner core provide new insights into the physical properties of the inner core as well as essential markers for the detection of the inner-core rotation. A growing body of evidence now supports the eastward rotation of the inner core (super-rotation) relative to the mantle. A westward rotation can be ruled out. The current estimates of the rotation rate range from 0.15 to 1.1degrees/yr. Inner core super-rotation has been suggested to be an artifact resulting from mantle heterogeneity, heterogeneous event magnitudes, and, in particular, event mislocations. We conclude that none of these biases could explain the observations that travel times through the inner core along certain pathways have changed, which implies an inner-core motion.

Abstract:Seismological studies generally suggest that the Earth’s inner core is anisotropic and the anisotropic structure changes significantly both laterally and with depth. Previous body-wave studies of the inner core have relied on ray tracing or waveform modeling using one-dimensional (1D) models. Here we present non-linear tomographic inversions of the inner core anisotropy using three-dimensional (3D) ray tracing, spline parameterization, and a large collection of PKP differential travel times. We adapt a pseudo-bending ray tracing (PBR) method in spherical coordinates for seismic rays that traverse the inner core (PKP(DF) phase). The method iteratively perturbs each discontinuity point and continuous segment of the ray through 3D earth structure so that its travel time is minimum. The 3D anisotropic structure of the inner core is approximated to the first order as 3D heterogeneous (but isotropic) structure for a given ray. The data are corrected using a scaled mantle tomographic model. The inner core anisotropy model obtained has the following major features. (1) The model has strong hemispherical and depth variation. The isotropic velocity in the topmost inner core is greater in quasi-eastern hemisphere (QEH) (40–160°E) than in quasi-western hemisphere (QWH) (other longitudes). The anisotropy is weak in QEH to the depth of 600–700km below the inner core boundary (ICB), while in QWH, the anisotropy increases at much shallower depth (about 100–200km below the ICB) to about 3–4%, then remains at about 2–4% throughout the rest of the inner core. (2) The anisotropy form changes abruptly (over a depth range of about 150km) at the radius of about 600km, slightly less than half of the inner core radius, forming a distinct inner inner core (IIC). The velocity in the IIC has maximums at equatorial and polar directions and minimum at an angle of about 40° from the equatorial plane. The velocity in the outer inner core (OIC), however, changes little for ray directions 0–40° from the equatorial plane. (3) Despite large variation of the anisotropy, the isotropic velocity (Voigt average) throughout the inner core is nearly uniform. The results suggest that the OIC is likely composed of the same type of iron crystals with uniform chemistry, but the IIC may be composed of a different type of crystal alignment, a different iron phase, or a different chemical composition. Our tests on model parameterization, mantle correction, and linear and non-linear inversion suggest the main features of our model are very robust. However, fine scale structures are likely to differ, particularly in the major transition zones, e.g., in the topmost QWH (isotropy to anisotropy), between OIC and IIC (change in the form of anisotropy), and between QEH and QWH in OIC (difference in anisotropy strength). Searches for possible waveform complications from these boundaries need to be aware of the directional dependence and geographical variation to be successful.

Abstract:It has been shown that the Earth’s inner core has an axisymmetric anisotropic structure with seismic waves traveling ∼3% faster along polar paths than along equatorial directions. Hemispherical anisotropic patterns of the solid Earth’s core are rather complex, and the commonly used hexagonal-close-packed iron phase might be insufficient to account for seismological observations. We show that the data we collected are in good agreement with the presence of two anisotropically specular east and west core hemispheres. The detected travel-time anomalies can only be disclosed by a lattice-preferred orientation of a body-centered-cubic iron aggregate, having a fraction of their [111] crystal axes parallel to the Earth’s rotation axis. This is compelling evidence for the presence of a body-centered-cubic Fe phase at the top of the Earth’s inner core.

Abstract:Relative arrival time difference of two core phases PKIIKP-PKIKP was used to constrain the structure of the Earth’s innermost inner core. The seismic data’s epicentral distance is more than 175 degrees from South America earthquake events and recorded by the CEA stations, which can clearly pick the PKIIKP and PKIKP phases. Observation data were stacked for high SNR and then were used to measure arrival time differences between PKIIKP and PKIKP, which were compared with theoretically computed results from PREM afterwards. Results further confirm that the slowest P-wave propagation direction of the innermost inner core is not along the equatorial plane, but forming an angle with it, which provide new constraints on inner core property..
Hemispherical variations in seismic velocity at the top of the Earth's inner core

Abstract:Knowledge of the seismic velocity structure at the top of the Earth's inner core is important for deciphering the physical processes responsible for inner-core growth 1 , 2 , 3 . Previous global seismic studies 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 have focused on structures found 100 km or deeper within the inner core, with results for the uppermost 100 km available for only isolated regions 10 , 11 , 12 . Here we present constraints on seismic velocity variations just beneath the inner-core boundary, determined from the difference in travel time between waves reflected at the inner-core boundary and those transmitted through the inner core. We found that these travel-time residuals—observed on both global seismograph stations and several regional seismic networks—are systematically larger, by about 0.8 s, for waves that sample the ‘eastern hemisphere’ of the inner core (40° E to 180° E) compared to those that sample the ‘western hemisphere’ (180° W to 40° E). These residuals show no correlation with the angle at which the waves traverse the inner core; this indicates that seismic anisotropy is not strong in this region and that the isotropic seismic velocity of the eastern hemisphere is about 0.8% higher than that of the western hemisphere.
Temporal Changes of the Inner Core from Globally Distributed Repeating Earthquakes

Abstract:Time-dependent travel times of seismic waves traversing the inner core from repeating earthquakes provided compelling evidence for an inner core differential motion. Here we conducted a systematic search for strong repeating earthquakes in the last three decades to examine the global pattern of temporal changes of the inner core. We performed extensive analyses on the quality of the repeating earthquakes and quantified the error (sigma(ic)) of travel time measurements from all possible sources except the inner core temporal changes. We set 2 sigma(ic) as a threshold for judging whether an inner core temporal change is significant. No significant temporal changes were found in most parts of the inner core, but large temporal changes (over 3 sigma(ic)) were observed beneath four regions in Northern Hemisphere (North Atlantic, Northeast Pacific, Russian Far East/Sea of Okhotsk, and Europe/North Africa), besides the well-known Central America anomaly in previous studies. Most large temporal changes were associated with time lapses of over 6 years and smaller distances, possibly resulting from the rotation shifting the laterally varying top 300 km of the inner core. A new path sampling North Atlantic suggested a small-scale and steep lateral velocity gradient of the inner core and a slow eastward inner core rotation of 0.051 degrees/year. Small-scale lateral variations may reconcile large difference in the estimates of the inner core rotation rate. We also observed enigmatic very large abrupt temporal changes (as short as 44 days), which may be related to disturbances caused by the great Sumatra earthquakes.

Abstract:We investigate the attenuation structure of the Earth's inner core and its relationship to the velocity structure globally and along various sampling directions, by studying the amplitude ratios and the differential travel times of the PKiKP–PKIKP and PKPbc–PKIKP phases. Our observations reveal that the amplitude ratios of these core phases, like the differential travel times, vary in both sampling direction and geographic location, and the correlation is ubiquitous between small (large) PKIKP/PKiKP or PKIKP/PKPbc amplitude ratios and large (small) differential PKiKP–PKIKP or PKPbc–PKIKP travel times. These observations indicate that the Earth's inner core is anisotropic in attenuation, and the direction of high (low) attenuation corresponds to that of high (low) velocity. Such anisotropic behaviors can be explained by different alignments of the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) iron crystals under the hypothesis that the hcp iron crystals are anisotropic in attenuation with their axis of high (low) attenuation corresponding to that of high (low) velocity.

Abstract:Seismic waves that traverse Earth's inner core along north-south paths produce unusually broad pulse shapes at long periods (compared with waves along east-west paths) and reflections from below the inner core boundary at short periods. The observations provide compelling evidence for a seismic velocity discontinuity along north-south paths about 200 kilometers below the inner core boundary separating an isotropic upper inner core from an anisotropic lower inner core. The triplication associated with such a structure might be responsible for reported waveform complexity of short-period inner core arrivals along north-south paths and, if the depth of the boundary is laterally variable, their large travel-time variation.

Abstract:[1] Depth variation in seismic anisotropy at the top 400 km of the inner core beneath the "eastern" hemisphere is investigated by comparing the differential travel times of PKP phases recorded at distances from 127degrees to 160degrees. At distances less than about 150degrees, there is no noticeable difference in differential travel times for PKP phases sampling both the polar and the equatorial paths. At greater distances, however, PKIKP phases arrive systematically earlier (about 0 similar to 0.5 second) in the polar path than in the equatorial path. These observations suggest that, in the "eastern" hemisphere, seismic anisotropy exists only in depths greater than about 200 km below the inner core boundary (ICB) with seismic velocities along the polar paths (an average of 27.6degrees from the earth's spin axis) being 0.4% faster than those along the equatorial paths.

Abstract:The last decade has witnessed an animated debate on whether the inner core rotation is a fact or an artifact. Here we examine the temporal change of inner core waves using a technique that compares differential travel times at the same station but between two events. The method does not require precise knowledge of earthquake locations and earth models. The pairing of the events creates a large data set for the application of statistical tools. Using measurements from 87 events in the South Sandwich Islands recorded at College, Alaska station, we conclude the temporal change is robust. The estimates of the temporal change range from about 0.07 to 0.10 s/decade over the past 50 yr. If we used only pairs with small inter-event distances, which reduce the influence of mantle heterogeneity, the rates range from 0.084 to 0.098 s/decade, nearly identical to the rate inferred by Zhang et al. [Zhang, J., Song, X.D., Li, Y.C., Richards, P.G., Sun, X.L., Waldhauser, F., Inner core differential motion confirmed by earthquake waveform doublets, Science 309 (5739) (2005) 1357-1360.] from waveform doublets.
