Abstract:An integration hydrogen adsorption benign component such as a metal with an oxygen-containing reactant adsorption benign component such as metal oxide allows for efficient overall water splitting in alkaline solutions and yet remains a considerable challenge. Herein, 5d transition metal oxide WO2 and WO3 (denoted as WO<i>x</i>) nanoparticles are purposely integrated with a porous Ni nanosheet array grown on nickel foam (NF) to design a strongly coupled Ni/WO<i>x</i>/NF porous nanosheet array electrocatalyst. Through the anion exchange of Ni(OH)2 nanosheets with tungstate, followed by hydrogenation treatment, abundant Ni/WO<i>x</i> interfaces with strong coupling interaction are generated. Benefiting from the strong synergies between Ni and WO<i>x</i> and the unique nanostructure, Ni/WO<i>x</i>/NF only requires the overpotentials of 42 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 395.7 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to achieve the current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm–2, respectively. Furthermore, the Ni/WO<i>x</i>/NF can achieve a current density of 10 mA cm–2 at a low cell voltage of 1.54 V in a two-electrode system. This work opens a novel avenue for the design of high-performance but low-cost electrocatalysts for overall water splitting. The Supporting Information is available free of charge at <a class="ext-link" href="/doi/10.1021/acs.inorgchem.1c00841?goto=supporting-info">https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.inorgchem.1c00841</a>.XRD patterns of the Ni(OH)2/NF; SEM images of Ni(OH)2/NF; XRD patterns of the NiW/NF-pre; SEM images of NiW/NF-pre; N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms and pore-size distribution of 500-Ni/WO<i>x</i>/NF; SEM images of 500-Ni/NF; SEM images of 500-WO<i>x</i>/NF; XRD patterns of 500-Ni/WO<i>x</i>/NF-<i>m</i> (<i>m</i> = 1, 2, and 4); SEM images of 500-Ni/WO<i>x</i>/NF-<i>m</i> (<i>m</i> = 1, 2, and 4); XRD patterns of <i>T</i>-Ni/WO<i>x</i>/NF-3 (<i>T</i> = 300, 400, and 600 °C); SEM images of <i>T</i>-Ni/WO<i>x</i>/NF-3 (<i>T</i> = 300, 400, and 600 °C); polarization curves of <i>T</i>-Ni/WO<i>x</i>/NF-3 (<i>T</i> = 300, 400, 500, and 600 °C); HER performances of 500-WO<i>x</i>/CC, 500-Ni/CC, and 500-Ni/WO<i>x</i>/CC; CV curves of 500-Ni/WO<i>x</i>/NF-<i>m</i> (<i>m</i> = 1, 2, 3, and 4), 500-Ni/NF, and 500-WO<i>x</i>/NF; calculation formula of TOF; CVs of sample 500-Ni/WO<i>x</i>/NF-3, 500-WO<i>x</i>/NF, and 500-Ni/NF in 0.2 M phosphate buffer (pH = 7) at a scan rate of 50 mV s–1; SEM images of 500-Ni/WO<i>x</i>/NF-3 after the HER stability test of 50 h; EDX spectra of 500-Ni/WO<i>x</i>/NF-3 before and after the HER stability test; high-resolution XPS spectra of Ni 2p, W 4f, and O 1s of 500-Ni/WO<i>x</i>/NF-3 after the HER stability test; polarization curves of <i>T</i>-Ni/WO<i>x</i>/NF-3 (<i>T</i> = 300, 400, 500, and 600 °C); OER performances of 500-WO<i>x</i>/CC, 500-Ni/CC, and 500-Ni/WO<i>x</i>/CC; CV curves of 500-Ni/WO<i>x</i>/NF-<i>m</i> (<i>m</i> = 1, 2, 3, and 4), 500-WO<i>x</i>/NF, and 500-Ni/NF; SEM images of 500-Ni/WO<i>x</i>/NF-3 after the OER stability test of 50 h; high-resolution XPS spectra of Ni 2p, W 4f, and O 1s of 500-Ni/WO<i>x</i>/NF-3 after the OER stability test; and comparisons of the HER and OER performances of recently reported catalysts (<a class="ext-link" href="/doi/suppl/10.1021/acs.inorgchem.1c00841/suppl_file/ic1c00841_si_001.pdf">PDF</a>)This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
