Effects of TMPDO and 4-NOH-TMPD on H2O2/HTS Catalytic System for Free Radicals Generation and Its Application

Abstract:EPR technique was used to investigate the formation and variation of free radicals on the catalyst and in the liquid phase after adsorption of 2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethyl-piperdin-4-one (TMPDO) and 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperdin-4-one oxime(4-NOH-TMPD) over hollow titanium silicalite(HTS) zeolite in the presence of H2O2. The results showed that the EPR signal of HO center dot in the HTS/H2O2 system was significantly decreased after 4-NOH-TMPD adsorbed on HTS, while the signal intensity of O-2(-center dot) free radical increased by 28 times and that of TiOO-center dot increased by more than double. Moreover, Simifonia software simulation indicated that the free radicals of TiOO-center dot (eta(2)) center dot center dot center dot 4-NOH-TMPD were formed in the HTS/H2O2/4-NOH-TMPD system, and the stabilization of the double-site adsorption of 4-NOH-TMPD in HTS/H2O2 to TiOOH was the fundamental cause for the above changes. Furthermore, it was found that as 4-NOH-TMPD added into the HTS/H2O2 system, the signal of free radicals on the catalyst almost disappeared while two new free radicals were formed due to the interaction between acetone oxime in liquid phase and Ti-OO-center dot or O-2(-center dot) free radicals, giving HTS/H2O2/4-NOH-TMP system with the catalytic activity for the oxidative coupling of acetone oxime to form 2,3-dimethy1-2,3-dinitrobutane(DMNB).

Abstract:The deactivation reason of titanium–silicon zeolites in propylene epoxidation was investigated through characterizing fresh, deactivated, and regenerated TS‐1 zeolite catalysts. The blockage of partial pore channels and the coverage of partial active sites over TS‐1 by ethers and oligomers led to the catalyst deactivation. Titanium silicalite‐1 (TS‐1) serves as an effective catalyst for propylene epoxidation in the hydrogen peroxide propylene oxide (HPPO) process, attracting wide attention from researchers and industry. Nonetheless, the TS‐1 catalyst experienced inevitable deactivation during industrial applications, which adversely impacts its lifespan. To enhance reaction stability of catalyst, the present work conducted a systematic investigation into the deactivation reason of the TS‐1 catalyst. The fresh, deactivated, and regenerated catalysts were characterized by using various analytical techniques to compare their physicochemical properties. The surface coke species of the deactivated catalysts were extracted by the Soxhlet extraction method and subsequently analyzed using GC–MS. Additionally, the pathways for by‐product formation were simulated through Gauss software. The results indicated that the so‐called coking deposits formed during the reaction predominantly consist of propylene glycol, ethers, and oligomers. These coke species covered the partial active sites on the catalyst surface, blocked the pores of the catalyst, and accordingly led to the deactivation of the catalyst, although the crystalline structure of the catalyst hardly changed after deactivation. These results provide a theoretical basis and novel insights for the rational design and development of efficient catalysts for the HPPO process.

Au/TS-1 catalyst for propylene epoxidation with H2 and O2: Effect of surface property and morphology of TS-1 zeolite

Abstract:The catalytic performances over propylene epoxidation with H 2 and O 2 (HOPO process) are significantly affected by the properties (e.g., surface properties, Ti coordination, and morphology) of titanosilicate zeolite. Introducing urea into zeolite synthesis is a simple and convenient method to modify these properties of titanosilicate zeolite. Uncalcined pore-blocked titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1, i.e., TS-1-B) with the lower urea dosage possesses more defective structure and unsaturated coordinated Ti sites verified by 29 Si nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, which results in a high initial activity and hydrogen efficiency; while the high surface acidity generated by these Ti species leads to a continuous decrease in the activity and the propylene oxide (PO) selectivity during the reaction. As the amount of urea gradually increases, the TS-1-B samples present the reduced surface defects and defective and unsaturated Ti species. Specially, TS-1-B-0.30U presents the weaker PO adsorption on PO-diffusion reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra (DRIFTS), and thus results in the high stable PO formation rate and selectivity over its Au catalyst. Furthermore, a flat-plate-like shape with a shorter thickness of 100 nm along the b-axis direction is observed on the urea-modified TS-1. Compared with the conventional ellipsoidal TS-1 with crystal sizes of 200 and 500 nm, the flat-plate-like TS-1-0.30U displays the less surface defects, unsaturated Ti species, and the weaker Lewis acid, which is favorable for the desorption and intracrystalline diffusion of PO, thus reduces the occurrence of side reactions for the improved selectivity and stability. This work may provide a reference for developing titanium-containing materials with high activity and stability over HOPO reaction.

Abstract:Titanium silicalite (TS-1) was successfully synthesized by using TPABr as the template and silica sol as silicon source in a 100 l stainless steel autoclave. IR, XRD, UV--vis, elemental analysis, and 27 Al and 31 P MAS NMR were used to characterize the synthesized products. The results show that the synthesized material has an MFI structure with high crystallinity and large crystal size and two kinds of titanium species. Trace aluminum in silica sol is also incorporated into the zeolite framework. The synthesized TS-1 exhibits high activity in the epoxidation of propylene with dilute H 2 O 2 with high selectivity to methyl mono-ethers and low selectivity to propylene oxide (PO). The low selectivity toward PO is due to the residual acidity onto TS-1. The selectivity of PO can reach up to 90% through adjusting the pH of the reaction mixture. Extra amounts of base decrease the H 2 O 2 utilization and the H 2 O 2 conversion. However, in over acid-treated TS-1 in which part removal of extra-framework titanium takes place, the utilization of H 2 O 2 is quite different: for the low Si/Ti ratio of TS-1, the H 2 O 2 utilization increases. But the utilization of H 2 O 2 does not change for the high Si/Ti ratio TS-1. Thermal analysis shows that the as-synthesized TS-1 exhibits high activity and thermal stability in the calcined range 540-900 °C.
Structured binder-free MWW-type titanosilicate with Si-rich shell for selective and durable propylene epoxidation

Abstract:Selective and durable fixed-bed catalysts are highly desirable for developing eco-efficient HPPO (hydrogen peroxide propylene oxide) process. The powder titanosilicate catalysts must be shaped before being applied in industrial processes. As the essential additives for preparing formed catalysts, binders are usually the catalytically inert components, but they would cover the surface and pore mouth of zeolite, thereby declining the accessibility of active sites. By recrystallizing the binder (silica)/Ti-MWW extrudates with the assistance of dual organic structure-directing agents, the silica binder was converted into MWW zeolite phase to form a structured binder-free Ti-MWW zeolite with Si-rich shell, which enhanced the diffusion efficiency and maintained the mechanical strength. Meanwhile, due to the partial dissolution of Si in the Ti-MWW matrix, abundant silanol nests formed and part of framework TiO4 species were transferred into open TiO6 ones, improving the accumulation and activation ability of H2O2 inside the monolith. Successive piperidine treatment and fluoridation of the binder-free Ti-MWW further enhanced the H2O2 activation and oxygen transfer ability of the active Ti sites, and stabilized the Ti-OOH intermediate through hydrogen bond formed between the end H in Ti-OOH and the adjacent Si-F species, thus achieving a more efficient epoxidation process. Additionally, the side reaction of PO hydrolysis was inhibited because the modification effectively quenched numerous Si-OH groups. Abstract:TS-1/SiO2 catalyst for the epoxidation of propylene with hydrogen peroxide in a fixed-bed reactor has been investigated. The catalyst activity decreases gradually with the online reaction time, but the selectivity of propylene epoxide is kept at about 93%. The fresh, deactivated and regenerated catalysts were characterized with X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultra-violet-visible diffuse reflectance, Brunner-Emmett-Teller method and thermogravimetric analysis, and the deactivated catalyst was regenerated with H2O2/methanol solution. Compared with the fresh catalyst, both the framework structure and the content of titanium in the framework of the deactivated and regenerated TS-1/SiO2 catalysts were not changed. The major reason of the catalyst deactivation was the blockage of the channels of the catalyst by bulky organic by-products, which covered the active centers of titanium in TS-1. The deposited materials on the deactivated TS-1/SiO2 catalyst could be removed by treatment with hydrogen peroxide/methanol solution or pure methanol; the higher the treatment temperature and the higher the concentration of H2O2 in methanol, the higher the extent of the regeneration. The regeneration treatment did not influence the product selectivity in the propylene epoxidation.

Abstract:The direct epoxidation of propylene with molecular oxygen represents a desired route for propylene oxide (PO) production with 100% theoretical atomic economy. However, this aerobic epoxidation reaction suffers from the apparent trade-off between propylene conversion and PO selectivity, and remains a key challenge in catalysis. We report that Ti-Beta zeolites containing isolated framework Ti species can efficiently catalyze the aerobic epoxidation of propylene. Stable propylene conversion of 25% and PO selectivity of up to 90% are achieved at the same time, matching the levels of industrial ethylene aerobic epoxidation processes. H-terminated pentacoordinated Ti species in Beta zeolite frameworks are identified as the preferred active sites for propylene aerobic epoxidation and the reaction is initiated by the participation of lattice oxygen in Ti-OH. These results are expected to spark new technology for the industrial production of PO toward more sustainable chemistry and chemical engineering.
Control of Ti Active-Site Microenvironment in Titanosilicate Catalysts and Its Effect on Oxidation Pathways

Abstract:The titanium (Ti) active-site microenvironment in titanosilicates is critical for oxidation performance, since it could influence oxidation pathways of the activation of H2O2, the stability of Ti-OOH species and the transfer ability of active "O" to reactant. Here, four kinds of Ti active sites in MWW-type titanosilicates were designed controllably by acid or alkali treatments, and their influences on oxidation pathways were explored. Through a series of characterizations, these microenvironments were identified, and they present different oxidation activities in this order: Ti(OSi)(4)(OTiO5)(2) << Ti(OSi)(4) < Ti(OSi)(3)OH < Ti(OSi)(3)OH(HO-Si)(6). Ti(OSi)(4)(OTiO5)(2) species cannot activate H2O2 because the framework tetrahedral Ti species in titanosilicates are shielded by extra-framework "OTiO5" (TiO6) species, leading to its inactivation in oxidation reactions. As the acid-treatment process washes off extra-framework TiO6 species, the obtained Ti(OSi)(4) species are able to activate H2O2 and present an improved catalytic activity. With prolonging the acid treatment time, the Ti(OSi)(3)OH species is formed, and its stronger Lewis acidity contributes to the activation of H2O2 for Ti-OOH species formation. Further, upon treatment of Ti-MWW with alkali, the density of Si-OH groups near Ti active sites increases, which promotes the activation of H2O2 and stability of Ti-OOH species, simultaneously. These observations provide new ideas for designing Ti active-site microenvironment, which are expected to contribute significantly to the control of oxidation pathways.
Insights into the Efficiency of Hydrogen Peroxide Utilization over Titanosilicate/h2o2 Systems

Abstract:H2O2 The key to high efficiency of utilization of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) over titanosilicate/H2O2 systems was discovered thanks to a comprehensive catalytic investigation. The H2O2 utilization efficiency depended chiefly on the competition between the epoxidation and decomposition pathways of the H2O2 reaction. In terms of the epoxidation pathway, the formation of TiAOOH species could be promoted by enhancing the intrinsic catalytic activity of titanosilicates by improvement of Lewis acid strength. Meanwhile, the ability of active "O" to transfer to reactants could be enhanced by improving the nucleophilicity of alkene (reactant), the surface hydrophobicity of zeolites, and the Oa-Ob polarizations of TiAOOH species. These were beneficial for the increase of H2O2 utilization efficiency. In the ineffective decomposition pathway, the self-decomposition of H2O2 hardly occurred within a short period of time and at a low temperature, while the oxidative decomposition of H2O2 (OD) with TiAOOH species was mainly responsible for low H2O2H2O2 utilization efficiencies. The stability of TiAOOH species could be improved by enhancing the hydrogen-bonding interactions with the addition of hydrogen-bond acceptors and the proper solvent, which was helpful for suppressing OD. Thus, the synergistic effect of regulating the intrinsic catalytic activity of titanosilicates for the formation of TiAOOH species, adjusting the hydrogen-bonding interactions for the stability of TiAOOH species, and enhancing the ability of active "O" to transfer to reactants was the key to achieving high utilization efficiency of H2O2 over titanosilicates/H2O2 systems. Abstract:The contribution introduced a new type of titanosilicate molecular sieve HTS-1-X with high specific surface area, high titanium content, hierarchical pores, hydrophobicity, and reusable by one-step dry gel conversion method using phenolic resin as a hydrophobic reagent. The HTS-1-X catalysts showed good catalytic ability in the propylene epoxidation reaction, and the high specific surface area greatly increased the conversion rate of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). By controlling the content of phenolic resin, the selectivity of propylene oxide (PO) could reach the optimal value. After five cycles of reusability, the selectivity of PO was still maintained at a high position (88.94%). Through Raman, 13C-MAS-NMR and other characterization methods, the possible preparation mechanism of phenolic resin hydrophobic modification of titanium silicalite-1 was proposed. This research put forwarded a simple and novel operation method to make high-performance and hydrophobic hierarchical porous molecular sieve, making it a highly efficient catalyst that would be widely used in the oxidation of macromolecular olefins. The simple and efficient dry gel conversion method was chosen to prepare titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1) instead of the traditional hydrothermal synthesis method. The hydrophobic carbon source (phenolic resin) was added in the one-step synthesis process, and the hydrophobic hierarchical porous HTS-1-X was successfully synthesized.
Insights into the Deactivation Mechanism of Heterogeneous Mo/H Beta-Al2o3 Catalysts for Olefin Metathesis

Abstract:On-stream deactivation during metathesis reaction of ethene and butene-2 to propene over Mo/H beta-Al2O3 catalysts was examined. TG, TPO, solid-state NMR, UV-vis, EPR, and XPS techniques were used to characterize the nature and location of carbonaceous deposits as well as the oxidation state of Mo species on the fresh, used, and regenerated catalysts. It is found that side reaction of olefin oligomerization takes place simultaneously with the metathesis reaction even at low temperature. Most of the carbonaceous species are formed at the beginning of the reaction, and long-chain alkanes are the predominant coke species. There are three types of carbonaceous deposits located at different positions within the Mo/H beta-Al2O3 catalysts. Most of the aliphatic hydrocarbons formed with time on stream are associated with molybdenum species of the catalyst. Active sites poisoned by coke and deep reduction of Mo species may be responsible for catalyst deactivation. The recovery of the activity of regenerated catalyst further proves our proposed deactivation mechanism.
Highly Active Nanosized Anatase TiO 2– x Oxide Catalysts In Situ Formed through Reduction and Ostwald Ripening Processes for Propane Dehydrogenation

Abstract:The research and development of abundant, non-toxic, low cost, and high-performance catalysts are urgently required for the production of propylene through propane dehydrogenation (PDH) reaction. Here, the pure TiO2 nanoparticles, obtained through in situ reduction, exhibit excellent catalytic PDH performance. At 600 °C, the initial propane conversion could reach 67%, and the one-pass yield of propylene was 45%. The propane conversion was 21% at 550 °C, and propene selectivity could reach as high as 94%. According to ex/in situ characterization results and Quantum chemical calculations, the dynamic formation and reaction mechanism of active sites were detailedly investigated. The reductive propane and its derivatives can react with surface lattice oxygen of nanosized anatase TiO2 to form oxygen vacancies and coordinatively unsaturated Ti cations (Ticus), which can catalyze PDH with high propene selectivity; the rate of C3H6 formation is in line with the surface oxygen vacancy concentration. Notably, the Ostwald ripening of nanosized TiO2 with high surface energy is crucial to the formation of oxygen vacancies. The agglomeration of nanosized TiO2 at high temperature makes the lattice oxygen atoms mobile and active, which are consumed abruptly and then form oxygen vacancies and Ticus more easily. It is denoted as "mutation reduction". Abstract:Epoxidation of propylene to propylene oxide (PO) with hydrogen peroxide (HPPO) is an environmentally friendly and cost-efficient process in which titanosilicates are used as catalysts. Ti-MWW is a potential industrial catalyst for this process, which involves the addition of HPPO to PO. The silanol groups generated during secondary crystallization unavoidably result in ring-opening of PO and inefficient decomposition of HPPO, which diminish the PO selectivity and the lifespan of Ti-MWW. To address this issue, we conducted post-treatment modifications of the structured Bf-Ti-MWW catalyst with potassium fluoride aqueous solutions. By quenching the silanol groups with potassium fluoride and implanting electron-withdrawing fluoride groups into the Ti-MWW framework, both the catalytic activity and HPPO utilization efficiency were increased. Moreover, the ring opening reaction of PO was prohibited. In a continuous fixed-bed liquid-phase propylene epoxidation reaction, the KF-treated structured Ti-MWW catalyst displayed an exceptionally long lifespan of 2700 h, with a PO yield of 590 g·kg −1 ·h −1 .

Abstract:One-step epoxidation of propylene to propylene oxide (PO) in TS-1/H2O2 system is a promising green and sustainable formation route. However, the TS-1 catalyst is limited by the small pore channels and inadequate intrinsic reactivity. Herein, tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) is used to modify the TS-1 skeleton structures to improve the mass transfer and intrinsic reactivity. Comparative catalytic performance tests indicate that the optimized temperature for TPAOH treatment to modify TS-1 was 90 degrees C, and the achieved H(2)O2 utilization efficiency and the PO selectivity can be over 80%. Different TPAOH treatment temperatures significantly influenced the dissolution and recrystallization behavior of TS-1, which altered the composition and microstructure in terms of the pore volume and size, surface properties, and active sites. Our findings indicated that the enlarged pore channels for favorable mass transfer, improved hydrophobic surfaces, enriched framework titanium, and reduced acid strength of titanium silicalite zeolite should be the primary reasons for the enhanced conversion and yields.
Mechanistic Insight into Propylene Epoxidation with H2O2 over Titanium Silicalite-1: Effects of Zeolite Confinement and Solvent

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to investigate the effects of zeolite confinement and solvent on propylene epoxidation with H2O2 over the titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1) catalyst. The 144T and 143T cluster models containing typical 10MR channels of TS-1 were constructed to represent the tripodal(2I) and Ti/defect sites. It was found that the confinement of the zeolite pore channel not only impacts the adsorption stability of guest molecules but also alters reaction barriers, as compared to the results obtained based on small cluster models. When dispersion corrections were considered, an enhancement of the adsorption stability of guest molecules was observed because of the important contribution from van der Waals interactions, especially for propylene adsorption. An explicit protic methanol molecule was introduced into the catalytic system to probe the influence of the solvent on propylene epoxidation, based on which a significant enhancement of CH3OH-H2O2 co-adsorption was obtained owing to H-bond formation. More importantly, the energy barrier for H2O2 dissociation was largely reduced by ∼13 kcal/mol because of the participation of the methanol in the H-transfer process and the formation of H-bond network, resulting in an alteration of the rate-limiting step. By comparison, adding an aprotic acetonitrile solvent did not have substantial effect on reaction path and kinetics. The calculation results clearly demonstrate the important role of the protic methanol solvent, which not only strengthens the adsorption of guest molecules but also promotes the kinetics for propylene epoxidation with H2O2 over TS-1 catalyst.
Epoxidation of propylene to propylene oxide catalyzed by large-grain TS-1 in supercritical CO2

Abstract:Large-grain titanium silicalite (TS-1, 3.0μm long), which is a low-cost catalyst that can easily be separated from the product and exhibits an efficient catalyst recovery, was synthesized using tetrapropylammonium bromide (TPABr) as the template. However, it exhibited very poor catalytic activity in the traditional organic solvent compared with small-grain TS-1. The epoxidation of propylene to propylene oxide (PO) using the large-grain TS-1 as the catalyst and H2O2 as the oxidant in a supercritical CO2 (scCO2) medium was then investigated. The effects of the CO2 pressure, reaction temperature, propylene pressure, cosolvent (methanol) concentration, and reaction time on the epoxidation reaction in scCO2 were investigated and compared with those of the reaction in methanol. The use of scCO2 as the reaction medium significantly improved the catalytic activity of the large-grain TS-1 and increased the PO yield from 50.1 to 83.5%. The effect of alkaline components [NaOH, NaHCO3, urea, and (NH4)2CO3] on the epoxidation reaction in scCO2 was also investigated. The addition of alkaline components had a positive effect on the selectivity to PO as well as to H2O2 utilization. The addition of (NH4)2CO3 yielded the best results, with the H2O2 conversion, PO selectivity, H2O2 utilization, and PO yield reaching 98.7%, 95.2%, 94.3%, and 88.6%, respectively. Therefore, a novel approach to PO production is introduced, which provides a basis as well as technical parameters for its further industrialization.
The electron-rich [ZnH] + species stabilized by titanium silicalite-1 zeolite for propane dehydrogenation

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation to propylene has broad application prospects, so it is of great significance to explore low-cost and environmentally friendly catalysts. Metal hydrides, as active sites, exhibit excellent dehydrogenation property. Herein, we report titanium modified [ZnH] + ([ZnH] + ···TiO 6 ) site with high activity (14.49 mmolC 3 H 6 ·g cat −1 ·h −1 ) and regeneration performance, which is derived from the in-situ conversion of [ZnOH] + in the dehydrogenation reaction. Combined with in-situ spectroscopic characterizations and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations, the unique [ZnH] + ···TiO 6 moiety was confirmed, and the evolution process from [ZnOH] + to [ZnH] + was clarified. XPS and AIMD calculations show that Zn in the [ZnH] + ···TiO 6 structure is in an electron-rich state with high H-affinity, which can effectively reduce the propyl C-H cleavage barriers based on slow-growth simulations. In general, titanium modification can effectively stabilize the [ZnH] + species and enrich the electrons density of zinc, which contribute to the enhanced PDH performance.

Abstract:In order to probe into the mechanism of solvolysis (alcoholysis/hydrolysis) of propylene oxide (PO), the formations of propylene glycol (PG), 1-methoxy-2-propanol (PPM) and 2-methoxy-1-propanol (SPM) over TS-1 catalyst with tetrahedral Ti and Ti/defect sites were systematically discussed using embedded quantum mechanical/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) approach. The results shown that the activity of PO solvolysis is closely related to the ring-opening ability of active substances, and the ring-opening ability is in the following order: Si-O(H)-Ti>Ti-OH>5MR Ti-OOH>Ti-OCH3 (tetrahedral Ti site); 3MR Ti-OOH>Ti-OH>5MR Ti-OOH>Ti-OCH3 (Ti/defect site). At tetrahedral site, the concerted mechanism is the dominant pathway for PO ring-opening to form PPM, while competitive relationship exists between stepwise and concerted mechanisms to form PG and SPM. The Si-O(H)-Ti exhibits excellent PO ring-opening activity because of its strong Brønsted acidity, but it is difficult to form. At Ti/defect site, the stepwise mechanism via PO ring-opening with 3MR Ti-OOH then successive hydrolysis/alcoholysis to form product is the dominant pathway. The overall energy barrier of optimal route is relatively lower as compared to tetrahedral Ti site. This work opens up a new path for providing more information on the detailed mechanism in solvolysis of PO over the TS-1 catalyst from the theoretical point of view.

Abstract:In order to probe into the effect of bipodal Ti species on the catalytic performance, the propylene epoxidation with H2O2 over TS-1 catalyst with bipodal Ti site has been studied using an embedded quantum mechanical/ molecular mechanics (QM/MM) approach, and the results shown that the bipodal Ti site has strong Bronsted and Lewis acidity, which not only greatly facilitates the epoxidation reaction but also lower selectivity toward the epoxy products. The excellent epoxidation activity is attributed to the Lewis acidity, in which, H2O2 easily activated to generate active intermediates (i.e., Ti-111-OOH and Ti-112-OOH) that is facile to transfer O atom to oxidize the propylene. The poor selectivity toward PO is also due to the Lewis acidity, which leads to the stronger adsorption ability of PO and excellent ring-opening ability of Ti-OH nucleophile to PO. The introduction of methoxy (CH3O) group is beneficial for the enhancement of the selectivity of PO, although it enhances the activation free energy for epoxidation to generate PO. The identifications about the relationship of the intrinsic selectivity and activity with bipodal Ti site would provide a clue for designing highly-efficient TS-1 catalysts in propylene epoxidation to PO from the theoretical point of view.
