Abstract:Particulate matter has adverse effects on the environment and human health, thus emission monitoring of particulate matter is essential for environment and human health protection. Optical methods are popular for on-line particulate matter emission monitoring due to their low cost, high sensitivity and easy maintainability. However, the measurement accuracy is susceptible to the particle size distribution of the particulate matter. To resolve this problem, a new optical method using multi-channel scattering signals and a proof-of-concept prototype sensor are proposed in this paper. According to multi-channel scattering signals, which reflect the change of particle size distribution, the prototype sensor adaptively sets the mass scattering coefficient to improve the mass concentration measurement accuracy. Compared with the state-of-the-art optical technologies, simulation results show that the relative standard deviation was reduced from 242% to 4% by our method. In the tests of our prototype sensor, the maximum relative measurement errors are 10% for di-ethylhexyl-sebacat (DEHS) monodisperse aerosols and 11% for coal smoke. Given that it is low cost, highly sensitive and easy to maintain, the new method has significant potential for precise measurement of particulate matter in mobile or stationary pollution monitoring applications.
Laboratory and field evaluation of a low-cost optical particle sizer

Abstract:Low-cost sensors are widely used to collect high-spatial-resolution particulate matter data that traditional reference monitoring devices cannot. In addition to the mass concentration, the number concentration and size distribution are also fundamental in determining the origin and hazard level of particulate pollution. Therefore, low-cost optical sensors have been improved to establish optical particle sizers (OPSs). In this study, a low-cost OPS, the Nova SDS029, is introduced, and it is evaluated in comparison to two reference instruments-the GRIMM 11-D and the TSI 3330. We first tested the sizing accuracy using polystyrene latex spheres. Then, we assessed the mass and number size distribution accuracy in three application scenarios: indoor smoking, ambient air quality, and mobile monitoring. The evaluations suggest that the low-cost SDS029 rivals research-grade optical sizers in many aspects. For example, (1) the particle diameters obtained with the SDS029 are close to the reference instruments (usually < 10%) in the 0.3-5 µm range; (2) the number of particles and mass concentration are highly correlated (r ≥ 0.99) with the values obtained with the reference instruments; and (3) the SDS029 slightly underestimates the number concentration, but the derived PM2.5 values are closer to monitoring station than the reference instruments. The successful application of the SDS029 in multiple scenarios suggests that a plausible particle size distribution can be obtained in an easy and cost-efficient way. We believe that low-cost OPSs will increasingly be used to map the sources and risk levels of particles at the city scale.
A Bipolar SMPS Network for Measuring Atmospheric Aerosols Using Natural Air Ions

Abstract:To study atmospheric aerosols, it is essential to build networks that are continuously monitoring particle number size distribution (PNSD). PNSDs are often measured using electrical mobility spectrometers such as scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) which includes a neutralizer that conditions the charge state of particles to the pre-assumed distributions. During long-term atmospheric measurement, the charge state can deviate from these assumed values. Measuring both positively and negatively charged particles using a bipolar SMPS helps to capture the variations in aerosol charge state. In this study, we set up a network of bipolar SMPSs at three urban sites and three suburban sites in six Chinese cities. Removing the conventional neutralizer, the bipolar SMPS utilizes the natural aerosol charging process by atmospheric ions. Newly developed aerosol classifiers and detectors were used. Harmonized quality assurance procedures were adopted to assure the performance and the data quality, including laboratory calibrations and intercomparisons, maintenance and monitoring during field measurements, and data inversion and validation. PNSDs are effectively measured by bipolar SMPSs using natural charging process at all six sites. During six months of field measurement in these sites, ion mobility ratios fluctuate significantly while the daily averaged values are stable and range between 0.98 to 1.01. Particle number concentrations integrated from PNSDs are consistent with those directly measured by the detectors (within a variation of 10%).

Abstract:Fine particles have promoted air quality monitoring need of humankind after their harmful effects on human health are pathologically verified. To monitor fine particle concentrations at a low cost, laser light scattering technique is favored by many researchers. While several cheap and interesting sensors are developed, little attention is paid to the measurement model, which in turn bound the sensor precision. In order to alleviate this situation, a simplified model is proposed, which can describe the nonlinear relationship between particle volume and single particle angular light flux by considering the effect of Rayleigh scattering and Fraunhofer diffraction simultaneously. The model can be employed in the signal processing of commercial low-cost particle sensors based on laser light scattering. A data-driven approach is adopted to find the optimum parameters of this model by considering different kinds of fine particles. Based on Trust-Region and Levenberg-Marquardt methods combining with robust methods, the optimum parameters of this model are obtained. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed model, comparative experiments are conducted on: a particle sensor with and without parameter optimization, a DustTrak II 8530 monitor and a reference TEOM PM2.5 monitor. The results indicated that the optimal model improves the measurement accuracy of the fine particle mass concentration by 10%.

Abstract:Electrical mobility size spectrometers are widely used to measure ambient aerosol number size distributions. A key component of these mobility systems is the charge conditioner, or neutralizer, which is used to place a stationary charge distribution on the aerosols prior to mobility analysis. Yet, there are natural air ions in the atmosphere which are constantly conditioning the charge state of atmospheric aerosols. In this study, we demonstrate that this natural charging process can be utilized by these spectrometers to measure size distributions of atmospheric aerosols without using a conventional neutralizer. This is achieved by measuring charged particles of both polarities, in contrast to only one polarity as conventionally done. The bipolar data is used to retrieve air ion properties from which the aerosol charge fractions are calculated. We deployed this new method in urban Beijing to measure atmospheric aerosols over a period of two years and verified that size distributions can be effectively measured using natural air ions. There is good agreement in aerosol size distributions when comparing this new method to a conventional spectrometer, and good agreement in total particle number concentrations measured by a condensation particle counter. Additionally, measuring charged particles of both polarities makes the uncertainties due to aerosol charging now traceable. We show that during two years of measurement in urban Beijing, the properties of ions produced by conventional neutralizers drifted due to the aging of ion sources, while the properties of natural atmospheric ions remained stable over time, despite occasional short-period fluctuations. Abstract:The distribution and dynamics of atmospheric pollutants are spatiotemporally heterogeneous due to variability in emissions, transport, chemistry, and deposition. To understand these processes at high spatiotemporal resolution and their implications for air quality and personal exposure, we present custom, low-cost air quality monitors that measure concentrations of contaminants relevant to human health and climate, including gases (e.g., O3, NO, NO2, CO, CO2, CH4, and SO2) and size-resolved (0.3-10 μm) particulate matter. The devices transmit sensor data and location via cellular communications and are capable of providing concentration data down to second-level temporal resolution. We produce two models: one designed for stationary (or mobile platform) operation and a wearable, portable model for directly measuring personal exposure in the breathing zone. To address persistent problems with sensor drift and environmental sensitivities (e.g., relative humidity and temperature), we present the first online calibration system designed specifically for low-cost air quality sensors to calibrate zero and span concentrations at hourly to weekly intervals. Monitors are tested and validated in a number of environments across multiple outdoor and indoor sites in New Haven, CT; Baltimore, MD; and New York City. The evaluated pollutants (O3, NO2, NO, CO, CO2, and PM2.5) performed well against reference instrumentation (e.g., r = 0.66-0.98) in urban field evaluations with fast e-folding response times (≤1 min), making them suitable for both large-scale network deployments and smaller-scale targeted experiments at a wide range of temporal resolutions. We also provide a discussion of best practices on monitor design, construction, systematic testing, and deployment.

Abstract:Low-cost light-scattering particulate matter (PM) sensors are often advocated for the dense monitoring networks. Recent literature has focused on evaluating their performance. Nonetheless, low-cost sensors are also considered unreliable and imprecise. Consequently, exploring techniques for anomaly detection, resilient calibration, and data quality improvement should be discussed more. In this study, we analyse a year-long acquisition campaign by positioning 56 low-cost light-scattering sensors near the inlet of an official PM monitoring station. We use the collected measurements to design and test a data processing pipeline composed of different stages, including fault detection, filtering, outlier removal, and calibration. These can be used in large-scale deployment scenarios where the quantity of sensors' data can be too high to be analysed manually. Our framework also exploits sensor redundancy to improve reliability and accuracy. Our results show that the proposed data processing framework produces more reliable measurements, reduces errors, and increases the correlation with the official reference.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Background</h3><p>Accurate individual exposure assessment is crucial for evaluating the health effects of particulate matter (PM). Various portable monitors built upon low-cost optical sensors have emerged. However, the main challenge for their application is to guarantee accuracy of measurements.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Objective</h3><p>To assess the performance of a newly developed PM sensor, and to develop methods for post-hoc data calibration to optimize its data quality.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Method</h3><p>We conducted a series of laboratory experiments and field evaluations to quantify the reproducibility within Plantower PM sensors 7003 (PMS 7003) and the consistency between sensors and two established PM<sub>2.5</sub> measurement methods [tapered element oscillating microbalances (TEOM) and gravimetric method (GM)]. Post-hoc data calibration methods for sensors were based on a multiple linear regression model (MLRM) and a random forest model (RFM). Ratios of raw and calibrated readings over the data of reference methods were calculated to examine the improvement after calibration.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>Strong correlations (≥0.82) and relatively small relative standard deviations (16–21%) between sensors were found during the laboratory and the field sampling. Compared with the reference methods, moderate to strong coefficients of determination (0.56–0.83) were observed; however, significant deviations were presented. After calibration, the ratios of PMS measurements over that of two reference methods both became convergent.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusions</h3><p>Our study validated low-cost optical PM sensors under a wide range of PM<sub>2.5</sub> concentrations (8–167 μg/m<sup>3</sup>). Our findings indicated potential applicability of PM sensors in PM<sub>2.5</sub> exposure assessment, and confirmed a need of calibration. Linear calibration methods may be sufficient for ambient monitoring using TEOM as a reference, while nonlinear calibration methods may be more appropriate for indoor monitoring using GM as a reference.</p>

Abstract:Low-cost air quality sensor networks have been increasingly used for high spatial resolution air quality monitoring in recent years. Ensuring data reliability during continuous operation is critical for these sensor networks. Using particulate matter sensor as an example, this study reports a data quality control method, including sensor selection, pre-calibration, and online inspection. It was used in developing and operating the dense low-cost particle sensor networks in two Chinese cities. Firstly, seven mainstream sensors were tested and one model of particle sensor was selected due to its better linearity and stability. For a batch of sensors of the same model, although they were calibrated after manufactured, there are differences in response toward the same concentration of pollutants. The systematical variation of sensors was corrected and unified through pre-calibration. After deploying them in the field, a data analysis method is established for online inspecting their working status. Using data from these sensors, it evaluates parameters such as intraclass correlation coefficients and normalized root mean square error. These two metrics help to construct a two-dimensional coordinate system and to classify sensors into four status, including normal, fluctuation, hotspots, and malfunction. During a one-month operation in the two cities, 8 (out of 82) and 10 (out of 59) sensors with suspected malfunctions were screened out for further on-site inspection. Moreover, the sensor networks show potential in identifying illegal emission sources that cannot be typically detected by sparse regulatory air quality monitoring stations.

Abstract:The particle number size distribution (PNSD) plays a crucial role in aerosol science and related industries. The recent surge in dense PNSD monitoring networks and measurement in harsh environments necessitates low-cost Electrical Mobility Sizers/Spectrometers (EMS). A miniature charger using the radioactive source of americium-241 charger was specifically developed for the low-cost EMS, with ion sources easily obtainable at low costs from smoke alarms. The ion concentration was over 5 × 10 12 m −3 . The measured charging efficiency of the charger aligns with the commonly used approximation formulae, while charge distributions deviate slightly from it. To solve this deviation issue, a reported inversion method is adopted which is based on the bipolar PNSD measurement. The practical use of the charger was theoretically explored, providing insights into the particle number concentration limits at commonly employed flow rates. This charger displays the potential for providing a cost-effective method of conditioning aerosol charging in large-scale or environmentally challenging PNSD measurements. Performance of a Low-Cost Sensor (LCS) Network for Long-Term Indoor and Outdoor PM2.5 Measurements at Rural Communities in Beijing, China

Abstract:BACKGROUND AND AIM: Low-cost sensors have been widely developed and applied globally to measure high temporal and spatial resolution air pollution data for exposure, epidemiology, and environmental justice studies. However, obtaining accurate and precise measures from low-cost sensors is a challenge, especially in developing countries and low-income areas, where high-caliber environmental stations are not available to provide reference data for sensor calibration. METHOD: We set up a low-cost sensor network to measure indoor and outdoor PM2.5 for four consecutive winters in 50 villages in rural Beijing, China. In each village, two sensors were deployed in different locations to measure outdoor PM2.5, and six were randomly deployed in six homes for indoor measurements. Before and after each field campaign, all low-cost sensors were co-located with Federal Equivalent Method (FEM) instruments for 7-10 days to evaluate the performance of sensors. We co-located filter-based PM2.5 samplers with both indoor and outdoor sensors in the field for later calibration. RESULTS: Sensor performance was consistently good over the four years of deployment. The Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICCs) of our low-cost sensors relative to FEM PM2.5 were larger than 0.75 with tight confidence, indicating our low-cost sensors performed well in catching hourly variation in ambient PM2.5. Including meteorological information in the linear regression between filter-based PM2.5 and time-weighted average sensor-based PM2.5 concentration did not improve the explanation of data. Calibration factors for indoor and outdoor PM2.5 were different, and varied from 1.11 to 1.14, and from 0.98 to 0.94, respectively, due to the different meteorology and emission sources of indoor and outdoor environments. CONCLUSIONS: It is essential to conduct careful calibration in the field, and our low-cost sensors performed well over multiple years. Due to the different meteorology and emission sources of indoor and outdoor environments, indoor and outdoor sensors should be calibrated separately.
[Development and Performance Evaluation of a Supermicron Particle Generation System for Aerosol Instrument Calibration].

Abstract:Accurate calibration of aerosol measurement instruments is critical for ensuring the data quality when sampling ambient particulate matter (PM) or those from emission sources. A system for calibrating these instruments was set up, which included an ultrasonic device to generate polydisperse supermicron particles, a chamber, and an aerodynamic particle spectrometer to measure particle size distribution. We verified its performance in stably generated testing aerosol with good spatial uniformity, controlled size distributions and concentrations. The testing aerosol generated had a lognormal distribution. A PM₁₀ and PM₂.₅ two-stage virtual impactor was calibrated using this online method. Collection efficiencies of PM₁₀ and PM₂.₅ stages calibrated by an off-line method using monodisperse particles were also used for comparison. The results from two different methods were consistent with each other. Though the off-line method has been widely used to calibrate PM samplers, it suffers from long experimental duration (2-3 days for calibrating one sampler). In contrast, the online method allows for a rapid calibration (less than half a day for calibrating one sampler).

Feasibility of low-cost particulate matter sensors for long-term environmental monitoring: Field evaluation and calibration

Abstract:Low-cost sensor networks offer the potential to reduce monitoring costs while providing high-resolution spatiotemporal data on pollutant levels. However, these sensors come with limitations, and many aspects of their field performance remain underexplored. During October to December 2023, this study deployed two identical low-cost sensor systems near an urban standard monitoring station to record PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations, along with environmental temperature and humidity. Our evaluation of the monitoring performance of these sensors revealed a broad data distribution with a systematic overestimation; this overestimation was more pronounced in PM10 readings. The sensors showed good consistency (R2 > 0.9, NRMSE<5 %), and normalization residuals were tracked to assess stability, which, despite occasional environmental influences, remained generally stable. A lateral comparison of four calibration models (MLR, SVR, RF, XGBoost) demonstrated superior performance of RF and XGBoost over others, particularly with RF showing enhanced effectiveness on the test set. SHAP analysis identified sensor readings as the most critical variable, underscoring their pivotal role in predictive modeling. Relative humidity consistently proved more significant than dew point and temperature, with higher RH levels typically having a positive impact on model outputs. The study indicates that, with appropriate calibration, sensors can supplement the sparse networks of regulatory-grade instruments, enabling dense neighborhood-scale monitoring and a better understanding of temporal air quality trends.
A Spectrometer for Measuring Particle Size Distributions in the Range of 3 Nm to 10 Μm

Abstract:A spectrometer combining electrical mobility sizing and aerodynamic sizing was developed to measure aerosol size distributions in the range of 3 nm to 10 μm. It includes three instruments which cover different size ranges (a nano scanning mobility particle sizer (NSMPS, 3 – 60 nm), a regular scanning mobility particle sizer (RSMPS, 40 – 700 nm), and an aerodynamic particle sizer (APS, 550 nm – 10 μm)). High voltage and sheath flow of the NSMPS and RSMPS were supplied using two home-built control boxes. A LabVIEW program was developed for spectrometer automatic operation. A linear inversion method was applied to correct particle multiple charging effects and to integrate data from the three instruments into a wide-range size distribution. Experiments were conducted to compare distributions in the overlap size ranges measured by three instruments. Good agreement between the NSMPS and RSMPS was achieved after correcting for the difference in counting efficiencies of the two particle counters. Aerodynamic size distributions reported by the APS were converted to mobility size distributions by applying an effective density method. Distributions measured by the RSMPS and APS were consistent in the overlap size range of 550 – 700 nm. A full spectrum in the size range of 3 nm to 10 μm was demonstrated by measuring aerosol generated using a mixture of different sized polystyrene latex spheres.
An Ionization-Based Aerosol Sensor and Its Performance Study

Abstract:In recent years, with the rapid development of new energy vehicles, the safety issues of lithium-ion batteries have attracted attentions from all sectors of society. Research has found that during the thermal runaway process of lithium-ion batteries, aerosol emissions usually occur earlier than other gases. Accurate and timely measurement of these aerosol concentrations can help to warn the power battery pack fires. However, existing aerosol sensors are unable to meet the requirements of real-time monitoring and high precision. This article proposes an ionization mechanism based aerosol sensor that works at principles of field emission, field charging and gas discharge, and investigates its static and dynamic response characteristics. The sensor is manufactured and assembled using Microelectro Mechanical Systems processing technology. The sensor exhibits superior performances in terms of range, sensitivity, nonlinearity, repeatability, response time, and other aspects. The study provides a new solution for current aerosol detection with great potential for application.

Abstract:Fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5) is a health hazard with numerous indoor and outdoor sources. Versatile monitors are needed to characterize PM2.5 sources, concentrations, and exposures in a range of locations and applications. Whereas low-cost light-scattering PM sensors provide real-time measurements with limited accuracy, gravimetric samples provide more accurate, albeit time-integrated, measurements. When used together, low-cost sensor data can be corrected to gravimetric samples. Here we describe the development of a portable PM2.5 monitor that features a low-cost sensor in line with an active filter sampler. Laboratory tests were conducted to determine (1) the accuracy and precision of PM2.5 concentrations derived from the filter sample and (2) correction factors for the low-cost sensor response to ammonium sulfate, Arizona road dust, urban particulate matter, and match smoke. Filter samples collected at 0.25 and 1.0 L min-1 had mean biases of -10% and -4%, relative to a tapered element oscillating microbalance, and a relative standard deviation (RSD) that ranged from 1% to 17%. The low-cost sensor correction factor varied with the test aerosol, sample flow rate, and between individual monitors. Gravimetric correction reduced the bias and RSD of ∼1 hour average concentrations measured by low-cost sensors in three collocated monitors. A week-long field experiment was also conducted to investigate how the monitor could be used to learn about sources of residential air pollution. Field data were used to identify: (1) pollution events resulting from cooking and use of a wood furnace and (2) variations in the number of air changes per hour inside the residence.

Abstract:Abstract. The mass resolution of laser desorption ionization (LDI) single-particle aerosol mass spectrometry (SPAMS) is usually low (∼500), which has been greatly improved by the recent development of the delayed ion extraction technique. However, due to large fluctuations among LDI processes during each laser shot, accurate calibration of the mass-to-charge ratio for high-resolution SPAMS (HR-SPAMS) spectra is challenging. Here we developed an automatic linear calibration method to improve the accuracy of mass-to-charge (m∕z) measurement for single atmospheric aerosol particles. Laboratory-generated sea spray aerosol and atmospheric ambient aerosol were tested. After the calibration, the fluctuation ranges of the reference ions' (e.g., Pb+ and SO4+) m∕z reaches ±0.018 for sea spray aerosol and ±0.024 for ambient aerosol in average mass spectra. With such m∕z accuracy, the HR-SPAMS spectra of sea spray aerosol can easily identify elemental compositions of organic peaks, such as Cx, CxHy and CxHyOz. While the chemical compositions of ambient aerosols are more complicated, CxHy, CxHyOz and CNO peaks can also be identified based on their accurate mass. With the improved resolution, the time series of peaks with small m∕z differences can be separated and measured. In addition, it is also found that applying high-resolution data with enhanced mass calibration can significantly affect particle classification (identification) using the ART-2a algorithm, which classify particles based on similarities among single-particle mass spectra.

Abstract:Aerosol plays an important role in a broad range of scientific disciplines, such as atmospheric chemistry and physics, fuel combustion, and human health. Current particle sizing instruments are usually bulky, complicated, and expensive, while the portable ones cannot provide sufficient measurement channels to describe the particle size distribution accurately. To address this challenge, we propose an optical sensing method to analyze the particle size distribution of aerosols based on the light scattering intensity field (LSIF). The LSIF is a set of scattering lights in all directions around the particles, which contains the scattering light signals in different observing angles. Then, the particle size distribution of the aerosol samples is retrieved by the Tikhonov regularization algorithm. A portable and low-cost aerosol sizing prototype sensor is designed to image part of the LSIF signals, where the LSIF is collected by a parabolic reflector and projected on the image sensor as an image with telecentric lenses. According to the experimental result of di-ethyl-hexyl-sebacate aerosol test, the relative measurement error of LSIF can be controlled to +/- 10%. With an integrated and cost-effective design, this particle sizing sensor shows great potential for routine field measurements outside of the laboratory.

Abstract:Airborne particulate matter (PM) mass concentrations measured by conventional monitoring stations are reliable data sources for air quality communication, pollution mapping, and exposure estimation. A high spatiotemporal density of monitoring stations can provide a better understanding of PM transport on a regional and global scale and help to reduce exposure misclassification leading to a better assessment of the health impacts associated with PM exposure. However, due to the cost and operational complexities, only a limited number of such PM monitors can be deployed. Apart from conventional measurements, PM mass concentration can be estimated from aerosol optical depth (AOD) data observations by using empirical, semi-empirical or modeling methods, but these datasets are usually compromised by weather conditions and lack of knowledge of aerosol properties. In addition to the above methods, a network of low-cost PM sensors is also a promising approach to increase the measurement density. In this study, we propose an integration of information from multiple measurement approaches. We demonstrate this approach by synergizing the data from 75 monitoring stations, 2,363 Air Box low-cost sensors (the amount of data entries is ∼10 million), and the Terra remote sensing satellite to estimate surface concentrations of PM for Taiwan Main Island during July 14 2018 to Oct 31 in 2018. A machine learning method selects the useful data from the low-cost sensor datasets, and the ordinary Kriging method is used to create a visual daily PM distribution map. The integration of datasets can enhance the overall data quantity and quality, leading to more accurate pollution maps with greater detail. The maps created from these three data sources demonstrate an approximate 30-fold synergistic improvement in the spatial resolution of PM mapping. The Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of the predicted maps was analyzed through leave-one-out cross-validation, ten-fold cross-validation, and standard data validation. It shows that including low-cost PM sensor data brings in greater detail and largely enhances the spatial distribution while maintaining the pollution mapping characteristics. The approach described here will greatly assist the validation of PM transport models and enhance the accuracy of exposure estimations in future studies.
