Abstract:Two fluorinated poly(arylene ether)s, P1 and P2, containing perfluorophenyl moieties in the main chains and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores in the side chains have been conveniently prepared by Knoevenagel condensation reaction between perfluorophenyl-containing poly(arylene ether) P and cyanoacetylated NLO chromophores 2 and 3 for the first time. The molar percentages of the pendant chromophores were estimated to be 162% and 138% for P1 and P2, respectively, and their weight percentages were both 42.3%. Both of the two polymers are thermally stable and readily soluble in common organic solvents. The glass transition temperatures (T-g's) of P1 and P2 were determined to be 186 and 192 degreesC, respectively. The in-situ second harmonic generation (SHG) measurement revealed the resonant NLO coefficient (d(33)) values of 60 and 31 pm/V for the poled films of P1 and P2, respectively. The thermal stability of the SHG signals of the polymer films was studied by the depoling experiment in air using P1 as the typical polymer, in which the decay onset of the SHG signal occurred at around 160 degreesC.

Abstract:A new series of poly(p-diethynylbenzene) derivatives with trans structure and long-conjugation side chains were synthesized. These polymers possess good solubility and thermal stability. The maximum absorptions and band gaps depend on the nature and number of the substituents. Third-order nonlinear optical properties of these polymers were characterized with second-order hyperpolarizability as large as ≈10–30 esu in the non-resonant region.

Abstract:Two pyrene derivatives were successfully synthesized via an efficient copper(I)-catalyzed azide alkyne 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition. The photophysical and electrochemical properties were characterized using ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra, fluorescence spectra, cyclic voltammograms and density functional theory modulations. These results showed that the symmetry structure of these derivatives formed an electron-delocalized organic system, which have larger effects in achieving a third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) response. The third-order nonlinear properties including the nonlinear absorption and the nonlinear susceptibilities investigated by Z-scan technique indicate that the title compounds can serve as a promising candidate for third-order NLO applications.

Abstract:A photo-cross-linked side-chain second-order nonlinear optical polymer was synthesized with bis-phenol-A as the polymer backbone. The characterization of the polymer was done by nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectra, ultraviolet spectra and dynamic mechanical analysis methods. The electro-optic film was obtained by spin-coating and corona poling then photo-cross-linked. The film showed high glass transition temperature (160°C) and improved chromophore orientation stability. An electro-optic measuring system was established based on this film. The results showed that the film has a linear electro-optic characteristic and the voltage sensitivity was higher than that of a GaAs probe.

Abstract:The synthesis of a series of thienyl-substituted pyridinium salts with different counter-anions and their second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties are described. Kurtz powder tests revealed that, out of the twelve new pyridinium salts, four possess noncentrosymmetric structures and the maximum powder second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency is 0.6 times of DAST. Single crystals of three new salts were successfully obtained from methanol by slow evaporation method. X-Ray studies exhibited that they crystallized in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c, P2(1), and P2(1)/n, respectively. (E)-4-(2-(5-(dimethylamino)thiophen-2-yl)vinyl)-1-methylpyridinium 4-hydroxybenzenesulfonate (3c) forms a hydrated noncentrosymmetric phase with a large macroscopic optical nonlinearity 0.5 times of that of DAST at the non-resonant wavelength of lambda = 2109 nm, while both (E)-4-(2-(5-(dimethylamino)thiophen-2-yl)vinyl)-1-methylpyridinium 2-amino-3,5-dimethylbenzenesulfonate (3i) and (E)-4-(2-(5-(dimethylamino)thiophen-2-yl)vinyl)-1-methylpyridinium iodide (3a) crystallize in centrosymmetric structures.

Abstract:New fluorene-linked conjugated polyquinoxaline and polyquinoline possess adequate optical transparency, excellent thermal stability and good processability. Degenerate four-wave-mixing measurements on these polymers yield nonresonant third-order susceptibilities as high as 1.1×10 -10 esu and nonresonant second-order hyperpolarizabilities per repeated unit as high as 2.0×10 -31 esu. The large nonlinearity originates from the high electron delocalization due to the planar rigid structure of the fluorene ring and the imine nitrogen of quinoxaline and quinoline.

Abstract:The controllable preparation of nonlinear optical polymers is still one of the research hotspots on nonlinear optical field. In this paper, a triazole functional polymer was designed and achieved by high-efficiency click chemistry method. The structure and properties of the polymer was characterized and evaluated with FTIR, NMR, UV, FL, DLLS and nonlinear optical analyses. The results exhibited that the polymer was successfully synthesized and has favorable nonlinear optical property, its third-order nonlinearity up to 3.66×10-10 esu.

Abstract:Two new crystals were designed and obtained: the chalcone derivative HMMP (1-(2‐hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-3-(4-(methylthio)phenyl)prop‐2-en-1-one) and the flavanone derivative 7M4MC (7‐methoxy-2-(4-(methylthio)phenyl)chroman-4-one). Yellow bulk 7M4MC single crystal with dimensions of 3 × 2 × 1 mm 3 and orange-yellow needle-like HMMP single crystal were grown by solution evaporation. 7M4MC crystal belongs to the P 2 1 space group of the monoclinic structure, which has a non-centrosymmetric structure. HMMP crystal monoclinic, belongs to the P 2 1 /m space group with a centrosymmetric structure. In the 7M4MC molecule, the methoxy and methylthio groups act as electron donors (D) and the carbonyl group acts as an electron acceptor (A), forming a d -π-A-π-D structure with an electron gradient. 7M4MC exhibits a high degree of second-harmonic generation intensity (11 × KDP), a broad transmission range (600–1600 nm, >88 %), an elevated optical energy bandgap ( E g = 2.57 eV), high thermal stability ( T m = 105 °C) and excellent dielectric properties ( ε r ≈ 2.1). This work not only provides two new crystals but also offers a viable molecular design option by changing the degree of intramolecular distortion by altering the backbone structure.

Abstract:Novel thiophene and furan‐fused cyclopentadienyl chromophores were comprehensively investigated by multiple methods, including density of states analysis, coupled perturbed Kohn–Sham (CPKS) method, sum‐over‐states (SOS) model, the two‐level model (TSM), hyperpolarizability density analysis, and the (hyper)polarizability contribution decomposition. Development of organic nonlinear optical materials has become progressively more important due to their emerging applications in new‐generation photonic devices. A novel series of chromophores based on innovative thiophene and furan‐fused cyclopentadienyl bridge with various powerful donor and acceptor moieties were designed and theoretically investigated for applications in nonlinear optics. To unravel the structure–property relationship between this new push‐pull conjugated systems and their nonlinear optical property, multiple methods, including density of states analysis, coupled perturbed Kohn–Sham (CPKS) method, sum‐over‐states (SOS) model, the two‐level model (TSM), hyperpolarizability density analysis, and the (hyper)polarizability contribution decomposition, were performed to comprehensively investigated the nonlinear optical and electronic properties of this new π‐system. Due to excellent charge transfer ability of new bridge and distinctive structure of donor and acceptor, the designed chromophores exhibit deep HOMO levels, low excitation energy, high dipole moment difference and large hyperpolarizability, indicating the appealing air‐stable property and remarkable electrooptic performance of them. Importantly, THQ‐CS‐A3 and PA‐CS‐A3 shows outstanding NLO response properties with βtot value of 6953.9 × 10−30 and 5066.0 × 10−30 esu in AN, respectively. The influence of the push‐pull strength, the heterocycle and the π‐conjugation of new bridge on the nonlinear optical properties of this novel powerful systems are clarified. This new series of chromophores exhibit remarkable electro‐optical Pockels and optical rectification effect. More interestingly, PA‐CS‐A3 and THQ‐CS‐A2 also show appealing SHG effect. This study will help people understand the nature of nonlinear optical properties of innovative heteroarene‐fused based cyclopentadienyl chromophores and offer guidance for the rational design of chromophores with outstanding electrooptic (EO) performance in the future.

Abstract:A series of mono-substituted pyrene derivatives having a pyrene mesogenic core and aldehyde group peripherals were designed and synthesized, which had typical D-[Formula: see text]-A structures. Photophysical properties of the compounds were characterized by UV/Vis spectroscopy and the third-order nonlinearities of the compounds were studied by “open aperture” and “closed aperture” [Formula: see text]-scan techniques. Both of the compounds showed typical nonlinear absorptions and refractions, and the third-order nonlinear susceptibilities have been found to be very high in all cases. The significant nonlinear optical response combined with the possibility to further modify it, by changing the electron acceptor and the electron-donor groups, suggests that these systems can prove to be important candidates for a variety of photonic/optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Fluorenone molecular materials provide an excellent platform to engineer new materials that are very promising for photonic and optoelectronic applications, such as very efficient optical second harmonic (SHG) and terahertz (THz) generation, light emitting diodes, biomarkers, solar cells, and sensors. More recently, there have been a lot of research efforts dedicated towards the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of these fluorenone materials because of their unique combination of chemical, structural, and optical properties. This review addresses the state of the art of this very interesting and potent class of molecular materials. In particular, the NLO susceptibilities, their potential for optical SHG and THz generation and their two-photon luminescence properties and how to optimize these by rational design are reviewed. Flexibility and easiness of modification of their molecular properties combined with their structural polymorphism enable a variety of applications. Perspectives and future research directions for these fluorenone materials are also presented.

Abstract:Non‐centrosymmetric arrangement of the chromophores is a prerequisite for non‐vanishing macroscopic second‐order nonlinear optical responses. It is shown that an acentric packing of a highly polarizable merocyanine dye, with optimized orientation for frequency conversions, can be induced by hydrogen‐bond‐directed self‐assembly with appropriate phenolic derivatives. The highly polar co‐crystal is demonstrated to have potential for both second‐ and third‐order nonlinear optics applications owing to its large nonlinear response and favorable crystal properties.

Abstract:The structure of a novel bichromophore that comprised a readily hyperpolarisable chromophore with 3-phenoxypropane-1, 2-diol via esterification, was confirmed by elemental analysis, UV–visible absorption spectra and 1H NMR. Nonlinear optical polymer films were fabricated by doping the bichromophore and the corresponding monochromophore into poly(4-vinylphenol). In situ second harmonic generation measurements revealed that the bichromophore imparted a 2.2-fold enhancement in the second harmonic generation coefficients of the films, indicating that the novel 3-phenoxypropane-1, 2-diol derivative could be used in the design and synthesis of multi-chromophoric dendrimers with large macroscopic optical nonlinearity.

Abstract: There have been significant advances in understanding and optimizing classical π-conjugated donor-acceptor chromophores with large second-order molecular hyper-polarizabilities in the area of organic nonlinear optics in the last few years [1–6]. However, there are only few chromophores with very large molecular hyper-polarizabilities such as donor-acceptor stilbenes and tolanes that form potentially useful crystalline materials. Our interest in molecular crystals stems from the fact that the potential upper limits of macroscopic nonlinearities and long-term orientational stability of molecular crystals are significantly superior to those of polymers [1]. In addition to a large molecular hyperpolarizability, the second-order macroscopic nonlinearities are strongly dependent of the relative arrangement and orientation of the π-conjugation chromophores in the crystalline solid [1, 3]. Unlike the third-order nonlinear optical effects, chromophores are required to arrange noncentrosymmetrically in the crystalline state so as to exhibit non-vanishing macroscopic second-order nonlinear optical responses such as second harmonic generation, frequency mixing, the linear electro-optic effect, and photorefractive effects. To be an efficient as well as useful second-order nonlinear optical crystalline material, the orientation of the chromophores in the bulk also needs to be optimized.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic metal halides (OIMHs) have drawn considerable attention due to their remarkable optoelectronic properties and substantial promise for nonlinear optical applications. In this research, phenazine has been selected as the organic cation because of its π-conjugated feature. Three compounds, (C12H9N2)PbCl3, (C12H9N2)SbCl4, and (C12H9N2)2InBr4·Br, were synthesized. Initial space group assignments were centrosymmetric for (C12H9N2)PbCl3 and (C12H9N2)SbCl4. However, under 1550 nm laser excitation, (C12H9N2)PbCl3 and (C12H9N2)SbCl4 exhibited second harmonic generation intensities ~1.7 times greater than that of the benchmark KH2PO4. Structural reevaluation ultimately confirmed non-centrosymmetric P1 and P21 space groups for (C12H9N2)PbCl3 and (C12H9N2)SbCl4, respectively. Upon excitation at 335 nm and 470 nm, (C12H9N2)PbCl3, (C12H9N2)SbCl4, and (C12H9N2)2InBr4·Br emit fluorescence at room temperature. (C12H9N2)2InBr4·Br exhibits reversible phase transitions, showing potential for phase change energy storage. Our research underscores the critical role of comprehensive experimental validation in determining the precise crystallographic space groups and reveals the extensive potential of OIMHs as versatile candidates for advanced optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Third-order optical nonlinearities of the novel diarylethene–phthalocyanine dyads were measured by femtosecond forward degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) technique at 800nm. They have large and ultrafast third-order optical nonlinear responses, which mainly arise from the distortion of the large π-conjugated electronic charge distribution in the molecules. The second-order hyperpolarizabilities of the diarylethene–phthalocyanine dyads was measured to be (0.76–1.12)×10−30esu.

Abstract:Crystalline solids are often regarded as the best choice of material form for practical use as optical frequency converters because of the excellent long-term orientational stability and extremely high density of active components. Such materials can be combined with inexpensive diode lasers for optic parametric generation of a broad range of optical frequencies [1, 2]. We here report on our on-going efforts in the development of novel and highly efficient second-order nonlinear optical crystalline materials for frequency conversion, based on the hydrazone derivatives 5-(methylthio)-thiophenecarboxaldehyde-4-nitrophenylhydrazone (MTTNPH) and 5-nitro-2-thiophene-carboxaldehyde-4-methylphenylhydrazone (NTMPH).
