Abstract:In order to further exploit the optical nonlinearities in chalcone derivatives, two bis-chalcone molecules (C1 & C2) are synthesized. The third-order optical nonlinearities of both molecules are investigated via Z-scan. Enhanced nonlinear absorption and refraction are measured in C1 due to its superior planar at-conjugation over C2. Furthermore, an ultrafast sign change in both nonlinear absorption and refraction are revealed in C1 under femtoseconds and picoseconds lasers. A sub-picosecond ultrafast transfer is illustrated via femtoseconds transient absorption spectrum and considered as the mechanism behind the sign change. The results of this research may further extend the potential of chalcone derivatives in nonlinear optical applications and provide another method to tune the optical nonlinearity in such materials.

Abstract:Fluorenone molecular materials provide an excellent platform to engineer new materials that are very promising for photonic and optoelectronic applications, such as very efficient optical second harmonic (SHG) and terahertz (THz) generation, light emitting diodes, biomarkers, solar cells, and sensors. More recently, there have been a lot of research efforts dedicated towards the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of these fluorenone materials because of their unique combination of chemical, structural, and optical properties. This review addresses the state of the art of this very interesting and potent class of molecular materials. In particular, the NLO susceptibilities, their potential for optical SHG and THz generation and their two-photon luminescence properties and how to optimize these by rational design are reviewed. Flexibility and easiness of modification of their molecular properties combined with their structural polymorphism enable a variety of applications. Perspectives and future research directions for these fluorenone materials are also presented.

Abstract:A novel symmetrical charge transfer fluorene-based compound 2,7-bis (4-methoxystyryl)-9, 9-bis (2-ethylhexyl)-9H-fluorene (abbreviated as BMOSF) was synthesized and its nonlinear absorption was investigated using two different laser systems: a 140-fs, 800-nm Ti:sapphire laser operating at 1-kHz repetition rate and a 38-ps, 1064-nm Nd:YAG pulsed laser operating at 10-Hz repetition rate, respectively. Unique nonlinear absorption properties in this new compound were observed that rise from multiphoton absorption. The nonlinear absorption coefficients were measured to be 6.02*10^(-3) cm/GW (due to two-photon absorption, exciting wavelength is 800 nm) and 3.6*10^(-20) cm3/W2 (due to three-photon absorption, exciting wavelength is 1064 nm). This new compound possesses strong fluorescence induced by two-photon absorption and obvious three-photon absorption optical limiting effects.

Abstract:A new organic material 4-hydroxy-ethyl-phenyl-porphyrin-3-propionate was investigated due to its favorable nonlinear absorptive and refractive properties using a modified time-resolved pump-probe system with phase object at 532 nm under picosecond pulse excitation. A five-level model was used to explain the optical nonlinearity of the sample. With the corresponding fitting program, the nonlinear coefficients of the sample were obtained.

Abstract:The ultrafast optical nonlinearity of a pyrene-based ferrocene derivative (Py-Fc) is systematically studied via Z-scan, transient absorption spectrum (TAS), and phase object pump probe (POPP). An ultrafast broadband absorption in visible wavelength region is observed via TAS. Based on this finding, nonlinear optical absorption of the material is investigated at various wavelengths. Results indicate that different absorption mechanisms, including reverse saturable absorption and two-photon induced excited state absorption involve in the nonlinear absorption in visible spectrum. The cooperation between the two mechanisms brings strong optical limiting properties. In addition, negative nonlinear optical refraction from the excited state is observed in POPP experiment and its dynamics is discussed. These results demonstrate that the molecular Py-Fc exhibits strong optical limiting, suggesting it is a potential material for ultrafast laser protection.

Abstract:Two-photon absorption induced excited state absorption in the solution of a new fluorenyl-based chromophore is investigated by a time-resolved pump-probe technique using femtosecond pulses. With the help of an additional femtosecond open-aperture Z-scan technique, numerical simulations based on a three-energy level model are used to interpret the experimental results, and we determine the nonlinear optical parameters of this new chromophore uniquely. Large two-photon absorption cross section and excited state absorption cross section for singlet excited state are obtained, indicating a good candidate for optical limiting devices. Moreover, the influence of two-beam coupling induced energy transfer in neat N,N'-dimethylformamide solvent is also considered, although this effect is strongly restrained by the instantaneous two-photon absorption.

Abstract:The ultrafast nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of novel planar pi-conjugated chalcone derivatives, (E)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)-1-(3-bromo-4-fluorophenyl) prop-2-en-1-one (1503) and (E)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)-1-(phenothiazin-2-yl) prop-2-en-1-one (1526) are investigated and compared. The effect of intramolecular charge transfer on NLO absorption and refraction is discussed without changing the planar structural properties of the chalcone molecules. Transient absorption experiments are used to observe the evolution of 1526 from local excited (LE) state to the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) state. In the Z-scan experiments, 1526 exhibits respectively different nonlinear absorption (NLA) mechanisms (reverse saturable absorption and two-photon induced excited state absorption) at 532 nm (4 ns, 22ps, 190 fs) and 700-900 nm, 190 fs. The NLA and nonlinear refraction (NLR) phenomena of 1526 are observed and discussed in the POPP experiments. The experimental results indicate that the chalcone derivative can become the potential materials for laser protection.

Abstract:Broadband reverse saturable absorption is systematically investigated via Z-scan, transient absorption spectrum (TAS). The excited state absorption and negative refraction of Orange IV are observed in the Z-scan experiment at 532 nm. Meanwhile, two-photon-induced excited state absorption and pure two-photon absorption are observed at 600 nm and 700 nm with the pulse width of 190 fs, respectively. An ultrafast broadband absorption in the visible wavelength region is observed via TAS. The different nonlinear absorption mechanisms at multiple wavelengths are discussed and interpreted from the results of TAS. In addition, the ultrafast dynamics of negative refraction in the excited state of Orange IV are investigated via a degenerate phase object pump-probe, from which the weak long-lived excited state is extracted. All studies indicate that Orange IV has the potential to be further optimized into a superior broadband reverse saturable absorption material and also has certain reference significance for the study of optical nonlinearity in organic molecules containing azobenzene groups.

Abstract:A new fluorinated azobenzene chromophore and its non-fluorinated analogue have been synthesized and characterized by UV–vis spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The hyperpolarizabilities were characterized through solvatochromic method and the dispersions of hyperpolarizabilities were studied in terms of the quantum-mechanical two-level model. In contrast with its non-fluorinated analogue, the new fluorinated chromophore exhibits a considerable hypsochromic shift of the absorption maximum and cut-off absorption wavelength, which could lead to a better transparency in operating wavelength of electronic devices. The results also show that the fluorinated chromophore possesses higher thermal stability and the same order of the hyperpolarizability comparing with its non-fluorinated analogue.

Abstract:The temporal properties of nonlinear absorption of a stilbenzene derivative have been investigated by time-resolved pump-probe techniques with picosecond laser pulses at the wavelength of 532 nm. With the help of an additional nanosecond and picosecond open-aperture Z-scan technique, numerical simulations based on a new five-energy level model are used to interpret the experimental results, and the nonlinear optical parameters of this new compound are determined. The five-energy level model is described by two-photon absorption (TPA) excited from ground-state-induced excited-state absorption (ESA) including singlet ESA and triplet ESA. Under the nanosecond pulse excitation, a TPA excited from the triplet excited state contributes to the nonlinear absorption, and the value of the TPA is found to be 1 order of magnitude larger than those usually found for TPA excited from the ground state.

Abstract:Two novel hydrazone derivatives (BTH-1 and BTH-2) were designed and synthesized to investigate the modulation of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and planar pi conjugation on optical nonlinearities. Femtosecond Z scan measurements show that trithiophene-substituted BTH-2 exhibits stronger broadband (600-900 nm) reverse saturable absorption (RSA) resulting from two-photon absorption (TPA)-induced excited state absorption (ESA). Combined with quantum chemical calculations, the results indicate that the local excitation and spatial delocalization enhanced by planarized trithiophene are more conducive to promoting the nonlinear optical (NLO) response of hydrazone molecules than the ICT introduced by twisted triphenylamine. In addition, the intensity dependent transition from saturable absorption to RSA of BTH-2 at 532 nm under multiple pulse widths (fs, ps, ns) was explored. Transient absorption spectroscopy provided information on the excited state dynamics of the compounds. This work extends NLO research on hydrazone derivatives and provides a reference for the design of hydrazone molecules with high nonlinearity. The results also suggest that BTH-2 is a promising candidate for optical limiting applications.

Abstract:Novel NLO chromophore with 3, 5-bis(trifluoromethyl) benzoyl as the isolated group in electron bridge was prepared for investigating the NLO character. Chromophore FTC-wl was characterized using UV–Visible spectra, nuclear magnetic resonance, and mass spectrometry and showed us excellent thermal stability. EO films prepared by poly(bisphenol A carbonate) polymer doped with this chromophore at different content had been poled to afford the highest electro optic coefficients (r33) of 28pm/V.

Abstract:The controllable preparation of nonlinear optical polymers is still one of the research hotspots on nonlinear optical field. In this paper, a triazole functional polymer was designed and achieved by high-efficiency click chemistry method. The structure and properties of the polymer was characterized and evaluated with FTIR, NMR, UV, FL, DLLS and nonlinear optical analyses. The results exhibited that the polymer was successfully synthesized and has favorable nonlinear optical property, its third-order nonlinearity up to 3.66×10-10 esu.

Abstract:Fluorine was non-conjugatedly linked to the donor of nonlinear optical chromophore to investigate the effect of highly electronegative fluorine on intramolecular charge-transfer and electro-optic activities. 1HNMR spectra and UV–vis absorption were used to investigate that introduction of fluorine change the dielectric environment of intramolecular charge-transfer. Fluorinated chromophore showed more intensified absorption and its absorption properties was more stable to dielectric change in solution. In solid state of guest-host electro-optic polymer films, this dielectric environment stabilization was revealed to attenuate the dipole–dipole interactions of chromophores. Higher electro-optic coefficients (148pm/V) and higher chromophore loading density (30wt%) of fluorinated material chr-2/APC than benchmark material chr-1/APC (116pm/V at 25wt%) was achieved.

Abstract:In this work, three Schiff base derivatives with large conjugated system have been elaborately designed and synthesized, in which bithienyl (1), pyrenyl (2) and anthryl (3) connect an azo moiety (N = N) monomer through conjugation linkage (C = N), respectively. Their third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties are systematically investigated by performing the picosecond-pulsed Z-scan measurements at the wavelength of 532 nm and femtosecond-pulsed Z-scan measurements at the wavelength of 600 nm. The pump-probe measurements and the linear dependence between the amplitude of transmittance change and different laser energy indicate that the nonlinearity is originated from pure two-photon absorption (2PA) behavior. Among them, compound 1 with the bithiophene group has a larger two-photon absorption cross section up to 8.90 x 10(4) GM (ps). The reason may be that the electron-rich bithiophene group with lower delocalization energy improves electron transition. In addition, excellent optical limiting (OL) behaviors of the three Schiff base derivatives are observed under ps laser excitations at 532 nm wavelength, which resulted from 2PA induced reverse saturation absorption (RSA). All the experimental results manifest that these compounds could be used as potential NLO materials.

Abstract:Excited state nonlinear refraction of the C-60/toluene solution is studied using a picosecond time-resolved pump-probe system based on a 4f nonlinear imaging technique with the phase object. Negative nonlinear refraction of the C-60/toluene solution is observed after zero-delay time besides normal nonlinear absorption. By using a five-energy-band model, both the change of refraction index per unit density of the first singlet excited state and the first triplet excited state of the C-60 molecule having a negative sign are determined. The nonlinear refraction, as well as the dynamics of neat toluene and its excited state contribution to the solution, is also investigated.

Abstract:The nonlinear refraction dynamics of a novel cyanine dye/DMF solution was investigated using time-resolved nondegenerate pump-probe system with phase object at pico-second timescale. The 532 nm laser pulse with 21-ps duration was used as the excitation and the laser pulse of 600 nm with 10-ps duration was used for probing. The experimental results show that the nonlinear optical response of cyanine solution originates from solute molecule's excited-state nonlinear mechanism. The experiment curve is interpreted by numerical simulations based on a five-energy-level model and all of nonlinear optical parameters of cyanine dye at 600 nm are determined. This cyanine dye exhibits large change of refraction index per unit density for excited-state as well as short lifetime, indicating this compound can be a good candidate for future photonic applications.
