Abstract:2D black phosphorus (BP) and rhenium dichalcogenides (ReX2, X = S, Se) possess intrinsic in-plane anisotropic physical properties arising from their low crystal lattice symmetry, which has inspired their novel applications in electronics, photonics, and optoelectronics. Different from BP with poor environmental stability, ReX2 has low-symmetry distorted 1T structures with excellent stability. In ReX2, the electronic structure is weakly dependent on layer numbers, which restricts their property tunability and device applications. Here, the properties are tuned, such as optical bandgap, Raman anisotropy, and electrical transport, by alloying 2D ReS2 and ReSe2. Photoluminescence emission energy of ReS2(1-x)Se2x monolayers (x from 0 to 1 with a step of 0.1) can be continuously tuned ranging from 1.62 to 1.31 eV. Polarization behavior of Raman modes, such as ReS2-like peak at 212 cm(-1), shifts as the composition changes. Anisotropic electrical property is maintained in ReS2(1-x)Se2x with high electron mobility along b-axis for all compositions of ReS2(1-x)Se2x.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials are an excellent platform for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). For ReS2, the Raman enhancement effect can be highly improved through the dipole−dipole interactions and synergistic resonance effects in the phase-engineering ReS2 films. However, the performance of the substrate can be improved further through regulating the electronic interaction between the ReS2 and probe molecules. Herein, a dynamic coulomb repulsion strategy is proposed to trigger an electronic state redistribution by asymmetric electrostatic interactions. With the phase-engineering ReS2/graphene heterostructure as a prototype, under laser excitation, the generated hot electrons in graphene and ReS2 can repel each other due to Coulomb interaction, which breaks the symmetrical distribution of hot electrons in ReS2, and increases the electronic concentration on the interface between ReS2 and the probe molecule. With R6G as the probe molecule, the asymmetric electron distribution and synergistic resonance effects on their interface improve the limit of detection to 10-12 M. Meanwhile, the heterostructure also show good uniformity, stability as well as unique anisotropy. This strategy can be generalized to other 2D heterostructures to obtain the ultrasensitive SERS substrates.

Abstract:Anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) materials exhibit lattice-orientation dependent optical and electrical properties. Carriers doping of such materials has been used to modulate their energy band structures for opto-electronic applications. Herein, we show that by stacking monolayer rhenium disulfide (ReS2) on a flat gold film, the electrons doping in ReS2 can affect the in-plane anisotropic Raman enhancement of molecules adsorbed on ReS2. The change of enhancement factor and the degree of anisotropy in enhancement with layer number are sensitively dependent on the doping level of ReS2 by gold, which is further confirmed by Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) measurements. These findings could open an avenue for probing anisotropic electronic interactions between molecules and 2D materials with low symmetry using Raman enhancement effect.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) on two-dimensional (2D) layered materials has provided a unique platform to study the chemical mechanism (CM) of the enhancement due to its natural separation from electromagnetic enhancement. The CM stems from the charge interactions between the substrate and molecules. Despite the extensive studies of the energy alignment between 2D materials and molecules, an understanding of how the electronic properties of the substrate are explicitly involved in the charge interaction is still unclear. Lately, a new group of 2D layered materials with anisotropic structures, including orthorhombic black phosphorus (BP) and triclinic rhenium disulfide (ReS2), has attracted great interest due to their unique anisotropic electrical and optical properties. Herein, we report a unique anisotropic Raman enhancement on few-layered BP and ReS2 using copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) molecules as a Raman probe, which is absent on isotropic graphene and h-BN. According to detailed Raman tensor analysis and density functional theory calculations, anisotropic charge interactions between the 2D materials and molecules are responsible for the angular dependence of the Raman enhancement. Our findings not only provide new insights into the CM process in SERS, but also open up new avenues for the exploration and application of the electronic properties of anisotropic 2D layered materials.

Abstract:Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a precise and non-invasive analytical technique that is widely used in chemical analysis, environmental protection, food processing, pharmaceutics, and diagnostic biology. However, it is still a challenge to produce highly sensitive and reusable SERS substrates with minimum fluorescence background. In this work, we propose the use of van der Waals heterostructures of two-dimensional materials (2D materials) to cover plasmonic metal nanoparticles to solve this challenge. The heterostructures of atomically thin boron nitride (BN) and graphene provide synergistic effects: (1) electrons could tunnel through the atomically thin BN, allowing the charge transfer between graphene and probe molecules to suppress fluorescence background; (2) the SERS sensitivity is enhanced by graphene via chemical enhancement mechanism (CM) in addition to electromagnetic field mechanism (EM); (3) the atomically thin BN protects the underlying graphene and Ag nanoparticles from oxidation during heating for regeneration at 360 °C in the air so that the SERS substrates could be reused. These advances will facilitate wider applications of SERS, especially on the detection of fluorescent molecules with higher sensitivity.

Abstract:Rhenium diselenide (ReSe2), which bears in-plane anisotropic optical and electrical properties, is of considerable interest for its excellent applications in novel devices, such as polarization-sensitive photodetectors and integrated polarization-controllers. However, great challenges to date in the controllable synthesis of high-quality ReSe2 have hindered its in-depth investigations and practical applications. Herein, we report a feasible synthesis of monolayer single-crystal ReSe2 flakes on the Au foil substrate by using a chemical vapor deposition route. Particularly, we focus on the temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy investigations of monolayer ReSe2 grown on Au foils, which present concurrent red shifts of Eg-like and Ag-like modes with increasing measurement temperature from 77-290 K. Linear temperature dependences of both modes are revealed and explained from the anharmonic vibration of the ReSe2 lattice. More importantly, the strong interaction of ReSe2 with Au, with respect to that with SiO2/Si, is further confirmed by temperature-dependent Raman characterization. This work is thus proposed to shed light on the optical and thermal properties of such anisotropic two-dimensional three-atom-thick materials.

Abstract:As an anisotropic 2D layered material, rhenium disulfide (ReS2) has attracted much attention because of its unusual properties and promising applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, the low lattice symmetry and interlayer decoupling of ReS2 make asymmetric growth and out-of-plane growth occur quite easily; therefore, thick flake, dendritic and flower-like structures of ReS2 have mostly been obtained previously. Here, we report on an approach based on space-confined epitaxial growth for the controlled synthesis of ReS2 films. Using this approach, large-area and high-quality ReS2 films with uniform monolayer thickness can grow on a mica substrate. Furthermore, the weak van der Waals interaction between the surface of mica and ReS2 clusters, which favors surface-confined growth while avoiding out-of-plane growth, is critical for growing ReS2 with uniform monolayer thickness. The morphological evolution of ReS2 with the growth temperature reveals that asymmetric growth can be suppressed at relatively low temperatures. A ReS2 field-effect transistor displayed a current on/off ratio of 1(0)6 and an electron mobility of up to 40 cm(2) V-1 s(-1), with outstanding photoresponsivity of 12 A W-1. This work not only promotes the large-scale employment of ReS2 in high-performance optoelectronic devices, but also provides a means of controlling the unusual growth behavior of low-lattice-symmetry 2D layered materials.

Abstract:With continuous research into two‐dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), a great number of high‐performance devices are emerging due to the unique structures and versatile properties of TMDs. As a representative of the group‐VII TMDs, rhenium disulfide (ReS 2 ) has attracted increasing attention because the distorted octahedral crystal structure makes it distinctive from more widely known TMDs members, such as MoS 2 and WSe 2 . It features layer‐independent electrical and anisotropic optical properties which are suitable for the applications of field effect transistors (FETs) and photodetectors. This review focuses on the recent research work about the electronic and optoelectronic applications based on novel 2D ReS 2 . In the first part, the unique crystal structures and properties are introduced. This is followed by the various preparation methods. Next, high‐performance FETs and photodetectors based on ReS 2 are presented. Finally, conclusions are drawn and prospects proposed.
Interlayer Interactions in Anisotropic Atomically Thin Rhenium Diselenide

Abstract:In this work, we study the interlayer phonon vibration modes, the layer-numberdependent optical bandgap, and the anisotropic photoluminescence (PL) spectra of atomically thin rhenium diselenide (ReSe2) for the first time. The ultralow frequency interlayer Raman spectra and the polarization-resolved high frequency Raman spectra in ReSe2 allow the identification of its layer number and crystal orientation. Furthermore, PL measurements show the anisotropic optical emission intensity of the material with its bandgap increasing from 1.26 eV in the bulk to 1.32 eV in the monolayer. The study of the layer-number dependence of the Raman modes and the PL spectra reveals relatively weak van der Waal’s interaction and two-dimensional (2D) quantum confinement in the atomically thin ReSe2. The experimental observation of the intriguing anisotropic interlayer interaction and tunable optical transition in monolayer and multilayer ReSe2 establishes the foundation for further exploration of this material in the development of anisotropic optoelectronic devices functioning in the near-infrared spectrum, which is important for many applications in optical communication and infrared sensing.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has become an ultrasensitive technique in trace molecule detection through its unique vibrational fingerprint. However, development of a SERS platform with large enhancement factor, superior stability, and excellent reproducibility is still a grand challenge for practical applications. Recently, two-dimensional (2D) materials play an intriguing role for SERS through the use of their unique structures and properties. This review summarizes the recent progress of 2D materials-based SERS that could be complements to plasmonic SERS substrates. Based on the symmetry of the lattice structure, isotropic and anisotropic 2D materials for SERS are introduced. Particularly, various methods to improve the SERS performance are described. The sensitivity, limit of detection, and stability are discussed for 2D materials-based heterostructures as SERS platforms, including van der Waals and hybrid heterostructures. Furthermore, the applications of 2D materials-based SERS substrates in niche areas, including local strain probing, remote/in-situ chemical analysis, and fine structure characterization are summarized.

Highly Efficient and Ultrastable Visible-Light Photocatalytic Water Splitting over ReS2.

Abstract:Two dimensional materials have many outstanding intrinsic advantages that can be utilized to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency of water splitting. Herein, based on ab initio calculations, we reveal that for monolayer and multilayer rhenium disulphide (ReS2), the band gap and band edge positions are an excellent match with the water splitting energy levels. Moreover, the effective masses of the carriers are relatively light, and the optical absorption coefficients are high under visible illumination. Due to the feature of weak interlayer coupling, these properties are independent of the layer thickness. Our results suggest that ReS2 is a stable and efficient photocatalyst with potential applications in the use of solar energy for water splitting.

Abstract:Dynamic response in ReS2 nanomechanical resonators is leveraged to unambiguously resolve the mechanical anisotropy in 2D ReS2 crystal. Using resonant nanomechanical spectromicroscopy, the in‐plane Young's moduli of 2D ReS2 are found to be 127 and 201 GPa along the two orthogonal mechanical axes, with the mechanical soft axis aligns with the Re‐Re chain in the ReS2 crystal. As an emerging two‐dimensional semiconductor, rhenium disulfide (ReS2) is renowned for its strong in‐plane anisotropy in electrical, optical, and thermal properties. In contrast to the electrical, optical, optoelectrical, and thermal anisotropies that are extensively studied in ReS2, experimental characterization of mechanical properties has largely remained elusive. Here, it is demonstrated that the dynamic response in ReS2 nanomechanical resonators can be leveraged to unambiguously resolve such disputes. Using anisotropic modal analysis, the parameter space for ReS2 resonators in which mechanical anisotropy is best manifested in resonant responses is determined. By measuring their dynamic response in both spectral and spatial domains using resonant nanomechanical spectromicroscopy, it is clearly shown that ReS2 crystal is mechanically anisotropic. Through fitting numerical models to experimental results, it is quantitatively determined that the in‐plane Young's moduli are 127 and 201 GPa along the two orthogonal mechanical axes. In combination with polarized reflectance measurements, it is shown that the mechanical soft axis aligns with the Re‐Re chain in the ReS2 crystal. These results demonstrate that dynamic responses in nanomechanical devices can offer important insights into intrinsic properties in 2D crystals and provide design guidelines for future nanodevices with anisotropic resonant responses.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have attracted growing interest regarding their potential applications in next-generation electronic and optoelectronic devices. Owing to their atomic thickness and tunable bandgap, they exhibit unique mechanical, electrical, and optical properties. As a specific member of the TMDC family, rhenium disulfide (ReS2) has stimulated intensive interest due to its anisotropic crystal structure, weak inter-layer coupling, and anisotropic electrical and optical properties. In this review, we summarize the distinct crystal structure and intrinsic anisotropic properties of ReS2, followed by an introduction to its synthesis methods. The current applications of ReS2 and its heterojunctions are presented based on its anisotropic properties. This review not only provides a timely summary of the current applications of ReS2 and its heterojunctions, but also inspires new approaches to develop other innovative devices based on 2D materials with a low lattice symmetry.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Abstract Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) based on two-dimensional (2D) materials has attracted great attention over the past decade. Compared with metallic materials, which enhance Raman signals via the surface plasmon effect, 2D materials integrated on silicon substrates are ideal for use in the fabrication of plasmon-free SERS chips, with the advantages of outstanding fluorescence quenching capability, excellent biomolecular compatibility, tunable Fermi levels, and potentially low-cost material preparation. Moreover, recent studies have shown that the limits of detection of 2D-material-based SERS may be comparable with those of metallic substrates, which has aroused significant research interest. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the advances in SERS chips based on 2D materials. As several excellent reviews of graphene-enhanced Raman spectroscopy have been published in the past decade, here, we focus only on 2D materials beyond graphene, i.e., transition metal dichalcogenides, black phosphorus, hexagonal boron nitride, 2D titanium carbide or nitride, and their heterostructures. We hope that this paper can serve as a useful reference for researchers specializing in 2D materials, spectroscopy, and diverse applications related to chemical and biological sensing.

In this work, 2D single-crystalline ReS 2 flakes with different layer numbers were synthesized on mica substrates using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) by adjusting the distance between the mica substrate and Re source, and the growth mechanism was further discussed. The fluorescence quenching effect and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect of 2D ReS 2 flakes were investigated using rhodamine B (RhB), crystal violet (CV) and malachite green (MG) dye molecules as Raman probes. The results show that the fluorescence quenching effect and SERS effect of 2D ReS 2 flakes are enhanced with decreasing layer number. The lowest detection limits on monolayer ReS 2 flake substrates are 10 −10 M, 10 −9 M and 10 −8 M for RhB, CV and MG under 532 nm laser excitation, respectively. 2D ReS 2 flakes used as a sensitive SERS-active substrate have excellent uniformity and stability. The surface Raman enhancement mechanism of 2D ReS 2 flakes was discussed.

Abstract:Crystal-orientation-dependent properties in low symmetric two-dimensional material ReS2 have inspired its novel applications in photonics, electronics, and optoelectronics. In this work, Ar+ ion bombardment is used to treat ReS2 with different thicknesses, and different amounts of defect densities are introduced in ReS2 flakes. Angular dependent polarized Raman spectra is used to probe the change in anisotropy. The intensities of mode V exhibit maximum and minimum intensities with incident polarization along the b-axis and perpendicular. The intensity ratio Imin/Imax is used as a quantity to detect the change in anisotropy. It is found that with the same defect density, the change in anisotropy in 1-layer (L) ReS2 is the highest among ReS2 flakes; thus, 1L ReS2 is susceptible to ion bombardment. With an increase in the defect density in 1L ReS2, an increase in the Imin/Imax value is observed. A phenomenological model is established to understand the quantitative relationship between defect density and anisotropy, and the isotropic scattering range associated with defects is obtained. The results here provide ways of quantitatively understanding anisotropy by angular polarized Raman spectroscopy as well as ways of tuning anisotropy in two-dimensional anisotropic materials by ion bombardments.
