Abstract:Polymeric semiconductors are emerging as a kind of competitive photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution due to their well‐tunable structures, versatile functionalization, and low‐cost processibility. In this work, a series of conjugated porous polymers with substantial cyano‐substituted fully sp2‐carbon frameworks are efficiently synthesized by using electron‐deficient tricyanomesitylene as a key building block to promote an organic base‐catalyzed Knoevenagel condensation with various aldehyde‐substituted arenes. The resulting porous polymers feature donor‐acceptor structures with π‐extended conjugation, rendering them with distinct semiconducting properties. They possess hierarchically porous structures, nanoscale morphologies, and intriguing wettability. These promising physical characters, finely tailorable by varying the arene units, are essentially relevant to the abundant cynao substituents over the whole frameworks. The as‐prepared porous polymers exhibit excellent visible‐light‐driven photocatalytic activity for water‐splitting hydrogen evolution with apparent quantum yield up to 2.0% at 420 nm or 1.9% at 470 nm, among the highest values yet reported for porous polymer‐based photocatalysts, also representing the first example of such kinds of catalysts formed through a metal‐free‐catalyzed carbon–carbon coupling reaction.

Abstract:Visible light driven photocatalysts based on crystalline microporous metal halogenides received much less attention compared with dense or composite oxide semiconductors. Using the well-known photosensitive transition metal-complexes [TM(2,2-bipy)3 ]2+ (TM=Fe, Co, Ni, Ru) as templates, a special three-dimensional (3D) metal halogenide framework of [TM(2,2-bipy)3 ]Cu4 Br6 was designed with [Cu4 Br4 ] cluster as 4-connected node. These microporous materials feature narrow band gaps and stable visible light driven photocatalytic properties including water reduction to provide H2 and photodegradation of organic pollutants. The study of electronic band structure shows that the TM complexes effectively prevent the recombination of photo-induced electron/hole pairs leading to excellent photocatalytic activity and photochemical stability. This work represents the first 3D microporous metal halogenides used as visible light driven photocatalyst to provide hydrogen energy.

Abstract:2D porous polymers with a planar architecture and high specific surface area have significant applications potential, such as for photocatalysis, electrochemical catalysis, gas storage and separation, and sensing. Such 2D porous polymers have generally been classified as 2D metal-organic frameworks, 2D covalent organic frameworks, graphitic carbon nitride, graphdiyne, and sandwich-like porous polymer nanosheets. Among these, 2D porous polymers with sp(2)-hybridized carbon (Csp2) bonding are an emerging field of interest. Compared with 2D porous polymers linked by B-O, C(sic)N, or C(sic)C bonds, Csp2-linked 2D porous polymers exhibit extended electron delocalization resulting in unique optical/electrical properties, as well as high chemical/photostability and tunable electrochemical performance. Furthermore, such 2D porous polymers are one of the best precursors for the fabrication of 2D porous carbon materials and carbon skeletons with atomically dispersed transition-metal active sites. Herein, rational synthetic approaches for 2D porous polymers with Csp2 bonding are summarized. Their current practical photoelectric applications, including for gas separation, luminescent sensing and imaging, electrodes for batteries and supercapacitors, and photocatalysis are also discussed.

Abstract:Complex multiple-component semiconductor photocatalysts can be constructed that display enhanced catalytic efficiency via multiple charge and energy transfer, mimicking photosystems in nature. In contrast, the efficiency of single-component semiconductor photocatalysts is usually limited due to the fast recombination of the photogenerated excitons. Here, we report the design of an asymmetric covalent triazine framework as an efficient organic single-component semiconductor photocatalyst. Four different molecular donor-acceptor domains are obtained within the network, leading to enhanced photogenerated charge separation via an intramolecular energy transfer cascade. The photocatalytic efficiency of the asymmetric covalent triazine framework is superior to that of its symmetric counterparts; this was demonstrated by the visible-light-driven formation of benzophosphole oxides from diphenylphosphine oxide and diphenylacetylene.

Abstract:Construction of organic semiconducting materials with in-plane π-conjugated structures and robustness through carbon-carbon bond linkages, alternatively as organic graphene analogs, is extremely desired for powerfully optoelectrical conversion. However, the poor reversibility for sp 2 carbon bond forming reactions makes them unavailable for building high crystalline well-defined organic structures through a self-healing process, such as covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Here we report a scalable solution-processing approach to synthesize a family of two-dimensional (2D) COFs with trans -disubstituted C = C linkages via condensation reaction at arylmethyl carbon atoms on the basis of 3,5-dicyano-2,4,6-trimethylpyridine and linear/trigonal aldehyde (i.e., 4,4″-diformyl- p -terphenyl, 4,4′-diformyl-1,1′-biphenyl, or 1,3,5-tris(4-formylphenyl)benzene) monomers. Such sp 2 carbon-jointed-pyridinyl frameworks, featuring crystalline honeycomb-like structures with high surface areas, enable driving two half-reactions of water splitting separately under visible light irradiation, comparable to graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) derivatives.

Abstract:Simultaneously manipulating the nanostructure and band structure of semiconductors for boosting the photocatalytic performance of photocatalyts is highly desirable. Herein, a series of hierarchical sponge-like S-doped poly(heptazine imide) (HS-SPHI) assembled by ultrathin nanosheets were successfully fabricated via a facile bottom-up supramolecular preassembly approach using melamine (MA) and trithiocyanuric acid (TTCA) as precursors. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the S-doping and their unique hierarchical porous structure coupled with quantum confinement effect, the as-obtained HS-SPHIs are endowed with extended visible-light response, improved charge separation efficiency, enlarged specific surface area, and enhanced thermodynamic driving force for water reduction. As a result, all the HS-SPHIs exhibit remarkable boosting visible-light (>420 nm) photocatalytic H 2 evolution (PHE). The maximum PHE rate achieved by HS-SPHI-650 can be up to 3584.2 μmol g −1 h -1 , with an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 14.67 % at 420 nm, which is about 22.4 times than that of pristine bulk g-C 3 N 4 (B-GCN). We believe that this work will provide a significant strategy for optimizing the band structure of PCN in order to improve its photocatalytic performance.

Construction of Thiadiazole-Bridged sp2-Carbon-Conjugated Covalent Organic Frameworks with Diminished Excitation Binding Energy Toward Superior Photocatalysis

Abstract:Sp2-carbon-conjugated covalent organic frameworks (sp2c-COFs) have emerged as promising platforms for phototo-chemical energy conversion due to their tailorable optoelectronic properties, in-plane π-conjugations, and robust structures. However, the development of sp2c-COFs in photocatalysis is still highly hindered by their limited linkage chemistry. Herein, we report a novel thiadiazole-bridged sp2c-COF (sp2c-COF-ST) synthesized by thiadiazole-mediated aldol-type polycondensation. The resultant sp2c-COF-ST demonstrates high chemical stability under strong acids and bases (12 M HCl or 12 M NaOH). The electro-deficient thiadiazole together with fully conjugated and planar skeleton endows sp2c-COF-ST with superior photoelectrochemical performance and charge-carrier separation and migration ability. As a result, when employed as a photocathode, sp2c-COF-ST exhibits a significant photocurrent up to ∼14.5 μA cm-2 at 0.3 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) under visible-light irradiation (>420 nm), which is much higher than those analogous COFs with partial imine linkages (mix-COF-SNT ∼ 9.5 μA cm-2) and full imine linkages (imi-COF-SNNT ∼ 4.9 μA cm-2), emphasizing the importance of the structure-property relationships. Further temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectra and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the sp2c-COF-ST has smaller exciton binding energy as well as effective mass in comparison to mix-COF-SNT and imi-COF-SNNT, which suggests that the sp2c-conjugated skeleton enhances the exciton dissociation and carrier migration under light irradiation. This work highlights the design and preparation of thiadiazole-bridged sp2c-COFs with promising photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:Porous carbons, possessing exceptional stability, high surface area, and electric conductivity, are broadly used as superior adsorbent, supporter, or electrode material for environmental protection, industrial catalysis, and energy storage and conversion. The construction of such kinds of materials with designable structures and properties will extremely extend their potential applications, but remains a huge synthetic challenge. Herein, a bottom-up approach is presented to synthesize one type of fully sp(2 )carbon-bonded frameworks by transition metal-catalyzed cross-coupling of different polyphenylenes with electron-withdrawing 9,9'-bifluorenylidene (9,9'-BF) through its 2,7-position. The resulting porous polymeric carbons exhibit substantial semiconducting properties, such as strong light-harvesting capabilities in the visible light region, likely due to their pi-extended backbones with donor-acceptor characters. Their electronic and porous structures can be finely tuned via the polyphenylene spacers. The intriguing properties allow these porous carbons to efficiently catalyze dye degradation under visible light or even natural sunlight with high reusability. Meanwhile, associated with their intrinsic structures, these porous carbons also exhibit highly selective degradation activities toward different dyes. In particular, the photodegradation mechanism involving oxygen and electron is elucidated for the first time for such kinds of materials, related to the presence of specific 9,9'-BF units in their pi-conjugated skeletons.

Abstract:Owning triply periodic minimal surfaces and three-dimensional (3D) interconnected pores, bicontinuous porous materials have drawn enormous attention due to their great academic interest and potential applications in many fields including energy and catalysis. However, their synthesis has remained a great challenge. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of a bicontinuous porous organic semiconductor photocatalyst, which involves the preparation of SiO2 with a shifted double diamond (DD) structure through solvent evaporation-induced self-assembly of a polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymer and tetraethyl orthosilicate, followed by SiO2-templated self-condensation of melamine monomers in a vacuum. Strikingly, the resultant DD-structured graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) possesses two sets of 3D continuous mesopores with a mean diameter of 14 nm, which afford a high specific surface area of 131 m2 g-1 and an optical band gap of 2.8 eV. Being a visible-light-driven photocatalyst, the bicontinuous mesoporous g-CN exhibits high catalytic activity for water splitting to generate H2 (6831 μmol g-1 h-1) with excellent cycling stability. This study provides a protocol for the construction of ordered mesoporous materials containing 3D continuous channels, which holds promise for catalysis applications.
Semiconducting 2D Triazine-Cored Covalent Organic Frameworks with Unsubstituted Olefin Linkages

Abstract:Establishing an sp2-carbon-bonding pattern is one of the efficient accesses to various organic semiconducting materials. However, the less-reversible carbon-carbon bond formation makes it still challenging to spatially construct a well-defined organic framework with π-extended two-dimensional (2D) structure through solution process. Here, a Knoevenagel condensation approach to synthesize two new 2D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) connected by unsubstituted carbon-carbon double bond linkages through activating the methyl carbons of a 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3,5-triazine monomer is presented. The resulting sp2-carbon-linked triazine-cored 2D sheets are vertically stacked into high-crystalline honeycomb-like structures, endowing this kind of COF with extended π-delocalization, tunable energy levels, as well as high surface areas, regular open channels, and chemical stabilities. On the other hand, their microfibrillar morphologies allow for the facile manipulation of thin films as photoelectrodes without additive. Accordingly, such kinds of COF-based photoelectrodes exhibit photocurrents up to ∼45 μA cm-2 at 0.2 V vs RHE as well as rapid charge transfer rates, in comparison with imine-linked COF-based photoelectrodes. In addition, both COFs are applicable for conducting photocatalytic hydrogen generation from water splitting by visible-light irradiation.

Abstract:Semiconducting polymers with ordered structures and self‐segregated nanophases are highly desirable in the development of high‐performance photovoltaic devices. Based on the reticular chemistry, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as an attractive material platform with crystalline structure and intrinsic porosity, which can be obtained through the combination of the predesigned topological diagrams and bottom‐up synthetic strategy. Significantly, various functional building blocks can be assembled into the skeletons of COFs at atomic precision, thus accurately regulating and controlling their semiconducting properties. Herein, an overview on recent advances of semiconducting COFs, sketching the programs from structural design to synthetic approach and functional exploration is given.
Covalent Triazine-Based Frameworks with Cobalt-Loading for Visible Light-Driven Photocatalytic Water Oxidation

Abstract:Conjugated polymers have received significant attention as photocatalysts. However, photocatalytic oxygen evolution has only been reported for a few polymers so far. Here, we present a bipyridine-based covalent triazine-based framework containing metal coordination sites (Bpy-CTF). The material is highly active for sacrificial photocatalytic oxygen evolution with a rate of 322 μmol g-1 h-1 under visible light illumination (≥ 420 nm) after post-synthetic cobalt coordination. An analogs photocatalyst containing biphenylene was found to be less active. Transient absorption spectroscopy studies showed that the cobalt coordinated in the bipyridine units of Bpy-CTF promotes charge separation and transfer, thus contributing to the improved photocatalytic water oxidation activity of Bpy-CTF. The study demonstrates the growing potential of polymer photocatalysts for oxygen evolution by structural engineering and post-synthetic metalation.

Abstract:Structural engineering of the coordinatively unsaturated metal sites in 2D metal‐porphyrin frameworks enables initiator‐free, broadband light‐controlled synthesis of ultrahigh molecular weight polymers (Mn > 1 000 000) with low dispersity (Đ ≈ 1.5) through a surface‐coordination promoted PET and hole‐mediated reversible deactivation mechanism. Metal‐organic frameworks bearing coordinatively unsaturated metal sites (CUSs) exhibit distinctive interactions toward guest molecules, thereby presenting intriguing properties in photocatalytic applications. Herein, an adaptable strategy is established to create 2D metal‐porphyrin frameworks while engineering the CUSs based on the use of bivalent metal nodes (Zn2+, Co2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Cd2+) and Zr‐O clusters. The strong surface‐coordination effect reduces the energy barriers to activate acrylate monomers adsorbed to the nanosheet frameworks, enabling the generation of anion radicals through a broadband light‐induced electron transfer pathway. Particularly, the photocatalytic cycle offers a hole‐mediated deactivation mechanism to regulate the radical concentrations in the polymerization system, while the propagating chains exhibit a surface‐confined growth behavior that significantly inhibits recombination terminations. Extensive mechanistic studies and theoretical calculations reveal the molecular‐level guest‐framework interactions and establish the guidelines to screen metal centers for fabricating valid photocatalysts and monomers compatible with photo‐regulated polymerization. A series of ultrahigh molecular weight polymers with Mn > 1 000 000 and relatively low dispersity (Đ ≈ 1.5) are obtained upon exposure to the full spectrum of visible light. This study provides novel inspirations for harnessing natural sunlight to drive macromolecular synthesis with minimal energy consumption.

Abstract:Covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) have been recently employed for visible light-driven photocatalysis due to their unique optical and electronic properties. However, the usually highly hydrophobic nature of CTFs, which originates from their overall aromatic backbone, leads to limitations of CTFs for applications in aqueous media. In this study, we aim to extend the range of the application media of CTFs and design hybrid material of a CTF and mesoporous silica (SBA-15) for efficient photocatalysis in aqueous medium. A thiophene-containing CTF was directly synthesized in mesopores of SBA-15. Due to the high surface area and the added hydrophilic properties by silica, the hybrid material demonstrated excellent adsorption of organic molecules in water. This leads not only to high photocatalytic performance of the hybrid material for the degradation of organic dyes in water, but also for efficient photocatalysis in solvent-free and solid state. Furthermore, the reusability, stability and easy recovery of the hybrid material offers promising metal-free heterogeneous photocatalyst for broader applications in different reaction media.

Abstract:In this study, a new strategy to establish a 3D local connection of building synthons and tune the functionalities of 2D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) was developedvia in situincorporation of multi-branched building blocks during the synthesis of COFs. The new COF materialCPF-3retains the features including surface area, crystallinity and stability of the pristine 2D COFCOF-LZU1and expands the light absorption range to the visible-light regionviaincorporation of accessible photoactive porphyrin sites with the 3D local connection. The Sn(iv)-metalated COF materialSn-CPF-3exhibits high photocatalytic efficiency and selectivity in aerobic oxidation of sulfides to produce highly value-added sulfoxides with up to 23 334 turnovers and 648 h(-1)turnover frequency under visible light irradiation.
Structural Engineering of Donor−π–Acceptor Conjugated Polymers for Facilitating Charge Separation: A Dual-Functional Photocatalysis

Abstract:Conjugated polymers have emerged in recent years as prospective organic semiconductors in solar energy conversion. However, developing highly efficient conjugated polymers is still a grand challenge. Herein, we first demonstrate the fabrication of two donor−π–acceptor (D−π–A) conjugated polymers (N-DEA-TBP and L-DEA-DBP) by incorporating redox-active anthraquinone into pyrene units through acetenyl linkages. Comprehensive experiments and density functional theory calculations reveal that the network-conjugated chain and acetenyl-bridged conjugated structure facilitate charge utilization and separation/transfer in the skeleton. Such advantages of N-DEA-TBP endow it with outstanding activity for the photoreduction of CO2 in H2O without a sacrificial agent and photosensitizer, affording CO as the sole carbonaceous product with a generation rate of 70.25 μmol·g–1·h–1 and nearly 100% selectivity, which is almost 2.6-fold as high as that of L-DEA-DBP. Furthermore, N-DEA-TBP also exhibits an attractive photocatalytic performance for selective aerobic oxidation of sulfides under visible light irradiation. This study contributes new insights into their underlying structure and morphology for enhancing charge separation and transfer.
