Abstract:OBJECTIVE To define the changes in variability of heart rate and of blood pressure during vasodilation in a group of hypertensive patients treated with an angiotensin II type I (AT1) receptor inhibitor. DESIGN Losartan (50 mg/day at 0800 h) or placebo were administered for 3 weeks according to a single blind, crossover, randomized protocol, to 18 hypertensive patients (16 men and two women, mean age 42 + 3.6 years). Continuous ECG recording and beat-to-beat blood pressure monitoring were carried out with subjects in the supine position and during a head-up tilt test, as well as after sublingual administration of trinitroglycerine. The elaboration of ECG traces in the frequency domain, was carried out using an autoregressive method and measured using the autoregressive moving average technique. RESULTS Orthostatic stimulus, both during treatment with losartan and with placebo, caused a significant decrease in the heart rate high frequency power; on the other hand, the low frequency power appeared unchanged after placebo and was significantly reduced with losartan. Five minutes after the administration of trinitroglycerine, the low frequency power with placebo showed a significant increase (817 -+ 221 versus 465 + 101 ms2, P < 0.03). No change was recorded in total power nor in low frequency or high frequency power during losartan therapy. The ratio of low frequency to high frequency powers showed a sympathetic prevalence during vasodilation only during placebo treatment, whereas a mainly unchanged balance was maintained during losartan treatment Blood pressure variability showed a sympathetic prevalence after upright and trinitroglycerine stimulation only in placebo-treated subjects. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrated that vasodilation is not able to evoke an unbalancing of the autonomic modulation in hypertensive patients treated with an AT1 receptor inhibitor, but permits the maintenance of a significant vagal component, thus highlighting the favorable profile of this drug in the autonomic control of circulation.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an emerging class of crystalline porous polymers in which organic building blocks are covalently and topologically linked to form extended crystalline polygon structures, constituting a new platform for designing π-electronic porous materials. However, COFs are currently synthesised by a few chemical reactions, limiting the access to and exploration of new structures and properties. The development of new reaction systems that avoid such limitations to expand structural diversity is highly desired. Here we report that COFs can be synthesised via a double-stage connection that polymerises various different building blocks into crystalline polygon architectures, leading to the development of a new type of COFs with enhanced structural complexity and diversity. We show that the double-stage approach not only controls the sequence of building blocks but also allows fine engineering of pore size and shape. This strategy is widely applicable to different polymerisation systems to yield hexagonal, tetragonal and rhombus COFs with predesigned pores and π-arrays.
Synthesizing Interpenetrated Triazine-based Covalent Organic Frameworks from CO2

Abstract:Crystalline triazine-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are aromatic nitrogen-rich porous materials. COFs typically show high thermal/chemical stability, and are promising for energy applications, but often require harsh synthesis conditions and suffer from low crystallinity. In this work, we propose an environmentally friendly route for the synthesis of crystalline COFs from CO2 molecules as a precursor. The mass ratio of CO2 conversion into COFs formula unit reaches 46.3 %. The synthesis consists of two steps; preparation of 1,4-piperazinedicarboxaldehyde from CO2 and piperazine, and condensation of the dicarboxaldehyde and melamine to construct the framework. The CO2 -derived COF has a 3-fold interpenetrated structure of 2D layers determined by powder X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and select-area electron diffraction. The structure shows a high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of 945 m2 g-1 and high stability against strong acid (6 M HCl), base (6 M NaOH), and boiling water over 24 hours. Post-modification of the framework with oxone has been demonstrated to modulate hydrophilicity, and it exhibits proton conductivity of 2.5×10-2 S cm-1 at 85 °C, 95 % of relative humidity.
A Photoresponsive Smart Covalent Organic Framework

Abstract:AbstractOrdered π‐columnar structures found in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) render them attractive as smart materials. However, external‐stimuli‐responsive COFs have not been explored. Here we report the design and synthesis of a photoresponsive COF with anthracene units as the photoresponsive π‐building blocks. The COF is switchable upon photoirradiation to yield a concavo‐convex polygon skeleton through the interlayer [4π+4π] cycloaddition of anthracene units stacked in the π‐columns. This cycloaddition reaction is thermally reversible; heating resets the anthracene layers and regenerates the COF. These external‐stimuli‐induced structural transformations are accompanied by profound changes in properties, including gas adsorption, π‐electronic function, and luminescence. The results suggest that COFs are useful for designing smart porous materials with properties that are controllable by external stimuli.

Abstract:Development of highly functionalized fully-conjugated covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with novel linkages is an emerging field. Herein, a fully sp2-carbon two-dimensional (2D) COF (TTO-COF) was designed and synthesized by acid-catalyzed Aldol reaction on the basis of the assembling triazine units into COFs uniformly. TTO-COF proved to be a photosensitive semiconductor (optical bandgap is 2.46 eV) with high chemical stability under harsh conditions (strong acid and strong base) and superior conduction efficiency of carriers, exhibiting better performance and reusability in photocatalytic degradation of dyes and C-H functionalization of arenes and heteroarenes compared to imine COFs and g-C3N4. Our work indicates that functionalized olefin-linked COF has great potential to be a kind of photocatalyst.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) olefin-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with excellent π-electron communication and high stability are emerging as promising crystalline polymeric materials. However, because of the limited species of COFs, their characteristics, processability and potential applications have not been completely understood and explored. In this work, we prepared two novel olefin-linked 2D COFs through Knoevenagel condensation of 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3,5-triazine with tritopic triazine-cored aldehydes. The resulting COFs exhibit highly crystalline honeycomb-like structures stacked from hexagonal-latticed polymeric layers and display well-defined nanofibrillar morphologies with the uniform diameters of ca. 80 nm and ultra-lengths up to several micrometers. Such COF nanofibers can be readily composited with carbon nanotubes into high-quality continuous thin films, which are further compacted by a typical hot-pressing process to enhance their densities and mechanical strength without changing their fibrous microstructures. Such film-fabricated interdigital microelectrodes and the ionogel electrolyte are assembled into planar micro-supercapacitors (MSCs), which exhibit an outstanding areal capacitance of 44.3 mF cm−2, large operating voltage window of 2.5 V, high volumetric energy density of 38.5 mWh cm−3 as well as excellent cycling stability.

Abstract:A new kind of perylene-based 2D covalent organic framework (COF) is designed and synthesized based on the C2 + C2 topological diagram. The perylene-based COF is constructed via the condensation reaction using 2,5,8,11-tetrakis((4-formylphenyl) perylene (TFPPer) and 2,5,8,11-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl) perylene (TAPPer) as building blocks. The resulting TFPPer-TAPPer-COF features high crystallinity, excellent stability, intrinsic porosity, and an electron-rich skeleton. Significantly, the electrical performance of the COF can be enhanced through the encapsulation of fullerene (C60 ) into the 1D channels via donor-acceptor interaction. Compared to the pristine COF, the electrical conductivity of C60 @TFPPer-TAPPer-COF can be greatly increased from 8.98 × 10-8 to 1.59 × 10-5 S cm-1 , meanwhile the carrier mobility rises from 1.04 × 10-3 to 4.23 × 10-2 cm2 V-1 s-1 . The improvement in electrical performance stems from the strong donor-acceptor interaction between perylene and C60 . These results provide insights into the rational construction of conductive COFs through donor-acceptor interaction and demonstrate their great potential in related application fields.

Abstract:Homocysteine is a non-protein-forming sulphur amino acid that plays an important role in remethylation and trans-sulphuration processes. In recent years, a high plasma homocysteine concentration has been implied as a possible pathophysiological factor in atherosclerosis and artery and deep vein thrombosis, probably through generation of H(2)O(2), enhanced platelet activity and increased production of macrophage-derived tissue factor. Furthermore, an increase of polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) activity mediated by homocysteine-generated H(2)O(2) has also been reported. Because some preliminary experimental results in our laboratory did not confirm this effect of homocysteine on PMNs, we investigated the effect of homocysteine on the activity of PMNs, measured by their luminol-dependent chemiluminescence. Moreover, we also studied the effect of homocysteine in a luminol-hypochlorite chemiluminescent system. Our results clearly indicate that homocysteine at micromol/L concentrations (10-100 micromol/L) slightly inhibits neutrophil chemiluminescence, while it strongly inhibits the luminescence of the luminol-hypochlorite system. Therefore, the hypothesis that homocysteine induces an increase of H(2)O(2)-mediated neutrophil activity is not supported and, probably, the common opinion that views the H(2)O(2) generated by homocysteine as a possible mechanism for cardiovascular damage should be reconsidered.

Abstract:Semiconducting polymers with ordered structures and self‐segregated nanophases are highly desirable in the development of high‐performance photovoltaic devices. Based on the reticular chemistry, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as an attractive material platform with crystalline structure and intrinsic porosity, which can be obtained through the combination of the predesigned topological diagrams and bottom‐up synthetic strategy. Significantly, various functional building blocks can be assembled into the skeletons of COFs at atomic precision, thus accurately regulating and controlling their semiconducting properties. Herein, an overview on recent advances of semiconducting COFs, sketching the programs from structural design to synthetic approach and functional exploration is given.

Abstract:Low-bandgap covalent organic frameworks (COFs) emerge as one of the most intriguing conjugated polymers for the development of electronic devices, while they often lack desirable electron affinity, thereby compromising the activity and stability in electrochemical transformation. Here, we report an n-type semiconducting two-dimensional (2D) COF, featuring a low bandgap (1.36 eV) and strong electron affinity (4.41 eV) as well as high crystallinity and porosity. The columnar stacking array of the benzobisthiadiazole moiety in 2D COFs plays a critical role in elevating electroactivity. It not only leads to the outstanding electrical conductivity and air stability upon reductive doping but also enables the boost of transformation kinetics for polysulfides on the separators of lithium-sulfur batteries causing a higher capacity and better cycling performance. The design strategy underpins the versatile development of electroactive COF materials with desirable electronic properties and promotes their applicability in energy storage and electronics.

Abstract:Covalent–organic frameworks (COFs) are especially interesting and unique as their highly ordered topological structures entirely built from plentiful π-conjugated units through covalent bonds. Arranging tailorable organic building blocks into periodically reticular skeleton bestows predictable lattices and various properties upon COFs in respect of topology diagrams, pore size, properties of channel wall interfaces, etc. Indeed, these peculiar features in terms of crystallinity, conjugation degree, and topology diagrams fundamentally decide the applications of COFs including heterogeneous catalysis, energy conversion, proton conduction, light emission, and optoelectronic devices. Additionally, this research field has attracted widespread attention and is of importance with a major breakthrough in recent year. However, this research field is running with the lack of summaries about tailorable construction of 2D COFs for targeted functionalities. This review first covers some crucial polymeric strategies of preparing COFs, containing boron ester condensation, amine-aldehyde condensation, Knoevenagel condensation, trimerization reaction, Suzuki CC coupling reaction, and hybrid polycondensation. Subsequently, a summary is made of some representative building blocks, and then underlines how the electronic and molecular structures of building blocks can strongly influence the functional performance of COFs. Finally, conclusion and perspectives on 2D COFs for further study are proposed.

A Simple Molecular Design Strategy for Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Framework Capable of Visible-Light-Driven Water Splitting

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising metal-free materials for photocatalytic water splitting because of their high surface area and predictability to assemble various molecules with tunable electronic properties. Unfortunately, 2D COFs capable of visible-light-driven photocatalytic overall water splitting are rare, partly due to rigorous requirements to their band alignments and coexistence of catalytic sites for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, 12 2D nitrogen-linked COFs are designed based on first-principles calculations and topological assembly of molecular segments with catalytic activities toward either HER or OER, respectively. The electronic band structures calculated with HSE06 method indicate that 2D COFs are semiconductors with a widely tunable bandgap ranging from 1.92 to 3.23 eV. The positions of both conduction and valence band edges of nine 2D COFs match well with the chemical reaction potential of H2/H+ and O2/H2O, which are capable of photocatalytic overall water splitting. Of particular importance is that three of them based on 2,4,6-tris(4-methylphenyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TST) can split water into hydrogen and oxygen under visible light. Our results agree with respect to the literature, with three of them having been studied for photocatalytic HER or CO2 reduction. In addition, we further experimentally demonstrate that I-TST presents both HER and OER activity under visible light. Our findings present a route to design practical 2D COFs as metal-free and single-material photocatalysts for overall water splitting under visible light.
Solvent-Free Synthesis of C=N Linked Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an emerging class of porous crystalline polymers with well-defined structures and tunable functionalities, which have fascinating applications in a wide range of fields. However, the synthetic procedures of COFs are mainly confined to the solvothermal synthesis method which usually requires harsh experimental conditions. In this work, an effective solvent-free synthesis method to construct a series of two-dimensional (2D) COFs including imine-linked, azine-linked, β-ketoenamine-linked, which avoids the complicated solvent screening process and most of the disadvantages of solvothermal methods is developed. The crystallinity and porosity of these COFs are comparable to those prepared by traditional solvothermal routes. What's more, the advantages of the solvent-free method enable the production of gram-scale of those 2D COFs through a one-pot reaction, demonstrating high industrial application potentials.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), an emerging class of organic crystalline polymers with highly oriented structures and permanent porosity, can adopt 2D or 3D architectures depending on the different topological diagrams of the monomers. Notably, 2D COFs have particularly gained much attention due to the extraordinary merits of their extended in-plane π-conjugation and topologically ordered columnar π-arrays. These properties together with high crystallinity, large surface area, and tunable porosity distinguish 2D COFs as an ideal candidate for the fabrication of functional materials. Herein, this review surveys the recent research advances in 2D COFs with special emphasis on the preparation of 2D COF powders, single crystals, and thin films, as well as their advanced optical, electrical, and magnetic functionalities. Some challenging issues and potential research outlook for 2D COFs are also provided for promoting their development in terms of structure, synthesis, and functionalities.

Photo-Stimulus-Responsive Large-Area Two-Dimensional Covalent-Organic Framework Films.

Abstract:Using an external stimulus to modulate the electronic structure of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is very important because such a response will endow them with additional functions. A two‐dimensional (2D) COF, constructed from a photo‐responsive unit (1,2‐bis(5‐formyl‐2‐methylthien‐3‐yl)cyclopentene), can reversibly switch its electrical conductivity 200 times from low state (the open form) to high state (the closed form) upon irradiation with UV light and reversible with visible light. This reversible phenomenon can be monitored through a circuit containing a light‐emitting diode (LED). Photoinduced ring‐closing/opening reactions do not destroy the integrity of the frameworks, and both processes follow logarithmic carrier generation with time. Moreover, the correlation between COFs electronic properties and changes in photoinduced kinetics and absorption curves has been demonstrated.
Direct Construction of Isomeric Benzobisoxazole-Vinylene-Linked Covalent Organic Frameworks with Distinct Photocatalytic Properties

Abstract:Vinylene/olefin-linked two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (v-2D-COFs) have emerged as advanced semiconducting materials with excellent in-plane conjugation, high chemical stabilities, and precisely tunable electronic structures. Exploring new linkage chemistry for the reticular construction of v-2D-COFs remains in infancy and challenging. Herein, we present a solid-state benzobisoxazole-mediated aldol polycondensation reaction for the construction of two novel isomeric benzobisoxazole-bridged v-2D-COFs (v-2D-COF-NO1 and v-2D-COF-NO2) with trans and cis configurations of benzobisoxazole. Interestingly, the isomeric benzobisoxazole linkers endow the two v-2D-COFs with distinct optoelectronic and electrochemical properties, ranging from light absorption and emission to charge-transfer properties. When employed as the photocathode, v-2D-COF-NO1 exhibits a photocurrent of up to ∼18 μA/cm2 under AM 1.5G irradiation at -0.3 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), which is twice the value of v-2D-COF-NO2 (∼9.1 μA/cm2). With Pt as a cocatalyst, v-2D-COF-NO1 demonstrates a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of ∼1.97 mmol h-1 g-1, also in clear contrast to that of v-2D-COF-NO2 (∼0.86 mmol h-1 g-1) under identical conditions. This work demonstrates the synthesis of v-2D-COFs via benzobisoxazole-mediated aldol polycondensation with isomeric structures and distinct photocatalytic properties.

Abstract:Reticular chemistry based on thermodynamically controlled linking modes and numerous organic building blocks has constituted versatile crystalline frameworks in molecular-level precision. However, vinylene-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are still quite far from flexible tailoring in either their structures or topologies, due to the lack of monomers with sufficient activities. Herein, we establish a strategy to synthesize vinylene-linked COFs via Knoevenagel condensation between a tetratopic monomer 2,2',6,6'-tetramethyl-4,4'-bipyridine (TMBP) and linear aromatic dialdehydes in a mixed solvent of benzoic anhydride and benzoic acid. Mechanistic investigation suggests that the condensation was promoted by a pyridine self-catalyzed benzoylation upon the cleavage of benzoic anhydride solvent molecules. The layered structures of the resultant COFs are highly crystallized into orthorhombic lattices with vertically aligned AA stacking modes, delivering high surface areas up to 1560 m2 g-1. The π-extended conjugated skeletons comprising para-bipyridyl units and vinylene linkages endow these COFs with substantial semiconducting properties, releasing visible-light-stimulated catalytic activity in water-splitting hydrogen evolution with a rate as high as 3230 μmol g-1 h-1.

Multi‐Functional 2D Covalent Organic Frameworks with Diketopyrrolopyrrole as Electron Acceptor

Abstract:By rationally designing a donor–accepter (D–A) system and utilizing diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) as an electron acceptor, two multi‐functional optoelectronic 2D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are obtained with photothermal conversion, supercapacitor property, and ambipolar semiconducting behavior. 2D covalent organic framework (COF) materials with extended conjugated structure and periodic columnar π‐arrays exhibit promising applications in organic optoelectronics. However, there is a scarcity of reports on optoelectronic COFs, mainly due to the lack of suitable π‐skeletons. Here, two multi‐functional optoelectronic 2D COFs DPP‐TPP‐COF and DPP‐TBB‐COF are constructed with diketopyrrolopyrrole as electron acceptor (A), and 1,3,6,8‐tetraphenylpyrene and 1,3,5‐triphenylbenzene as electron donor (D) through imine bonds. Both 2D COFs showed good crystallinities and AA stacking with a rhombic framework for DPP‐TPP‐COF and hexagonal one for DPP‐TBB‐COF, respectively. The electron D–A and ordered intermolecular packing structures endow the COFs with broad UV–vis absorptions and narrow bandgaps along with suitable HOMO/LUMO energy levels, resulting in multi‐functional optoelectronic properties, including photothermal conversion, supercapacitor property, and ambipolar semiconducting behavior. Among them, DPP‐TPP‐COF exhibits a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 47% under 660 nm laser irradiation, while DPP‐TBB‐COF exhibits superior specific capacitance of 384 F g−1. Moreover, P‐type doping and N‐type doping are achieved by iodine and tetrakis(dimethylamino)ethylene on a single host COF, resulting in ambipolar semiconducting behavior. These results provide a paradigm for the application of multi‐functional optoelectronic COF materials.
