Abstract:Some advanced high temperature titanium alloys are usually selected to be manufactured into blade ,disc ,case ,blisk and bling under high temperature environment in compressor and turbine sys‐tem of a new generation high thrust‐mass ratio aero‐engine .The latest research progress of 600℃ high temperature titanium alloy ,fireproof titanium alloy ,TiAl alloy ,continuous SiC fiber reinforced tita‐nium matrix composite and their application technology in recent years in China were reviewed in this paper .The key technologies need to be broken through in design ,processing and application of new material and component are put forward ,including industrial ingot composition of high purified and homogeneous control technology ,preparation technology of the large size bar and special forgings , machining technology of blisk and bling parts , material property evaluation and application design technique .The future with the continuous application of advanced high temperature titanium alloys , will be a strong impetus to the development of China’s aero‐engine technology .

Abstract:The manufacturing technology of high temperature titanium alloys, as the core and key of advanced aero-engine technology,is paid great attention recently. The development of new high temperature titanium alloys,fireproof titanium alloys and Ti-Al system intermetallics alloys are briefly reviewed. A comprehensive introduction to the basic situation of the manufacturing technologies,such as,large scale ingot preparing,ingot extrusion breakdown,blisk die forging,ring rolling of these new alloys and research advances therein is given in this work. Key issues need to pay more attention and further development suggestions in application research of high temperature titanium alloys are proposed.

Abstract:This article elaborated the development course of heat resistant titanium alloy for Russian,European and American as well as the situation on the aircraft engine serviceable application,from which one can come to the conclusion that along with the aviation industry development,the request of high property titanium alloy should be at a higher temperature to resist fatigue,creep,oxidation and has to be good thermostability in order to meet the designed requirement for the aircraft engine. Therefore in more than half of recent centuries,the people never stopped to pursue the advanced material,and enhanced the working temperature of the titanium alloy from 350 ℃ to 600 ℃,which has met the requirements for advanced engine to the material. Looking through the materials at present research,the TiAl compound will be one of the directions for the future titanium alloy.

Abstract:Key components used in the high-pressure compressor of advanced aero engines operating in the 550-600 ℃ range have an urgent demand for 600 ℃ high-temperature titanium alloy.However,the use of casting,forging,and other traditional processing techniques is not sufficient to meet the requirements for gradient or composite structures,functional integration components and complex components that are difficult to form.Additive manufacturing is an advanced manufacturing technology that offers unique advantages such as material design-manufacturing integration and complex design-customization integration.It provides a new approach to the development of new materials and technologies of 600℃high-temperature titanium alloy.Currently,attention is being paid to the processing of 600 ℃ high-temperature titanium alloy by using additive manufacturing techniques at home and abroad,focusing on the relationship among materials,processing,structures,and properties.Firstly,this paper reviews the research on 600 ℃ high-temperature titanium alloy in brief,introduces the microstructure characteristics of deposited and post-treated states of 600 ℃ high-temperature titanium alloy under different additive manufacturing processes,and analyzes key properties such as tensile properties,creep properties,thermal fatigue properties,and antioxidant properties.Then,the research progress of composite materials based on 600 ℃ high-temperature titanium alloy and gradient structure built by additive manufacturing is discussed.Finally,the prospects are provided for research directions including the development of 600 ℃ high-temperature titanium alloy materials for additive manufacturing,exploration of hybrid manufacturing processes,defect control,and establishment of performance evaluation standards.

Abstract:Conventional cast TiAl alloys have been used for the GEnx engine. However, the conventional TiAl alloys are not strong enough for applications at higher temperatures. TiAl alloys have been developed into two categories: conventional TiAl and high temperature TiAl (high niobium containing) alloys. These state-of-the-art alloys have great advantage that the service temperature is 60-100 degrees C higher than that of conventional TiAl alloys. The paper discussed the relationships among composition, microstructure and properties for high temperature TiAl alloys, including the phase relationship with high Nb contents, the high temperature strengthening mechanisms of Nb, Al, excellent oxidation resistance at high temperature, especially focusing the new technology for the fabrication and processing of pilot ingots.
Recent Development of New High-Temperature Titanium Alloys for High Thrust-Weight Ratio Aero-Engines

Abstract:Development status of high-temperature titanium alloys of aero-engine in China was reviewed.Aimed at demands of low density and heat resistant structure materials for high thrust-to-weight ratio aero-engine,recent developments and applications of TiAl alloys and SiC fiber reinforced titanium matrix composites were introduced.Currently the domestic main alloy of aero-engine application is α+β type of titanium alloy,the working temperature are less than 500℃,for using at higher temperatures near α titanium alloy (such as 600℃ high temperature titanium alloy) is still in developing stage.TiAl Alloy abroad for nearly 20 years,in the field of aero-engine has been public reports of a dozen TiAl components installed to complete the ground tests,test results are very satisfactory.Respecting SiCf / Ti composite materials in aero-engine typical applications on the blades,ring and shaft parts,US and UK have developed a number of parts,and made the engine assessment test.TiAl and SiCf / Ti composite materials are the two kinds of key structural materials for a new generation of aircraft engines with high thrust-weight ratio.

Abstract:After almost three decades of intensive fundamental research and development activities, intermetallic titanium aluminides based on the ordered γ-TiAl phase have found applications in aircraft and automotive engine industry. The advantages of this class of innovative high-temperature materials are their low density and their good strength and creep properties up to 750°C as well as their good oxidation and burn resistance. Advanced TiAl alloys are complex multi-phase alloys which can be processed by ingot or powder metallurgy as well as precision casting methods. Each process leads to specific microstructures which can be altered and optimized by thermo-mechanical processing and/or subsequent heat treatments. The background of these heat treatments is at least twofold, i.e. concurrent increase of ductility at room temperature and creep strength at elevated temperature.

Abstract:Oxidation resistance of titanium aluminide (TiAl) based alloys is a fundamental aspect for the high-temperature structural applications such as in the advanced hypersonic aircraft engines and gas turbines. The aim of this study was to identify oxidation kinetics and mechanisms through detailed microstructural characterization of a newly-developed Ti-44Al-4Nb-1.5Cr-0.5Mo-0.1B-0.1Y alloy via focused ion beam (FIB), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), along with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The alloy consisting mainly of γ-TiAl/α2-Ti3Al lamellar structure exhibited a superior oxidation resistance at 700 °C, and followed parabolic oxidation kinetics at 800 °C and 900 °C. The observed multi-layered scale structure consisted of TiO2, Al2O3-rich, Al2O3+TiO2, H-Ti2AlN+Al2O3+α2-Ti3Al, Z-Ti5Al3O2+AlNb2+Laves-(Ti,Nb)Cr2, and H-Ti2AlN/α2-Ti3Al lamellae from the outside to inside after high-temperature oxidation. The γ-TiAl/α2-Ti3Al lamellae near the scale/substrate interface were first transformed into H-Ti2AlN/α2-Ti3Al lamellae, with orientation relationships identified as ( 0001 ) α 2 / / ( 0001 ) T i 2 A l N , ( 10 1 ¯ 0 ) α 2 / / ( 10 1 ¯ 0 ) T i 2 A l N and [ 1 2 ¯ 10 ] α 2 / / [ 1 2 ¯ 10 ] T i 2 A l N . The H-Ti2AlN/α2-Ti3Al lamellae were then transformed into a metastable Z-Ti5Al3O2 phase at the scale/substrate interface. The Z-phase was decomposed to Ti3Al and Al2O3 as the scale/substrate interface moved inwardly. Ti3Al reacted further with oxygen and nitrogen to form Ti2AlN, which was finally oxidized to form TiO2 and α-Al2O3. A Nb-rich layer was present beneath the scale along with the formation of AlNb2 and Laves phase, and the doping effect of Nb to suppress the diffusion of oxygen occurred mainly in the TiO2+Al2O3 compound layer. The results obtained in this study would pave the way for the development of advanced oxidation-resistant TiAl-based materials for high-temperature applications.

Abstract:Ti65 alloy (Ti-5.8Al-4.0Sn-3.5Zr-0.5Mo-0.4Si-0.3Nb-1.0Ta-0.8W-0.05C) is the newly developed high temperature titanium alloy optimized from Ti60 alloys. The long-term service temperature of the alloy is as high as 650 °C, which is unattainable with the previous high temperature titanium alloy. It has excellent strength and excellent creep resistance, and has great application prospects in the aerospace industry. In the current study, the evolution of microstructure and texture of Ti65 alloy sheets developed by unidirectional rolling (UDR) and cross rolling (CR) followed by solution and aging treatment was investigated. The microstructure of the UDR sample consists of equiaxed α p , lamellar α s and few elongated α p , and the texture is the combination of minor B-type and major T-type texture, with the main component of basal {0001} fiber texture and { 01 1 ̄ 0 } , respectively. Due to more active slip system resulted by transformed direction, the microstructure of the CR sample consists of more elongated α p , and the { 01 1 ̄ 0 } texture characterized as R-type texture forms in addition to B/T-type texture. With aging temperature increasing, the microstructures for both transform to duplex microstructure, and the thicknesses of lamellar α s increase. B-type texture becomes stronger, while T/R-type texture are weakened, which is caused by the combination of recrystallization, spheroidization, and variant selection. An abnormal increasing of T/R-type texture but constant B-type texture happens in the CR-600 sample, which is related to high recrystallization fraction. It is expected that the research results can provide useful references for the rolling of high temperature titanium alloy sheets and the precise control of microstructure/texture.

Abstract:Titanium alloys, with their impressive strength relative to their weight, resistance to corrosion, and compatibility with biological systems, have found extensive applications in various industries. In high-temperature environments, especially within the aerospace sector, it is essential to advance titanium alloys that boast enhanced resistance to oxidation and superior mechanical characteristics. This work investigates the oxidation characteristics and mechanical performances at high temperatures of a titanium alloy with titanium silicide particles. Oxidation at temperatures of 600–700 °C over a span of 8–32 h led to the formation of protective oxide layers and moderate oxidation rates. However, accelerated oxidation and oxide spallation occurred after exposed at 800 °C for a period of 16 h, indicating inadequate oxidation resistance over 800 °C. Subsequent tensile tests at 650 °C revealed intricate dislocation patterns in the α-Ti matrix and their strong interaction with interfaces of α-Ti/Ti5Si3, which is indicative of an efficient load transfer between the precipitates and the matrix. Overall, this study offers fresh perspectives on the oxidation kinetics and the deformation processes of titanium alloys with in-situ Ti5Si3 particles at high temperatures. These insights will guide subsequent alloy development endeavors aiming to broaden the use of titanium alloys in increasingly challenging high-temperature settings.

Abstract:Ti-600 is one of the high performance titanium alloys used at 600 degrees C, which was developed in Northwest Institute for Nonferrous Metal Research (NIN) in China. The tensile and creep properties of Ti-600 alloy with different thermal treatment conditions were investigated. The results indicate that Ti-600 alloy possesses favorite comprehensive properties solution-treated at 1 020 degrees C for 1 h, then air-cool, and aged at 650 degrees C for 8 h, finally air-cooling, especially possesses quite good creep resistance. The residual deformation is less than 0.1% for the alloy exposed at 600 degrees C for 100 h with the stress of 150 MPa, and the bimodal microstructures of the alloy are almost the same as that of the alloy treated by duplex thermal treatment, only needle primary alpha phases became relatively thicker and coarsened. The ultimate strength and the elongation of the alloy tested at ambient temperature are 1 080 MPa and 12%, respectively; while at 600 degrees C, they are 690 MPa and 16%, respectively. The ductility of the alloy tested at room temperature is no less than 5% after thermal exposing at 600 degrees C for 100 h.

Abstract:Oxidation behaviour of the fire-resistant titanium ahoy, Alloy C, over a range of 600 degrees C to 900 degrees C is studied by weight gain measurements and XRD, SEM, XPS, EPMA analyses. The results show that the oxidation rate above 700 degrees C increases rapidly with increasing temperature, and at 900 degrees C is approximately linear. The weight gain of Alloy C is much larger than those of conventional high temperature titanium alloys and the titanium aluminides. The main reason for this is that: (1) A protective Cr2O3 scale does not form on the surface of Alloy C above 600 degrees C, as consequence of the low Cr content and smaller affinity of Cr for O than that of Ti for O. (2) A concentration gradient of the element V exists at the metal-oxide interfaces and porous structure forms in the scale due to volatilization of the deleterious oxide V2O5 above 700 degrees C.

The influences of solution temperature on the microstructures and mechanical properties of the as-forged high temperature titanium alloy were studied. XRD results illustrated that the phase composition of the alloy after different heat treatments was mainly α phase and β phase. The microstructures showed that with the increase of the solution temperature, the content of the primary α phase gradually reduced, the β transformation structure increased by degrees, then, the number and size of secondary α phase increased obviously. The tensile results at room temperature (RT) illustrated that as the solution temperature increased, the strength of the alloy gradually increased, and the plasticity decreased slightly. The results of tensile test at 650 °C illustrated that the strength of the alloy enhanced with the increase of solution temperature, the plasticity decreased first and then increased, when the solution temperature increased to 1000 °C, the alloy had the best comprehensive mechanical properties, the tensile strength reached 714.01 MPa and the elongation was 8.48 %. Based on the room temperature and high temperature properties of the alloy, the best heat treatment process is finally determined as: 1000 °C/1 h/AC+650 °C/6 h/AC.
Development of High Temperature Materials for Aero Engine Hot End Components: An Overview

Abstract:The present paper overviews the development of materials and superalloys for aero engine hot end components to meet the increasing trend of turbine inlet temperature. Requirement of higher and higher thrust is steadily increasing the turbine inlet temperature and the development of nickel-chromium superalloys in early 1940s could not fulfil the material capability for long. Various nickel-base superalloys developed in 1950s and 1960s could increase the life of hot end components by retaining strength and resisting oxidation at extreme temperatures. In the 1960s and 1970s, with almost stagnation in high temperature alloy development, metallurgists changed focus from alloy chemistry to alloy processing which evolved the directional solidification and single crystal casting technologies. At present, almost all fighter class engines and high bypass commercial engines are using nickel and cobalt base superalloys for hot end components and single crystal superalloys particularly for turbine blades. This paper covers the developmental phases of superalloys and casting technologies for engine hot end components. This paper will be an invaluable asset for the researchers as well as for designers of future gas turbine engines.

Abstract:TiAl alloys are potential candidate materials in automotive and aerospace industries for high-temperature structural applications. However, the low room temperature plasticity limits their wide application. Rapid solidification technique may improve the properties through modification of microstructure. In this paper, the evolution and character of microstructure and mechanical properties of rapidly solidified TiAl alloys produced with various processing methods, and the effects of alloying element additions on the solidification behavior, microstructure and properties were overviewed, including the production and stability of metastable phases, consolidation processes of rapidly solidified ribbons/powders.

Abstract:In this paper, three different double annealing treatments were applied on the 3mm-thick Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-1Mo-2Nb-0.2Si (Ti62421S) alloy plate. Optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and tensile tests were used to investigate the microstructure and mechanical properties under different temperatures of Ti62421S alloy. The results show that the content of primary α phase (αp) decreases while transformed β structure (βt) increases with the increasing first-stage annealing temperature. After double annealing treatment, ordered α2 phase particles precipitate within αp and the size increases with first annealing temperature. This leads to that with increasing first annealing temperature, ultimate tensile strength (UTS) at 600~650°C increases while elongation decreases. After 1000°C/1h/AC+ 750°C/2h/AC annealing, Ti62421S alloy plate exhibits superior combination of mechanical properties at room and elevated temperatures.

Abstract:In order to further explore the potential performance of 600 degrees C high temperature titanium alloy blisk, the design idea and corresponding manufacturing technology of dual property blisk (DP-Blisk) have been innovated by optimizing of material technology and process technology, namely, microstructural control of blade region and disc body are respectively suitable for the actual service condition requirements of aeroengine to integrate material properties and structural design perfectly. Based on reviewing the development process and application of titanium alloy blisk, the reasons for the development from homogeneous blisk to DP-Blisk of structural design in advanced aeroengines were analyzed, the latest research progress in manufacturing technology of 600 degrees C high temperature titanium alloy TA29 DP-Blisk forging was introduced. Compared with separated region temperature-controlled forging (SRTCF) process, separated region temperature-controlled heat treatment (SRTCHT) process can achieve the expected dual microstructure more easily, that is, the blade region obtains uniform and fine bi-modal structure, and the disc body obtains fine lamellar structure by means of controllable SRTCHT process, the microstructure of transitional region changes gradually along the radial direction of the blisk forging. Finally, key issues need to be solved in the future in application research of DP-Blisk of 600 degrees C high temperature titanium alloy were proposed, including precise control of microstructure and performance of blade and disc body, position and size control of the transitional region, and key service performance evaluation and research.
The castability of 600 °C high temperature titanium alloys

Abstract:600°C high temperature titanium alloys are near-alpha alloys working at 600°C in aerospace industry, are usually processed by the route of forging. However, investment casting offers another manufacturing method with economical and net-shape characteristics. It is necessary to investigate the castability of 600 °C high temperature titanium alloys, especially the mold filling capacity. In this paper, a wax mesh pattern was applied to the castability test, and the castability index was evaluated by the percentage of the filled wax pattern segments. The results showed that IMI834 has similar filling capacity compared to other 600°C high temperature titanium alloys, such as Ti -1100, BT36 and Ti6oo, while the IMI834 alloy has inferior castability compared to the Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The influence of the mold preheat temperature was also evaluated. In this study, there is no significant difference for mold temperature between 300°C and 500 °C, but the temperature of 800°C presented better castability. A flat and thin-section component of IMI834 was successfully prepared by investment casting.
Insights into Microstructural Stability and Embrittlement of TC25 High Temperature Titanium Alloy Subjected to Thermal Exposure

Abstract:High temperature titanium alloys are being urgently developed owing to the requirements of advanced aerospace industry. Performance of the alloys in service under high-temperature environments always attracts great attention. In this study, variations of microstructure and mechanical property in TC25 (Ti-6.5Al-2Mo-1Zr-1Sn-1 W-0.2Si) dual-phase high temperature titanium alloy subjected to thermal exposure have been systematically investigated by coupling microstructural characterization, compositional analyses and mechanical measurement. It is found that strength is significantly enhanced while ductility is sharply degraded when the alloy is thermally exposed at 550 degrees C for a long duration of 100 h. Microstructural observations manifest that ternary alpha-needles (alpha t) are drastically precipitated from beta-ligaments inside transformed beta-matrix (beta trans) whilst alpha 2 (Ti3Al)-phase is produced from primary alpha-phase (alpha p) through ordered transformation. The precipitation of alpha t-needles is promoted by beta-phase metastability resulting from insufficient element partitioning in the initial microstructure. The beta-phase stability also renders alpha t-precipitation encounter size effect of beta-ligaments, where the precipitation is suppressed when beta-ligaments are thin in size. Both precipitation of alpha t-needles and alpha 2-phase triggers precipitation-hardening effect, which results in strain localization and thereby regresses alloy ductility. However, further analysis indicates that compared with alpha 2-phase, alpha t-precipitation plays more adverse role in embrittlement in the current alloy. This is different from thermal-exposed behavior of most of high temperature titanium alloys reported in literatures. These findings enrich our fundamental understanding on thermal stability of high temperature titanium alloys, and provide plausible implication to improve high temperature performance via controlling phase precipitation.
