Abstract:An amidine-based fluorescent chemosensor has been prepared and is sensitive to the viscosity increase of ionic liquid formed during a specialized reaction of amidine groups with CO2, which provides a facile and visible way to detect and sense CO2. It has been found that the greener fluorescent chemosensor has unique sensitivity to CO2, extraordinarily high water-resistance and no problem of carbon monoxide-interfering.

Abstract:CO2 sensing is of great societal implications, as CO2 is a component of gas mixtures from many natural and anthropogenic processes with huge impacts on globe climate and human well-being. Herein we report a CO2 assay scheme over a wide concentration range, utilizing a fluorogen with an aggregation-induced emission feature and a liquid with tunable polarity and viscosity. The CO2 sensing process is specific, quantitative, and interferent tolerant.

Abstract:A new sensor for the fluorescent and colorimetric detection of CO(2) is described. The system utilizes fluoride to activate a tetrapropyl benzobisimidazolium salt and operates in the absence of an exogenous base. On the basis of spectroscopic and theoretical analyses, the mode of action of the present system is ascribed to the fluoride-induced formation of an N-heterocyclic carbene intermediate that reacts with CO(2) to form an imidazolium carboxylate.

Abstract:squaraine-based system was developed and demonstrated to fluorescently and colorimetrically sense CO2 gas with high sensitivity in DMSO in the presence of fluoride ion. From results, large hypsochromic shifts were observed both in the absorption spectra (134 nm) and fluorescence spectra (126 nm), and the color change of solution could be clearly observed by the naked eye in response to carbon dioxide gas. Combining H-1 NMR titration tests and theoretical calculations, a plausible sensing mechanism that the deprotonated SQ-NH2 with fluoride ion will rapidly restore on condition that acidic carbon dioxide gas bubbles in DMSO is proposed and further revealed. Abstract:Cobalt ion (Co2+) is known to be harmful for human beings, and effectively portable sensor is one of the key for its prophylaxis and treatment. In this work, Zn(CH3COO)(2)center dot 2H(2)O, Na2S center dot 9H(2)O and thioglycolic acid were used to prepare ZnS quantum dots through a facile water-bath method. The structure and morphology of the ZnS quantum dots were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was also used to observe the surface morphology of the test paper prepared by a simple dipping-drying process. The Co2+ sensing properties of as-prepared test paper were investigated. And it was found that the color of as-fabricated test paper could change from white to brown within 1 min with addition of Co2+ aqueous solution, which makes it possible for qualitative detection of Co2+ through naked eyes. In this mode, a widely detectable range from 10 to 1000 mg L-1 is reached by the test paper. In addition, through measuring the grey level of the test paper by ordinary smart phone and laptop, a semi-quantitative function of the test paper is realized. Moreover, the as-fabricated paper sensor can resist the interference of a serious cations and anions, and suits for a wide pH surrounding from 1.08 to 9.65, which makes it a promising Co2+ sensor for practical use. In addition, through X-ray diffraction and UV-vis spectra, the sensing properties of as-fabricated test paper are attributed to the chemical reaction between as-prepared ZnS quantum dots and Co2+ ions. Abstract:An unsymmetrical squaraine-based chemosensor SH2 has been synthesized, and its sensing behavior towards CO2 gas was described in detail by UV-vis and (1)H NMR spectroscopies in DMSO. The results indicated that the extremely sensitive "naked-eye" CO2 gas detection can be operated in the presence of excess [Bu4N]F (TBAF) and the sensor is easy to recycle. These properties enable SH2 to act as a CO2 and F(-) controlled "OFF-ON-OFF" switch. Combining theoretical analyses, a plausible sensing mechanism was proposed to illustrate how the receptor SH2 works as a CO2 sensitive and selective colorimetric probe in the present system.

Abstract:A novel supramolecular chemosensor (PNG) was successfully constructed by 5-(3-nitrophenyl)-furfural-functionalized Pillar[5]arene(PN) and bipyridine salt(G) via exo-wall pi center dot center dot center dot pi interactions. Interestingly, the chemosensor PNG could detect OH- and CO2 with high selectivity, sensitivity and excellent recyclable properties. The fluorescent detection limits of PNG for OH- and CO2 are 2.03 x 10(-8) M and 9.1 x 10(-8) M (2.22 ppm), respectively. The colorimetric detection limits for OH- and CO2 are 3.78 x 10(-8) M and 1.13 x 10(-7) M (2.76 ppm), respectively. This study is simple and effective for OH- and CO2 detection, and provides supramolecular fields with potential practical application in anion and gas detection.

Abstract:A chemosensor containing an o-hydroxyaniline unit as the reaction site was developed for colorimetric and fluorimetric detection of phosgene, which showed fast response (15 s), high specificity, and an extremely low detection limit. Abstract:Nowadays, developing effective CO2 detecting methodologies is of great significance. Herein, a hybrid ratiometric fluorescence sensor by decorating tetraphenylethene (TPE) and gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) into disulfide functionalized hyperbranched poly(amido amine) skeleton was designed for efficient and accurate ratiometric detection of dissolved CO2 in the range of 3.8 x 10(-4) - 1.9 x 10(-2) mol.L-1 with a detection limit of 7.8 mu M. The emission ratio and color were reversible through switching the CO2/N-2 stimuli. Finally, this fluorescent probe was proven to be effective for determining the CO2 concentration in real samples. This is the first report of watersoluble, quantitatively CO2-responsive, ratiometric fluorescence sensor synergizing TPE and Au NCs in the amino-rich hyperbranched skeleton without participation of any free organic compounds.

Abstract:A near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent “turn-on” probe is presented for dCO2 detection in aqueous medium. This probe is based on perylene bisimide-functionalized hyperbranched polyethylenimine (PBI-HPEI) polymer, which exhibits significant dCO2-sensitive NIR fluorescence via a known photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism, because of the excimer emission of π–π stacked PBI fluorophores. It is characterized with facile synthesis, fast response, excellent water-solubility and wide linear detection concentration range. It is thus capable of detecting dCO2 even in real-world carbonated beverages and drinking water samples.

Abstract:The optical carbon dioxide sensor is prepared by covering a pH sensor based on fluorescence with a CO2-permeable membrane and contacting the pH-sensitive membrane with a reservoir of hydrogen carbonate. As carbon dioxide diffuses across the membrane it causes a chnage in pH which is detected by measuring the change in fluorescence from the base form of the pH-sensitive fluorescentdye. The usable range of response depends on the concentration of hydrogen carbonate in contact with the membrane. The sensor also responds to sulfide and sulfite.

Abstract:A tetraphenylethylene (TPE) derivative (N,N-dimethyl-N'-(4-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)phenyl)acetimidamide, TPE-amidine) was designed and synthesized, and used to prepare visible CO2 chemosensors, TPE-amidine-L (liquid) and TPE-amidine-S (solid). The hydrophilicity of TPE-amidine thoroughly changed because of the unique reversible reaction between the amidine group and CO2, which controlled the molecular aggregation extent in water by CO2. Combining with the well-known aggregate-induced emission effect, the highly selective CO2 chemosensor TPE-amidine-L was developed, which has the lowest CO2 detection limit of 24.6 ppm compared with other reported CO2 chemosensors, and can be regenerated within 10 s by adding triethylamine. With the aim of being safer and more convenient to use, a polyacrylamide hydrogel containing TPE-amidine was prepared as a renewable CO2 sensing "tape" (TPE-amidine-S). The flexibility, adhesivity, CO2 sensitivity and reversibility of the "tape" is systematically investigated, showing great potential for "on-site" and "real-time" CO2 detection in practical applications.

Abstract:A simple and effective ratiometric fluorescence nanosensor for the selective detection of Cu(2+) has been developed by covalently connecting the carboxyl-modified red fluorescent cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum dots (QDs) to the amino-functionalized blue fluorescent carbon nanodots (CDs). The sensor exhibits the dual-emissions peaked at 437 and 654 nm, under a single excitation wavelength of 340 nm. The red fluorescence can be selectively quenched by Cu(2+), while the blue fluorescence is a internal reference, resulting in a distinguishable fluorescence color change from pink to blue under a UV lamp. The detection limit of this highly sensitive ratiometric probe is as low as 0.36 nM, which is lower than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defined limit (20 μM). Moreover, a paper-based sensor has been prepared by printing the hybrid carbon dots-quantum dots probe on a microporous membrane, which provides a convenient and simple approach for the visual detection of Cu(2+). Therefore, the as-synthesized probe shows great potential application for the determination of Cu(2+) in real samples.

Abstract:A sensor system suitable for monitoring changes in partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO(2)) in surface seawater or in the atmosphere has been developed. Surface seawater samples are pumped into a PVC tube enclosing an inner Teflon AF tube, which served as a long pathlength gas-permeable liquid-core waveguide for spectrophotometry. The Teflon cell contains a pH-sensitive indicator-buffer solution consisting of bromothymol blue (BTB) and sodium carbonate. Carbon dioxide in the sample diffuses into the indicator-buffer solution to reach equilibrium, resulting in pH changes, which are detected by changes in the absorbance of BTB at wavelengths of 620 and 434 nm. The pCO(2) in the sample is then derived from the pH change. The sensor has a response time of 2 min at the 95% equilibrium value and a measurement precision of 0.26-0.37% in the range 200-800 microatm pCO(2). This chemical sensor takes advantage of a combination of long pathlength, multiple wavelength detection, indicator solution renewal, and in situ automatic control technology, and has the feature of low power consumption (the average being approximately 4 W with a peak of approximately 8 W).

Abstract:A novel carbon dot/Rhodamine B-based ratiometric fluorescent probe was developed for a highly sensitivity and selective detection of nitrite (NO2 -). The probe showed colour changes from blue to orange under ultraviolet light in response to NO2 - with a detection limit as low as 67 nM in the range of 0 to 40 μM. A ratiometric fluorescent test paper was successfully prepared using the probe solution, which demonstrated its feasibility towards a rapid and semi-quantitative detection of NO2 - in real samples.

Abstract:CO2 has attracted significant attention due to its effect on global warming. Meanwhile, CO2 is also essential for the modern agricultural, food, environmental, oil, and chemical industries. Thus, the rapid and selective detection and measurement of CO2 is urgent. Since the simplicity, sensitivity, and especially non-destructive detection capacities of probes based on fluorescent molecules, fluorescence-based detecting techniques have become vital. In the past few years, remarkable developments in CO2 probes have been made, which markedly advance the environment, industry, and medical field. This review highlights the recent advances in various functional materials and small-molecule fluorescent probes for visualizing CO2. These fluorescent probes' design strategies, recognition mechanisms, optical properties, and practical applications were systematically discussed. This review is expected to promote the development of the CO2 relative field, not only in the fluorescent probe but also in the environment and industry.
