Abstract:A dual-mode colorimetric/fluorescence pH sensor was fabricated from carbon dots (CDs). It exhibited a pH response via both fluorescence and visible colorimetric observation. The CDs solution changed from red to yellow when the pH changed from acid to alkaline. Meanwhile, the color of pH test paper that incorporated the CDs changed from purple-red to orange and then to yellow. The CD fluorescence maximum was at 630 nm in acid solution and 590 nm under neutral and alkaline conditions. The fluorescence of the pH test paper changed from red to orange and then to yellow, which was better than that of the pure CDs solution. The CDs exhibited highly selective and reversible fluorescence quenching with respect to Cu2+ ions because of strong binding and fast chelating kinetics. There was a linear relationship between fluorescence quenching and Cu2+ concentration, suggesting the other promising practical usage of this sensing system. The versatile CDs-based pH sensor thus provides a basis for developing sustainable and fast-response dual-mode pH meters as well as Cu2+ sensing.

Abstract:A simple and effective ratiometric fluorescence nanosensor for the selective detection of Cu(2+) has been developed by covalently connecting the carboxyl-modified red fluorescent cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum dots (QDs) to the amino-functionalized blue fluorescent carbon nanodots (CDs). The sensor exhibits the dual-emissions peaked at 437 and 654 nm, under a single excitation wavelength of 340 nm. The red fluorescence can be selectively quenched by Cu(2+), while the blue fluorescence is a internal reference, resulting in a distinguishable fluorescence color change from pink to blue under a UV lamp. The detection limit of this highly sensitive ratiometric probe is as low as 0.36 nM, which is lower than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defined limit (20 μM). Moreover, a paper-based sensor has been prepared by printing the hybrid carbon dots-quantum dots probe on a microporous membrane, which provides a convenient and simple approach for the visual detection of Cu(2+). Therefore, the as-synthesized probe shows great potential application for the determination of Cu(2+) in real samples.
Exciton behavior control of high-quality CdSSe/CdS/ZnS quantum dots and its application for ultrasensitive sensing copper ions

Abstract:Improving the sensitivity of the fluorescence method is crucial in biosensor fields. In this study, an ultrasensitive and excellent selectivity method was developed for the detection of trace Cu2+ ions using 3-mercaptopropionic acid capped CdSSe/CdS/ZnS quantum dots (MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs) as a fluorescent probe. Through energy band engineering to optimize the interior inorganic structure and passivate the surface defects, the photoluminescence quantum yield of the MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs in aqueous solution had as high as 70 %. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) analysis revealed the prepared CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs were cubic zinc blende structure with average diameter 7.2 nm. Further, the fluorescence of the MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs was significantly quenched by the Cu2+ with fast response time through an efficient photo-induced electron transfer (PET) progress. By optimizing the thickness of CdS shell, the MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs probe with appropriate CdS shell thickness exhibited excellent linear linearity and sensitivity for the detection of Cu2+ ions with limit of detection as low as 0.05 nM. Additionally, ions interference experiments demonstrated the good selectivity of the probe towards Cu2+. Furthermore, this sensing system could also be applied to the measurement of Cu2+ ions in real water samples with satisfactory recoveries. This work provided new insights to design and synthesize high-performance QDs-based fluorescence probes with controllable exciton emission behavior for their applications in biosensor and biological fields.

Abstract:A fluorescent and colorimetric dual-mode strategy based on carbon dots (CDs) was rationally designed for sensitive determination of Cu2+. Green fluorescent CDs with high absolute quantum yield of 72.9% were synthesized by facile one-step hydrothermal treatment of triethylenetetramine and Rose Bengal. Cu2+ could trigger the oxidative and chromogenic reaction of p-phenylenediamine (PPD) to generate chromogenic PPDox, accompanied by the fluorescence quenching of the CDs. The quenching mechanism was identified as the inner filter effect between PPDox and CDs. Therefore, a colorimetric/fluorescent dual-mode detection method for Cu2+ recognition was constructed. The limits of detection for Cu2+ were 4.14 μM and 1.28 μM for colorimetric and fluorescent mode, respectively. In addition, this method had achieved satisfactory results in the detection of Cu2+ in real serum samples.

Abstract:A fluorescent chemosensor for Cu2+ has been developed based on the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics of bis(pyridin-2-ylmethylene) terephthalohydrazide (1). The dye molecule 1 exhibits a large Stokes shift of ~182nm and shows highly sensitive and selective response to Cu2+ over other metal ions by forming a 1:2 metal-to-ligand complex in aqueous solution. Cu2+-induced fluorescence quenching at 516nm was proportional to the concentration of Cu2+ in the range of 0.2–8.0μM, with a detection limit as low as 160nM. In addition, by taking advantage of its AIE characteristics, compound 1 can also enable the fabrication of test papers for in-field detections, which is challenging for many other fluorescent Cu2+ sensors due to their strong self-quenching effect in solid state.

Abstract:A fluorescent probe, N-doped carbon dots/Ag nanoclusters (N-CDs/AgNCs), was designed and synthesized successfully based on fluorescence inner filler effect (IFE) for the ratiometric and visual detection of Cu2'. Due to the IFE, the as-prepared probe exhibited a weak blue emission at 455 nm and a strong red emission and 665 nm. After adding Cu2', the red fluorescence can be quenched because of the strong chelating interaction between GSH and Cu2', whereas the blue fluorescence could be recovered because of the weakening of the IFE, accompanying by a remarkable fluorescence color change from pink to blue under a UV light. Under optimized experimental conditions, the N-CDs/AgNCs probe showed excellent selectivity to Cu2' and a good linear relationship between the fluorescence intensity proportion (I665/I455) and Cu2' concentration in the range of 0-60 mu M with a detection limit of 0.13 mu M. Further, N-CDs/AgNCs could be used for detecting Cu2' in tap water and lake water. These results showed that the IFE ratiometric fluor-escent probe may provide a new idea for the visualization and semiquantitative detection of Cu2' and imply that it has great potential to detect Cu2' in real environment water samples.(c) 2023 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have garnered extensive interest in basic physical chemistry as well as in biomedical applications due to their low cost, good biocompatibility, and great aqueous solubility. However, the synthesis of multi-functional carbon dots has always been a challenge for researchers. Here, we synthesized novel CDs with a high quantum yield of 28.2% through the straightforward hydrothermal method using Diaminomaleonitrile and Boc-D-2, 3-diaminopropionic acid. The size, chemical functional group, and photophysical properties of the CDs were characterized by TEM, FTIR, XPS, UV, and fluorescence. It was demonstrated in this study that the prepared CDs have a high quantum yield, excellent photostability, and low cytotoxicity. Regarding the highly water-soluble property of CDs, they were proven to possess selective and sensitive behavior against Cu2+ ions (linear range = 0-9 μM and limit of detection = 1.34 μM). Moreover, the CDs were utilized in fluorescent ink in anti-counterfeiting measures. Because of their low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility, the CDs were also successfully utilized in cell imaging. Therefore, the as-prepared CDs have great potential in fluorescence sensing, anti-counterfeiting, and bioimaging.
Red Emitting Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Dots for Fluorescence and Colorimetric Dual-Mode Detection of Cu 2+ and Biological Sensing

Abstract:Herein, red-emitting nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were prepared using p-phenylenediamine and polyethylene glycol 20000 as precursors. The N-CDs are spherical and uniformly distributed with average particle sizes of 2.36 nm. The N-CDs display excitation-independent fluorescence behavior with the optimal excitation and the maximum emission wavelengths centered at 487 and 628 nm, respectively. Results indicated that as prepared CDs can provide a rapid and highly selective recognition of Cu 2+ with the range of 45-70 μM and a detection (LOD) limit of 45.87 μM. A clear color change of the N-CDs solution (orange-red to black) can also be visualized by adding Cu 2+ . Moreover, a smartphone-based platform for the detection of Cu 2+ was developed to detect Cu 2+ in real time by analyzing RGB values, giving a linear range of 20-140 μM. and a LOD limit of 35.83 μM. In addition, it was applied for the detection of Cu 2+ in tap water, the recoveries were 86.18%-104.95%, and the relative standard deviations were 1.64%-2.43%. The N-CDs can be used to detect Cu 2+ in vitro and in vivo.

Abstract:Red-emitting carbon dots (R-CDs) have triggered ever-increasing interest in biochemical sensing due to their deep tissue penetration and minimal biological auto-fluorescence interference. Herein, dual-emitting intrinsic RCDs are fabricated and well-characterized. R-CDs display ratiometric and colorimetric sensing properties for heavy metal ions (HMIs, Cu2+, Hg2++, and Fe3++), with the corresponding detection limits of 24.5, 74.2, and 170 nM, respectively. Additionally, smartphone imaging colorimetry based on red-green-blue (RGB) value variations is employed to achieve real-time and on-site detection of these HMIs. Crucially, discrimination of these HMIs is facilitated by principal component analysis. Furthermore, R-CDs demonstrate effective optical sensing of these HMIs in tap/lake water and human urine with satisfactory recoveries (95.82-104.8 %). The underlying mechanism of optical sensing, which involves metal ion-triggered aggregation-induced quenching, is elucidated by spectroscopic, morphological analysis, and quantum mechanical calculations. This work presents a feasible realtime approach for the fluorescent and smartphone-assisted dual-mode detection of HMIs.
Preparation of Paper-Based Fluorescent Sensors and Their Application for the Detection of Cu2+ in Water

Abstract:Excessive copper (Cu2+) causes adverse effects on human health and the ecological environment. Traditional methods for detecting Cu2+ have drawbacks such as high detection costs, complex operating conditions, and being time consuming. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop simple detection methods to better meet specific health and environment quality needs. In this work, a paper-based fluorescence sensor was prepared (herein referred to as the as-prepared method) by immersing filter paper in aqueous polyethyleneimine (PEI) solution, and its potential use in Cu2+ detection was investigated. The results showed that the as-prepared paper samples, with fluorescence properties obtained by aggregation-induced luminescence of PEI, have selective recognition of Cu2+ based on the internal filtration effect, and the lowest detection limit is 0.03 μM. In addition, the relative error of this method is in the range of 1.80~2.23%, which is relatively comparable to the national standard method (0.63~630 μM), demonstrating high accuracy. Therefore, paper-based sensors with a simple preparation method have potential applications in the detection of Cu2+ in water.

Abstract:The pollution of heavy metals such as Cu2+ is still serious and the discharge of sewage of Cu2+ will cause damage to soil environment and human health. Herein, a biomass-based solid-state fluorescence detection platform (CPUCDs) was developed as fluorescent sensor for detection Cu2+ via fluorescence and colorimetric dual-model methods in real time. CPU-CDs was composed of xylan-derived CDs (U-CDs) and cotton cellulose paper, which exhibiting good reusability, non-toxicity, excellent fluorescence characteristics and high biocompatibility. Further, CPU-CDs displayed high effectiveness and sensitivity for Cu2+ with the detection limit as low as 0.14 mu M, which was well below U.S. EPA safety levels (20 mu M). Practical application indicated that CPU-CDs could achieve precision response of Cu2+ change in real environment water samples with good recovery range of 90 %- 119 %. This strategy demonstrated a promising biomass solid-state fluorescence sensor for Cu2+ detection for water treatment research, which is of great significance in dealing with water pollution caused by heavy metal ions.

Abstract:A novel sensing system has been designed for the detection of cupric ions. It is based on the quenched fluorescence signal of carbon dots (CDs), which were carbonized from poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) and L-Cysteine (CYS). Cupric ions interact with the nitrogen and sulfur atoms on surface of the CDs to form an absorbed complex; this results in strong quenching of the fluorescence of the CDs via a fast metal-to-ligand binding affinity. The synthesized water-soluble CDs also exhibited a quantum yield of 7.6%, with favorable photoluminescent properties and good photostability. The fluorescence intensity of the CDs was very stable in high ionic strength (up to 1.0 M NaCl) and over a wide range of pH levels (2.0–12.0). This facile method can therefore develop a sensor that offers reliable, fast, and selective detection of cupric ions with a detection limit down to 0.15 μM and a linear range from 0.5 to 7.0 μM (R2 = 0.980). The CDs were used for cell imaging, observed that they were low toxicity to Tramp C1 cells and exhibited blue and green and red fluorescence under a fluorescence microscope. In summary, the CDs exhibited excellent fluorescence properties, and could be applied to the selective and sensitive detection of cupric ion and multicolor cell imaging.

Abstract:The excessive presence of Cu2+ could be harmful to human health. Therefore, a ratiometric fluorescence sensor based on multicolor fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) was developed for Cu2+ detection. The blue and yellow carbon dots (B-CDs/Y-CDs) were synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method. After adding Cu2+, it is captured by the amino groups of B-CDs to form complexes, resulting in a strong fluorescence quenching via photoinduced electron transfer (PET). Meanwhile, the amino groups from Y-CDs also binds with Cu2+ that inhibit the internal PET thus enhancing the fluorescence of Y-CDs. The sensor has the merits in rapid, visual, and selective with a low limit of detection (LOD) at 2.29 nM. Furthermore, an intelligent device composed of portable optical detector and smartphone is constructed, which realizes the visual point-of-care testing (POCT) of Cu2+ with a LOD of 7.51 nM. The strategy provides an accessible approach for monitoring heavy metal pollution and food safety.

Abstract:In this study, a label-free "turn off" fluorescent sensor has been resoundingly fabricated using carbon dots (CDs) for ultrasensitive detection of copper ions (Cu 2+ ). CDs are prepared by solid phase carbonization method using p-toluidine and l -cysteine as the precursors. The synthesized CDs exhibited the highest fluorescence intensity with excitation and emission wavelengths set at 300 nm and 400 nm, respectively. The CDs were selective and sensitive to Cu 2+ due to the static quenching mechanism. The concentration of CDs, and solution pH and incubation time were important parameters for the developed sensor. The experimental results showed that 20 mgL −1 was enough for the analysis. As the solution pH was concerned, it was apparent that the sensor was endowed with an excellent response signal to Cu 2+ and provided high sensitivity at pH 12. The interaction occurred very quickly, and the incubation time could be set at 1 min. The sensor provided a two-stage calibration curve to Cu 2+ in the range of 0.05–0.7 and 0.7–4 μM with a limit of detection of 47 nM. The obtained results clearly demonstrated that this facile method was fast, reliable and selective for detecting Cu 2+ , which would explore a prospective strategy for developing effective and low-cost sensors for monitoring metal ions in aqueous environments.

To improve the selectivity and sensitivity of Cu2+, herein, quinoline and coumarin groups were rationally employed into a novel fluorescent sensor CQ to efficiently sensing Cu2+ through the collaboration of these two groups. Interestingly, the CQ possesses aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) properties and shows nice selective and sensitive fluorescent response to Cu2+. The lowest limit of detection (LOD) for Cu2+ is 2.81×10‐8 M. Moreover, the Cu2+ sensing process has good anti‐interference properties. The possible recognition mechanism was investigated by experiments and theoretical calculations, which supplied a deep insight not only on the collaboration of the quinoline and coumarin groups in the Cu2+ recognition process, but also on the charge transfer induced fluorescent response mechanism. The results shown that the CQ could specifically detected Cu2+ via the collaboration of the quinoline and coumarin groups through multiple coordination interactions. Importantly, test strips based on CQ were fabricated, which could act as test kits for convenient and efficient detection of Cu2+.
