Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are extensively utilized in industrial, biotechnological and medical fields because of their specific physical and chemical properties, which shown small size effects, surface and interface effects, quantum scale effects. Inevitably, wastewater containing AgNPs is leached into the soil. AgNPs in soil may be absorbed by plant roots and they affect plant growth. Understanding the complex interactions between AgNPs and plants is of crucial significance since plants are essential to the ecological environment as key players in ecosystems. Most previous reports have focused on AgNP phytotoxicity rather than positive effects in the plant field. This article reviews recent studies on the important aspects about nanoparticles including the green synthesis, absorption, migration, accumulation, biotransformation, biological effects, and the underlying molecular mechanisms of AgNPs affecting plants. We provide insights into the interactions between AgNPs and plants, helping to further understand AgNP-related effects and biosafety in agricultural production, as well as the practical application of various nanomaterials in agriculture.
Synthesis, multi-site transformation fate and biological toxicity of silver nanoparticles in aquatic environment: A review

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely used due to its unique physicochemical properties and efficient antimicrobial performance, therefore a large number of AgNPs have entered the aquatic environment and attracted extensive academic attention. This review introduces several commonly used methods for the preparation of AgNPs, including physical synthesis (ball milling, evaporative condensation, and laser ablation), chemical synthesis (chemical reduction, microemulsion, and microwave-assisted synthesis), and green synthesis methods for the preparation of AgNPs using microbial or plant extracts. This is followed by an overview of the applications of materials containing AgNPs and the pathways of AgNPs into the aquatic environment. Then, a comprehensive review of the research progress on the migration and transformation of AgNPs in natural water, sediment, wastewater, and wastewater treatment plants is presented. The transformation behavior of AgNPs in natural freshwater, sewage, and sediments includes aggregation and sedimentation, oxidative dissolution, sulfation, and chlorination, where the AgNPs in sewage and sediments end up in the form of sulfides. AgNPs in wastewater plants affect microbial activity and the removal of organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus during biological treatment. Finally, the toxic effects of AgNPs on microorganisms, animals, and plants after discharge into the aquatic environment are summarized. This work presents a full-process, multi-faceted analysis and review of the migration and transformation of AgNPs in aquatic environments, providing a theoretical reference for further research related to AgNPs.

Abstract:Nanotechnology is a highly promising field, with nanoparticles produced and utilized in a wide range of commercial products. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has been widely used in clothing, electronics, bio-sensing, the food industry, paints, sunscreens, cosmetics and medical devices, all of which increase human exposure and thus the potential risk related to their short- and long-term toxicity. Many studies indicate that AgNPs are toxic to human health. Interestingly, the majority of these studies focus on the interaction of the nano-silver particle with single cells, indicating that AgNPs have the potential to induce the genes associated with cell cycle progression, DNA damage and mitochondrial associated apoptosis. AgNPs administered through any method were subsequently detected in blood and were found to cause deposition in several organs. There are very few studies in rats and mice involving the in vivo bio-distribution and toxicity, organ accumulation and degradation, and the possible adverse effects and toxicity in vivo are only slowly being recognized. In the present review, we summarize the current data associated with the increased medical usage of nano-silver and its related nano-materials, compare the mechanism of antibiosis and discuss the proper application of nano-silver particles.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs),as common raw materials of commodities,can be inevitably released into the aquatic environment through various ways,such as synthesis,manufacturing and AgNPs products applications. AgNPs has been found in natural water bodies and wastewater treatment plants. The mitigation and transformation of AgNPs in the aquatic environment could result in the change of its valence and species. This paper focused on the physical,chemical and biological aspects and summarized the key factors affecting AgNPs behaviors,including pH,ionic strength,and electrolyte. Toxicity mechanisms of AgNPs were also analyzed. The relationship between the toxicity mechanism and their fate in the environment was established. The problems need to be solved include establishing the AgNPs concentration database in realistic waters,analyzing the fate and behavior of AgNPs in actual environment,and research on the toxicity mechanism of AgNPs. This paper is aiming at providing theoretical foundation to predict concentrations,behaviors and risks of AgNPs in the environment.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely present in aquatic and soil environment, raising significant concerns about their impacts on creatures in ecosystem. While the toxicity of AgNPs on microorganisms has been reported, their effects on biogeochemical processes and specific functional microorganisms remain relatively unexplored. In this study, a 28-day microcosmic experiment was conducted to investigate the dose-dependent effects of AgNPs (10 mg and 100 mg Ag kg −1 soil) on nitrogen transformation and functional microorganisms in agricultural soils. The molecular mechanisms were uncovered by examining change in functional microorganisms and metabolic pathways. To enable comparison, the toxicity of positive control with an equivalent Ag + dose from CH 3 COOAg was also included. The results indicated that both AgNPs and CH 3 COOAg enhanced nitrogen fixation and nitrification, corresponding to increased relative abundances of associated functional genes. However, they inhibited denitrification via downregulating nirS , nirK , and nosZ genes as well as reducing nitrate and nitrite reductase activities. In contrast to high dose of AgNPs, low levels increased bacterial diversity. AgNPs and CH 3 COOAg altered the activities of associated metabolic pathways, resulting in the enrichment of specific taxa that demonstrated tolerance to Ag. At genus level, AgNPs increased the relative abundances of nitrogen-fixing Microvirga and Bacillus by 0.02 %–629.39 % and 14.44 %–30.10 %, respectively, compared with control group (CK). The abundances of denitrifying bacteria, such as Rhodoplanes , Pseudomonas , and Micromonospora , decreased by 19.03 % to 32.55 %, 24.73 % to 50.05 %, and 15.66 % to 76.06 %, respectively, compared to CK. CH 3 COOAg reduced bacterial network complexity, diminished the symbiosis mode compared to AgNPs. The prediction of genes involved in metabolic pathways related to membrane transporter and cell motility showed sensitive to AgNPs exposure in the soil. Further studies involving metabolomics are necessary to reveal the essential effects of AgNPs and CH 3 COOAg on biogeochemical cycle of elements in agricultural soil.

Abstract:The widespread use of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) results in their movement into wastewater treatment facilities and subsequently to agricultural soils via application of contaminated sludge. On-route, the chemical properties of Ag may change, and further alterations are possible upon entry to soil. In the present study, we examined the long-term stability and (bio)availability of Ag along the "wastewater sludge soil" pathway. Synchrotron based X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) revealed that ca. 99% of Ag added to the sludge reactors as either Ag-NPs or AgNO3 was retained in sludge, with _>:79% of this being transformed to Ag2S, with the majority (>= 87%) remaining in this form even after introduction to soils at various pH values and Cl concentrations for up to 400 days. Diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT), chemical extraction, and plant uptake experiments indicated that the potential (bio)availability of Ag in soil was low but increased markedly in soils with elevated Cl, likely due to the formation of soluble AgClx complexes in the soil solution. Although high Cl concentrations increased the bioavailability of Ag markedly, plant growth was not reduced in any treatment. Our results indicate that Ag-NPs entering soils through the wastewater-sludge soil pathway pose low risk to plants due to their conversion to Ag2S in the wastewater treatment process, although bioavailability may increase in saline soils or when irrigated with high-Cl water.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) inevitably discharge into aquatic environments due to their abundant use in antibacterial products. It was reported that in laboratory conditions, AgNPs display dose-dependent toxicity to aquatic organisms, such as bacteria, algae, macrophytes, snails and fishes. However, AgNPs could behave differently in natural complex environments. In the present study, a series of microcosms were established to investigate the distribution and toxicity of AgNPs at approximately 500 mu g L-1 in aquatic systems. As a comparison, the distribution and toxicity of the same concentration of AgNO3 were also determined. The results showed that the surface layer of sediment was the main sink of Ag element for both AgNPs and AgNO3. Both aquatic plant (Hydrilla verticillata) and animals (Gambusia affinis and Radix spp) significantly accumulated Ag. With short-term treatment, phytoplankton biomass was affected by AgNO3 but not by AgNPs. Chlorophyll content of H. verticillata increased with both AgNPs and AgNO3 short-term exposure. However, the biomass of phytoplankton, aquatic plant and animals was not significantly different between control and samples treated with AgNPs or AgNO3 for 90 d. The communities, diversity and richness of microbes were not significantly affected by AgNPs and AgNO3; in contrast, the nitrification rate and its related microbe (Nitrospira) abundance significantly decreased. AgNPs and AgNO3 may affect the nitrogen cycle and affect the environment and, since they might be also transferred to food web, they represent a risk for health. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:In recent years,the production and use of silver nanoparticles(AgNPs) has gradually increased,resulting in higher concentration of AgNPs in the environment. Material flow analysis shows that most of AgNPs in wastewater enter into wastewater treatment plants(WWTPs),and finally accumulate in the sludge. Due to the antibacterial property,AgNPs might have adverse effects on microorganisms involved in WWTPs. This paper comprehensively summarizes different sources of AgNPs in water systems(i.e. natural and artificial sources),potential risks to wastewater and sludge treatment facilities,such as the effects on removal efficiencies of carbon,nitrogen and phosphorus and anaerobic sludge digestion,and the underlying mechanisms of their toxicities to microorganisms involved in WWTPs. Finally,the development direction of this research field is also discussed. These results can provide a theoretical basis for further investigation of the potential risks of AgNPs to wastewater and sludge treatment systems.
Effects Of Silver Nanoparticle Exposure On Germination And Early Growth Of Eleven Wetland Plants

Abstract:The increasing commercial production of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) has led to concerns over the potential adverse impacts of these ENPs on biota in natural environments. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are one of the most widely used ENPs and are expected to enter natural ecosystems. Here we examined the effects of AgNPs on germination and growth of eleven species of common wetland plants. We examined plant responses to AgNP exposure in simple pure culture experiments (direct exposure) and for seeds planted in homogenized field soils in a greenhouse experiment (soil exposure). We compared the effects of two AgNPs-20-nm polyvinylpyrrolidine-coated silver nanoparticles (PVP-AgNPs) and 6-nm gum arabic coated silver nanoparticles (GA-AgNPs)-to the effects of AgNO3 exposure added at equivalent Ag concentrations (1, 10 or 40 mg Ag L-1). In the direct exposure experiments, PVP-AgNP had no effect on germination while 40 mg Ag L-1 GA-AgNP exposure significantly reduced the germination rate of three species and enhanced the germination rate of one species. In contrast, 40 mg Ag L-1 AgNO3 enhanced the germination rate of five species. In general root growth was much more affected by Ag exposure than was leaf growth. The magnitude of inhibition was always greater for GA-AgNPs than for AgNO3 and PVP-AgNPs. In the soil exposure experiment, germination effects were less pronounced. The plant growth response differed by taxa with Lolium multiflorum growing more rapidly under both AgNO3 and GA-AgNP exposures and all other taxa having significantly reduced growth under GA-AgNP exposure. AgNO3 did not reduce the growth of any species while PVP-AgNPs significantly inhibited the growth of only one species. Our findings suggest important new avenues of research for understanding the fate and transport of NPs in natural media, the interactions between NPs and plants, and indirect and direct effects of NPs in mixed plant communities.

Abstract:The advancement in nanotechnology has brought numerous benefits for humans in diverse areas including industry, medicine, and agriculture. The demand in the application of nanomaterials can result in the release of these anthropogenic materials into soil and water that can potentially harm the environment by affecting water and soil properties (e.g., soil texture, pH, organic matter, and water content), plants, animals, and subsequently human health. The properties of nanoparticles including their size, surface area, and reactivity affect their fate in the environment and can potentially result in their toxicological effects in the ecosystem and on living organisms. There is extensive research on the application of nano-based materials and the consequences of their release into the environment. However, there is little information about environmentally friendly approaches for removing nanomaterials from the environment. This article provides insight into the application of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), as one of the most commonly used nanomaterials, their toxicological effects, their impacts on plants and microorganisms, and briefly reviews the possibility of remediation of these metabolites using phytotechnology approaches. This article provides invaluable information to better understand the fate of nanomaterials in the environment and strategies in removing them from the environment.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) can provide excellent, reliable, and effective solutions for anti-microbial, drug-loading, and other purposes due to their extraordinary physical, chemical, and biological characteristics. Different methods have been used in the synthesis and characterization of AgNPs, and AgNPs have been applied in various fields of biomedicine, including dentistry, oncology, diabetology, neurodegenerative disorders, and so on. However, the cytotoxicity of AgNPs has not been solved during their application, making them controversial. The aim of this review is to summarize the capabilities, synthesis, and characterization methods, and the application of AgNPs in various biomedicine fields. In addition, the toxicity of AgNPs is explicated, and the methods of enhancing the benefit properties and reducing the toxicity of AgNPs are demonstrated. In the end, the perspective of AgNPs' research and application are proposed for the great potential in biomedicine contributing to human health.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been one of the most attractive nanomaterials in biomedicine due to their unique physicochemical properties. In this paper, we review the state-of-the-art advances of AgNPs in the synthesis methods, medical applications and biosafety of AgNPs. The synthesis methods of AgNPs include physical, chemical and biological routes. AgNPs are mainly used for antimicrobial and anticancer therapy, and also applied in the promotion of wound repair and bone healing, or as the vaccine adjuvant, anti-diabetic agent and biosensors. This review also summarizes the biological action mechanisms of AgNPs, which mainly involve the release of silver ions (Ag+), generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), destruction of membrane structure. Despite these therapeutic benefits, their biological safety problems such as potential toxicity on cells, tissue, and organs should be paid enough attention. Besides, we briefly introduce a new type of Ag particles smaller than AgNPs, silver Ångstrom (Å, 1 Å = 0.1 nm) particles (AgÅPs), which exhibit better biological activity and lower toxicity compared with AgNPs. Finally, we conclude the current challenges and point out the future development direction of AgNPs.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as one of the most widely used metal nanomaterials can enter soil and water environment via various pathways, exert toxicity on water-borne organisms and deteriorate the aquatic eco-environment. With complex composition of natural water, the physicochemical property of AgNPs as nano materials makes their transformation process more complicated in water system. Therefore, understanding of the fate and transport of AgNPs in aqueous environment is extremely important for water quality management and protection of the eco-environment. Deve-lopment of modern science and technology has made it possible to study the process of the dissolution of AgNPs in environment. This paper summarized the source and risk of AgNPs in environment, analyzed impacts of environmental factors such as pH, dissolved oxygen, ionic strength and intrinsic factors of AgNPs such as particle size and coating on the AgNPs transformation in water environment, and summarized the main analytical techniques for the AgNPs size, potential and morphology. Finally, this paper pointed out the major research gaps in the current research and provided prospective for the future research.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have gained significant attention in various fields due to their unique properties, but their release into the environment has raised concerns about their environmental and biological impacts. Silver nanoparticles can enter plants following their exposure to roots or via stomata following foliar exposure. Upon penetrating the plant cells, AgNPs interact with cellular components and alter physiological and biochemical processes. One of the key concerns associated with plant exposure to AgNPs is the potential of these materials to induce oxidative stress. Silver nanoparticles can also suppress plant growth and development by disrupting essential plant physiological processes, such as photosynthesis, nutrient uptake, water transport, and hormonal regulation. In crop plants, these disruptions may, in turn, affect the productivity and quality of the harvested components and therefore represent a potential threat to agricultural productivity and ecosystem stability. Understanding the phytotoxic effects of AgNPs is crucial for assessing their environmental implications and guiding the development of safe nanomaterials. By delving into the phytotoxic effects of AgNPs, this review contributes to the existing knowledge regarding their environmental risks and promotes the advancement of sustainable nanotechnological practices.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (NPs) are used in more consumer products than any other nanomaterial and their release into the environment is unavoidable. Of primary concern is the wastewater stream in which most silver NPs are transformed to silver sulfide NPs (Ag2S-NPs) before being applied to agricultural soils within biosolids. While Ag2S-NPs are assumed to be biologically inert, nothing is known of their effects on terrestrial plants. The phytotoxicity of Ag and its accumulation was examined in short-term (24 h) and longer-term (2-week) solution culture experiments with cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) exposed to Ag2S-NPs (0-20 mg Ag L-1), metallic Ag-NPs (0-1.6 mg Ag L-1), or ionic Ag (AgNO3; 0-0.086 mg Ag L-1). Although not inducing any effects during 24-h exposure, Ag2S-NPs reduced growth by up to 52% over a 2-week period. This toxicity did not result from their dissolution and release of toxic Ag+ in the rooting medium, with soluble Ag concentrations remaining below 0.001 mg Ag L-1. Rather, Ag accumulated as Ag2S in the root and shoot tissues when plants were exposed to Ag2S-NPs, consistent with their direct uptake. Importantly, this differed from the form of Ag present in tissues of plants exposed to AgNO3. For the first time, our findings have shown that Ag2S-NPs exert toxic effects through their direct accumulation in terrestrial plant tissues. These findings need to be considered to ensure high yield of food crops, and to avoid increasing Ag in the food chain.

Furthermore, the tremendous attention of AgNPs in scientific fields is due to their multiple biomedical applications such as antibacterial, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory activities, and they could be used for clean environment applications. In this review, we briefly describe the types of nanoparticle syntheses and various applications of AgNPs, including antibacterial, anticancer, and larvicidal applications and photocatalytic dye degradation. It will be helpful to the extent of a better understanding of the studies of biological synthesis of AgNPs and their multiple uses.

Abstract:Increased amount of nano-silver will be released into domestic and industrial waste streams due to its extensive application. However, great controversy still exists on the effects of silver nanoparticle (Ag-NP) on biological wastewater treatment processes and a toxicology model has not been built yet. Four sequencing batch reactors with activated sludge has been run for over three months with different silver species at a concentration of 1mg Ag/L in influent. Both freshly prepared Ag-NPs and aged Ag-NPs were tested with released silver ion as control. Results in this study showed that Ag-NPs, especially freshly prepared Ag-NPs, can help to maintain or even increase the diversity of microbial community in activated sludge and the biomass concentration even under long-term treatment. It indicates that the hormesis model need to be considered for the toxicology of Ag-NPs.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), known for their antimicrobial properties, are increasingly being recognized as a water pollutant , with their physicochemical properties varying based on particle size. However, there is a lack of research on whether presence of AgNPs and their particle size affect bacterial communities in water bodies. In this study, the water from Chaohu Lake was collected and spiked with AgNPS of different particle sizes of (5 nm, 50 nm, and 100 nm) to stimulate the microbial response. Our findings revealed that the presence of AgNPs could significantly disrupt bacterial community structure and strengthen the associations between certain bacteria, with significant impacts observed on nitrifying and denitrifying processes. Different particle sizes of AgNPs had various effects on bacterial community structure, with small-sized AgNPs affecting the bacterial community the most. Moreover, the presence of AgNPs and their varying particle sizes were observed to significantly affect the nitrogen cycle, carbon cycle , and respiration, thus imposing significant impacts on other ecological functions of aquatic ecosystems. This study provides a baseline study on the aquatic ecotoxicological effects of AgNPs.
