Abstract:The French philosopher Alain Badiou (1937–) is one of the most significant philosophers of our time, well known for his meticulous work on rethinking, renewing, and thereby strengthening philosophy as an academic discipline. In short, his philosophy seeks to reveal and make sense of the potential of radical innovations in, or transformations of, any given situation. Although he has not written extensively on education, the pedagogical theme is vital, constitutive, and ongoing throughout his work. Badiou is an outspoken critic of the analytic and postmodern schools of thought, as he strongly promotes the virtue of curiosity, and prospects of “an education by truths.” “Truths” are not to be confused with matters of knowledge or opinion. Truths are existential, ongoing, and open-ended ontological operations that do not belong to any epistemic category. An education by such truths operates through a subtraction from the state of the situation and proposes a different direction regarding the true life. According to Badiou, the task of philosophy is to think these truths as processes that emerge from and pursue gradually transformations of particular situations. Overall, the structure of Badiou’s philosophical system demonstrates an extraordinary ontological style as it concurrently stands in relation to, and breaks off from, the history of contemporary French philosophy, German Idealism, and Greek antiquity. His system, which is of vast complexity, is based on mathematical set theory, consisting of a series of determinate negations of the history of philosophy, and also created by the histories of what Badiou terms philosophy’s conditions: science, art, politics, and love.

Abstract:For history researchers, it is not a needless luxury to consider from time to time the content and the significance of the basic concepts they use, certainly if they have the ambition to interpret and/or explain history in addition to purely describing it. This self-reflection, compelled by the annually recurring dialogue with educational philosophers (cf. Smeyers & Depaepe, 2006),2 need not necessarily place an emphasis on philosophical abstraction but can just as well start from an examination of the history of one’s own research. Such an approach need not succumb to navel-gazing. Instead, such historical self-reflection possibly points to the creeping (and thereby largely unconscious) shifts in meaning that accompany various fashions (consider the swirling “turns” of recent years), which affect the social scientific vocabulary (historiographic, philosophical, pedagogical, psychological sociological, etc.)

Abstract:Bildung is thought to be one of the core German pedagogical concepts.As a kind of life ideal with its neo-humanistic and aesthetic considerations,the aim of Bildung is not the replicable products in the sense of educational technique but the wakening of a conscious self-becoming of life.Accordingly,education is not a kind of technical poiesis,but a particular form of praxis aiming at promoting the self-activities of life.The knowledge of education is knowledge of pedagogy,instead of educational sciences,because the increasing development of the educational sciences based on the psychology and sociology will logically lead to the disappearance of the identity of pedagogy.

Abstract:In this paper, I discuss my personal journey through one research tradition, that of the resources framework, and how it has evolved over time. In my present work, understanding learners' reasoning in physics in terms of the construction of large-scale models from small-scale resources emphasizes the person doing the constructing over the physics they are discussing. In this human-centered approach, I find value not in the correctness or incorrectness of a given response, but in the nature of construction, the individual's evaluation of their own ideas, and the communication between learners as they seek to understand each other. The resources framework has driven my attention toward a human-centered approach, and has had an effect on both my professional and personal life, in the process. In addition, events in my personal life have proven relevant to my professional work in ways that are reflected by my use of the resources framework to understand knowledge and learning.

Abstract:One of R. S. Peters' interests was psychoanalysis. In this paper, I explore the relation between Peters' philosophy of moral education and his Freudian psychology. In section 2 of the paper, I introduce Peters' Freudian supplementation of the Piaget-Kohlberg model of moral development. To clarify the way in which Peters deals with two unresolved issues of this model, I examine, in section 3, his account of Freud's conceptions of mental health and illness, character and the emotions. In section 4, I bring to light the continuity between Freudian psychology and Peters' levels of life theory. In section 5, I employ this Freud-inspired anthropological theory to elucidate Peters' comprehensive analysis of the concept of education.

Abstract:The pedagogical relation, the idea of a special relationship between teacher and child, has long been a central theme or ‘problem’ in interpretive studies of education, with the term having been established in English some 25 years ago by Max van Manen. Speaking more broadly, themes of ‘student-teacher relations’ and ‘pedagogies of relation’ are common in both empirical and theoretical literature. The German educationist Herman Nohl (1879–1960) was the first to give the phrase ‘pedagogical relation’ explicit description and definition, and as I show, a steady stream of educationists have followed in his wake. Nohl’s notion has subsequently been revised and criticized by prominent continental scholars, and much from these continental conceptions—particularly the exclusive focus on the child’s experience—has been retained or strengthened in English by van Manen and others. However, in the light of ongoing adult and teacher fallibility this paper argues that the weakness, hesitation and subjectivity of the educator must also be accounted for in any understanding of the pedagogical relation. In tracing the 90-year trajectory of this notion, the paper consequently concludes that moments of ‘interruption’ and ‘hesitation’ must be seen as integral, not accidental, to pedagogy and its relations.

Abstract:Being independent of the influence of the continental phenomenological movement, Ludwig Wittgenstein developed his own edition of “phenomenology” as soon as he returned to Cambridge University at the beginning of 1929. What’s the definition of his “phenomenology”? When and how this “phenomenology” came into being? What kind of role did it play in his philosophical transition? What is the relationship between his “phenomenology” and Husserl’s relevant ideas? ——Since the so-called “the puzzles of Wittgenstein’s phenomenology” was discovered by Herbert Spiegelberg in 1968, different strategies of interpreting Wittgenstein’s “Phenomenology” appeared in the international philosophical circle one after another. This article, however, would be devoted into introducing these achievements to the readers in order to demonstrate to the Chinese-spoken philosophical circle the philosophical significance of Wittgenstein’s “phenomenological period” and the difficulties in interpreting it, and provides basic academic background for the discussion.

Abstract:In this essay, which is a response to five papers on Heidegger and education but can also be read independently, I argue that it is only when we introduce the German distinction between ‘Bildung’ and ‘Erziehung’ that it becomes possible to discuss in sufficient detail the possibilities and limitations of a Heideggerian account of and engagement with ‘education’. Central to my argument is the suggestion that whereas Heidegger provides a radical critique of the humanistic foundations of ‘Bildung’, he nonetheless remains caught in the ‘logic’ of ‘Bildung’ by assuming that education ultimately has to do with the becoming of the self. The difference Heidegger seeks to make is that this becoming of the self does not take place through an engagement with the world of beings—the world of things about which we can have positive knowledge—but rather takes place in the encounter with the Being of beings—an encounter in which Being shows itself to us, and we are receivers and custodians of Being. Against this background I show that what is absent in this configuration is an altogether different possibility, not one where we are listening, but one where we are being addressed or, in other educational terms, where we are being taught. Whereas several authors of the papers under discussion seem to have a certain fear of teaching on the assumption that teaching can only appear as an act of power that limits rather than that it enhances freedom, I explore the opposite option—one where the act of teaching and the experience of being taught are precisely aimed at my freedom, albeit that this freedom is not understood as sovereignty but in terms of authority, that is, in relation to working through the difficult challenge as to what legitimately should have power over me. This altogether different educational possibility brings us from the logic of ‘Bildung’ to the logic of ‘Erziehung’. Whereas Heidegger and some of the authors of the papers under discussion did try to ‘move’ education understood as ‘Bildung’ from beings to Being, the shift from ‘Bildung’ to ‘Erziehung’ seems not to have been considered explicitly, although it is addressed and in a sense enacted by some of the essays. I conclude by arguing that it is only when we are able to overcome our fear of teaching that the humanism that troubles ‘Bildung’ can really be addressed.

Abstract:A dualism characteristic of modern philosophy is the conception of the inner and the outer as two independently intelligible domains. Wittgenstein’s attack on this dualism contains deep insights. The main insight (excavated from §304 and §293 of the Philosophical Investigations ) is this: our sensory consciousness is deeply shaped by language and this shaping plays a fundamental role in the etiology of the dualism. I locate this role in the learning of a sensation-language (as described in §244), by showing that this learning is, under another aspect, the incision of language , namely the infliction of cuts upon certain natural-primitive unities between the inner and the outer. These cuts, driven by powerful forces, eventually harden into an entrenched division between the inner and the outer, thereby providing a constant soil for the dualism. That this dualism is rooted in the very learning of a language is cause for ambivalence about language.

Abstract:In a sense, pedagogy has grown up in its dialogue with other interrelated discipline such as philosophy. It stepped from “pro-philosophy” to “pro-science”, and are making for the stage of inquiry for “knowledge about action-logic”. In the course of dialogue, pedagogy has drawn on plenty of resources in thought from the theories and belief embedded in Marxism, methodology of natural science and system science, Humanism, Analytical philosophy, Phenomenology, Hermeneutics and Postmodernism. In a result, Pedagogy has changed its form of knowledge, way of discourse and thought, with its position of discipline blowing hot and cold. As the increasing intersection, penetration and inosculation tend to make the boundary between disciplines illegible, and different disciplines have mutual reference, overlap and share in knowledge, issues and method, awareness of and insistence on the position of discipline peculiar to pedagogy, are the significant mark in which pedagogy is different from other disciplines, as well as the fundamental reason for justifying its rationality.

Abstract:Philosophy is often thought to deal with problems, enigmas or conundra it seeks to answer, for instance through a theory. Wittgenstein and Hegel both challenge this view in different ways. Wittgenstein can be understood as passing through two main phases. In an initial phase, he proposes a view that presupposes a conception of language he later rejects. In a later phase, he rejects his earlier theory and philosophy in all its forms. In other words, after the effective refutation of what he earlier thought was the only approach, he drew the conclusion that there was no longer any possibly valid approach. This suggests the only possible result is skepticism, not about knowledge but rather about philosophy as a source of knowledge. In this sense, Wittgenstein suggests that in his later thought he brings philosophy to a skeptical end. In comparison to Wittgenstein, Hegel has a less extreme view. He neither claims to formulate the only possible approach to knowledge, hence to bring the tradition to an end, nor that philosophy ends in skepticism. He rather vindicates the Parmenidean approach that we are justified in claiming to know that knowledge is possible within the limits of the identity of thought and being.

Abstract:When life is recognized as the basic concept at the core of pedagogy, it means pedagogy will build its own subject field of vision by thinking about life and then establish pedagogy's concept, category, way of thinking and logic system. It also means pedagogy chooses life as its approach to the educational phenomena, thus establishing its own perspective of thinking and researching, i.e. observing, interpreting and explaining educational activity from the perspective of life. During this process pedagogy also finds its own way of practical approach to the understanding of life so that pedagogy will become one with life practice as its core. Here emerge two interactive processes: placing pedagogy in the horizon of life and having life in the vision of pedagogy.

Abstract:Aim. The aim of the article is to define the possibilities of education in the concept of postmetaphysical thinking. The definition takes into account the need to understand education as an open process of developing an authentic personality. The new understanding of education helps to orient the educational process in the family and school towards the person of the pupil and the development of his real possibilities. Concept. The article is built around a comparison of metaphysical and post-metaphysical thought. It describes the fundamental differences between both types of thinking, with a focus on the importance of others and openness in the interpretation of fundamental pedagogical categories. Attention is paid to the understanding of the pupil, the teacher, the process of education, and the goal of education. The pupil is interpreted as a person who has individual and original abilities. The process of education is understood as the development of the individual abilities of the pupil. The objective of education is determined on the basis of the pupil's abilities. The aim of upbringing is not predetermined. The openness of pedagogical practice necessitates the openness to continuous updating of educational and training methods. Results and conclusion. Creation of a basic framework for the innovation of pedagogical practices. The proposed framework views pedagogical success as a means of finding a sense of self, leaves room for alternative solutions, and emphasises the importance of students' individual abilities. It allows for pedagogy based on acceptance of otherness. Through the pedagogy thus interpreted, it creates a path for creative solutions to educational problems while developing not only the individual abilities of students but also their capacity for tolerance, which is a prerequisite for the functioning of a democratic society, through the pedagogy thus interpreted. Cognitive value. The article presents problems that arise when using classical pedagogy, i.e. pedagogy based on metaphysical thinking. The aim of classical pedagogy is the passive passing of knowledge and the production of graduates with the same abilities and knowledge. Pedagogy based on a postmetaphysical approach educates pupils whose value is based on human nature. Each pupil is accepted according to his individual abilities. He is an original and authentic human being.

Abstract:Education must go beyond the borders of the disciplines and educators must make individual learning development a top priority for education if they wish to fulfill their mission in theory and practice, and in order to promote the social development by cultivating and developing the different individual learning. While individual development is a public issue, not a personal affair, it is also a social issue. Thus, educational research bases itself on each type of development, as well as to its existence in the mosaic of social and cultural understanding of the situation. Consequently, theoretical concept and empirical study combine an intrinsic pedagogical paradigm mechanism.Furthermore as a theoretical approach to methodology, awareness of the value of education and method-related activities, pedagogy becomes a special way of seizing the world.
A Meeting of the Conceptual and the Natural: Wittgenstein on Learning A Sensation-Language

Abstract:Since the rise of modern natural science there has been deep tension between the conceptual and the natural. Wittgenstein's discussion of how we learn a sensation‐language contains important resources that can help us relieve this tension. The key here, I propose, is to focus our attention on animal nature, conceived as partially re‐enchanted (in the sense recommended by John McDowell). To see how nature, so conceived, helps us relieve the tension in question, it is crucial to gain a firm and detailed appreciation of how the primitive‐instinctive, a central part of animal nature, actually serves the conceptual. I offer such an appreciation by closely examining §244 of the Philosophical Investigations and Peter Winch's discussion of it. The general aim is to bring out a certain kind of Wittgensteinian “naturalism” (not as a theory but as a general reminder), a “naturalism” that is fully alive to the rootedness of conceptuality in nature. A concomitant aim is to illustrate the truth of Wittgenstein's saying that in philosophy one often has to pay close attention to details.

Abstract:So far, pedagogy has not formed its own unique visual angle and thinking mode to understand humans and the world in general; consequently, it is always counting upon other subjects, which is the root of the crisis in pedagogy. Focusing on the “visual angle” and “thinking mode”, this article puts forward a new proposition “pedagogic understanding” to make a concrete analysis of a basic hypothesis, some basic problems and some research ways. The purpose is to form pedagogy’s own way of understanding on the foundation of delimitation and integration with other subjects.

Abstract:Abstract Tolstoy had a life-long interest in education and philosophy. However, he was suspicious of using philosophy as a foundation for educational practice or applying philosophy to the educational problems of his day, most importantly, the development of an education system in Russia around the time of the emancipation of the serfs. Tolstoy’s rejection of the philosophy of education arose from his concerns about what would be identified in contemporary terminology as ‘epistemic injustice’ or ‘epistemicide’. How could European philosophy inform a curriculum and pedagogy for the Russian peasantry when the peasants’ own forms of knowledge were more valuable to their ways of life? Tolstoy sought to answer this question by engaging with children in peasant schools. This experience informed the development of his own worldview, articulated in the latter years of his life – a vision of uniting the insights of indigenous peoples from various times and places to inform what he considered to be the pursuit of authentic knowledge. This article considers Tolstoy’s apparent rejection of the philosophy of education, exploring how this seemingly bombastic position led to the evolution of an innovative meta-philosophy that offers some contribution to thinking about contemporary educational problems.

Abstract:Although the Philosophy for/with Children (P4wC) movement seems to have overcome two major points of criticism, these critical concerns can still be found in the literature today. The first question is whether P4wC can be placed in the field of philosophy at all, and the second asks whether children possess the cognitive abilities necessary to engage in philosophical discourse. One of the more recent articles voicing these concerns is authored by Caroline Heinrich, who describes P4wC as “an assault on philosophy and an assault on children” and argues that P4wC is a “concept imposed by adults on children.” She maintains that P4wC ignores “children’s thinking, questioning and play.” Furthermore, Heinrich states that P4wC cannot be called philosophy because children are not able to philosophize. In most of her argumentation, refering to Jan Piaget’s theoretical account of the cognitive development of children. Although the P4wC discourse has already dealt with these questions over the last few decades, it seems that there is still a need for further clarification. This paper provides an overview of the main points of criticism, which form the starting point of the author’s Polylogical Process Model of (Elementary-)Philosophical Education (PPEE model). This interdisciplinary approach, which is based on the constructivist conceptual change/growththeory of Stella Vosniadou and William Brewer, attempts to add new perspectives to two central questions addressing the P4wC movement: first, can P4wC actually be called philosophy?; second, do children have the cognitive abilities to engage in philosophical discourse? In addition, the question arises as to which pedagogical considerations based on constructivist learning theory could be added to P4wC methodology? The aim of the interdisciplinary PPEE model is to build a broader scientific foundation that has the potential to reduce the main points of criticism of the P4wC movement.
