Abstract:Metal phosphates have been considered as source materials for photocatalytic applications in the degradation of organic pollutants due to their diverse properties. In the present work, the parent phosphate material, K 2 Zn(PO 3 ) 4 , and its nitrogen doped analog are prepared by the solid-state method, while the silver doped compound is obtained by facile ion-exchange process. The as-prepared materials were thoroughly characterized by different techniques such as powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The band gap energy of as-prepared samples is determined from their UV/Vis DRS measurements, and it is found to be significantly lower for the doped materials. The photocatalytic degradation of the methylene blue (MB) dye under visible light radiation was investigated using the as-prepared samples. The effect of cation and anion doping on photocatalytic activity of K 2 Zn(PO 3 ) 4 was investigated. The high photocatalytic activity was observed in the case of nitrogen-doped K 2 Zn(PO 3 ) 4 , which could be attributed to maximum light absorption into the visible region and its lower band gap energy. The involvement of reactive species in photocatalytic dye degradation was also studied by scavengers quenching tests. Furthermore, the N-doped K 2 Zn(PO 3 ) 4 showed its photocatalytic efficiency for MB dye degradation up to a minimum of three cycles, retaining its chemical stability.
