Abstract:In a strongly-coupled quark-gluon plasma, collective excitations of gluons and quarks should dominate over the excitation of individual quasi-free gluon and quark modes. To explore this possibility, we computed screening masses for ground-state light-quark mesons and baryons at leading-order in a symmetry-preserving truncation scheme for the Dyson-Schwinger equations using a confining formulation of a contact-interaction at nonzero temperature. Meson screening masses are obtained from Bethe-Salpeter equations; and baryon analogues from a novel construction of the Faddeev equation, which employs an improved quark-exchange approximation in the kernel. Our treatment implements a deconfinement transition that is coincident with chiral symmetry restoration in the chiral limit, when both transitions are second order. Despite deconfinement, in all T=0 bound-state channels, strong correlations persist above the critical temperature, T>T_c; and, in the spectrum defined by the associated screening masses, degeneracy between parity-partner correlations is apparent for T >1.3T_c. Notwithstanding these results, there are reasons (including Golberger-Treiman relations) to suppose that the inertial masses of light-quark bound-states, when they may be defined, vanish at the deconfinement temperature; and that this is a signal of bound-state dissolution. Where a sensible comparison is possible, our predictions are consistent with results from contemporary numerical simulations of lattice-regularised QCD.

Abstract:A condensate of charged scalars in a neutralizing background of fermions (e.g., condensed helium-4 nuclei in an electron background in white dwarf cores) is investigated further. We discuss an effective Lagrangian approach to this system and show that the strong screening of an electric charge found previously in arXiv:0806.3692 in a mean-field approximation, is a consequence of a cancellation due to a phonon. The resulting propagators contain terms that strongly modify their infrared behavior. Furthermore, we evaluate a one-loop fermion quantum correction to the screened potential, and find that it is also suppressed by the phonon subtraction. Therefore, charged impurities (e.g., hydrogen or helium-3 nuclei) will be screened efficiently by the condensate.

Abstract:We calculate the Debye screening mass in thermal, dense and magnetized QCD matter in the frame of resummed perturbation theory. In the limit of zero temperature, when the Landau energy level and Fermi surface of quarks match each other $\mu_q^2=2n|qB|$, where $q$, $\mu_q$ and $B$ are respectively the quark electric charge, chemical potential and external magnetic field, the screening mass diverges and the system is in the state of weakly interacting parton gas, which is very different from the known result of strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma at high temperature. The divergence disappears in thermal medium, but the screening mass oscillates with clear peaks at the matched magnetic field.

Abstract:We study the thermalization of gluons far from thermal equilibrium in relativistic kinetic theory. The initial distribution of gluons is assumed to resemble that in the early stage of ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. Only elastic scatterings in static, nonexpanding gluonic matter are considered. At first we show that the occurrence of condensation in the limit of vanishing particle mass requires a general constraint for the scattering matrix element. Then the thermalization of gluons with Bose-Einstein condensation is demonstrated in a transport calculation. We see a continuously increasing overpopulation of low energy gluons, followed by a decrease to the equilibrium distribution, when the condensation occurs. The times of the completion of the gluon condensation and of the entropy production are calculated. These times scale inversely with the energy density.

Baryonic Screening Masses in High Temperature QCD

Abstract:We compute the screening masses of fields with nucleon quantum numbers for a wide range of temperatures between $T \sim 1$ GeV and $T\sim 160$ GeV. The computation has been performed by means of Monte Carlo simulations of lattice QCD with $N_f=3$ flavors of $O(a)$-improved Wilson fermions: we exploit a novel strategy which has recently allowed to determine for the first time non-singlet mesonic screening masses up to extremely high temperatures. The baryonic screening masses are measured with a few per-mille precision in the continuum limit, and percent deviations from the free theory result $3\pi T$ are clearly visible even at the highest temperatures. The observed degeneracy of the positive and negative parity state's screening mass, expected from Ward identities associated to non-singlet axial transformations, provides further evidence for the restoration of chiral symmetry in the high temperature regime of QCD.

Electric and magnetic Landau-gauge gluon propagators in finite-temperature SU(2) gauge theory

Abstract:We perform lattice simulations in pure-SU(2) Yang-Mills theory to investigate how the infrared behavior of electric and magnetic gluon propagators in Landau gauge is affected by temperature. We consider the largest lattices to date, in an attempt to keep systematic errors under control. Electric and magnetic screening masses are calculated through an Ansatz from the zero-temperature case, based on complex-conjugate poles for the momentum-space propagators. As recently reported in [1], we find good fits to the proposed form at all temperatures considered, with different ratios of real to imaginary part of the pole masses for the longitudinal (electric) and transverse (magnetic) propagators. The behavior of the magnetic propagator D_T(p) is in agreement with the dimensional-reduction picture, showing infrared suppression (with a turnover in momentum) and violation of spectral positivity at all nonzero temperatures considered. The longitudinal propagator D_L(p) appears to reach a plateau at small momenta and is subject to severe finite-Nt effects around the critical temperature Tc. As a consequence, only lattices with temporal extent Nt > 8 seem to be free from systematic errors. After these errors are removed, the infrared-plateau value is considerably reduced around the transition and the sharp peak observed previously for this quantity at Tc is no longer present. The resulting infrared behavior for D_L(p) at Tc is essentially the same as for 0.5Tc . An investigation of the temperature range between 0.5Tc and Tc reveals that a less pronounced (finite) peak may occur at smaller temperatures, e.g. T ~ 0.9Tc.

Color screening in cold quark matter

Abstract:We compute---at finite quark chemical potentials---the color screening of cold quark matter at the one-loop level, comparing the normal, BCS-paired U(1)em (or Higgs) phase and a singlet phase with color-singlet condensate near the Fermi surface. The latter phase is computed using the example of two-color QCD with a color-singlet diquark condensate. In contrast to the normal and Higgs phases, neither electric nor magnetic screening masses appear in the singlet phase. The absence of a magnetic mass, within a perturbative framework, is a consequence of the proper treatment of gauge invariance. While at large momenta the gluon self-energies approach those in the normal phase, the medium contributions to the infrared region below a scale of the mass gap are substantially suppressed. Infrared gluons at low quark density in the singlet phase appear protected from medium effects, unless the quark-gluon vertices are significantly enhanced in the infrared.

Abstract:Based on a linear sigma model, we discuss the mixing between a quark condensate and a gluon condensate. It is shown that the linear sigma model will not be self-consistent if we switch off the mixing coupling between glueball and chiral fields. By introducing a proper mixing coupling, we realize the second-order phase transitions of chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement. We further show that the critical temperature of chiral symmetry restoration could not be larger than the temperature of deconfinement phase transition in all possible parameter spaces of our model.

Abstract:We study the correlator of temporal Wilson lines at non-zero temperature in 2+1 flavor lattice QCD with the aim to define the heavy quark-antiquark potential at non-zero temperature. For temperatures $153~{\rm MeV} \leq T \leq 352~{\rm MeV}$ the spectral representation of this correlator is consistent with a broadened peak in the spectral function, position or width of which then defines the real or imaginary parts of the heavy quark-antiquark potential at non-zero temperature, respectively. We find that the potential's real part is not screened contrary to the widely-held expectations. We comment on how this fact may modify the picture of quarkonium melting in the quark-gluon plasma.

Perturbative versus Lattice QCD Energy Density Correlators at High Temperatures

Abstract:Correlators of magnetic and electric field energy density are investigated for SU($N_c$) gauge theory at high temperatures $T$. At separations $z\leq 2/T$ the correlators are shown to be dominated by a power--law behavior even for finite gluon screening masses. This continuum behavior is well approximated on current $4\times 16^3$--lattices in the perturbative limit and leads to a considerable overestimate of screening masses deduced from fitting the lattice correlators with conventional exponential forms. The use of extended sources and sinks to enhance the signal improves the situation for screening masses $m\gg T$ but leads to a largely uncontrolled error for masses less than $T$. In fact, we show that recent lattice QCD data of Grossmann et al., from which a magnetic screening mass $m_M \approx 2.9 \, T$ was deduced, may even be consistent with a vanishing actual magnetic screening mass.

Abstract:We compute the baryonic screening masses with nucleon quantum numbers and its negative parity partner in thermal QCD with $N_f=3$ massless quarks for a wide range of temperatures, from $T \sim 1$ GeV up to $\sim 160$ GeV. The computation is performed by Monte Carlo simulations of lattice QCD with $O(a)$-improved Wilson fermions by exploiting a recently proposed strategy to study non-perturbatively QCD at very high temperature. Very large spatial extensions are considered in order to have negligible finite volume effects. For each temperature we have simulated $3$ or $4$ values of the lattice spacing, so as to perform the continuum limit extrapolation with confidence at a few permille accuracy. The degeneracy of the positive and negative parity-state screening masses, expected from Ward identities associated to non-singlet axial transformations, provides further evidence for the restoration of chiral symmetry in the high temperature regime of QCD. In the entire range of temperatures explored, the baryonic masses deviate from the free theory result, $3 \pi T$, by $4$-$8\%$. The contribution due to the interactions is clearly visible up to the highest temperature considered, and cannot be explained by the expected leading behavior in the QCD coupling constant $g$ over the entire range of temperatures explored.

Abstract:<p>We review lattice studies of the color screening in the quark-gluon plasma. We put the phenomena related to the color screening into the context of similar aspects of other physical systems (electromagnetic plasma or cold nuclear matter). We discuss the onset of the color screening and its signature and significance in the QCD transition region, and elucidate at which temperature and to which extent the weak-coupling picture based on hard thermal loop expansion, potential nonrelativistic QCD, or dimensionally-reduced QCD quantitatively captures the key properties of the color screening. We discuss the different regimes pertaining to the color screening and thermal dissociation of the static quarks in depth for various spatial correlation functions that are studied on the lattice, and clarify the status of their asymptotic screening masses. We finally discuss the screening correlation functions of dynamical mesons with a wide range of flavor and spin content, and how they conform with expectations for low- and high-temperature behavior.</p>

A gauge invariant Debye mass for the complex heavy-quark potential

Abstract:The concept of a screening mass is a powerful tool to simplify the intricate physics of in-medium test charges surrounded by light charge carriers. While it has been successfully used to describe electromagnetic properties, its definition and computation in QCD is plagued by questions of gauge invariance and the presence of non-perturbative contributions from the magnetic sector. Here we present a recent alternative definition of a gauge invariant Debye mass parameter following closely the original idea of Debye and Hueckel. Our test charges are a static heavy quark-antiquark pair whose complex potential and its in-medium modification can be extracted using lattice QCD. By combining in a generalized Gauss-Law the non-perturbative aspects of quark binding with a perturbative ansatz for the medium effects, we succeed to describe the lattice values of the potential with a single temperature dependent parameter, in turn identified with a Debye mass. We find that its behavior, as evaluated in a recent quenched lattice QCD study, deviates from that in other approaches, such as hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory or from electric field correlators on the lattice. In particular around the phase transition its values tend to zero significantly faster than at weak-coupling.

Abstract:At finite temperature and chemical potential, the leading-order (hard-thermal-loop) contributions to the gauge-boson propagator lead to momentum-dependent thermal masses for propagating quasiparticles as well as dynamical screening and Landau damping effects. We compare the hard-thermal-loop propagator with the complete large-N_f gluon propagator, for which the usually subleading contributions, such as a finite width of quasiparticles, can be studied at nonperturbatively large effective coupling. We also study quantitatively the effect of Friedel oscillations in low-temperature electrostatic screening.

Thermomagnetic effects on light pseudo-scalar meson masses within the SU(3) Nambu-Jona--Lasinio model

Abstract:We calculate the screening masses of pseudoscalar mesons in a hot and strongly magnetized medium within the framework of the SU(3) Nambu-Jona--Lasinio model, using a magnetic field-independent regularization scheme. Inverse magnetic catalysis (IMC) is implemented through the use of a magnetic field-dependent coupling $G(B)$, fitted to reproduce lattice QCD results for the pseudocritical chiral transition temperature $T_c^B$. For the external homogeneous magnetic field considered, neutral screening masses separate in two types: perpendicular and parallel to the direction of the field, while for charged mesons only parallel energies can be defined for each Landau level. We obtain $m_{\mathrm{scr},\perp} > m_{\mathrm{scr},\parallel}$, as expected from causality. Thermally, all screening energies are almost constant until some critical temperature, whose behavior is correlated with $T_c^B$. They rapidly increase around this value, keeping a steady enhancement afterwards due to thermal excitation. Magnetically, neutral parallel masses are enhanced (suppressed) at high temperatures when considering $G(B)$ ($G$). Perpendicular ones display a non-linear magnetic behavior for $G$ (due to increasing $T_c^B$), while they always increase with $B$ for $G(B)$. Charged parallel energies are also always magnetically enhanced. In the high-temperature limit, we show that both neutral and charged screening energies converge to $2\pi T$. At $B=0$ the model overestimates the remaining quark interaction in this regime. At $B\neq 0$ we find that, when IMC is accounted for, the interaction is suppressed as $B$ increases, a fact that appears to be at odds with currently available lattice QCD results.

Abstract:We argue that in QCD, the Debye mass requires not only a mathematical definition but also a physical one and temporal axial gauge could provide for a physical screening potential for this purpose. Unfortunately, this gauge is spoiled by problem of energy conservation rather than the well known divergence due to the double pole in the longitudinal propagator. We also show that KMS condition is violated in this gauge and is therefore not universally true.
