Abstract:As a promising alternative to Ir based acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, Ru suffers from severe fading issues. Supporting it on robust oxides such as TiO2 is a simple and effective way to enhance its lifetime. Here, we find that a simple reduction-oxidation process can further improve both activity and stability of RuO2-TiO2 composites at high potentials. In this process, the degree of oxidation was carefully controlled to form Ru/RuO2 heterostructure to improve OER activity. Moreover, due to the oxophilicity difference of Ru and Ti, the structure of catalysts was changed from supported to embedded, which enhanced the protective effect of TiO2 and mitigated the dissolution of Ru element in acidic electrolyte, making as-prepared Ru/RuO2-TiO2 with better durability at all tested potentials.

Abstract:The material innovation is prerequisite to accelerating sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics, thus promoting the realization of hydrogen energy community. Herein, we develop an oxygen-vacancy-rich TiO2 supported RuO2 catalyst (RuO2@r-TiO2) towards improved OER activity and stability. The oxygen vacancy on TiO2 not only supplies electrons to produce lower valence Ru, but also provides sufficient anchoring site for the deposition of RuO2 nanocrystal. Beyond that, it can generate strong electronic interaction between TiO2 and supported RuO2, and thereby tailors the intermediates' adsorption energy on the RuO2 surface. As a result, the derived RuO2@r-TiO2 catalyst exhibits superior OER activity and stability with the overpotential of 211 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and negligible activity degradation after 6 h operation, outperforming the non-oxygen-vacancy counterpart (223.3 mV, 12.75% activity loss) and RuO2 catalyst (234.6 mV, 42.86% activity loss).

Abstract:The development of highly efficient electrocatalysts for the sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial to meet the practical demand for water splitting. In this study, an effective approach is proposed that simultaneously enhances interfacial interaction and catalytic activity by modifying Fe2O3/CoS heterojunction using Ru doping strategy to construct an efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution catalyst. The unique morphology of Ru doped Fe2O3 (Ru-Fe2O3) nanoring decorated by CoS nanoparticles ensures a large active surface area and a high number of active sites. The designed Ru-Fe2O3/CoS catalyst achieves a low OER overpotential (264 mV) at 10 mA cm-2 and demonstrates exceptional stability even at high current density of 100 mA cm-2, maintaining its performance for an impressive duration of 90 h. The catalytic performance of this Ru-Fe2O3/CoS catalyst surpasses that of other iron-based oxide catalysts and even outperforms the state-of-the-art RuO2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation as well as experimental in situ characterization confirm that the introduction of Ru atoms can enhance the interfacial electron interaction, accelerating the electron transfer, and serve as highly active sites reducing the energy barrier for rate determination step. This work provides an efficient strategy to reveal the enhancement of electrocatalytic oxygen evolution activity of heterojunction catalysts by doping engineering.
Component‐Tunable Rutile‐Anatase TiO2/Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposites for Enhancement of Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

Abstract:As an earth-abundant and environment-friendly material, the potential of TiO2 in many field, including oxygen evolution reaction (OER), has not yet been fully developed. Here, we fabricate component tunable rutile-anatase TiO2/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) nanocomposites with high OER activity which exhibit a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at an overpotential of 283 mV. The performance is superior to the previous reported TiO2 (600 mV) and comparable with the leading results of other active materials. The catalytic mechanism is suggested according to our experimental results that the interactions between rutile and anatase, as well as RGO and TiO2 result in the enhancement of adsorption of hydroxyl. Such an adsorption is advantageous to provide a surface reaction environment and reduce the activation energy of the electrochemical process, resulting in the best OER performance. This work should stimulate the design of more materials for the improvement of OER activity.

Abstract:Oxyhydroxides hold promise as highly-efficient non-noble electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but their poor conductivity and structural instability greatly impede their progress. Herein, the authors develop a cation-doping and oxygenvacancy engineering strategy to fabricate Ru/Rh-doped FeOOH nanoarrays with abundant oxygen-vacancies in situ grown on Ti3 C2 Tx MXene (Ru/Rh-FeOOH@Ti3 C2 Tx ) as highly-efficient OER electrocatalysts. Benefiting from Ru/Rh-cation regulation, oxygenvacancy engineering, and heterojunction synergy between MXene and modulated FeOOH, the optimized Rh/Ru-FeOOH@Ti3 C2 Tx electrocatalysts exhibit excellent OER activities and remarkable stabilities with 100 h. Particularly, 3%Rh-FeOOH@Ti3 C2 Tx electrocatalyst only needs a 223 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm-2 and 306 mV to reach 100 mA cm-2 , which is superior to commercial IrO2 catalyst and most reported oxyhydroxide-based electrocatalysts. Further, systematically theoretical caculation, kinetics, thermodynamics, and microstructural analysis verify that the integration of Ru/Rh-cation doping and oxygen vacancy obviously enhances the intrinsic conductivity and lattice defects of FeOOH and expose more active sites, thereby decreasing the adsorption/desorption energy barrier and activation energy, and improving the specific activity and catalytic kinetics of electrocatalysts, whereas in situ hybridization with MXene strengthens the structural stability. This work clearly confirms that cationdoping and oxygen-vacancy engineering offers a joint strategy for the electronic structure modulation and design of highly-efficient inexpensive OER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Introducing an additional proton acceptor is essential for achieving rapid deprotonation kinetics of oxo intermediates during acidic oxygenevolution reaction (OER). In this work, the construction of a RuTiOx solid solution optimizes proton adsorption energy at Obri sites, thereby activating an Obri‐assisted deprotonation mechanism. Consequently, RuTiOx exhibits excellent electrochemical performance for OER. The development of efficient and durable electrocatalysts for the acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for advancing renewable hydrogen energy technology. However, the slow deprotonation kinetics of oxo‐intermediates, involving the four proton‐coupled electron steps, hinder the acidic OER progress. Herein, a RuTiOx solid solution electrocatalyst is investigated, which features bridged oxygen (Obri) sites that act as proton acceptors, accelerating the deprotonation of oxo‐intermediates. Electrochemical tests, infrared spectroscopy, and density functional theory results reveal that the moderate proton adsorption energy on Obri sites facilitates fast deprotonation kinetics through the adsorbate evolution mechanism. This process effectively prevents the over‐oxidation and deactivation of Ru sites caused by the lattice oxygen mechanism. Consequently, RuTiOx shows a low overpotential of 198 mV at 10 mA cm−2geo and performance exceeding 1400 h at 50 mA cm−2geo with negligible deactivation. These insights into the OER mechanism and the structure‐function relationship are crucial for the advancement of catalytic systems.

Abstract:Designing efficient and stable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst is the basis for the development of sustainable electrolytic water energy techniques. In this work, we presented a heterogeneous-structured electrocatalyst composed of bimetallic oxides-modified RuO2 nanosheets supported on nikel foam (Co2CrO4/RuO2) using a hybrid hydrothermal, ion-exchange and calcination method. The unique synergy and interfacial coupling between Co2CrO4/RuO2 heterostructures are favorable for optimizing the electronic configuration at this interface and strengthening the charge transport capacity, thus strengthening the catalytic activity of the Co2CrO4/RuO2 catalyst. The experimental data demonstrate that Cr leaching facilitates the rapid reconstruction of the catalyst into oxyhydroxides (CoOOH), which are acknowledged to be the real active species of OER. Theoretical calculations show that the Co2CrO4/RuO2 heterostructure increases the density state at the Fermi energy level and lowers the d-band center, thereby strengthening the catalytic activity. The synthesized Co2CrO4/RuO2 catalyst exhibited OER performance with an overpotential of 209 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and displayed a low Tafel slope of 78.2 mV dec-1, which outperforms most reported advanced alkaline OER catalysts. This work contributes to a new tactic for the design and development of ruthenium oxide/bimetallic oxides electrocatalysts.

Abstract:For the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media, there is an urgent need to optimize the adsorption strength of OH*. Here, a flower-like hybrid of Cr-doped FeOOH/Ni(OH)(2) was used as an OER catalyst with a low overpotential of 291 mV at 50 mA cm(-2). The results showed that faster charge transfer was achieved at the electrode/solution interface during the OER process after the FeOOH/Ni(OH)(2) was modified by Cr, which facilitates the rate-determining step of the Volmer reaction. Furthermore, the results of faradaic efficiency and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements confirmed that the synergistic effect between the ternary metal and oxygen vacancies led to excellent OER performance. This work provides a new strategy for the preparation of high-efficiency and low-cost oxygen evolution electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Green hydrogen production with water splitting devices, especially a proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE), has received extensive attention. However, the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) still hinders its large-scale commercial application. Designing high-performance and low-cost electrocatalysts to drive the OER reaction remains a tough challenge. The active nanoparticles incorporating with metal oxide support is considered a promising strategy to improve durability and activity in acidic electrolytes. However, efficient synthesis methods without support premodification are rarely investigated. Herein, a simple but effective hydrothermal method accompanying the gradient annealing temperature was used to synthesize commercial TiO2 supported RuO2. The representative RuO2/TiO2-T250 required a low overpotential of 239 mV (@10 mA cm–2) with a Tafel slope value of 41.49 mV dec–1 and stability of over 20 h, far exceeding the performance of commercial RuO2. T250 exhibited a crystalline but hydrated microstructure, and the existing support-metal oxide interaction redistributed the electrons around Ru and Ti, which both gave rise to the activity of the electrocatalyst as well as hindered the Ru dissolution, thereby enhancing the OER performance. The synthesis strategy creates an important platform for designing more robust electrocatalysts for PEMWE application.

Abstract:The present work reports a general approach to improve the electrocatalytic property of noble metal through regulating its electron status by introducing the electronic metal–support interaction (EMSI). As a case study, the catalytic activity of metallic Pd toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline solution has been significantly promoted by stabilizing Pdδ+ oxidic species at the interface of the Pd–metal oxide support with the help of EMSI effect, suggesting an intrinsic advantage of Pdδ+ in driving OER. We further demonstrate that the chemical state of Pdδ+ can be easily modulated in the range of 2+ to 3+ by changing the metal oxide support, interestingly, accompanied by a clear dependence of the OER activity on the oxidation state of Pdδ+. The high Pd3+ species-containing Fe2O3/Pd catalyst has fed an impressively enhanced OER property, showing an overpotential of 383 mV at 10 mA cm–2 compared to those of u003e600 mV on metallic Pd and 540 mV on Fe2O3/glassy carbon. Abstract:RuO2 has been recognized as a standard electrocatalyst for acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Nonetheless, its high cost and limited durability are still ongoing challenges. Herein, a RuO2/Ni-Co3O4 heterostructure confining a heterointerface (between RuO2 and Ni-doped Co3O4) is constructed to realize enhanced OER performance. Specifically, RuO2/Ni-Co3O4 containing a low Ru content (2.7 ± 0.3 wt%) achieves an overpotential of 186 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 with a long-run stability (≥1300 h). Also, it exhibits a mass activity of 1202.29 mA mgRu-1 at an overpotential of 250 mV, exceeding commercial RuO2. The results disclose an optimum electron transfer at the heterointerface, wherein Ni doping improves the adsorption energy of oxygen-containing intermediates, thereby facilitating OER. This study presents an effective approach for designing highly active and stable OER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:A highly active RuO2IrO2 electrocatalyst was developed via dip-coating/calcination method for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The catalyst on Ti substrate with a 7/3 molar ratio between Ru and Ir showed the highest electrocatalytic activity for OER among composite samples in different molar ratios. Moreover, the properties of RuO2IrO2 grown on carbon paper were evaluated by proton exchange membrane water electrolysis single cell. Compared with the micron-particle structure of RuO2IrO2 catalyst on the Ti substrate, the catalyst grown on the carbon paper showed a novel nano dendrite shape and can be used directly as the gas diffusion electrode. Owing to the large surface area of the catalyst, the nano dendrite-shaped RuO2IrO2 catalyst exhibits excellent OER performance in the single cell. Furthermore, a cell voltage of 2.50 V is achieved under 200 mA cm−2 at 30 °C by using the optimal composition RuO2IrO2 (Ru: Ir=7/3) and the commercial 20% Pt/C as anode and cathode, respectively.

Abstract:Efficient and durable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) play an important role in use of hydrogen energy. Rutile RuO2, although considered to be an advanced electrocatalyst for OER, has poor stability due to its easy oxidative dissolution at very positive (oxidizing) potentials. Herein, we report a type of Co-doped RuO2 nanoparticles for boosting OER catalytic activity and stability in alkaline solutions. The replacement of Ru by Co atoms with lower ionic valence and smaller electronegativity can promote the generation of O vacancies and increase the electron density around Ru, thus enhancing the adsorption of oxygen species and inhibiting the peroxidative dissolution of RuO2 during the OER process. It was found that Ru0.95Co0.05Oy exhibited excellent OER performance with an overpotential as low as 217 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and 290 mV at 100 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH, as well as outstanding stability in continuous testing for 50 h at a current density of 100 mA cm-2, and nearly no significant degradation after the accelerated durability test of 2000 cycles.

Abstract:Iridium free, acidic-stable, cost-effective, and efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst is considered to be the bottleneck in the quest for sustainable energy production/storage devices. RuO2 has been proved as a highly active and standard OER electrocatalyst with poor stability. Herein, we are successfully providing the facile approach to synthesize the mixed oxide composite of RuO2 tailored with MoO3. Fifty percent reduction of noble metal contents, two times enhanced activity and excellent durability as compared to pure homemade and commercial RuO2 have been confirmed by numerous characterization techniques. Enhanced electrochemical performance of best mixed oxide composite is observed due to increasing number of oxygen vacancies, electronic distortion, lower oxidation state of noble metal, and reduced value of the Tafel slope. Furthermore, the best composite shows the 7-fold increase in electrochemical surface area, 3.2 times improvement in the bulk mass activity, and less value of overpotential.
Self-supported iridium-ruthenium oxides catalysts with enriched phase interfaces for boosting oxygen evolution reaction in acid

Abstract:Developing highly efficient low-noble-metal loading electrocatalysts for acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a great challenge. Herein, we developed a novel self-supported IrmRunOx/Ti electrode exhibiting an amorphous film encapsulated with a small number of crystalline nanoparticles for efficient acidic OER. The as -synthesized Ir0.95Ru0.05Ox/Ti electrode exhibits an excellent OER performance with an overpotential of 200 mV at 10 mA cm-2, a Tafel slope of 46.8 mV dec-1, and robust stability of 192 h in 0.1 M HClO4. The enriched heterogeneous interfaces between the amorphous phase and crystalline phase enhance the stability and activity of the solid solution oxides. The high density of oxygen vacancies on the surface, together with the strong electronic interaction contribute to boosting the OER. This work provides some valuable insights into developing efficient Ir-based catalysts for acidic water splitting.
Efficient Optimization of Electron/Oxygen Pathway by Constructing Ceria/Hydroxide Interface for Highly Active Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Owing to the unique electronic properties, rare-earth modulations in noble-metal electrocatalysts emerge as a critical strategy for a broad range of renewable energy solutions such as water-splitting and metal-air batteries. Beyond the typical doping strategy that suffers from synthesis difficulties and concentration limitations, the innovative introduction of rare-earth is highly desired. Herein, a novel synthesis strategy is presented by introducing CeO2 support for the nickel-iron-chromium hydroxide (NFC) to boost the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, which achieves an ultralow overpotential at 10 mA cm(-2) of 230.8 mV, the Tafel slope of 32.7 mV dec(-1), as well as the excellent durability in alkaline solution. Density functional theory calculations prove the established d-f electronic ladders, by the interaction between NFC and CeO2, evidently boosts the high-speed electron transfer. Meanwhile, the stable valence state in CeO2 preserves the high electronic reactivity for OER. This work demonstrates a promising approach in fabricating a nonprecious OER electrocatalyst with the facilitation of rare-earth oxides to reach both excellent activity and high stability.
Redirecting Dynamic Structural Evolution of Nickel-Contained RuO2 Catalyst During Electrochemical Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a main efficiency bottleneck of water electrolysis. Commercial ruthenium oxide (RuO2) catalyst displays remarkable activities but poor stability for OER. The instability stems from lattice oxygen oxidation, resulting in the oxidation of Ru4+ to soluble Rux+ (x > 4) species. Herein, we redirect dynamic structural evolution of Ru-based catalysts through introducing oxidized nickel (Ni) components. By virtue of comprehensive structural characterizations, such as high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), operando Raman and so forth, it is demonstrated that when the atomic content of Ni exceeds that of ruthenium (Ru), the Ni components can efficiently inhibit the Ru4+ oxidation and structural collapse. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the introduction of Ni component hinders the formation of oxygen vacancies, and makes lattice oxygen mediated mechanism turn to adsorbate evolution mechanism, which eventually improves the stability. The optimized nickel-contained RuO2 catalyst delivers an effective reactivity with an overpotential of less than 215 mV to attain 10 mA cm(-2) and remarkable stability with only 5 mV increment after 5000 potential cycles. This work provides insights into the origin of dynamic structural evolution of transition-metal-modified RuO2 electrocatalysts.
