Abstract:A Li2TiO3 modified LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 cathode material is prepared by a novel coating method of Li2TiO3 nanoparticles. Compared with a coated material prepared by synchronous lithiation, this coated material shows an unchanged LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 bulk structure and a dramatically reduced lithium residue amount on the surface. As a result, the electrochemical performance of this coated material is improved markedly, especially for the cycling stability at an elevated temperature (60 degrees C), at which the capacity retention after 200 cycles at a rate of 1 C is 91.32%. The performance enhancement for this coated material can be mainly contributed to the less formation of a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer and a lower degree of structural changes during cycling. Abstract:Although the LiNi0.88Co0.09Al0.03O2 with high Ni content has received intensive attention as an inexpensive cathode material possessing high energy density, it also encounters a poor cycling issue because of the micro-cracks caused by phase transition and serious side reactions between electrodes with electrolyte. In this study, dual-modification of the material is achieved by LiBO2-coating and Mg-doping, aiming to stabilize its crystal structure and reduce its surface activity. Furthermore, a systematic exploration was made into the influence of Mg-doping and LiBO2-coating layers on the particle morphology, crystal structure and electrochemical traits. According to the XRD (X-ray diffraction) outcomes, the Mg-doping and LiBO2-coating both expand the interplanar space and lower the Ni2+/ Li+ cation mixing. According to the TEM (transmission electron microscopy) and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) findings, the LiBO2-coating layer is within 25 nm and the Mg-doping heightens the Ni2+ content. In the meanwhile, the electrochemical measurement indicates that dual-modification with LiBO2-coating and Mg-doping was effective in strengthening the discharge ability, rate capability and cycling behavior of LiNi0.88Co0.09Al0.03O2 due to the elevated rate of Li+ diffusion, the constrained electrode side reaction with electrolyte, as well as the improved reversibility of H2 to H3 phase. Besides, the cylindrical 18650 battery with co-modification cathode show excellent prolonged cycling stability both at room and high temperature.

Abstract:To develop Co-free LiNiO2-based layered cathode materials is crucial for meeting the demands of the lithium-ion batteries with high energy density, long cycling life, and low cost. Herein, the LiNi1-x-yAlxMgyO2 materials are synthesized by the solid-solid interface elemental interdiffusion strategy. It is elucidated that the Mg2+ and Al3+ ions are mainly doped in the Li slabs and transition metal slabs, respectively, leading to the alteration of the crystal lattice. Furthermore, the incorporation of the Mg2+ ions may induce more Ni2+ ions formed in the transition metal slabs, which would have great impact on the electrochemical performance of the materials. The LiNi1-x-yAlxMgyO2 materials with optimized Mg/Al co-doping exhibit much better electrochemical performance than the pristine LiNiO2 and Al-doped LiNiO2 materials, including cycling stability and rate capability. The in-situ XRD characterization and structural analysis show that stabilization of the crystal structure, preservation of the integrity of the secondary particles, and enlargement of the interlayer spacing by the Mg/Al co-doping are the main factors responsible for the superior performance of the materials. The Mg/Al co-doping strategy might be the promising approach for the design of the cobalt-free nickel-rich materials.
Synthesis and electrochemical properties of LiNi0.8-xCo0.2MgxO2

Abstract:Doping-modified LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 is a new promising candidate cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. A series of Mg-doped LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 materials were synthesized via a coprecipitation method. The effects of Mg content on the electrochemical properties of the materials were investigated. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), cycling voltammetry and galvanostatic cycle (30 mA·cm-2, 3.0-4.2 V). As the results, the cycling property of the materials was improved by Mg-doped. The first charge-discharge specific capacities of LiNi0.78Mn0.02Co0.2O2was up to 230.1 mAh·g-1 and 193. 3 mAh·g-1 respectively, the first cycling effect is 84%. The discharge specific capacities could still retain about 188.0 mAh·g-1 after 100 cycles, and the specific capacity retention was up to 97%, this shows good Lithium intercalation performance of the material.
LiNbO3 Coating and F- Doping Stabilize the Crystal Structure and Ameliorate the Interface of LiNi0.88Co0.06Mn0.03Al0.03O2 to Improve the Electrochemical Properties and Safety Capability

Abstract:Ni-rich layered materials Li[NixCoyMnzAl1-x-y-z]O2 (x > 0.8) are regarded as the competitive cathode for practical applications in lithium-ion batteries owing to the large discharging capacity. Nevertheless, the strong oxidation activity, the poor structure, and the thermal stability at the electrode-electrolyte interface would lead to much trouble, for example, inferior electrochemical properties and acute safety issues. To ameliorate the above problems, this work reports a strategy for the double modification of F- doping and LiNbO3 covering in LiNi0.88Co0.06Mn0.03Al0.03O2 cathode via using high-temperature calcining and ball-milling technology. As a result, the cathodes after F- doping and LiNbO3 covering not only demonstrate a more stabilized crystal structure and particle interface but also reduce the release of high-activity oxygen species to ameliorate the thermal runaway. The electrochemical tests show that the LiNbO3-F--modified cathode displays a superior rate capability of 159.3 mAh g-1 at 10.0 C and has the predominant capability retention of 92.1% in the 200th cycle at 25 °C, much superior than those (125.4 mAh g-1 and 84.0%) of bare cathode. Thus, the F- doped and LiNbO3-coated Ni-rich oxides could be a promising cathode to realize the high capacity and a stabilized interface.

Abstract:LiNi0.8Co0.2−xAlxO2 (0⩽x⩽0.2) were prepared from LiOH·H2O and Me(OH)x (Me=Ni, Co, Al) by co-precipitation and heating at 750°C for 8–24h in oxygen flow. The optimum heating time is 16h. XRD, SEM and various electrochemical methods were used to examine the structural and electrochemical characteristics. It is found that the doping of Al into LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 stabilizes its layered structure and greatly improves the electrochemical cycling ability. The open-circuit voltage and the discharge voltage increase slightly after minor doping, which is in agreement well with published ab initio calculations of lithium metal oxides.
Enhanced electrochemical performance of Ni-rich cathode material by N-doped LiAlO2 surface modification for lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 (NCM) cathodes are regarded as prospective cathodes for high-performance Lithium ion batteries due to its low costs and high energy density. Nevertheless, poor electrochemical performance severely hinders its further commercial applications. In this study, an effective surface modification strategy to fabricate N-doped LiAlO2 was coated on the surface of LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2, and electrochemical performance are greatly enhanced. The nitrogen (N)-doped LiAlO2 (LAO) coated LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 not only exhibit best cycling performance with capacity retention of 87 % after 450 cycles at 1 C (210 mA g−1) under voltage range of 2.7-4.5 V, but also approaches 167 and 154 mAh g−1 at 5 C and 10 C, respectively. The N-doped LiAlO2 surface modified LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 not only suppresses the occurrence of surface side reaction, structural degradation and intergranular cracks, but also remove residual lithium from the LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 surface. Most importantly, in constructed this N-doped LiAlO2 layer, the LiAlO2 with the similar layered structure as LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 can tightly immobilize on the LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 surface, and the N-doping could induce the formation of oxygen vacancies and Al-N bond on surface of the LiAlO2 as well as enlarge interslab distance for the migrating Li+ in the LiAlO2 lattices. These finding not only promoted the commercial application of Ni-rich material, but also provided a new idea for other layered structure cathode.

Abstract:A Co–Mg co-substituted LiNi0.87Co0.10Mg0.03O2 cathode material was prepared by a co-precipitation method. The prepared LiNi0.87Co0.10Mg0.03O2 exhibits excellent electrochemical properties, such as initial discharge capacities of 202.6 mA·h/g and 190.5 mA·h/g at 0.2C and 1C rate, respectively, in operating voltage range of 3.0–4.3 V (versus Li+/Li). The capacity retentions are 96.1% and 93.4% at 0.2C and 1C, respectively, after 50 cycles. Moreover, the cycle performance of the sample was investigated in a 053048-type square Li ion battery. This type of battery can keep 81.7% of initial capacity after 500 charge–discharge cycles at 1C rate, which is close to that of commercial LiCoO2 battery. Therefore, the as-prepared material is capable of such high energy applications as portable product power.

Abstract:Ni-rich cathode materials have attracted much attention due to the high energy density and low cost. However, the poor cycling performance and low rate capacity have produced a serious impact on the practical commercial application. In this work, the B 3+ incorporation and polypyrrole coating were both applied to enhance the electrochemical properties of LiNi 0.85 Co 0.05 Mn 0.10 O 2 by using the co-precipitation process followed by a chemical vapor phase polymerization way. Herein, the B 3+ incorporation into crystal structure could enlarge the lattice spacing, contributing to accelerating the Li + insertion/extraction speed and enhancing the structural stability during cycling. The polypyrrole surface coating played a great effect on preventing cathode surface from the electrolyte erosion owing to a shield of polypyrrole. As a result, a maximum discharge capacity of 129.8 mAh g −1 at 5 C high rate and prominently enhanced cycling performance with capacity retention of 90.1% after 300 cycles were acquired for the Polypyrrole coated LiNi 0.835 Co 0.05 Mn 0.10 B 0.015 O 2 . By comparison, the pristine LNCMO cathode demonstrated a fast decaying capacity and delivered a capacity retention of only 81.9%.

Abstract:The high nickel and low cobalt cathode material, LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2 (x>80%, y<10%), has become one of the preferred materials in next-generation new energy vehicles due to its high energy density, but its wide use in the market is limited because of poor structural stability triggered by the high nickel content. In this work, the 0.002 mol of Al3+ and 0.001 mol of B3+ co-doping LiNi0.9Co0.05Mn0.05O2 cathode materials (0.2Al-0.1B-LNCM90) were successfully synthesized by simple solid-phase sintering, which were confirmed by ICP, EDS and XPS. The results showed that the modified samples integrate the effect of Al-doping and B-doping. On the one hand, B occupied the tetrahedral gap of the oxygen array in the transition metals (TM) and lithium layers, which increases the lattice parameter c. On the other hand, the strong Al–O bond reduced the evolution of lattice O. The cell assembled with the 0.2Al-0.1B-LNCM90 transferred an initial discharge capacity of 227 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C between 2.75 and 4.3 V, with a discharge capacity of 176 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles, which is higher than that of 101 mAh g−1 for the pristine material. Moreover, it also delivered a superior discharge specific capacity of 169 mAh g−1 at 5 C, compared to 128 mAh g−1 for the pristine material.

Abstract:Ni-rich layered metal oxide of LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 (NCM) is a promising cathode material for the next-generation lithium-ion batteries. The fast capacity fading caused by interfacial instability, bulk structural degradation and side reactions on electrode/electrolyte interface during cycling hampers its larger scale commercial applications. In this work, a combined modification strategy was implemented by coating with Li2TiO3 on particle surface and doping with PO4 3− polyanion in bulk of the NCM cathode material. The large tetrahedral PO4 3− polyanions doped into lattice structure suppresses cationic mixing and structure degradation, while the Li2TiO3 coating layer protects the particle surface and restrains side reactions. The co-modification strengthens overall structure stability for an excellent cycling performance. Moreover, the thin layered Li2TiO3 coating material with three-dimensional channels for ion transport and the enlarged interlayer spacing by PO4 3−-doping enhance capacity and facilitate Li+ ions diffusing. These factors result in a superior rate capability. With the collaborative cooperation of Li2TiO3 coating and PO4 3− doping, the sample with 1 mol% coating and 0.03 mol% doping content delivers a reversible specific capacity of 167.2 mAh g−1 at 5C and 157.8 mAh g−1 at 10C, remains a capacity of 147.7 mAh g−1 at 1C after a long term 800 cycles with a retention of 77.4% at a high cut-off voltage of 4.5 V.

Abstract:Layered Co-free Ni-rich materials are considered as promising cathode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their high energy density and low cost advantages. However, the serious chemical-mechanical instability and poor cycle life of Co-free Ni-rich cathode materials could hinder their commercialization. Herein, we successfully prepared Mg/Ti/Sb co-doped and CeO2-coated LiNi0.9Al0.1O2 cathode material (M-LNA90) using a composite modification strategy with four inexpensive metal elements. Compared with the unmodified pristine LiNi0.9Al0.1O2 cathode material (P-LNA90), the cycling stability, rate performance, and discharge capacity of the M-LNA90 cathode were significantly improved, and the high-voltage performance was also excellent. At a high voltage of 2.8–4.5 V and 1 C, the capacity retention of M-LNA90 after 100 cycles reached 90.2% (from 200 mAh g–1 to 181 mAh g–1), which was much higher than that the 60.1% of P-LNA90 (from 192 mAh g–1 to 115 mAh g–1). Meanwhile, the structure and surface stability of M-LNA90 cathode showed excellent, which effectively suppressed particle cracking and interfacial side reactions. This work provides a new insight for the composition optimization and future design of layered Ni-rich cathode materials.
Improving the Cycle Stability of LiNiO2 through Al3+ Doping and LiAlO2 Coating

Abstract:In this study, we addressed the poor cycling and rate performance of LiNiO2, a material with ultrahigh nickel content considered a strong contender for high-energy-density lithium-ion battery cathodes. We introduced nano-Al2O3 during the lithiation process to achieve dual modified material through bulk phase element doping and in situ LiAlO2 coating. Comparison revealed notable improvements in the modified materials. In particular, LiNi0.99Al0.01O2 maintained a capacity retention rate of 73.1% after 300 cycles in a long-cycle test at 0.5C current density, outperforming the undoped material. In rate performance tests, the doped samples consistently exhibited higher discharge-specific capacities than that of the undoped counterpart. Notably, at a high current density of 5C, LiNi0.99Al0.01O2 exhibited a discharge-specific capacity of 101.75 mAh g-1. The results indicate that an appropriate amount of Al doping can effectively stabilize the layered structure of the cathode material and delay the irreversible phase transition from H2 to H3. Further, Al doping facilitates the formation of a LiAlO2 coating on the surface of the particles. This coating acts as a fast-ion conductor, enhancing the transport of lithium ions and reducing the erosion of the active material by the electrolyte.
A Nickel-Rich Oxide, Li(Ni0.90Co0.06Mn0.04)0.995Al0.005 O2, with a Dual Conductive Coating

Abstract:Nickel (Ni)-rich layered oxides have high specific capacities and are inexpensive, but their synthesis and electrochemical performance continue to present difficulties. In this study, we investigated the effect of a dual conductive compound of dot-like Nb12WO33 and film-like lithium boron oxide (Li-B-O; applied using a simple dry-coating method) on the Ni-rich oxide layer in Li batteries. The film-like Li-B-O homogeneous coating segregated the cathode from the electrolyte, which improved the initial efficiency and cycle stability, and the dot-like Nb12WO33 provided a fast Li-ion transition channel, which improved the rate performance of the Ni-rich oxide layer. The modified cathode with dual conductive coating exhibited significantly improved electrochemical performance. Its discharge capacity was 225.6 mAh g−1, with high initial efficiency of 92.73% in the voltage range of 3.0–4.3 V at 0.1 C, whereas that of the uncoated sample was 219.4 mAh g−1, with an initial efficiency of 90.4%. The modified cathode had a discharge capacity of 179.1 mAh g−1 at 5 C, compared with that of 161.1 mAh g−1 for the uncoated sample; the capacity retention of the coated sample was 92.84% at 0.5 C after 50 cycles at 25 ℃, whereas that of the uncoated sample was only 81.41%. A similar strategy could be utilized to enhance the performance of other cathode materials.
Modification research of LiAlO2-coated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 as a cathode material for lithium-ion battery

Abstract:The LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 with LiAlO2 coating was obtained by hydrolysis–hydrothermal method. The morphology of the composite was characterized by SEM, TEM, and EDS. The results showed that the LiAlO2 layer was almost completely covered on the surface of particle, and the thickness of coating was about 8–12 nm. The LiAlO2 coating suppressed side reaction between composite and electrolyte; thus, the electrochemical performance of the LiAlO2-coated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 was improved at 40 °C. The LiAlO2-coated sample delivered a high discharge capacity of 181.2 mAh g−1 (1 C) with 93.5% capacity retention after 100 cycles at room temperature and 87.4% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 40 °C. LiAlO2-coated material exhibited an excellent cycling stability and thermal stability compared with the pristine material. These works will contribute to the battery structure optimization and design.

Abstract:AbstractLiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 has been regarded as a promising cathode material due to its high discharge capacity, but it suffers from structural instability during the cycling process. Here, Mg2+ and Al3+ are co-doped in LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 to ameliorate the problem. The analysis results reveal that the dual doping can enlarge the Li+ diffusion channel, lower Li+/Ni2+ disorder, and depress the structural degradation during cycling. Therefore, the electrochemical performance of cathode material with Mg2+ and Al3+ dual doping has been effectively enhanced. In the voltage range of 2.8–4.3 V, the discharge capacity of NCM-MA is 138.8 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles at 1 C, which is 31 mAh g−1 higher than the pristine NCM. Prolonging the cycles to 450 times, the capacity retention is 12.5% higher than the pristine material. Besides, the NCM-MA delivers a high discharge capacity of 150.33 mAh g−1 at 5 C, due to the improvement of Li+ diffusion kinetics.

Abstract:Ni-rich LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM) as a high capacity cathode material is the most promising candidate for lithium-ion batteries. However, NCM still suffers from poor rate capability and insufficient cycle stability owing to the poor conductivity as well as side reactions. Here, a dual-conductive coating strategy is employed to address these issues. The PPy-LiAlO2 coated NCM composites (PPy-LA) are synthesized by hydrolysis–hydrothermal approach and in-situ chemical polymerization method. The LiAlO2 coating can suppress side reactions and enhance ionic conductivity, and the PPy coating can increase electronic conductivity. As a result, the PPy-LA sample delivers superior cycling stability and rate capability compared to NCM sample. The capacity retention of PPy-LA is 92.8% after 100 loops and a high capacity of 128 mAh/g is obtained at 2 A/g. This effective surface modification method could shed light on other cathode materials.
Enhancing cycle life of LiNi0.95Co0.04Mn0.01O2 cathode by bulk W-doping and surface Co-doping

Abstract:LiNi0.95Co0.04Mn0.01O2 cathode material is modified by bulk W-doping and surface Co-doping through a scalable co-precipitation-calcination process. A small amount of the dopants has no negative impact on specific capacity of the ultrahigh-Ni cathode, but significantly improves the structural stability and electrochemical performance. The modified sample delivers an initial discharge capacity of 228.3 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C (1 C = 220 mA g−1) and exhibits a capacity retention of 84.7 % after 300 cycles at a current density of 2 C and excellent rate capability (188.6 mAh g−1 at 5 C), demonstrating its practicability in high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy result shows that the collaborative modification can maintain a high Ni3+ content on the surface of the material. Furthermore, differential capacity analysis and electrode kinetic study suggest that the increase of polarization during cycling is suppressed and the structural stability is improved.

Abstract:High-nickel ternary material LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2 (NCM) as a cathode material of Li-ion batteries has already been applied in many fields, like electric vehicles and 3C, due to its low cost and outstanding energy storage performance. but fast capacity decays result from interfacial degradation and internal destruction of the NCM structure leading to poor cycle life during charge–discharge processes, hindering widespread application. To solve these problems, this work develops a modification scheme to achieve the one-step generation of a Li2MoO4 coating on the outside of LiNi0.83Co0.11Mn0.06O2 particles and dope high-valence cations (Mo6+) inside LiNi0.83Co0.11Mn0.06O2 while reducing the residual Li content on the outside of materials. At 1C(1C = 200mAhg−1), the modified sample, Mo + NCM-1.0 (1.0 mol% doped LiNi0.83Co0.11Mn0.06O2), exhibits an excellent discharge capacity of 202mAhg−1 and cycling stability with a capacity retention of 90.22%. By contrast, pristine LiNi0.83Co0.11Mn0.06O2 shows the discharge capacity is 189.27mAhg−1 with a capacity retention of 87.93%. Further research shows that the modification scheme can alleviate the electrode loss during cycling, stabilize the internal structure of the NCM, enhance the Li+ diffusion rate, and improve the electrochemical properties. This modification strategy can be applied to other cathode materials.

Abstract:The high nickel cathode LiNi0.83Co0.06Mn0.06Al0.05O2 (combination of NCM and NCA) coated with the Li+ conductor Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 in various mass fractions was prepared via using the typical sol-gel process. The LiNi0.83Co0.06Mn0.06Al0.05O2 after the Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 covering demonstrated the similar crystal structure and particle morphology in comparison with the bare cathode. The electrochemical test results indicated the superior rate capabilities and cycling performances were acquired for the coated cathodes due to the presence of the Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 film on the surface of LiNi0.83Co0.06Mn0.06Al0.05O2. The 2 wt% Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 covered LiNi0.83Co0.06Mn0.06Al0.05O2 exhibited the greatest electrochemical performance with a large cycle retention rate of 90.9% over 300 cycles at 45 °C, rate capacity of 139.8 mAh g−1 at 5 C current density, and a high capability of 126.5 mAh g−1 at − 30 °C, superior than those (80.9%, 99.8 mAh g−1, 71.3mAh g−1 accordingly) of the bare cathode. In addition, the safety and environmental reliability tests of pouch batteries suggested the Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 film on the surface of cathode acted as a protective layer to promote the stability for application.
