Abstract:Amorphous porous carbon with a network structure composed of nanosheets was prepared from semi-coke by a facile molten salt method. The low-melting eutectic salts act as solvents at 600oC, and the porous carbon was obtained in a liquid reaction environment. Meanwhile, the effects of temperature on morphology and electrochemical performance of the carbon materials were studied. As a result, the electrodes exhibit extraordinary electrochemical performance as anodes for lithium-ion batteries, which show a high capacity of 539.9 mA h g-1 at 0.2 A g-1 after 150 cycles. Moreover, the medium surface area of carbon nanosheets contributes to the high initial Coulomb efficiency of 72.9%. More importantly, the sample shows excellent cyclability of 231.1 mA h g-1 at 2 A g-1 after 500 cycles. The superior electrochemical performance can be attributed to the unique structure accelerating the movement of electron/ion, and the permeation of the electrolyte, and the cross-linked network structure shorting the Li+ migration path. The method is simple, environmentally friendly, and has broad application prospect in the preparation of carbon-based anode materials.

Abstract:Amorphous carbon is regarded as a promising alternative to commercial graphite as the lithium-ion battery anode due to its capability to reversibly store more lithium ions. However, the structural disorder with a large number of defects can lead to low electrical conductivity of the amorphous carbon, thus limiting its application for high power output. Herein, ultrathin amorphous carbon nanosheets were prepared from petroleum asphalt through tuning the carbonization temperature in a molten-salt medium. The amorphous nanostructure with expanded carbon interlayer spacing can provide substantial active sites for lithium storage, while the two-dimensional (2D) morphology can facilitate fast electrical conductivity. As a result, the electrodes deliver a high reversible capacity, outstanding rate capability, and superior cycling performance (579 and 396 mAh g-1 at 2 and 5 A g-1 after 900 cycles). Furthermore, full cells consisting of the carbon anodes coupled with LiMn2O4 cathodes exhibit high specific capacity (608 mAh g-1 at 50 mA g-1) and impressive cycling stability with slow capacity loss (0.16% per cycle at 200 mA g-1). The present study not only paves the way for industrial-scale synthesis of advanced carbon materials for lithium-ion batteries but also deepens the fundamental understanding of the intrinsic mechanism of the molten-salt method.

Abstract:Carbon materials have attracted considerable attention as anodes for lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries due to their low cost and environmental friendliness. This work reports an advanced carbon nanostructure that takes advantage of the chelation effect of glucose and metal ions, which ensures the uniform dispersion of metal in the precursor. Thus, an effective catalytic conversion from sp(3) to sp(2) carbon occurs, enabling simultaneously formation of pores with catalyzed graphitic structures. Due to the low carbonization temperature and short carbonization time as well as the different catalytic degree of various metals, a series of expanded graphitic layers from 0.34 to 0.44 nm with defects and amorphous carbon structure are obtained. The structure not only offers accessible graphitic spacings for reversible lithium/sodium ion insertion, but also provides abundant active sites for lithium/sodium ion adsorption in the defects and amorphous structure. Moreover, the hierarchical interconnected porous structure combining graphitic ribbons is beneficial for fast electronic/ionic transport and favorable electrolyte permeation. More importantly, such advanced carbon materials prove their feasibility for balancing the pore structure and degree of graphitization. When serving as the electrode material for lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries, excellent electrochemical performance along with fast kinetics and long cycle life is achieved.

Abstract:Hard carbons attract myriad interest as anode materials for high-energy rechargeable batteries due to their low costs and high theoretical capacities; practically, they deliver unsatisfactory performance due to their intrinsically disordered microarchitecture. Here we report a facile ion catalyzed synthesis of a phenol formaldehyde resin-based hard-carbon aerogel that takes advantage of the chelation effect of phenol and Fe3+, which consists of a three-dimensionally interconnected carbon network embedded with hydrogen-rich, ordered microstructures of expanded nanographites and carbon micropores. The chelation effect ensures the homodispersion of Fe in the polymer segments of the precursor, so that an effective catalytic conversion from sp(3) to sp(2) carbon occurs, enabling free rearrangement of graphene sheets into expanded nanographite and carbon micropores. The structural merits of the carbon offer chances to achieve lithium/sodium storage performance far beyond that possible with the conventional carbon anode materials, including graphite and mesocarbon microbeads, along with fast kinetics and long cycle life. In this way, our hard carbon proves its feasibility to serve as an advanced anode material for high-energy rechargeable Li/Na batteries.
Molten salt assisted synthesis of Si/C nanocomposite derived from palygorskite and sodium alginate for electrochemical lithium storage

Abstract:Silicon/carbon (Si/C) nanocomposites are considered as one of the most promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to their high capacity and suitable lithiation potential. However, the complex and time-consuming preparation processes of silicon-based nanocomposites and the unexpected silicon carbide generated during high treatment make it difficult to achieve high-performance Si/C nanocomposites for practical applications. Herein, a silicon/carbon nanocomposite is successfully prepared through a facile and eco-friendly molten salt assisted precarbonization-reduction method using palygorskite (PAL) and sodium alginate as raw materials. Based on physical characterizations, it is demonstrated that the sodium alginate plays a key role in the successful preparation of Si/C nanocomposite, which not only boosts uniform embedding of PAL nanoparticles in the carbon matrix but also releases molten sodium salt to suppress the formation of unexpected SiC. When used as an alternative anode material for lithium-ion battery applications, the as-obtained Si/C composite delivers a high reversible specific capacity of 1362.7 mA h g-1 with an initial Coulombic efficiency of 70.3% at a current density of 200 mA g-1 and excellent long-term cycling stability. The findings here provide a facile and eco-friendly molten salt assisted precarbonization-reduction method for high-performance silicon/carbon anode materials.

Abstract:Currently, common two-dimensional (2D) carbon materials composited with Si-based materials as anode for lithium-ion batteries exhibit excellent electrochemical properties. In this study, we presented a one-step synthesis of amino-functionalized mesoporous silica (SiO2) nanospheres through self-assembly. Morphology modulation and amino group grafting were performed simultaneously without secondary modification. Using tartaric acid and melamine as dual carbon sources, the 2D lamellar structure was constructed using the dehydration condensation reaction, with the mesoporous SiO2 nanospheres uniformly intercalated within the carbon sheets. The composites were securely bonded by chemical attraction, effectively addressing the issue of structural collapse often encountered in silica-carbon composites. Ultimately, the lamellar SiO2@NC composite exhibited stable capacity of 539.5 mAh g(-1) after 500 cycles at 1 A g(-1). This strategy is simple and effective, compared to the complex processes typically associated with 2D carbon materials synthesis, and can be potentially extended to applications in catalysis, adsorption, and separation within diverse fields.

Abstract:We report an amorphorization-hybridization strategy to enhance lithium storage by casting atomically mixed amorphorized SnO2/MoO3 into porous foam-like carbon nanoflakes (denote as SnO2/MoO3@CNFs, or SMC in short), which are simply prepared by annealing tin(II)/molybdenum(IV) 2-ethylhexanoate within CNFs under ambient atmosphere at a low temperature (300 °C). The SnO2/MoO3 loading amount within CNFs can be easily adjusted by controlling the Sn/Mo/C precursors. When examined as lithium ion battery (LIB) anode materials, the amorphorized SnO2/MoO3@CNFs with carbon content of 32 wt% (also denote as SMC-32, in which the number represents the carbon content) deliver a high reversible capacity of 1120.5 mA h/g after 200 cycles at 200 mA/g and then 651.5 mA h/g after another 300 cycles at 2000 mA/g, which is much better than that of the crystalline SnO2/CNFs (carbon content of 34 wt%), MoO3/CNFs (carbon content of 22.7 wt%), or SnO2/MoO3@CNFs (with lower carbon contents of 11 and 25 wt%). The electrochemical measurements as well as the ex situ structure characterization clearly suggest that combination of amorphorization and hybridization of SnO2/MoO3 with CNFs synergistically contributes to the superior lithium storage performance with high pseudocapacitive contribution.

Abstract:We report a facile molten salt approach for the fabrication of CoO and Co nanoparticles, which homogeneously embedded in two-dimensional (2D) amorphous carbon nanosheets as an advanced anode materials for high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). With the aid of Na2SO4 particles, the ultra-small CoO/C or Co/C hybrid nanocomposites were synthesized simultaneously through a single heating procedure using the Co(OH)(2)@OA complex as the precursors for both CoO(Co) and thin carbon layers. The hybrid nanocomposites (C500, C600) exhibited an unexpected initial discharge capacity of 1618.2 and 873 mA h g(-1) and high reversible specific capacity (642.1 and 500 mA h g(-1) over 50 cycles at 70 mA g(-1)). The design of ultrafine CoO (Co) nanoparticles encapsulated with thin carbon layers can not only achieve long cycle life, but also effectively avoid the particle cracking, pulverization and aggregation upon cycling. Moreover, the findings open new paths for the exploiting of advanced active materials and electrolytes for Li ion batteries and other energy storage devices.

Abstract:Silicon-based materials has attracted attention as a promising candidate for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high energy density. However, severe volume variation, pulverization, and poor conductivity hindered the development of Si based materials. In this study, porous Si microparticles supported by carbon nanotubes (p-Si/CNT) are fabricated through simple molten salt assisted dealloying process at low temperature followed by acid treatment. The ZnCl2 molten salt not only provides the liquid environment to enhance the reaction, but also participates the dealloying process and works as template for porous structure when removes by acid treatment. Additionally, distribution of defect sites in CNTs also increases after molten salt process. Density function theory (DFT) calculations further prove the defects could improve the adsorption of Li+. The participation of CNTs can also contribute to the reaction kinetics and retain the integrity of the electrode. As expected, the p-Si/CNT anode manifests enhanced lithium-storage performance in terms of superior cycling stability and good rate capability. The p-Si/CNT//LiCoO2 full cell assembly further demonstrates its potential as a prospective anode for high-performance LIBs.

Abstract:Porous carbon produced by reduction of supercritical carbon dioxide with alkali metals was used as anode material of lithium (Li) ion batteries. X‐ray diffraction, field‐emission scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, and electron diffraction were used to characterize the structure of the products. It is shown that the products are consisted of graphite particles with relatively low graphitization and hold regular porous morphology. The porous carbon materials were evaluated as Li ion battery anodes. It exhibits a giant first discharge capacity of 1704 mAh/g at a constant current density of 0.20 mA/cm2, while the reversible capacity decreased to 200 mAh/g. The possible origins of the irreversible capacity of porous carbons and improvement method were discussed.
Coal-based ultrathin N-doped carbon nanosheets synthesized by molten-salt method for high-performance lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:Coal is a typical fossil fuel and it is also a natural carbon material, therefore, converting it to functional carbon materials is an effective way to enhance the economic advantages of coal. Here, ultrathin N-doped carbon nanosheets were prepared from low-cost coal via a handy and green molten-salt method, which shown excellent performance for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The formation mechanism of ultrathin nanosheets was studied in detail. The eutectic molten salts possess low melting points and become a strong polar solvent at the calcined temperature, making the acidified-coal miscible with them in very homogeneously state. Therefore, they can play a gigantic role in in-situ pore-forming during the carbonization and induce the formation of ultrathin nanosheets due to the salt ions. Simultaneously, the ultrathin N-doped carbon nanosheets with rich defects and controllable surface area was smoothly prepared without any more complex process while revealing brilliant electrochemical performance due to rich ion diffusion pathways. It delivers reversible capacity of 727 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1 after 150 cycles. Thus, the molten-salt method broadens the avenue to construct porous carbon materials with tailor-made morphologies. Equally important, this approach provides a step toward the sustainable materials design and chemical science in the future.

Abstract:Amorphous materials have many advantages over their crystalline states in transfering Li+ without restriction of defects, tolerating large volume change during the charging/discharging process and achieving a higher potential in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Crystalline LiTi2(PO4)(3)/TiP2O7 nanoparticles embedded in porous CNTs were constructed firstly by sol-gel and calcination, in which sulfonated polymer nanotubes as both carbon source and template. Afterwards, amorphous (Li-)Ti-P-O nanoparticles embedded in porous CNTs were formed by electrochemical activation. Due to amorphous (Li-)Ti-P-O nanoparticles providing the multi-channel transport of Li + and the porous carbon matrix preventing the gathering and pulverization of (Li-)Ti-P-O nanoparticles during the electrochemical process, (Li-)Ti-P-O/C hybrid nanotubes exhibit stable cyclic performances and good rate capacities (the capacities of Li-Ti-P-O/C and Ti-P-O/C hybrid nanotubes possess 388.9 and 457.2 mAh g(-1) at 0.2 A g(-1) after 500 cycles, and maintain 155.0 mAh g(-1) at 5 A g(-1) after 500 cycles and 123.3 mAh g(-1) at 5 A g(-1) after 3000 cycles, respectively). This paper provides a feasible method for the preparation of other anode materials with superior lithium storage performance.
In Situ Embedment of ZnS Nanocrystals in High Porosity Carbon Fibers as an Advanced Anode Material for Efficient Lithium Storage

Abstract:ZnS is a promising material for lithium-ion battery anodes due to its abundant natural resources, simplicity of synthesis, and high theoretical lithium storage capacity. However, it needs to be optimized for its low conductivity and volume effect during the charge–discharge process. The traditional method of combining with carbonaceous materials is usually laborious, and the required sulfuration process may possibly result in the destruction of materials morphology. In this study, hybrid materials formed by the combination of ZnS nanocrystals and high porosity carbon fibers were synthesized by one-step electrospinning using zinc diethyldithiocarbamate and polyacrylonitrile as raw materials and poly (ethylene glycol)—block-poly (propylene glycol)—block-poly (ethylene glycol) as template. The method is simple and avoids the influence of sulfuration process on the morphology of materials. The composite presents a specific capacity of 592.2 mAh g −1 under a current density of 1 A g −1 after 1000 cycles. The porous structure significantly decreases the diffusion mean-free path of Li + and inhibits the volume effect associated with the lithium storage process of ZnS. In addition, the 3D cross-linked carbon fibers improve the conductivity of materials. This study can serve as an inspiration for the development of other lithium storage composites.

Abstract:Porous carbons with large specific surface area and high structural stability are conducive to Li+ diffusion and cycling performance of lithium ion batteries. In this paper, porous carbon/alpha-Fe2O3 composites were in situ synthesized using water soluble phenolic resin as carbon precursor and environmentally benign NaCl as porogen. The interaction between the metal ions and hydroxyl groups in the resin facilitates the self-assembly of the precursors. The presence of NaCl enables the uniform dispersion of ferrous gluconate in the phenolic resin and prevents the aggregation of alpha-Fe2O3 during the later thermal treatment. When applied as anode materials for lithium ion batteries, the porous carbon provides short diffusion pathways for Li+ ions and adequate buffer space to accommodate the volume change of alpha-Fe2O3 during the discharge/charge process, leading to a high reversible capacity of 1272 mAh g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1) after 200 cycles, which is much higher than that of carbon/alpha-Fe2O3 without addition of NaCl. This strategy provides a simple and low-cost way for the mass production of novel anode materials of lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:Ultra-fine, porous, tin oxide–carbon (SnO2/C) nanocomposites are fabricated by a molten salt method at 300°C, and malic acid is decomposed as the carbon source. In situ synthesis is favourable for the combination of carbon and SnO2. The structure and morphology are confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis, specific surface-area measurements, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Examination of TEM images reveals that the SnO2 nanoparticles are embedded in the carbon matrix, with sizes between 2 and 5nm. The electrochemical measurements show that the nanocomposite delivers a high capacity with good capacity retention as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, due to the combination of the ultra-fine porous structure and the carbon component.
3D Graphene Nanosheets Crosslinked Core–Shell FeS2@N, S Co-Doped Porous Carbon for Improved Lithium/Sodium Storage Performance

Abstract:Transition metal sulfides (TMS) hold great promise as anode materials for Li + /Na + storage. However, their practical application still faces several challenges, such as inadequate electrical conductivity, substantial volume changes and a propensity for agglomeration. To tackle these challenges, a 3D composite structure composed of graphene nanosheets crosslinked core−shell FeS 2 @N, S co−doped porous carbon (FeS 2 @NSC/GNs) is created by combining self−template polymerization with the graphene encapsulation technique. Systematic characterization and analysis demonstrate the effectiveness of the self−template polymerization strategy in generating a porous core−shell structure, which facilitates the uniform dispersion and optimal contact of the FeS 2 core within the carbon shell. Concurrently, the integration of graphene, alongside the porous carbon shell, introduces a sophisticated dual−protection mechanism against volume expansion and undesirable FeS 2 aggregation. Furthermore, the resulting 3D architecture enables efficient electron/ion transport and provides abundant sites for Li + /Na + storage. Leveraging these inherent benefits, the FeS 2 @NSC/GNs composite exhibits significantly improved lithium/sodium storage performance in comparison to the counterparts. Evidently, our proposed approach offers valuable guidance for the construction of advanced anodes for lithium/sodium−ion batteries.
